I have most assuredly accomplished a taxing feat ...

(You've changed lodgings. Your new lodgings are Premises at the Bazaar. The opportunities this address provides mean you can keep 4 Opportunity cards in your hand.)

It has been a most taxing feat, pitting myself repeatedly again a veritable sea of assassins, but I have prevailed. I believe I shall take my ease for a time and see what changes that rumors say are on their way.

I just wanted to share my good news with my fellow Fallen Londoners.

Connected: The Masters of the Bazaar has increased to 10-There may be drunken one-night stands!

You awake with an absinthe headache the size of the room your in, a massive dark, damp affair. Your displeasure is audible as you toss onto your side, your back feeling like it has been scratched like the Duchess's veterinarian. As you manage to open your eyes, you see two glowing unblinking orbs staring back at you.

"Last evening was simply magnifcous. Breakfast?"

You manage to make your excuses as you try to sneak home, trying to avoid the prying eyes of the press and bats. As you sneak into your house and into your bath to wash away the queasy feeling, you see a note on your counter. It tells you that Mr. Wines is hosting another party tonight, and Mr. Irons expects to see you there. It appears a score of Special Constables is going to escort you.

Oh dear. OH DEAR.

I have just bought Hesperidean Cider, which makes me the fifth known person to grind for it.

Tiny ASCII cheerleading squad celebrates by shaking their pom-poms:

*\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/* *\o/*

I used the Goat Farmer's Browser Extension to reserve the things listed in this thread and tell me when I'd made it:

And here's the result:

I've been playing FL since April 2010, but I also bought an Ubergoat along the way (yes, the first known Ubergoat; I'll miss it, but it's memoralized in one of my tattoos), and of course didn't settle into serious end-game grinding until fairly recently.

Thanks to An Individual for the Goat Farmer's Browser Extension, everyone here who's done the math to identify the various profitable grinds, and those who helped me decide what I absolutely positively couldn't sell.

If you'd like a sip of Cider, see this post for details.

  • Hello, sometime player, first time poster. Today I encountered An Irresistible Lady at the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, and I'd never wanted anything in this game as badly as to have her for a Companion. If it wasn't for the incomparable kindness of virtual acquaintances, actual strangers, I'd never have been able to get the Masquing necessary, and I want to thank Failbetter for fostering and attracting such a wonderful community. I started February excited that I might pick up some fantasy handsome fellow, and everything was going fine. Then my mother committed suicide on the tenth of this month. I played to escape, and demurred at social interactions and minimized my roleplay while fussing in real life over whether my mother would like this recording of Miserere or that one of Ave Maris Stella and maybe this folky version of Amazing Grace to break up the Latin played at her funeral. In return for my disengagement, I found to my surprise I was offered in-game condolences, personal stories and invitations to talk. In response I played. I sent out teeth and cats. Then I started getting Fate Gifts. When I got my first Encounter card, I scrolled down and saw the Lady's flavor-text and cried. There she was, an echo of somebody I loved, in silhouette. I asked around, traded some of my own small Fate store and got the Masquing I needed, thanks to wonderful people. Now, today, of all days, the Encounter at the Feast card came up again. Now I've got her: "M." Just like it says, I won't ask her name. My mother would have turned sixty today. She was an Irresistible Lady, and if I'd thought to introduce her, she would've loved this game. I wish all of you could've known her. Thank you so, so much.

After close to three hours of agonizing over which of my assets to liquidise and then doing so, each click a painful little stab to my heart, I am now the proud owner of a Firkin of Hesperidean Cider.

Almost a year ago, I met the Missionary again. She was neither the pale and wounded shadow bearing the damage of Nadir, nor was she the woman that she used to be before. She was something else entirely - stronger, wiser, bright as a thousand Judgements. She told me of her long journey to strange places and of her great work in rebuilding herself.

At that moment, an epiphany struck me. If she could rise again after falling so far, then so could I.

My journey is a longer one. My scars run deeper and my sins are darker. Yet I keep walking, and I do not walk alone.

One day, there will be a reckoning, but not the one everyone is expecting. Hell has no fury like a sinner Restored.

    Congratulations, dov!

Now my turn - it is official. I have the Devil's Luck.

