It would appear there are a couple new action under Society and Scandal. You can send calling cards to other players to become their Acquaintance, which comes with an associated Influence stat. The full effects of this remain to be seen, but sending and accepting the card gives a bit of Making Waves.

Also, the Private Supper option seems to have capped the Confident Smile gain at 12. I don't know about the social actions for other stats.

Edit: Somewhere along this thread, I decided to send Mr Eaten my calling card, and got one in return. The full ramifications of this still haven't played out yet, but I'm reporting on it in this thread as I go.

  • The folks who have gone over Influence 77 will just have to snub more people when we introduce other things you can do with your Acquaintance slots. :-)

Of the 2000-odd users who have at least one acquaintance, here's the breakdown of acquaintance numbers after a few days

    71+ ... 1.4%
    61-70 ... 0.3%
    51-60 ... 0.5%
    41-50 ... 1.0%
    31-40 ... 1.4%
    21-30 ... 1.4%
    11-20 ... 4.2%
    3-10 ... 22.7%
    2 ... 15.5%
    1 ... 51.4%

NB that 2000-odd is quite a small minority of our active userbase (somewhere around 10-15%, though it depends on how you define 'active'. So the vast majority of our users have no acquaintances at all! but of course the mechanic has been out less than a week, and it'll filter out to less frequent players (we do have users who log in a few times a month).

Of course even a blurry picture like this is immensely useful and interesting to us when planning social narrative. And it mimics the patterns that show up all the time on the web: little local friendship networks, with very socially active individuals linking those mini-networks together.

A couple of takeaways I'd point out to you guys:

    (i) If you're even reading these boards, let alone posting, always remember, you're probably in the minority of very engaged players;

(ii) if you're reading or lurking on these boards and thinking OMG how did these people get to 70??? then don't worry. Very few people have more than a handful of Acquaintances.

I would like to report that my fake Mr Wines has been caught and is now CrudeImpostor_Mr Wines! Perhaps this implies that the other Master's accounts you find are authentic? Either way, a good lark all around.

On the subject of calling cards, I thought people may be interested in this snippet of history about Victorian calling cards, scroll down to the bottom of the page to see some particularly fancy styles of the time. (I had no idea some of them had tassels! 0_o Good grief.) Plus there's some fascinating info on the etiquette. For example, you could indicate you had called in person, rather than sending a servant, by turning the top left corner of your card down.
    http://www.daysofelegance.com/callingcards.html

Perhaps if you feel like describing your particular card when you send it, this might provide some inspiration? I've received a couple of cards with descriptions of the card in the message, and it's a delightful surprise! ♥ I'm going to start doing this too.

Well, yes, the traditional method does usually involve chugging laudanum until you run out of laudanum, nightmares, or vital signs. However, using the last vestiges of my common sense, I've decided to substitute Greyfield's First Sporing, of which I have plentiful supplies.

This is in no way because I am cowering in my wine cellar, with the calling card very far away on my dining-room table.

Ok, now. Yes, my character was lucky enough to be invited to partake in such an activity, quite some time ago ^^

Does this mean we will be able to ambush and stab people in the future simmilar to how we can hide rats in cat boxes? Or poision in medicine?

Hm, first time I read that, my first thought was something much more bawdy than a stabbing. Unless you mean "stabbing" in a very metaphorical sense *wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more* XD

Well, you can't send me a calling card because you've already accepted mine, Blackleaf. And I do intend to use the card, as soon as I can do so with a modicum of safety.

...As it happens, I am neither dead nor insane at the present moment, via the age old trick of hiding in my wardrobe with a bottle of laudanum until the problem goes away.

It's not the stabbing really, and if there was a good reason, my character would jump down a well. It's just that SMEN is self-destructive. I sold my soul for a price, but hey, at least I got something for it. And I can get it back, if I miss it. SMEN wants you to irrevocably mangle your soul for no reason whatsoever, while screaming "The Number! The Number!". Such things are more fun to read about, then to actually participate in.

Aw man, I would accept that card just for the sake of halving my stats. Shoot, forget half, it can take all five of my stat levels, I mean the ink is made of irrigo. Irrigo!

Edit: I would be remiss if I didn't ask, is the card by chance, edible in any way?

Edit 2: Not gonna lie, I mainly would want that card so I could attempt to eat it.

It is, indeed, capped! The second chance items had been an inflationary situation for years, and we wanted a way to deflate it without being to aggressive about breaking into people's existing stockpiles. It happened now as part of a set of changes to social actions that you'll be seeing over the next few months: so hold the grumbles for now, because you may find either that the grumbles are reduced or that you'll want to grumble a lot harder in a month or three. :-)

I have only one complaint. All this social acting with confessions, dinners, calling cards, cats and other subjects has left me with a contacts list so unwieldily large that it sometimes takes up to half a minute to load. And by then I forget what I was about to do.
    I forget often and easily.

*ahem* As it seems the mods do not want me copying the entire story here, I'll limit the updates on my quest to teasers. I plan to do a full write-up later, which I will post on my tumblr, which handily means Spacemarine0 can reblog it if he wishes.

