It looks like Fallen London has ditched the tentacle wrapping around the lamp (and a great deal of the copy) on the login page for a large hanging painting of the Exceptional Hat.

Thanks for the feedback! Fortunately, 'super dumb' is exactly the feel we're going for.

I just logged in and got the best bug ever. I'm playing Below in the Fallen London interface. 'Welcome to the Bellringer's Tomb, delicious friend!'

It's a shame I can't play any opportunity cards, though.

I'd submit a bug report, but I honestly don't know how it happened: I logged in through the new login page, but for some reason it directed me to http://below.storynexus.com/Gap/Load?content=%2fStorylet%2fIn# instead of http://below.storynexus.com/s. When I entered the correct URL, everything worked properly again.

I wondered if maybe I got to that login page from below.storynexus.com, but I've tried it and it shows the Storynexus login, as expected.

I am kind of annoyed that the "Sign in with Twitter" button became smaller. Since that's what I use to login. I could login with my email, but with twitter it's faster, since you don't need to type anything. You just click it and you are in. It's especially useful for mobile device, and there the new size of the button hurts even more.

And yeah, I think I'll agree that the old tentacle art is way cooler, but whatever, I can live with the hat.

I think, after Sunless Sea and its tentacled art, that maybe Failbetter got a bit self-conscious about it?

We're actually trialling a variety of front pages to see if any improve signup rates (and the old one was long due a tidy anyway). If you want the tentacle back, bookmark

YES we might make the login page smart enough to recognise you usually use twitter / add these options as player config / whatever... but that's not a priority and we only snatched a little time away from Sunless Sea dev. Consider the hack URLs above a reward for forum attendance. smile

I love the new entry page, but when I tried to sign in with twitter, it sent me off to create a new character and I can't get past that page. I'll go report it to the bug-keeper....

I did not think of it in terms of signup rates, that's silly of me. Now, that you explain, it makes sense.

Many thanks for the options. In my humble opinion:
Costermonger is super-cozy, I like that art very much.
Appalling Secret's image is now deeply associated with Mr. Eaten in my brain. In bigger resolution that art sends shivers down my spine.
Quiet Deviless is maybe my favorite character in the game, and her small in-game icon looks good (Honestly, she should be a +10 to all stats. I want more reasons to have her equipped. Also she is THAT awesome). But in bigger resolution that face goes right in to the Uncanny valley. It's a shame really.
I don't have any strong opinion about the other.

p.s. Would be interesting to know which picture is the most popular in terms of signups, if they do make a difference.
p.p.s. Speaking of pets with +10 stats. Laconic Prodigy is so OP. Life is unfair.

Have you considered linking a short 'How to play' video or demo from that signup/login screen? It just felt a bit unfriendly when the first and only thing that greeted me was the equivalence of a closed door with a peep hole, where I had to 'state my name and business' before I got to see what was behind the door. If I hadn't been researching whether or not to back Sunless Sea I would most likely just have closed the Fallen London page and never returned.

I suppose I could have gone to YouTube to watch a 'Let's play', but the one I watched was much longer than it takes to explain how the game is played. Ideally I think that a new player shouldn't even have to sign up until after escaping the prison, and that what little data defines a character at that point could be saved if the new player chooses to sign up. But that might be impossible at this stage.

Alexis, you should try a rubbery one. I know they were one of the things that initially endeared me to the game.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! We tried the first, and it didn't make any quantifiable difference - very few people actually clicked the link. We hypothesise this is because most of our users come here from recommendation. It's something we may add back now we're experimenting with advertising. We're also experimenting with this: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/?qj=5

We tried the second, and we got a higher # of signups but a much lower # of signups who ever played past the first day, so we took it out again. smile

We will keep on experimenting with different options, but we're really short of resource and we have to go for possible quick wins that we can easily get data back from.

  • Those aren't a final, or even a complete current list - we're going to try as many as we can usefully gather data for, and we'll add a rotator at some point. You might wish to hunt for the others that are currently up there...

A rotator meaning a different random image would load every time you visited the login page? Because that would be wonderful

In that case, use the old Eyeless Skull art and you'll get get three billion signups.

I spent about five minutes rummaging and I found precisely one url that gave an art and a whole bunch of ones that didn't. I think I get a C- on Secret Hunting.

I actually rather preferred the old one. Not just the tentacle thing, but the old blurb, too. It gave a better intro or hook to Fallen London, I felt. The whole 'converse with cats, seduce an artist, send rats to a dev' thing. Made it more interesting. But hey, if you're trying to shake things up, well. And I am somewhat biased towards the more serious spin on things.

Also, yes. Do a Rubbery Man and the kitten. Yay for the Appalling Secret!

I like the fancy art, but the actual background wallpaper doesn't have the same charm to it as the old one, I think. It's... old wallpaper? With a city at the bottom for some reason? A city that isn't even visible unless I zoom way out. Spooky fog is nicer looking!

Unless you have plans to turn Fallen London into an interior decorating sim, which I have no problems with, go ahead.

Broadcasting our echoes as we put them in our journals? That's a clever idea. And now I can't seem to try out any of the other login screens. They all end up as the journal screen.

Wow. That's a complete mystery to me. But it makes sense that you would've tried it.

If people get past a login screen, they feel more committed - there's some evidence to support this, and I suspect it's what happened.

Thanks all for your feedback! The general response is hugely more positive than when we switched to the fogscape / Fallen London login, which generated a tsunami of hate back in its day. But we'll experiment with a great many options, and the ultimate test will be our bounce rate.