Just a week ago, I got my soul back through One's Public. I then sold my soul for a Fabulous Diamond. What can I say? The diamond had the sun in it. I could not help myself.

I just drew One's Public for the second time today, and... got my soul back A SECOND TIME. This within just a few days of selling my soul, which in turn was within a day of getting it back, and before that, I was probably one of the first to get it back within a month of selling it.

I'd better watch my back now, the RNG is surely out to get me.

Today is the happiest day of my character's life. He got married in St. Fiacre's, reached 15 Notability, drew an unsigned message just after that, then before using it went to Cave of Nadir to say goodbye and... Got Woods in Winter two times in a row and a searing enigma from Unlikely Garden. Returned to Lodgings, used sc to rise persuasive to 200 again, get 215 and... First card drawn - Amanuensis Big Grin A happy day indeed!

On a birthday-related, particularly drunken whim, I decided to sell my character's Clipper and grind for a Yacht

On an also quite possibly drunken whim, the RNG decided to grant him said Yacht on his first try.

    Best birthday, ever.

So, it turns out that counting the sale value of everything I own, the total worth has just passed 160000 echoes (Cider money).

This, of course, includes quite a few items I have no intention of selling, either because they are hard to come by (e.g. Impossible Theorem), or are useful to me (e.g. Overgoat).

So, the Cider itself will probably still wait for a few more weeks (depending on where I decide to draw the line), but it's within reach! I'll invite everyone for a drink when I have it!

As I've mentioned in another thread, I've recently acquired a certain rare (and very expensive) Sustenance item.

It's tasty, and quite invigorating, but brings with it certain... weird dreams. (oh, and immortality :-))

If anyone wants a sip, please ask me in-game using a beneficial social action, and mention you'd like a sip (see an_ocelot's excellent guide for such actions and how such sips work).

    Cheers!

So I've gotten myself a second character, as I have a fuzzy memory of the game's beginning and wanted to go back and revisit it. I just got through seducing the Honey-sipping heiress, and as a "delightful souvenir of our time together", I received some iron manacles. Good to know what kind of relationship that was!

I got my laconic prodigy today! I closed my Salon to start an Orphanage to get it. It was such a money drain and also incredibly dependent on drawing the Tower of Eyes card. I'm now severely set back in my other quest for an overgoat, and wanted to stop several times mid-scheme. But look at those amazing stats now! +10 each to Dangerous, Shadowy and Watchful! It will also be tough to rebuild my notability (dropped from 13 to 9), so here goes the grind again!

Been grinding Making Waves as a Fixer this election, doing flash lay after flash lay. I had a plan. There appeared in my hand An Unsigned Message. I'd recently became a Conjurer, and still only had Notability 3. But this card was annoyingly uncommon, and the payment of a Crooked Cross ever so enticing. What cemented my plan waswhen the election just gave a nice way for me to grind MW. Finally I had enough notability, it was time. Even with all my persuasive boosting gear is was only a 26% chance or so to succeed. I spent a confident smile just in case. Failed. But I had one last chance.

    And now I'm a Crooked-Cross.

A little omen, a dream of blood, a magnificent feast, 3 cups of dark drop coffee, 10 tinctures of vigor, and more correspondence plaques than you can shake a stick at means I have finally achieved Courier's Footprint (Scholar of the Correspondence 21)! At long last I'm free! No more constant fear of accidentally reducing my Watchful. No more avoiding things that empty my opportunity hand. I'm going to once again stare into the irrigo light of the Nadir and then I'm getting in my Zubmarine and figuring out where I'm going when I get there.

    BEHOLD!

It would cost me EVERYTHING, but I can now afford Cider. However, if I drop my Ubergoat from the equation, this happens.

And if I drop the various articles of clothing I actually wear this happens.

I'm not sure if I'll actually end us sparing any of this stuff, but I'd like to at least save the goat (grinding another would take twice as long as saving the one I already have). The important thing is that the question is no longer "will I ever gather enough resources to afford Cider" but "what will I spare?"

A weird and personal accomplishment: after giving 30 000 souls (via the old discount) to the devils for a suite in the Brass Embassy (and I a Shepherd!), I started giving souls and contracts to the C.V.R. whenever I could, even when I had no menaces. After a half year, I have finally rescued more souls than I handed over.

