I didn't catch the full text (on a mobile device), but when you choose your destination on the Unterzee, The Iron Republic appears as an option and does not say it is locked for now, merely warning that the Iron Republic is a dangerous place. It looked like the prerequisite was some amount of an Infernal beverage, but (because on a mobile device) couldn't see which, or how much.
Anyone else seen this? I'm heading back out shortly, once I've stocked up on Sherry and Brandy. edited by ElseWiseIAm on 4/21/2012

I have to disagree with passionario- this is not a railroad, this is a wild rollercoaster ride which might take you to unknown places. In fact there are several branching paths all with theier own ways of screwing you. Now i am very very pissed because of the whole 1 visit per 1 zee voyage thing but hey if Failbetter wants to milk us a bit more power to them. Some more thoughts on this....thing. I love how it just feels like a set of letters from a person going more and more confused and insane every passing day. I hate how there are no explanations on the las fate-locked choice. I love how it it tests weird qualities like commited and admirer of art. I hate how it makes little sense for them not to be replaced with luck checks. I love the potential reward. I hate how it has 3! fate-locked 1-time options. I love how this place is INSANE. I hate how this place is INSANE. INSANE INSANE INSANE INSANE INSANE INSANE InSaNe iNsAnE iiiinnnnsssaaaaneeeee...

The biggest difference between those checks and the luck checks that we all hate so much are that with a luck check, failure means that we've got nothing, while at the Iron Republic we just take a different path - the reward is still there (a point of Changed) .

If the idea behind the latest tweet on the official feed was to make me mouth-frothingly excited to get to the Iron Republic ... mission accomplished. Mission oh so diabolically accomplished.

Am in the Iron Republic.
....
It is genius.
And insane.
And dangerous.
And you can't use any form of menace reduction items here. Be warned!

No it is not a bug. It will reset you to day 0. The second option is said to raise your changed quality quite a bit. There is no chance of assimilation or permanently losing all your inventory. Proceed without caution. Do not be afraid. Havin g your quality at 5 would be helpful. Clouds are like bunnies.. edited by Dmitri Zhiriakov on 5/10/2012

Can anyone inform me how that little quirk boosting fate option works? Is it a "set you to x" kind of thing, or an actual CP boost?

Are there any unexplored branches of the IR that I should look at? I am about to get there. Also is there a google doc or something with a list of what links to what? I know some people said they were making their own spreadsheets.

I just left the Republic for the second time.
I feel that it can be that place when one goes back when one gets tired of grinding, to discover new pathes, having one's menace rise and fall without a care in the world.
In fewer words, it feels like a written kaleidoscope. Every time different, every time entertaining.

Grind romantic notions and surface silk scraps, and then bribe your way with them. Once they start asking for more expensive stuff, simply use the cards that raise what you need, or trade via the built in storylets. Once you get the first part of the 3 part storylets (A Guided Tour of Polythreme and A Little Spy Work), you unlock two cards that are a sure way to progress (Fractious Furniture and The Zailors at Polythreme's Harbour). In both cases, you can get 100% chance of going through. If you're waiting for the sure-fire cards, spend your extra actions grinding romantic notions and surface silk scrap, as it's very profitable.

If you are unlucky, even when bribing, then you don't get 12, you get 11 and change and have to start over. As I've done twice now. That's hardly 100%.

Here is how you do it without Furniture and Sailors: Use the Bribe option and supply clay men with Surface Silk until the price goes up to Romantic Notions. Use Bribe with Romantic Notions option two or three times: this will get you up to 8 in at least one quality and hopefully about the same in the other. Having done that, use the conversion option (buttonhole a Clay Overseer or pull a mask) to dispose of the quality you don't need completely. This should raise the quality you are aiming for up to 11 or almost so with at least several actions to spare before you run out of Unnatural Exuberance.
I used this method to run about 11 cycles in a row and did not fail a single time. It doesn't always go to 13, but virtually guarantees you will get 12. edited by Lawrence Growe on 5/8/2012

I have done this. If you are unlucky enough when bribing and when converting you still end up with 11 and change at the end rather than the 12 you need. I'm happy for you that you have not been unlucky enough to have this method fail, but it can and has failed. I recognize that it is less likely to fail than succeed, but the mechanic is still based on luck checks which means, eventually, someone is going to get a bad run on luck checks. It's just the nature of the law of large numbers. That someone was me. Twice.
Whenever you have a mechanic that is based on luck, 100% is never guaranteed.

Does that include clothing and pets?
Happily one is not required to go unclad in the Iron Republic. Even devils are not so uncouth.
One may freely bring one's menagerie and followers, but be warned that some of them may be inspired by the general lawlessness to... behave in unexpected ways.
Menaces, by the way, do not appear to be a cause for concern here. I am somewhat nervous that I may implode in a nightmare-ridden, blood-drenched, scandalous heap the instant I set foot in London again, mind.
(now on my second loop through, still in pursuit of my Nemesis... taking notes, trying to determine if this place is truly lawless or if there is a method underlying the madness) edited by Quil on 5/3/2012

Some intriguing tweets from Failbetter folks:
Alexis Kennedy: the upcoming Iron Republic content from @goatdance is quite something. The man's been drinking the wrong things in the right way. Nigel Evans: Well that's the fragile balance of my mind shot to bits. Let's hope the players like it.
