An occurrence! Your 'Ambition: Enigma' Quality is now 1!
Please don't share the answer liberally or trivially: do by all means share clues. The Enigma Ambition is real. I've put it on my mantelpiece; here's how it appears on my profile:

I'm going to respect the request not to just share the answer, but will say the following things:
- Finding it takes more than one step;
- I would not have done so without a discovery shared by LordPaido on IRC;
- The moments between my last surmise and actually acquiring the quality were of unalloyed excellence, and I wouldn't want to spoil them for anyone.
I'll try to answer questions helpfully, so long as I can do so without detracting from the potential fun. edited by Alexis on 1/13/2014

Oh, excellent! Well done, folks. This has made my evening. Thanks for respecting the request in the solution.
I'm mindful of how frustrating people found a previous treasure hunt, so I've scattered quite a number of precursor clues (nearly sixty, in fact, although most of them are identical) to make it a slightly less binary experience, and allow future generations to stumble on it. Apologies for any frustration: but this is not, and will never be, an essential part of the game, or even of Mr Eaten. (EDIT: there is a little bit of content in the Ambition, but don't count on many updates, either.) edited by Alexis on 1/4/2014

There are worse places, although also better places, than a meta thread about meta content could go than a Fight Club quoteversation.

The way this thread's gone saddens me, but with hindsight I totally understand why. By the standards of an ARG this is a trivial puzzle - but by the standards of a CRPG or an MMO or indeed FL it's unusually hard. The customary and accepted response of people to a puzzle in a game is to google it after a few minutes of faffing about, and make frustrated posts on forums when the answer doesn't show up. I'm not sneering! That's just how it is.
Ambition: Enigma is a throwaway bit of fun - I need my side projects to stay sane now Mr Eaten is Official Failbetter Content, but A:E will always be much tinier and much less serious than Mr Eaten was. I'd like to see people happen across the clues and follow through, to whatever elements I add later. I'd like a friendly conspiracy of silence about it.
As it is, what I think we'll see is people coming here via Google, we'll get a twenty-page constantly necro'd thread of 'please PM me', and people will go busting in without solving the puzzle or knowing the background and be disappointed because it's just, like, taken all their stuff and given them some arty rambling and some content they don't understand.
I am inclined to
1/ lock this thread. 2/ open a new thread with a policy ('the first rule of Enigma is that we don't talk about Enigma... it's meta, it's optional, it gives no rewards') and link to an_ocelot's doc in its current form 3/ moderate people asking about it and point them politely to that policy (4/ replace the link if an_ocelot goes mad with power or gets bored of being a doc maintainer)
This is a little higher-maintenance than I'd planned, but we're about to hire a community manager and I prefer it to the current situation.
Does anyone else have any thoughts about unintended consequences if I do this?

I...wha...buhwha? I am so confused. o_o Granted I'm not usually good at solving mysteries anyway, but I really have no idea what's going on here. If there were any hints, I never noticed them apparently. I presume that something more complicated than access codes are involved this time? Although if a clay man alt can get it maybe it is an access code...hm.
(EmilyStAubert no longer works for Failbetter? That's unfortunate, I quite enjoyed her writing. I hope she's doing well.)

Cool! I think you posted, earlier, that I'd aroused interest: and that was a secondary motive in all this. Once an English teacher, always an English teacher. :-) And Borges in particular is to interactive narrative what Aristotle is to science, but much more readable. Hyperbole much? Possibly. But the number of ways in which he anticipates games and interactive stories are doing, in form or content or technique or theme - without ever doing anything strictly non-linear - is astonishing.

Yeah no kidding. I got to the point of looking into hermetic mysticism via free association from Borges comments on the aleph being a man pointing to both heaven and earth, to "As above, so below"

PMs sent. I'd advise anyone who wants to figure it out themselves to stay away from IRC, at least for the time being. In my opinion, not everyone has been restrained in their hints, and as a result some of those who've reached the answer have found little satisfaction in it.