This is more good news for everyone else, but I can confidently say that the Ubergoat is the highest tier of goat. I currently have two and the Overgoat card in my hand, and there are no new breeding options. A little disappointing as I was hoping for some form of Ur-Goat or Caprine Abomination, but at least I can stop wondering.

I have just been named Poet Laureate. I have acquired my Ubergoat, Cider, newspaper acclaim, and all treasures. I am recognized for my Paramount Presence, and maintain a relationship of 50+ in every form of Renown, as well as my companionship to the Widow's (224) and Duchess' (665). I have adventured in every foreign land, served as governor, been the darling of the salons, and achieved every accomplishment I know of in the Neath, along with every Exceptional Story. I am experiencing a combination of elation and fear of ennui. Alas, only the Heptagoat eludes me in all my adventures, but I am not sure I could bear such a creature. I am not sure what the future holds for dear Feldon, but I shall keep a stiff upper lip.

Not really special, I guess, but I have completed my first novel at Court, and I haven't even been playing a whole month! Do I get extra points for that?

    Recent accomplishments:

Drew A Presumptuous Opportunity three times in one day, acquiring my first Vial of Tears of the Bazaar.

Finally got the Majestic Pleasure Yacht after almost two weeks of grinding. The incidental profits were enough to buy a Devilish Fedora.

Made it far enough in the Fidgeting Writer to gain my first ever Night-Whisper.

Am up to 57 Volumes of Collated Research. This is the least remarkable thing I've done lately but I am absurdly pleased. So many volumes.

Visited Hunter's Keep on my first ever zee-voyage, and am now seeking the Stone-Tentacle Key.

And I finally, finally, finally became Stormy-Eyed!!!

It has cost me a nice sum on research supplies (plaques, implications and screams), 15 points of Notability, a mood card, nearly a hundred actions, a Magnificent Feast and a Horsehead Amulet (and many, many third degree burns. And my hair. And my eyebrows. And my eyelashes. And...), but I've finally advanced four SotC levels and I'm a level 20 Igneate Eye now.

Now the only problem is that my revolutionary-minded wife doesn't want to see me. She says that my eyes are looking too much like judgements and that worries her. Oh, well, it is not as if she will divorce me because of it...

My cider brewing activities have reached a milestone recently. I now have over 100 Coruscating Souls! Of course, I'm still way off from my goal. It's been about year since I last emptied my house of valuables to buy an Ubergoat and I now have 53,251.65 echoes towards that cider. Just 2 and a bit more years at this rate. Unless, that is, the RNG finally acknowledges my various prayers and sacrifices and grants me it's favor. Up until now my Fidgeting Writer runs have been providing at or below average returns.

My cider brewing progress has reached 75%. My current total wealth sits at 120,029.88 echoes. At my current rate, I anticipate reducing myself to a poverty stricken immortal drunk sometime next summer, but even if I don't make it I consider this an achievement. I miss goat grinding when every couple months something actually happened.

I suppose it could count as good fortune, not sure. Partly choice, partly fortune, but all in one week I've been kicked out of Court and the University, received my Foreign Office posting, discovered Flute Street and finally unearthed an Eyeless Skull and therefore entered the Cave of the Nadir. These things all just seemed to come together at the same time.

It has been quite the week. Like having Bonfire Night, Christmas, New Years and Easter all on the same day. London is going to seem a little dull for a while after this.

Despite sudden connection issues and my father calling half-way through because he needed a hand with his tractor,

A Scholar of the Correspondence has increased to 21 - Courier's Footprint!

    Two small bonuses:

    1. It's a Goatless Footprint, so the only singed hair around here is mine.
    2. I didn't end up using my A Dream of Blood card in making my run, so I was able to use it afterward and finish the job with 0 Wounds.

Edit: It's not a bad sign that this was Post #666 for me. Right? Oh, dear.

