The role of the Doctor and Notary professions in the last Sacksmas got me thinking - just how far could one progress with a character who never got involved in the schemes of the Bazaar, or, indeed, did anything adventurous or noteworthy at all? Who never fought spider-councils, or uncovered the secrets of the Correspondence, or did anything more exciting than carrying out their mundane professional duties, and exchanging a few words with the gossipy urchin on the corner? What storylines could they actually follow - and just how much Fate would they have to spend to become a Person of Some Importance? Handily, there's plenty of equipment that suits civilian purposes - suits and hats, canes and watches and glasses, landaus and city clubs.

For instance, I'm imagining someone like... say... the Pabulous Physician. He came to Fallen London to take a post at St Nathaniel's, but was briefly inconvenienced by an awkward case involving mistaken identity, a traffic infraction and a runaway donkey. He wears a regular, un-menacing topper, a morning-suit, and some very shiny shoes. He lives in a well-appointed townhouse and lunches at the Parthenaeum, and his ambition is to grow even better sidewhiskers than Mr Pooter next door's. He prescribes tonics and regular exercise, and thinks that what London could really use more of is less bats.

Alright, the first chapter of the nonadventures of Doctor Taupe-Wainscot, the Pabulous Physician, can be read on FrillyShirt! So far, it's an introduction to the character and the conceit of the story, and his run through the tutorial. His first steps in the city proper shall follow!

Part three is here! I only made it so far as the end of breakfast in this update - the rest of the day's adventures shall follow. If I haven't made use of your contribution yet, rest assured I shall when it fits best into the narrative! And rest similarly assured that the doctor's opinions do not reflect my own.

I like to think that the good doctor exudes so much normalcy that he is becoming a bit of a celebrity among the Northbound, Correspondence-singed, Mirror-marched, Vake-hunting, Hell-faring, Death-defying and otherwise utterly and irredeemably abnormalized citizens of the Neath. "Egads!", they say, "he called her Victoria! Doesn't he know...?" or "Goodness mine, look at him and Mr Sacks! He has no clue at all!"

I must say that my biggest regret this Hallowmas was not asking the good doctor for a confession. I can just imagine his guilty admission of the time he had a large glass of sherry before dinner (impropriety) or when he read the last page of a novel when only halfway through (curiosity) or the time he said "fiddlesticks!" when his bridge contract failed (violence). I'm sure his confessors would go away confused and wondering if he was performing an act of guile on them at that very time.

It sounds like the sort of completely average fellow who, by the force of sheer fate guided luck, bumbled his way into fame, fortune, and the inner workings of the world; all without being at all aware of any of it. He blithely goes about his day as spies observe him (believing he possesses untold secrets), men emulate his fashion (as they see him as a social icon), and all other manner of events sway at his slightest movement without him ever being the wiser.

Cheers, ocelot - I shall set it up! For now, here is Part Nine - in which the doctor celebrates the Feast, makes the acquaintance of Mrs G------- and also of Mrs C----------, discusses legal matters, ventures to try some unfamiliar tipples with a member of The Set and a consular clerk, discovers where the devils hold their balls, and does some doctoring for a patient who is neither a cat nor a raven.

I beg forgiveness, folks; we've been ill round our way, and in no congenial mood for writing. But, we're taking a holiday this weekend, which shall hopefully afford the time I need to bring you up to speed with the doc! Remain assured that no calling-card shall go ignored; I may simply need to delay until I can incorporate them into the narrative.

Hello hello! Pardon the unconscionable delay, but Part Twelve can now be read! I do hope the image quality is up to snuff - my computer died, and I haven't yet been able to find where I stashed my Photoshop disc to install on its replacement. Oh well - I can always come back later and re-upload them if need be.

I most certainly haven't! Interest seemed to drop off after doing four updates in five days, so I figured I'd give it a little time and let people catch up in their own time. Plus, I've been a trifle under the weather and needed to clear my head, both literally and figuratively. But, I daresay it's time to pick it up again...

Fate's guiding hand keeps many of us out of the more, interesting, sections that life has to offer. Like a Choose Your Own Adventure book where the story is supposed to be about dashing adventure on the high seas but you choose the path that makes you the clerk that the adventurers visit every so often to sell their loot to.