The moderation has the potential to be the biggest wild card.
You, Alexis, have earned a bit of a cult of personality from your forum interactions. People like "talking to the tiger" because you're "the guy" and wield the power around these parts but also because you have genuine human interactions. I know it's part of your mid/long-term plans to diminish in this capacity, and there will ostensibly be in place a barrier between you and us.
In practice, the purpose of the community manager is to enable clear communication, but people are not solely rational. To be clear, I'm not saying this is the wrong move.
If you produce a thread with the need to be moderated at the same time as you introduce a new person, there is the danger of first impressions being weighted towards having to redirect, edit, and ultimately adjust poster behavior, which could leave a sour taste with some.
It may ultimately be better to remove this thread for some period of time (driving a few stragglers to an_ocelot or other non-official sources until the fervor dies down). Once the community manager has been established and the community adjusts to the new state of "the relationship" it would be a better time to start a new thread that would require moderation.

And if you don't allow people to talk about them on the forum, they'll just take their chat and their buzz elsewhere - leaving the forum less active and less useful (and leaving you, as the game creators, less in control of how how things like spoilers are/aren't handled).

Well, I'm completely stupid. I've got a hint (thank you Flyte!) and googling led me to a thing that matched the wording in the hint...and now I'm stuck. (I looked at the profile as Flyte suggested above, but all it does it taunt me with the "passion" destiny that nobody knows how to get :p). I looked in what I thought might be a related bit of London as well, but saw nothing new there. clearly I'm missing something obvious. I can't do cryptic crosswords either. *shrugs* nevermind. kudos to those smarter than me. That was going to by my so-called "guide" (really just a more user-friendly tour of the clues that I'd rarified and obfuscated significantly).
I'd started writing it over an_ocelot's original document some time yesterday when I realized the doc had been posted to the forums. It seemed to me (and a few others) both appropriate and somewhat urgent to do something about it, since the doc came from the IRC channel to begin with and had at that point been expanded well beyond an_ocelot's original bare-bones to include nearly all of the text of the clues within and outside of EB. That seemed like much more of a spoiler now that the initial puzzle's been solved, than when people were master-sleuthing it on IRC before. But it didn't seem fair to leave people completely hanging either, since others had already clearly profited from the doc and latecomers were at something of a disadvantage, having missed out on the starting frenzy. I anticipated a lot of grumbling if some jerk like myself just deleted the whole doc without a word. Regardless, the link was just hanging out there, it was late and I was feeling internet-justicey so there it is.
While I'm reasonably satisfied with the resulting guide, I'm inclined not to upload it after all now, in light of the current conversation. If you, Alexis, are fine with just an_ocelot's clue-list then that seems better to me anyway. The only reason I did anything to anything was on account of it not sitting right with me, having so much already-worked-out information just dumped onto the forum—trivially, as it were. edited by Dawson on 1/10/2014

I think the problem with this thread is that it is serving both people who are searching for the first step and also people who have found it and want to talk about what the initial content contains. Maybe two separate threads might be an idea? Or more judicious use of spoiler cuts?
For anyone new to the thread, I suggest just sticking to the first page - it contains all the clues you need to get started.

To reiterate what streetfelineblue said, handing out the access code would go against the spirit of the content. Hints are ok though.
To get started, visit the tiger keeper. He'll tell you about a map, and you need to figure out what he's referring to. From there you'll need to be clever and piece together some obscure references. It helps if you're familiar with a certain 20th century South American author, although it's not strictly necessary.
I should also note that the enigma ambition so far has no in-game benefits. The storylets it gives are the lowest pence-per-action in the entire game, and you have to give up a possibly substantial portion of your wealth to even use them. It doesn't give much in the way of in-game lore, either. It does tell you about the game design process, and musings on interactive fiction in general. It is very meta. It is not necessary to play the game.