So you are not left entirely disappointed now, here's a little something:
Whisper a treasured secret to the well
You will forget this. Yes. This is a gift from no-one to no-one. Everything is lost in the North.
Unlocked with 1x Reported Location of a One-Time Prince of Hell, Fasting and Meditating to a Foolish End 8

Costs 7 actions. Two similar options have been unlocked, costing a Veils-Velvet Scrap or Cantigaster Venom, which I do not have.

Apropos of nothing, I have extended my card to Mr Eaten. We shall see if anything horrible results from this.

Oh, and experimentation shows that you gain Making Waves from sending, accepting, and having your cards accepted. Snubbing someone raises your Making Waves, reduces theirs, and makes them lose 5 Confident Smiles. Snubbing someone does nothing to stop you from becoming their acquaintance later, however. None of these gains seem to be very high, probably just one change point each, but someone'd have to look into that more closely.

So... Mr Eaten has a single calling card in circulation. Receiving it from someone else halves one's stats and afflicts one with death and madness; it opens up what appears to be the fourth means of acquiring St Destin's Candle.

    This is delightful.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

I don't think it's the same card as "A fine day in the Flit", it's its own card called "Call in favors in the Flit". I think.

Also going to a mysterious island to meditate and throw secrets into a well is something I'd like to do. A pity this is SMEN, so there is no reward for your labor, only misery. Still reading this is so much fun.

Having thought about I'd like to get on the list for the card. Unless it does turn out to be a ridiculously elaborate Destin's method in which case it can skip me.

I need some time to get ready for it but I figure even if the card multiplies rather than passes from player to player it'll be a while before it gets to me.

Actually I'm curious to hear what happens when the card is finally passed from Alexander to someone else. Will it be like Destin's and multiply? If so it'll pass on faster and faster as it snowballs. Or is it really a one of a kind item? Ad we all have to wait our turn to be damned?

As for the island I can't help but wonder if its possible to make your way through it without all those items even if it takes 100 times as long. Because I think I can get maybe ONE of those but it would mean aligning myself to a faction I don't want to after the Cave of Nadir. I guess I could get a second given enough time to grind scraps but that'll take a long while.

So has anyone got over 78? I feel bad that I sent out invites without counting properly and I'm wondering if there's any chance that people will still be able to accept those outstanding invites. (The 78th came in multiple hours after I hit 77.)

I broke 1000 scraps a few weeks ago. Im not in full scrap collector mode. Right now im grinding stats so they dont get devoured TOO much. As i said before: Both Me and Alexander has St.Destin's candle. Either this is a bug or its a trick that will mean our island adventures reward us with nothing but i dont think its releated to Destin.
Here's my theory: There was a programming that made it so the first person that sent a card to Mr.Eaten got a card back and then sending cards to Mr.Eaten got disabled.
When you send the card away, simmilar to St.Destin it doesn't go away. Atleast i dont think so. We are meant to snowball it, completely massacering our stats in order to spread out the card between players.

Correct me, if I am wrong, but isn't the only way to get Master's Blood is to sell the location of Nadir to the Revolutionaries? I wanted that item very much, but after seeing what the Device does, I have decided they are my least favorite faction, so I don't help them no more.

Most intriguing. I have, finally, used the card.

Offer Mr Eaten's Calling Card to a friend

It's a hoax, anyway. A Midnighter prank. Or worse, a Midnighter stratagem.

    Seal it carefully
Let no light fall upon it.

    Once sent:

    And gone

    A weight lifts.

And I retain the card. For now, at least. If I try to send it again I receive the message:

You have already issued an outstanding invitation for this action. It must be accepted or cancelled before you can send another invitation of this kind.

Your move, Blackleaf. And I must go for now, so I won't be able to comment on any further developments for a few hours.

I an fairly certain that the next Destins method involves that calling card, given that no bonus option presented itself after I hit Influence 77. However I do already *have* Destin's, so...

Either way, if a fourth method isn't found, it's probably related to the card. If a fourth method IS found, that card just got a lot more interesting...

I just came back. I'm probably going to start spamming invites now, but do you still need Tending Wounds invites? No problem in sending a couple more ^^

Blackleaf, do you have St. Destin's Candle? I've got it and can't send him one either. It's probably another option for getting a Candle.

Nope. Alexander has one too. Maybe only one person can send him it? Did Alexander just WIN the quest of the name or something?

That part with nerfing confident smiles gain is quite sensible, considering that I have 587, which is ridiculous (and I can make a safe bet that in comparison to some other people it's not actually that much). The problem is that I've checked it with my alt, and other options are also nerfed...

Oh god. What have you done. If Alexis doesn't either give you a candle or delete 10 of your stats i will be severely dissapointed.

  • Oh, it'll be fine. In fact, I'm sure that all manner of thing shall be well.

Edit: I... oh my. And also oh dear. I was not expecting a response. Certainly not this.

He also just declined my generous invitation to share a bottle of absinthe with him, which had been there for years. It seems he doesn't check his messages very often.

I'm starting to keep an eye on the Influence quality. It seems to have no CPs, we'll see what we can do of it ^^
