(( First off, I dont know if this is really a thread worth making. We could just go discuss the advent calendar somewhere else but after the success of the "Confessions" thread i thought i might aswell. ))

  • So as most of you know, Failbetter confirmed that they will be releasing a "Fallen london advent calendar".
Every day throughout december up until Sacksmas im guessing we will receive an access code over at https://twitter.com/EchoBazaar
and the Fallen london facebook page. These can be used to gain lore, some small items and perhaps some greater gifts later down the line.

This is a thread made to discuss them and the content they unlock! Have fun!
  • Happy sackmas in advance! All shall be well and etc, dont fall down wells though.

okay so I did a thing and thought I'd share it here

edit: no Alexes Kennedy were harmed in the making of this, except perhaps by bad poetry (sorry, your name just fit the meter)

(to the tune of 'Battle Hymn of the Republic')

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of our Goat
He has come to us from 'cross the Zee in a terrible swift boat
Fiery is his manner and magnificent His coat
    His hooves are marching onnnnnnn

    REFRAIN

Oh listen well my children, He has come to set us free
He will save us from the tigers and Alexis Kennedy
So light your Rats of Glory now and hearken unto me
    His hooves are marching onnnnnnn

    REFRAIN

So in this Neathmas season, be sure to spread the tale
Of our newfound savior come from beyond the pale
And may He visit you at night with a blood-chilling wail
    His hooves are marching onnnnnnnn

    REFRAIN

Alexis has another unique quality, called Stop Sending Me Rats You Lunatics.

Anyone who has ever sent Alexis rats has an invisible quality. There shall come a day when big cats of all stripes shall swarm the streets of London, and after that day, no-one with this quality shall ever be seen again.

This is explicitly an attempt to increase customer engagement in the present and the future. FBG has shifted its business priorities and has doubled down on Fallen London. This includes a graphic novel through a traditional publisher, a new self-contained game, and merchandising. Part of that means that the creatives need time and space to be creative. Thus, the new hire for a staffer whose focus will be things like: digital marketing, community management, etc. Part of the focus on engagement is purely "we need to eat" business. Nex purchases are the primary way of supporting Fallen London, and the two prevailing ways of selling Nex are: 1. Fate-locked stories and storylet options and 2. Convenience packages (action refreshes, menace reduction, etc.)

For #2, you have "Actionsmas" which is an experiment in removing the first-purchase hurdle and optimizing the value point.
For #1, you need to address conversion rate (how many people who access the content purchase it) and visibility (getting the content in front of more eyes). It's been becoming more clear recently that many players do not have good visibility into changes in the game, whether reworks of old systems, additions of new systems, or unlocked seasonal content that is available for a limited time (seasonal content is, by the way, a revenue generator as well as being a fresh addition). To address the visibility problem, there are multiple experiments going on, of which the advent calendar is one. Linking to other ways of increasing engagement and getting information is another (IRC, forums, etc.)

Basically, FBG wants to be able to pay its employees enough so that they can feed and clothe their families. They are doing an admirable job of balancing the needs of the business ($) and the desires of the playerbase (don't wring us dry and throw us aside). Much of this balance is powered by better engagement.

There have been a few questions batted around about the different channel links, the other pieces of the puzzle, etc. I'm not precluding some more fun reasons from contributing, but I wanted to make clear the forest surrounding the trees to hopefully bring a different perspective to the inquisitive minds on the forum.

Well it's ok as long as the angry tiger is at a distance. And has just been assailed by a squadron of rats with dynamite and pickaxes.

But then on the other hand those boxes of live rats had a terrifying ending, so.

Doing text searches at the Bazaar to see if the new Advent reward is saleable... you don't notice until you start looking, how many items have "rat" in the name. Presbyrate Passphrase. Gift of Adoration. Twelve-carat Diamond Ring. At this point I'm pretty sure those are all rat-related.

Could not have come at a better time. When I found out that the Tomb-Colonists wanted Collections of Curiosities I started wandering the Forgotten Quarter looking for signs to Thieves' Caches, and my Nightmares were close to becoming a problem. I had to dig out my Bejewelled Cane to make sure that the Merry Gentleman stayed away.

I am almost certain that nothing crawled into my ear to take up residence in my brain. Though... That very idea seems like it should induce nightmares. Why don't I have nightmares? Whaaaaa?

We expect the Advent Calendar text will show up on wikis after it's all over -but we don't want people getting in the habit of dumping content on these boards.

Part of the reason we're doing the codes through Twitter and Facebook is to encourage people to follow those channels, because they're really useful for announcements (as witness the number of people who missed the extra action announcements and keep sending us bug reports). So we'd rather you linked to Twitter or FB, and thanks for asking.

But it's feeding your raven that triggers the living story to hatch the egg. The egg itself isn't going to do anything, which is why there's a new option on the Kindness of Ravens card to incubate it.

This peace offering is made more amusing by the fact that I gained a measly 2 levels of Scheme: A Salon from the Great and the Good earlier, starting from 0. ~15 CP my arse.

I would shun the offering, but I am powerless to resist the whims of fate. Peace it is, RNG. For now.

