I have three cheerful fish and a tiny fish. Maybe they'll be friends.
The goldfish have of course been named "St Gawains Goldfish". It's only proper.

Contrast that with the fictional background usually given for presentations of the prisoner's dilemma: you both have the same information -- about a single crime in which you both participated -- and your captors can get all they need by way of information and evidence from a single party.

But nonetheless both parties in the prisoner's dilemma have the option to betray, even if two betrayals are redundant for their captors. The important thing for qualifying as a Prisoner's Dilemma is the payoff matrix more than the narrative situation.

So assuming the bazaar is +2 MW for each party and the masters are +5 for the betrayer and -5 for the betrayed, the outcomes look like...

Both betray: Net 0 MW to each
Both trust: Net 4 MW to each
One trusts, the other betrays: 7 MW to the betrayer, and -3 to the betrayed.

So betraying someone who trusts you > both trusting > both betraying > being betrayed by someone you trusted, making the situation a classic Prisoner's Dilemma.

Hi all - the front page now comes in a variety of configurations which we're A/B testing to see what works best for new signups. Those of you who miss the tentacle can bookmark this:

I imagine that player behavior becomes quite interesting once you have all of the data. I wouldn't be surprised if someone were able to publish a sociology paper with the recent Mr. Eaten content.

I think Mr. Eaten content can be summed up as follows: "It's like a sign that says Wet Paint."

I've gotten Inklings of Identity as well (about 6?), along with slightly different text. Both the regular and rare text has been echoed to my journal. Unless there's an even rarer success, there doesn't seem to be any huge payout.

Helen Damnation and all her ugly sisters! I took a gamble at 90% for Notoriety 3, and was rebuffed. Everyone who suddenly found their Confessions safely entrusted to the stones and the earth - that was my surge of energy post-failure, trying to make up lost ground.

The best part of this event, in my opinion, is that now a lot of friends are in the suddenly low stats boat with me. That should make it way way easier to farm second chances than when I first drank all that oblivion those many months ago.

My newly weakened friends, if you are looking for a friend to train and grow stronger with, then I would absolutely love some dinners, sparring matches, and even chess games. Let our powers combine, for together we are strong.

Edit: Is it weird that stat loss excites me more than candles and professions? I think all this irrigo is starting to affect my brain :v

'ello 'ello 'ello, some Impossible options have appeared for the Confessions! We can betray secrets publicly, betray POSI secrets to the Masters, or keep confidence by entrusting secrets to the Bazaar. Or, do something inadvisable involving candles. Well, rest assured, folks, I shall not be airing your dirty linen publicly unless you want me to for some reason.

Maybe mutual trust will be a good thing ar the end of the Feast of Masks.

I may stand corrected, but I think that the "revealing confessions" action will be a single one that burns out all of your "Confession" quality, giving you rewards proportional to the amount. Especially because it says in the choices "your contacts will keep trust" or "your contacts will lose their Trust in you", seemingly having effect on all the people that confessed to you simultaneously. Anyway, as a cautionary measure, try first the option you like more ^^

  • I'm reading it differently then as it says "a friend" not "your friends" which to me sounds like each option will only reward/punish one other player. I might be wrong though.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Some information people might find helpful:
    • Accepting an invitation to any of the four basic Confessions reduces the relevant Menace by 10 change points -- enough to take it from 4 to 0, This means that if you're raising Menaces on purpose, any efforts to increase them above 3 will generally be wasted.
    • Confessions is a pyramidal quality, like Watchful or Dangerous. It takes 1 change point to increase from 0 to 1, but 5 to increase from 4 to 5. All Confessions give 1 change point except for the SMEN one, which doesn't affect the quality at all.
    • You can only accept an invitation if you have the necessary Menace levels when you do so. Since accepting reduces your Menaces, you may have to raise them again before you can accept all the invitations you've received.

I'm still willing to accept invitations to confess; please direct your enquiries towards Impropriety and Whimsy, since these are the ones I can become eligible for most easily.

  • Also, can anyone tell me if there are any faster ways to increase Menaces that do not involve Seeking a certain Name? I will be truly grateful!

  • Scandal - quickest and easiest way is if someone sends you a Dupe from Attend to Matters of Society and Scandal - instant scandal 3. The person who sends the invite does not need to have any scandal.
  • Wounds - when your wounds are at 3 get someone to send you a poison a friend (the healing dupe) make sure you use it when your wounds are at 3, takes wounds to 5.
  • Suspicion - the only one I know is if you are a Scholar of the correspondence - give a public lecture.
  • Nightmares - seeking Curios and Secrets in the Foreign Quarter has some options that are likely to give nightamres
  • For both wounds and nightmares a Starveling Cat is very useful

Really ? I would be pretty mad to lose the 8-9 connections at level 100+... Losing ConnectedBig Grinocks might even make me reconsider Seeking :P

I took the candle curious first, Gawain second. Both subscribed me to living stories (reasonably certain the error message was false. 97% sure.) Time will tell to see if this leaves me candleless/with only Gawain/ beheaded/ with more goldfish.

But, I mean, as long as I don't end up Free of the Name I'll bounce back. I have a tremendous stockpile of enigmas and operate on high-speed-low-drag connections policy. Cerise may be a pain but I can probably get some willing volunteers... Destin, well, who knows!

The whole thing may just have been a tremendous goldfish prank though. I just don't know.

  • Prepare for a tide of vengeful rats to show up on your doorstep.

As for me, I'm keeping all secrets, except for betrayers.

There wouldn't have been, the SMEN confession gave no unique quality, so the game didn't track that you'd done it. There'd also have to have been a separate branch with different recipient eligibility requirements.

I have 6 and 1CP, and am pondering whether to go for 7 or start grinding notability for when the new jobs don't unlock and I lose all my notability to Time, The Healer next Tuesday.

Watching the insanity among the Seekers has turned out to be one of the best parts of the Feast.

I'd be getting my popcorn except I'm not sure if it'd be available in 1880s London . . .

A discreet word to our effervescent forumites: you may want to check the confessions options in your lodgings. The time of confessions is over. Now you need to decide what on earth you'll do with them all...

Oh ho, the options to Do Things with Confessions are live, and there's a new one too, "Bury a secret."

Hurrah - nice to know we can keep non-POSI confidences!

Hurrooh. That's considerably less confiding and/or betraying than I'd hoped to do.