Sure! I don't mind consenting adults sharing hints or indeed telling each other the answer. This isn't Cicada: I just want to provide some polite, low-effort protective measures to prevent players from accidentally trampling on their own fun. One of the IRC participants sent me (with, he assures, the permission of other participants) a summary of what happened on the IRC, and it reads as a dozen people having great fun and then five dozen people getting frustrated, trying to bang in solutions at random with the heel of their hands, and coming away dissatisfied when they succeed. That's a bit of a shame.

If you're okay with a list of bare clues, and indeed _that_ list of bare clues, that's fine by me. Honestly I was figuring a hint-through that leads up to those clues (and stops there) would be more welcomed than what I did, which I really started very quickly just so people coming into IRC didn't have to keep replying to "what are the clues?!?!" However, I was trying to keep from asking you all for a ruling on it or any forthcoming hint-through.
Personally, as a player, I think I'd prefer a hint-through document that also includes links to those clues, but again, I recognize that doing that on your current plan would imply endorsement and that is something rightly to be avoided.

The process is somewhat similar Wells, mostly at the request of Alexis.
Speaking of which, Alexis: I just complete the two parts for leaving the Enigma 1 area, and I want to say that (as a fellow game designer), you have a lot more self-awareness than most and I applaud you for it.

"Welcome. Nothing here exists. An occurrence! Your 'Ambition: Enigma' Quality is now 1!"
Absolutely lovely. I was over thinking it, many thanks to Zephyr and Aximillo for the delicious hints.
Now let's see how little we all exist, shall we?

Hah hah hah, it's an access code, I went to prison for nothing . . .
Clearly I should have kept to my prior plan and slept on it.

I suspect that Enigma is intended to be a replacement for SMEN for the highly-committed; those dedicated fools pouring over every scrap of information in-game and out. For those scraping the very edges for secrets, their reward is the very last dregs of content, things shuffled away into forgotten places, experiments that didn't quite work, that sort of thing.
I'm expecting things to get even more esoteric from here on out. Which I guess serves as a warning.

Can anyone send me a PM about a hint on where to start please? I'm a bit lost already and I haven't the foggiest idea where to look and I have looked. If anyone doesn't mind a small hint would be appreciated!
EDIT: Nevermind, the IRC gave me a starting hint and I've figured it out! Then again, perhaps I should have got it sooner considering the content of the Labyrinth of Tigers with later progress in it. Oh well, at least I figured it out. Certainly was quite invigorating! Now to figure out how to advance in it... edited by Arthur_Pendlebrook on 1/5/2014

Is the continuation a branch or a new storylet?

It's a storylet at the same place where you can meet MONSIEUR PLEAT'S MESMERIC GAZE.

Well, for starters, I don't have the Enigma. But some clues can be found in the very beginning of your adventure. Your very first act, so to say.

Well! I can confirm that the IRC was definitely overthinking it significantly for a long time. Whew. That was a bunch of fun - thank you, Alexis. Looking forwards to further updates.

I don't think I'll be going to the place, though. Not yet.

I think I got tunnel vision. All I see are clues for what I think my last clue leads to, but they are so flimsy that I could just as well be wrong.
Very frustrating, but it could hardly be called an enigma otherwise.

Well I found one clue quite independently. I am almost certain I know what map is being referred to in said clue, but I have no idea what to do with that map besides stare at it helplessly. edited by Ember on 1/5/2014

Aaargh, I can't help but think I'm massively overthinking this, much like the Mirrorbox of last year. At least I managed to solve that, in the end... here I've got no clue. Well, I have lots of clues, I just can't put them all together! Here's to another few hours of thinking and altogether too many busted access codes and 404 errors.

As I googled the Enigma Ambition, it spat out this interesting little mantlepiece. Judging from the content of her journal, this lady probably have not played in a long time, but she has Ambition: Enigma at 5. Could it be that the Enigma Ambition was something that has always been there?
