Today, the seventh of December, is officially the holiday known as Ratmas! Officially! It's a long-standing tradition, you know. I didn't just make it up! Where are you going? Come back!

Okay! So! Ratmas! What is it? It's a very simple holiday to follow. This is what you do: Send rats. To other people. Easy, isn't it?
This year's Designated Official Rat Targ- er, Acceptant is none other than Alexis Kennedy!
Confused about how to send rats? Here's a tutorial!
First off, you'll need to find this card:

(Seekers of the Name can also use the Restitution card, to roughly the same effect)
The card contains two different kinds of rats, which you can then send! I'll let you choose whichever you want. I'm sure you can be trusted with good decisions.
You may send rats to Alexis Prime, or his secret, incredibly well hidden alt account. Be sure to attach a message! Maybe you want to submit thanks in advance for all the lovely Christmas content, or thanks for existing content, or a declaration of spite and hatred. The decision is yours!

Acceptable gifts also include cats, surprise packages, jewels, stabbings, betrayals, calling cards, snubbed acquaintances, Christmas cards, boxes of exploding misery... but rats are best and most good of all. If you're incredibly rich, you can send Fate! I mean, he already has about a billion fate, but go ahead I won't stop you.
If you're struggling to find rats: Use Unfinished Business in Spite, hunt a rat in the Department of Menace, or just buy them from the Bazaar. They're only tuppence apiece.
If you end up being aggrieved by the RNG, you can also draw the Gift card at your lodgings, using Write Letters. It'll cost you 1 fate, but surely that's an acceptable price to pay for rats, right?

If you've fallen on hard times, you can instead use a letter and the power of the Imagination

Perhaps, though, the quantities of rats offered by Fallen London seem... inadequate. Thankfully, a simulation exists to provide you with all the vast quantities of rats you'll ever need to send!

I think that's everything! Enjoy the holiday season. Carouse, and send rats. Be merry. And send rats. Rats.

Alternate titles: St Rattus' Day, Raturday, That Day With All The Rats In, Faber Festivus

I've taken Steps to ensure that Ratmas has ended an hour early. This is the kind of abuse of power I permit myself when I have to spend four hours blowing on the glowing ember which was our post-explosion server.

The funny thing is, it was actually an oversight. The Ratness category has existed since we first rebuilt the economy, but it's been incomplete so we never assigned newer items to it.

  • I think everyone who sent me rats or reasonable facsimiles has now received a Rat of Glory. If not, then consider writing me a letter of complaint from your lodgings, but also consider the possibility that I might send you a bomb instead. smile

Post your Rats on a String to a certain address
Send your rats to the right place, and you may receive something in return.

    Post a handful of rats.
The Compulsive Rat Fancier will reward your enthusiasm with one of his finer specimens. This will always gain you Rattus Faber Corpses. There may be other effects.
A matter of luck: it could go either way.

Post a staggering quantity of rats.
Why? What compels you to do this? This will always gain you many Rattus Faber Corpses

...Did we bury the server under a pile of rats?

Meanwhile, at Failbetter, the staff struggle through the hairy mounds to reach the servers.

"Sir, I think I've identified the problem. It's rats."

The server is back, so you may recommence sending rats. Due to the downtime, you can consider the 8th of December an honorary Ratmas as well. Its a rat weekend!

if you like you can consider the rest of the year ratmas. you can consider the rest of your life to be ratmas. i cannot stop you. i cannot stop rats.

  • If life gives you the glowing embers of your server, roast marshmallows. Or rats, if you prefer. You'll probably have leftovers for weeks.

I just want to keep the thing and never let it go, but it'll probably squirm out and eat my candles. Can't I store it in a glass of formaldehyde to prevent any rat thieves from waking up? I mean sure it might get all soggy and not work as an actual candle any more, but I want to keep it as a mantelpiece item in all its glory. So cruel!

Rat butts roasting on an open fire
Big Rat nipping at your nose
Rat-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up in irrigos

Everybody knows a ratcorpse and some lacre snow
    Help make the season right
Tiny rats with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know Ratgoat's on his way
He's loaded lots of traps and poison on his sleigh
And every Faber's child is going to spy
In the hopes that they won't die

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To rats from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times in many ways
A very scary Ratmas to you

It's Ratmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Ratmas time we send out rats with their postage paid,

And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy!
Throw your arms around the Neath at Ratmas time!

But say a prayer - pray for the other ones
At Ratmas time, it's hard but when you're having fun
There's a city outside your window
Full of stravling cats and fear
Where the only water flowing, is The Bazaar's bitter tears
And the Ratmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom

Well tonight that God its Alexis, instead of you!
And there'll be lots of rats in London this Ratmas time
The greatest gift he'll get this year is rats

    Where fungus ever glows
    And the Stolen River flows

Do they know it's Ratmas time at all?

Here's to you, send some rats to everyone
Here's to them underneath the burning sun
Do they know it's Ratmas time at all?

    Feed the Tiger
    Feed the Tiger
    Feed the Tiger
Let him know it's Ratmas time

    Feed the Tiger
Let him know it's Ratmas time

    Feed the Tiger
Let him know it's Ratmas time

    *repeat to fade*

Ratmas is not to blame, don't worry! Our hosting service unexpectedly rebooted all our servers, one of the servers failed to come up, and creating a temporary replacement required some obscure reconfiguration mojo.

I would like to submit a public bug report: Rats-on-a-string, Venge-Rat Corpses, Rattus Faber Corpses, and Starveling Cats are not under the Ratness category. This is clearly a massive, game-breaking oversight and needs to be fixed yesterday. This is a joke complaint please note this.

Dashing through the Neath, on a one-rat open sleigh,
O'er the shrooms we go, ratsending all the way!
Tigers in fezzes sob, as the rats pile high,
What fun it is to send some rats and make the postman cry!

Am deeply saddened that a mere rat-themed message to Alexis did not merit a rat. Curse the fact that I didn't bank the Lofty Square card!

Honestly, what a lovely picture! It's a very thoughtful thing. Failbetter's engagement with its community is laudable as ever!

On Ratmus Day, I send rats on a string.
One thousand strong, a glorious thing.
    They are quite a sight
In the middle of the night,
    Sacrificed for your rat bling.

His day must be quite surreal.

I suspect there is some deep and meaningful reason behind this that I wasn't around for, but..oooh! A bandwagon! I can't see any way this could POSSIBLY backfire. *leaps* Big Grin

(I do wish we could send living rats though, they make such lovely friends, I'm rather fond of them, and I always feel I'm somehow betraying my dear Albino Rat and her kin when I pay for things in rat-corpses.)

Why would you want to run from it? Imagine - a legion of aggrieved postmen bearing an endless procession of furry dead bodies? Your door buckling, the windows shattering before the seething tide?

    All shall be Rat.

Let the rattening commence and cease not until it is December 8th everywhere on this earth.

It saddens me that, from appearances, the Rats of Glory won't be something recurringly obtainable. The game of Pass The Rat (Until It Comes Alive And Mugs You, Scampering Into The Night)™ would have been a brilliant way of settling disputes between people.