Well, this seems to only clear the "Free of the Name" quality, but not to touch the "Seeking Mr. Eaten's Name" quality, right?

If so, then this isn't so bad. It's actually good.

When someone decided to stop Seeking the name they get "Free of the Name" and also lose "Seeking Mr. Eaten's name". This new code removes "Free of the Name", effectively giving this character a blank slate - they can choose to start Seeking from scratch, *if they want*, like any other new character who had never been a Seeker.

The interesting bit is that you can stop Seeking, use the code, and then be eligible for another Seeker trying to get St. Arthur's candle desperately looking for people willing to become new Seekers.

So, if you are (or were) a Seeker but have decided to drop out of the quest (or if you have an alt created just for this!) you can now help fellow Seekers get St. Arthur's!

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Further to my own tiers-mapping upthread, I have identified ten distinct item tiers which encompass all categorised goods, each of which describes one or more values, without any item conversions taking place within a tier. You can see it rainbow-style here. You'll note that Mysteries and Wines are in the lead, covering nine tiers each, followed by Infernal, Rag Trade, Rumours, and Wild Words at eight.

Today brings a very nice gift! I might almost feel driven to take a tall ladder to Hangman's Arch for an exile to stand on for a while. Take the weight off, so to speak.

Cheers much! I ended up going ahead and creating my own chart, which you can see and edit here - I can't guarantee I haven't missed anything, and it's not as pretty as it might be, but it covers a lot of the intermediary tiers and the items that can't be traded.

The second chart on this page covers items up to tier 5. For the higher tiers, you can tell if you know the sale price of the item. Tier 6 items like Airag and Searing Enigmas sell for 62.5 Echoes; tier 7 items, like Coruscating Souls and Tears of the Bazaar, for 312.5 Echoes; and tier 8 items for 1562.6 Echoes.

For what it's worth, I find Spacemarine9's blog to be an excellent source of news indeed. Very easy to keep track of the new content. His posts are part of the reason I am still playing.
And while FL's tweets are fun to read, reading them in a timely fashion is a problem. I get a ton of tweets on my Twitter, half the time I can't manage to read them all. So unless I go specifically to FL's twitter (which I do, but only once in a while to catch up), I often miss those tweets. I will be checking every day for December, obviously. But personally I don't think Twitter is that good for time sensitive announcements. Unless you have the stamina to read hundreds of messages every day.

This reminds me. Is there a mailing list for Fallen London? Where/why not?

Btw, it's hard to remember what started me playing. But I think it was TvTropes, actually)

I think if you link your email to your account then you get occasional emails about new updates. But they are very occasional.
You might have to change one of the "message me when..." settings on your account page if you're not getting them.

By a startling coincidence, we've just sent an email out. You do indeed get it if you

  • (i) have an email address linked
(ii) have 'message me with announcements' ticked
(iii) have never clicked 'unsubscribe' on an email (it's one-click perma-optout)

For reference, we mostly use these channels to announce stuff:

    - Twitter
    - Facebook
    - newsfeed on Messages page
    - forum posts
    - in-content announcements
    - Failbetter blog
    - mailouts

(+ Sunless Sea KS and blog)

....that's roughly from most to least frequent, which in turn is roughly from least to most hassle, since we could easily spend more time announcing changes than implementing them.

People always miss stuff, so the more channels you follow, the better! If you follow other unofficial fan channels too like wiki announcements or SN's tumblr, better still. No one channel is reliably followed by every player, so we like to get people signed up to as many as possible.

If I recall correctly, it means that one new card will be added to the deck each day. If you don't get a card on the first day, you might be able to draw two on the next day, and so on... that said, it was a year ago and I didn't write down the mechanics, so I could be wrong!

I used the email code yesterday and after logging in, it informed me that I now had 8 CHristmas Cards. The usual tally is seven, isn't it? So I suppose it was adding a single card.

Admittedly, since I don't intend to use them, this was meaningless for me personally.

It actually resets the number to 8, so the best use for it is to send the weekly allotment of cards and then use the code for extra +8 cards.

Umm, and then why is the mention of the fingerkings then?
I believe that's due to the valediction with the gift of 1x Favours in High Places and an Irrigo wipe being written on the other side of one's mirror
I suspect those blessings had less to do with fingerkings than with the occupants of a certain basement.

I'd never really thought about the basement-dwellers' mirror affinity before. Do we know anything about their link with Parabola?

Also there's a link to the irc channel at the very end of the code which means that it's 100% more officially approved than it was before.

Although the client linked is kind of not the best! use the kiwiirc link in my signature instead to achieve greatness.

I've lost track of whatever thread would be most appropriate for this, but I figure this is close enough: Those with Dreadful Surmise's may wish to take a look at their Lacre again. Caveat: I have no idea what it does.

I have two Surmises. Shall I volunteer to boldly go?

Question before I dare: Would using a Second Chance to safeguard a failure still cost the Surmise?

One for sorrow, two for joy. Three for Paris, four for Troy. Five for Athens, six for Thebes and seven... for a stone pig that still sleeps?

Why did it get so hellenistic all of a sudden? Is there any connection to previous cities?