  • We'd make our character available as well--though we might try to trick him into becoming briefly involved in matters somewhat more exciting. A hint of lacre in a meal, or a cat hidden away in a box. You know the sort.

((What we mean by this is that, if we're involved, we might send Social Actions which appear to be harmless on the surface, but which might cause rather more serious repercussions as a result. We'd try to avoid anything that would start an entire storyline, obviously, but it'd be difficult to continue this if all your character did was sit around eating lunch.))

As for tone: You could narrate everything in the "grumpy old man" voice and tone. "Back in the day we had none of this humbuggery." Something similar to Clint Eastwood in the early parts of the movie Gran Torino.

As for format: I think a blog with occasional updates might work out the best, whenever the character runs across something he/she detests.

As for Destiny: I suppose helping out all the other regular people close by when the lights suddenly go out would be in-character.

Busybusybusy... and, I have to admit, I'm not quite sure where to go next with the Doctor. I'd like to level him up a bit, and I'll have to plan which content is too brave and daring for him. Say, what would folks think of him going to zee for a spell, using content from Sunless Sea's upcoming Early Access release? Perhaps a pleasure-cruise on a friend's boat, interrupted to a moderate degree by pirates, zee-bats and the loss of the best dinner-service to a felonious but well-mannered crab?

Great Caesar's ghost, am I really half a year behind? I've had Taupe-Wainscot #13 half-finished for ages, but I've just been creatively bereft, worn out from full-time work and from *waves hands vaguely* life... things. People have been terribly kind, sending me prompts and such, and the doc's not even going to get back to London until the end of this update. I had a bit of a breakthrough on the cursed thing today; hopefully Ham and Stout's adventures will continue soon.

The Most Boring Man in Fallen London, Part Ten, in which the doctor is an unwitting wild card in half a dozen of the Neath's finest schemers' schemes! This one turned out quite longer than I planned, so it's more of an epistolary bringing-up-to-date than I'd entirely intended. What I'd imagined would follow - concerning Fallen London's more direct and brutal rogues - will instead make up Part Eleven!

Ah! Wonderful! S.F. will be in contact with Taupe-Wainscot regarding their mutual acquaintance at their--that is, Ferenczy's--earliest convenience.

Quite wondrous! I am of a mind to hunt some rats to send to the poor Doctor.

This is such a cool idea - I have some reading to catch up on, I think! Big Grin

Might do a boring person of my own eventually. Perhaps an oblivious socialite; they're always fun.

I had not seen this thread before today, but this is way more fascinating than it has any right to be. ^_^

I thought I'd necro this thread to send on a little "bravo." Most fan fiction I've read has been of quality varying from horrible, through tedious, to adequate. This is quite good, IMO, and more literate than the general crop.

The Starveling Cat! The Starveling Cat!
Let's see the doctor rationalise that!

I have hit a mild sort of snag - the doctor's Watchful is high enough to start drawing the first Recalling the Surface card - and it seems to be so common as to, in fact, have a 100% draw rate. I'm holding off on resigning him to Neathy life for now - not to mention that he's hardly the sort to have a storied history of secret knowledge and cunning crimes - but if they all exhibit this behaviour, then he'll need a five-card lodgings to be able to draw just one card. Oh well; I shall see what happens.

I think the next episode shall involve continued investigations of death and devilry, and also some discoveries of animal oddities. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good name for his Bandaged Raven? (For that matter, does anyone have any suggestions for the doctor's own given name? I have a few ideas, but I'd be delighted to hear yours!)

D'you know, I think there's already a bird called Chastity in the Fallen London canon - a deviless's parrot, or something like that? Anyhow, the reason I came to post is 'cause I've created an index page for all the episodes - just thought if might be handy - which you can find here.

I think he should name the raven after someone he knew on the surface. Then, perhaps, when 'someone from the surface' comes looking for him....well, comedy could possibly ensue?

(edit: Oh, oh, name it after his aunt.)

I have been slowly accumulating more rats. It is not a speedy process.
I had to get 77 Venge-Rats first, okay. It's a matter of vengeance. Vengeance against not having 77 venge rats.
