It was pretty ambiguous which one was the correct verse to start with, now its practically a tossup. I have no idea which is supposed to be the right one. The St Destin's Candle one makes it seem like you're about to go on and say something else, hinting towards 25:35. The Restitution one is all "you didn't feed them" which hints more towards 25:42. And the Contretremps one could go either way, honestly.

Watch it be 77, 49, or irrelevant (will get nightmares+wounds based on distance from correct number, but still with the main result)

If Alexis is not completely evil (and I still have hope) then a wrong answer will simply smite us to the River and Beth simultaneously but allow us to keep (most?) of our Enigmas.

Alexis is a big rude jerk but I think if he was trying to go for misdirection he'd pick three completely different verses; i mean, you've seen for yourself, it's not particularly hard to find passages which could be taken as reminiscent of SMEN. But I just Don't Know.
the passage being censored is an awfully good reason for you to keep repeating it to yourself wrong, anyway

What's the best way to get the University connections for the conversions? You need a bit more Benthic than Summerset even if you only go Tales of Terror->Implication->Incanabula->Enigma, so my heuristic's been:
- Always use Tales of Terror when I have a choice between them and Journals of Infamy.
- When I have too few Summerset connections, use A Colleague with a Problem. (One action for 5 cp of both connections, and 40 Cryptic Clues for future conversion.)
- When I have too few Benthic connections, use the Endowment of a University Fellowship. (Three actions and 1.5 Echoes of goods for 75 cp of either connection.)
I think that's best unless I'm missing another decent option.

Using the endowment takes about 1.6 actions worth of salts (unless there's a better way to get them then grinding candles in Veilgarden and bulk converting) plus 3 actions for 75 cp, for 75/4.6 ~= 16 cp/action with a single faction. If that's all you need, this blows A Colleague with a Problem's 5 cp/action out of the water.
So it seems to me that the best plan is to convert through a chain that only requires connections with one faction, so we can put the endowment to its most efficient use for grinding connections. Which is to say, farm Journals instead of Tales since I believe the entire Journals -> Implications -> Incunabula -> Enigmas chain uses only Benthic connections.

Inspired by the heartwarming comradery evident on this forum thread, I thought I may as well start converting my UI to Enigmas to get a sense of the conversation rate. I was promptly Hithed by William Dawson III, so there's my lesson learned.

Seeker island status update. I got the card from alexander. I gave up my job as a midnigher and became a poet to boost my stats. I got to the island. I burned up about 300 fate, over 100 social actions worth of menace reducers, and my veils-velvet. I got to about progress 40. Okay. Not bad for going it alone. In the morning I was going to announce I was on the island and ask for help doing the final push to 77. I was so close.
But then, out of nowhere, the game decides it wants to send me to the royal beth. Absolutely out of no where. I was completely blindsided. And it removed all of my progress. All 40 levels of meditating and fasting. And now I have basically nothing. No fate. No veils velvet. No profession. No progress. Nothing.
I'll try again tomorrow, but that royal beth episode was soul crushingly bad. Since I am no longer prepared for the island. Well. If I can't do it tomorrow I'll pass the card along and start preparing again. Just be warned. Its bad. Its really really bad. u_u edited by NiteBrite on 12/9/2013

Yikes.
Clearly the manager was hiding on the island. With a net. Did you get anywhere near Nightmares 8, or was it a rare success/failure? Maybe Alexis has destroyed the island and tht was his way of booting you off of it (I hope not, but...)

There were some changes from when alexander was on the island. One, progress and loss of progress could both range 1-10. so you could lose more than you gained. Making the whole thing a crapshoot. Two, you get menace both on success and failure. And three, when I did hit 8 nightmares it tried to take me to the royal beth and ate all progress instantly. Only it couldnt take me to the royal beth so I was caught in an infinite loop for a while. A loop of accepting going there and then it not taking me and trying to take me there again. Its effectively impossible. 300 fate, 20 actions a refresh, for someone going in without fate that would have been 600 actions. So basically imagine a very active player spending 10 days on an island making effectively no progress and then out of no where losing everything on day 10 because the game tries to send you to the royal beth. That is the current state of winking island. If this holds true for the rest of its run, well, that means its no longer possible to brute force the island. You are required to have a ton of the high value items. I just dont see any other way around it.
Note: The use of fate was my own choice. I wanted to do my run as fast as possible and make way for the next candidate as soon as possible. I know how frenzied everyone is over this card and I didn't want to spend a literal 10 days there when we are speculating it will be gone in a couple weeks. So dont take my loss of fate as an example of the costs. Think of it more like a loss of several days. also its an approximate fate value because I am distressed didnt keep good count and will properly count it later.
Edit: The island is still there, I can go back. But I am not hopeful anymore that any amount of preparation outside of 11 veils-velvets is going to be enough.
Edit 2: I'll be alright in the morning. If this post or the previous was or is inappropriate I profusely apologize. I'm in a bit of a state and not thinking clearly. edited by NiteBrite on 12/9/2013