Got reeeeal lucky recently - I finally decided to finish the "Intimate with Devils" chain, after avoiding it for a year or so, and once I got to the end part - I immidiately lost my soul on the very first 80-90% luck check.
Felt reeeal spooopy for an hour or so. But fortunetly it seems RnGesus felt my pain and decided to help me out. So, once my deck of cards refreshed, I drew the "One's Public" card and as usual I took the option that gives you a bag of goodies. AND BAM! You guessed it - I got my quirky little soul back!
Hadn't felt this stupidly good/happy/euphoric/insert-possitive-and-feel-goody adjective here for a while!

A milestone has been reached in the quest for cider. If I was to sell everything I owned (and I mean everything) I could now reach 100,000 echoes. Another year and I'll be living it up. Wandering the streets. Unclothed. Cider drunk with out an echo to my name. That is, if Seeking doesn't eat me alive first.

    Well, in real life -
I just came back from the zoo, after delivering a bat my wife and I found. He (she?) had a hole in his right wing and wounds on his neck.
We chased the cats away, which was gathering around the bat (cats who really did not want to leave the scene and pass on an opportunity to catch a wounded bat). Had the good fortune to rescue a bat, hold him in a towel on the way to the zoo. Those guys are ADORABLE.
That started my weekend in a good mood.
I have minutely advanced the falling of my city.

Well, then. Amoury finally purchased that flask of M_____'s B___d. Grinding for that has been my key ambition for probably at least the past 8 months to a year. I have quite a distaste for lengthy, repetitive grinds. So I think that puts cider or any of the Goats beyond my tolerance threshold. I'm not sure what to work on next, now!

Guess I'll finish stat-capping (very, very close to being done with that as well), rebuild my Notability, and then patiently await the final Ambitions updates and top-tier profession release, however far off either of those may be. I certainly won't be leaving the game, that's for sure.

But in any case, hooray for milestone reached!

This necessitated a profession change to Correspondent, rather a lot of grinding for materials and an enormous amount of Wounds (as I advanced from level 18 to 21 in one Mood-enhanced orgy of flame-engulfed study).

This was about a week ago, but my character reached Renown 50 with Criminals, but this actually qualifies as "good fortune" more so than achievement

I reached Renown 48 without Mood cards, and I needed to trade in 3 more sets of Favours. I already had both "A dusty bookshop" and "A little omen" in my hand, and so I used one. I collected seven more Favours and held onto Criminal cards. My hand at this point was ["A little omen", "A merry little crime", "The Life of Crime", "A Visit", and "The Alleys of London: The Criminals"], with a full 10 cards and 40 actions.

Used the Mood, traded in the original seven Favours, played the four Favour cards, and then began refreshing the deck via Flash Lay. Went through a total of 160 cards, and I only managed to draw the seventh Favour on the last refresh, and so I could trade in a second set of Favours on the same Mood card and reach Renown 50 without a third Mood.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

I am now the owner of a magnificent Brass Embassy Sanctum, and have used my position to become acquainted with a Green-Eyed Devil.

    This is the picture:

I have a devil at either side as I sit upon my throne of brass, plotting Crooked-Cross plots with my Extraordinary Mind. A white serpent entwines itself about me, red eyes blinking slowly. It is entirely possible that I stroke a midnight-black cat. It is times like these that I wonder at what point I became such a sinister figure.

And then I go right back to my diabolical plotting, while sipping wine out of a chalice forged of blood and souls.

Perhaps more a celebration of the culmination of a lot of work than of good fortune, but this weekend I managed to acquire a Rumourmaster's Network to go with my Breath of the Void and Scrap of Veils-Velvet - all paid for with Scrap earned the post-nerf hard way!

Also increased Connected: Criminals to 100, which seems to have taken an inordinately long time...

I have all four of the top-tier Relicker items, bought with post-nerf Scrap.

I'd like to thank my parents for imbuing me with the necessary work ethic and tenacity to accomplish this... uh... "feat". And I'd like to use my scrap of Veils-Velvet to smother the RNG, which was no help at all.

Having finally decided to put my nose to the proverbial (and only occasionally painful) grindstone , and start doing something with my PoSI status, I've managed to achieve the following since Hallowmas: two 4 card lodgings, which i than upgraded to 5 card lodgings at sackmas, entry into the Nadir, my first capped stat (watchful) and yesterday I finally became the extraordinary mind i've always yearned to be. Not a bad way to cap 3 months of concentration. That accomplished, I now look forward to going and spending some time with the bohemians and the devils - you know, to unwind.

