No one new's sent ME a social request yet. I am ready and prepared to be offended
Seriously, though, if someone sends you a social action and you don't want it, you can always reject it or just ignore it. They're not invasive in any sense.

FL is a game designed to be played socially which can be played single-player. That won't change. But we do like to make it as feasibly single-player as is practical, and we get that not everyone wants to interact.
This is an experimental feature: we'll do a second and a third pass when we get dev time next, and one of the options we're looking at is the ability to mark journals completely private, so that they won't appear on the web to anyone but their owner, and entries won't appear in Who Is Here?

maybe you could add a space in the profile where people could indicate whether or not they are open to social requests and if so which type... Then, if it becomes understood in the FL community that it is not polite to send requests without first checking the profile, that could cut down on unwanted contacts. This is where the answer lies, I think.
Another suggestion: could the Write a letter to another player option be changed to a) cost zero actions and b) consume Postage Stamps? If these were distributed each week through Time the Healer up to a cap of seven or so, it would provide a convenient way of contacting other players to discuss social actions without facilitating spam.
Also, anecdata: I haven't actually received any invitations from people not on my contact list as yet. This might be because I became acquainted with half of London this past Hallowmas, or because my recent echoes have borne titles like 'send me rats or I shall menace you'.

I like interacting with other people - don't get me wrong. I just don't like getting detrimental requests from other players, because I feel bad about turning them down, so I always have to accept them and then waste another action sending something to them telling them I'd rather not do so again in the future.
I suppose I could change my player description to 'please don't send me random menace requests', but then I'd have to remove the flavor text that already exists there.
Also, I've been having issues rejecting social actions anyhow. I still have a confessions request from somebody that I can neither accept nor reject; I already have trust from that person, and rejecting it takes me to the 'server guttered like a dying star' message.
I do like those future ideas! Also fond of Asami Sato's suggestion. However, the hypothetical setting where a player blocks all social requests should not extend to Knife and Candle, of course. edited by Laluzi on 11/22/2013

One of our longest-requested features is a way for players to find other players within the game. Oh my god. I want this so bad. Not being able to add players from within fallen london is THE WORST. Especially if their story nexus name is different from their fallen london name. Basically, this new feature is the most amazing thing!
... but alas, I can't use it at all due to my, um, relatively unique relationship with the sun. The sun is a massive jerk you guys, it won't let me be your friend ;~; edited by NiteBrite on 11/22/2013
