I appear to be stuck in picking up Enigma 1, so I must ask: are the Mirror-Marshes related in any way? Perhaps a small clue might be in order, for those of us who are slow and frail of mind. Meaning myself. Please.

I could use a link to the IRC document--I bookmarked it on my work computer (for shame!) but not at home.

To reiterate what streetfelineblue said, handing out the access code would go against the spirit of the content. Hints are ok though.

To get started, visit the tiger keeper. He'll tell you about a map, and you need to figure out what he's referring to. From there you'll need to be clever and piece together some obscure references. It helps if you're familiar with a certain 20th century South American author, although it's not strictly necessary.

I should also note that the enigma ambition so far has no in-game benefits. The storylets it gives are the lowest pence-per-action in the entire game, and you have to give up a possibly substantial portion of your wealth to even use them. It doesn't give much in the way of in-game lore, either. It does tell you about the game design process, and musings on interactive fiction in general. It is very meta. It is not necessary to play the game.

  • Edit: I'm cutting the amount of info here since my original post was possibly too spoilerish for some. You can shoot me a PM if you want more hints as I'm happy to provide guidance without giving the answer.

Suffice it to say that I didn't have to know anything about a South American author and was surprised to hear others used this route to solving the puzzle. Skimming this thread for mentions of where to find the clues (two of the clues in my case), then finding them (which required some knowledge, but nothing related to the aforementioned author) and not over-thinking the puzzle was how I did it.

Thank you! I continue to be stupid and clueless, but at least not hintless.

EDIT: And I'm in thanks to Pennywise's comments, thank you!

No idea why you people spoiled it so hard in this topic, short of giving them the whole answer you couldn't spoil it harder...

Well, I think you'd be relieved to hear that there ARE people who still doesn't get it, despite the "couldn't spoil it harder"-ness

  • Does this require any googling/reading books?

Lumyire, the way I read Harlequin's post, they're not saying people have given so many hints that the puzzle is trivial. They're saying that a number of the hints which have been given have the potential to significantly compromise the enjoyment of anyone who reads them before solving it. I share this view.

Whether you need to search or read anything may depend on just which spoilers you've read. But if you start in a largely unspoiled state, you will probably have to do at least one of those things.

I think the problem with this thread is that it is serving both people who are searching for the first step and also people who have found it and want to talk about what the initial content contains. Maybe two separate threads might be an idea? Or more judicious use of spoiler cuts?

For anyone new to the thread, I suggest just sticking to the first page - it contains all the clues you need to get started.

If someone could give me a bit more of a hint, I've been looking at the clues already provided, but the puzzle pieces just aren't clicking for me.

Ambition: Enigma can be used on Clay Men to escape the Place of Little Screaming.

Side effects: You can't seem to get a normal ambition. You can't get to the Nex page. (You better believe I was gonna become a member of the House of Chimes as DISOBEDIENT. I'd LOVE to do that.)

(EDIT: I can get home, I was snowbound, I am dumb)

What do you mean you can't get to the Nex page? I can get there just fine (I'm just at Enigma 1 though, and I'm not sure I want to continue. I could grind back all those Secrets and maybe the Confident Smiles, but disposing of all the Sulky Bats would mean get rid of my very first pet and companion, that stayed with my character for years now. So sad.)

Nono, I mean as a Clay Man. My Clay Man account used the ambition to escape and he cannot get to the Nex page, as he is Clay.

Oh! I'm not very familiar with Clay Men mechanics ^^
