Who are these strange people in my lodgings? I did not invite them.

This is where the answer lies, I think.

Another suggestion: could the Write a letter to another player option be changed to a) cost zero actions and b) consume Postage Stamps? If these were distributed each week through Time the Healer up to a cap of seven or so, it would provide a convenient way of contacting other players to discuss social actions without facilitating spam.

Also, anecdata: I haven't actually received any invitations from people not on my contact list as yet. This might be because I became acquainted with half of London this past Hallowmas, or because my recent echoes have borne titles like 'send me rats or I shall menace you'.

FL is a game designed to be played socially which can be played single-player. That won't change. But we do like to make it as feasibly single-player as is practical, and we get that not everyone wants to interact.

This is an experimental feature: we'll do a second and a third pass when we get dev time next, and one of the options we're looking at is the ability to mark journals completely private, so that they won't appear on the web to anyone but their owner, and entries won't appear in Who Is Here?

If you're creating user accounts specifically designed for contact only with your main character, then - well, we generally regard this a necessary evil. We understand why people do it, and it's way more effort to track and penalise it than it's worth, especially because the players who do it are generally enthusiasts. But it's not the way the game's designed to be played, and you absolutely shouldn't be surprised as and when we make changes that make it a less desirable strategy. (I should add that we take a very dim view of anyone who uses it to gain competitive advantage against single-account players - this is one reason the Moon League is built the way it is.)

Point. I feel... mildly chastised. :s Most of my alts are just for different styles of playthroughs - I have the genius career criminal, the racially intolerant high-society woman with a silly name, the detective journalist with a bent towards conspiracy theories, the cheerful rifleman, and Nicolas Cage. My problem with the contact-my-alts thing is that people keep stabbing them, mostly. They're like my mini-mes. Not particularly fond of the stabbing. (But then again, the reason why they're in K&C goes back directly to your original point, so. Chastisement!)

Still, I'm not very fond of the idea of random people adding me on my main account. I dislike rejecting social actions, even menace requests - the other person spent an action on them, and it's rude to have that be wasted - but it gets frustrating when you're getting them from people you don't know. Ah, well. I'm a bit OCDish about my friends list.

If you really feel bad, just accept it once and send a message warning them that you're probably going to reject any further offers they send unless you actually get to know them. That way they haven't wasted an action, and they know ahead of time all further requests will just be rejected.

I echoed the "You cant sleep for hunger" storylet to test this out ans git a letter from a complete stranger which said that they hoped I'd be able to get to sleep soon in spite of the hunger. (extremely paraphrased)

Overall, good feature, ten A+s out of five thumbs up.

Ooooh, interesting. One reason I like this: it lets me re-sample content that I may have left behind long ago. Might be worth it to randomly tramp through Fallen London just to see what people have been up to in various locations.

I don't like it, or, more specifically, I don't like that we can't opt-out of appearing on it. Clearly it's something that a lot of players will enjoy and find useful, but it should be optional.

One of the things I've always liked about FL is that I can remain private and play on my own. I don't have to interact with other players overmuch. This seems to be changing, which is fine as it stands, but things like the Halloween content *forced* me to add players to my list or miss content, which was not appreciated. In that instance it worked out in my favor, and I found some players to connect to who seem lovely smile but I would have preferred there was a single-player option, even one that cost in-game currency, secrets or whatever. There are enough NPCs in the game that it's not much of a stretch to find one to interact with, surely?
Anyway, if I had the option I'd rather not be included in this little box. Sorry to be a wet blanket ♥

Oh my god. I want this so bad. Not being able to add players from within fallen london is THE WORST. Especially if their story nexus name is different from their fallen london name. Basically, this new feature is the most amazing thing!

    ... but alas, I can't use it at all due to my, um, relatively unique relationship with the sun. The sun is a massive jerk you guys, it won't let me be your friend ;~;

Well, having people adding you means more people you in turn may contact for Second Chances and things like Confessions, but if you like privacy to that degree you could just screen the relevant bits instead of Echoing them; it takes more time, but it also allow you to organize the screens for fast recovery when needed, while the Journal inevitably floods echoes with newer ones. At the moment I started Echoing only things I deem interesting for the community (with the exception of the Salon description I Echoed just yesterday only to appear on the list), for my personal reference I keep a folder with all the pictures of the storylets I want to preserve for future consultation.

Overall I think this is a good addition! I like seeing storylets that are so far buried in my journal I would probably never have read them again otherwise (like yesterday in the Forgotten Quarter I got to revisit the Numanistrix's speech and there were some interesting tidbits there that I don't think I picked up on the first time).

I do understand the anxiety about making it easy for strangers to contact you with requests for help. Perhaps a mechanism could be added to block social requests from those who are not currently contacts? Or something of that nature? If that would be too difficult to do mechanically, maybe you could add a space in the profile where people could indicate whether or not they are open to social requests and if so which type (someone said something similar earlier on this thread, but if there was a section of the profile dedicated to that it might make it more clear/visible/understandable). Then, if it becomes understood in the FL community that it is not polite to send requests without first checking the profile, that could cut down on unwanted contacts.

Again, I like this new feature overall, as I have always found the social aspects of FL to be a bit strange... for a 'social' game it is surprisingly hard to find and interact with other players (I still haven't figured out in-game messaging) so I think that this is a step in the right direction and I am looking forward to further developments! smile

I think the *placement* of the thing leaves something to be desired--it's sort of unsightly and distracting where it is.

Other than that, I suppose I'm in favor; I had and have no particular desire for such a feature, but other people seem to be enjoying it, and it's easy enough to ignore for we misanthropic types. (Or would be, if it weren't floating in the corner right next to the banner; I can't help but feel it'd be less obtrusive as part of the Messages tab, or as its own tab, or in the right-hand column with the snippets.)