The RNG giveth, the RNG taketh away. After waiting most of December for the Unsigned Message, I drew it yesterday, but failed the 31% check to be promoted to Correspondent from Author. Against all expectations, I drew it again today -- and passed at 32%! First try, too, I didn't need the Second Chance. I'll miss my old Appreciation Society, but life goes on...

To close out the evening, I cashed in some chips and moved to a nice little townhouse. Considering it lacks two days of two weeks since I woke up in a gaol cell, I'm impressed with myself, anyway.

I finally got my cryptobotanical rosette. This item has proven harder to get then almost everything else, but I finally found the secret.

The trick to winning your own Rossette is to sacrifice a newborn lamb to Statisticus god of random numbers using an obsidian dagger. You must then consume the flesh of an actuary in order to imbue you with its numerical power. Expect victory within 3-5 months.

After getting plastered with half of the Christian clergy and drinking in weeks worth of irrigo from the Cave of the Nadir, I've finally received my 10th Vial of Tears of the Bazaar for my future Noman this Sacksmas. A toast to my fellow wine collectors! Just remember not to swallow the concoction, or perhaps not all shall be well...

I’ve completed the grind at court and am now a Poet-Laureate. As best I can tell this doesn’t do anything but that’s one less grind for me to worry about.

Fun fact, I had to wait for a Mood to make the last jump from 19 to 20 because I was exactly 1 point short of the 290 persuasive requirement and there was no way for me to get that last point without changing my spouse or my destiny.

Cider brewing progress has reached 90%! My current total wealth sits at 144,124.30 echoes. The current greatest contributing item pile is my 176 Coruscating Souls (55,000 echoes). The second greatest contributing item pile is 2,146,461 Nevercold Brass Slivers (21,464.61 echoes). At my current grind rate I expect to hit 100% around the end of March and to likely make the final purchase mid summer after earning enough to spare my Ubergoat and a few pieces of equipment (if I can wait that long).

So I have been hoarding Searing Enigmas for ages now, because I simply adore the idea of owning an Impossible Theorem. Having finally acquired enough, I started trying my luck with the Truthbreaker Turbine. Even with the best equipment money could buy, my odds were a dismall 31%. I burned through quite a few Sudden Insights in an effort to avoid the Boatman's grasp. Today at lunch, I was looking at the odds and thought to myself "Well, I have a horse head amulet from Sacksmas still...If I fail, it should reset the counter on necessary Insights, and I'll lose the amulet. Worth it."

    Click.

    ....SUCCESS!

I am now the proud owner of my very own Impossible Theorem. It displaced my Overgoat from my mantle, I'm so proud of it. Today, the RNGod smiled, and it was glorious.

I have reached the Heptagoat threshold! If I were to sell everything I own (except my Ubergoat), I could buy 12 Overgoats. Smoosh them into 6 Ubergoats (for a total of 7). And then smoosh all those together to make a Heptagoat. I could. But I won't. I didn't get into this nonsense for some mangy goat. I got into it for Cider. I will taste the garden! I will dream of its fauna and feel it's dirt on my finger tips! I will bask in the light of the mountain! I will... *cough* sorry. Got carried away there.

Having drained out my Notability last week to become an Extraordinary Mind (itself a celebratory event), I decided this week to rebuild my Notability. Some polite invitations got my first level quickly, and a few symposia for the cheery arachnophiles picked up my second. Then I picked up a third through 3rd-tier conversions, and at this point thought, eh, why not? I got a fourth, and then though, eh, I've got two days left, why not?

And lo, here we are. With a day to go before Time comes to visit and two free evenings remaining, I have managed to regain all five levels of Notability in a single week!

Many thanks to Professors Logan and Drake. Without their heroic efforts to eat my food, empty my cellars, and teach my orphans how to start fires, it never would've happened.

Edit for the interested: I have 16 BDR and started at Notability 4, so returning to Notability 9 required 1,970 CP of Making Waves.

I shouldn't have risked it. I spent two months waiting for those two trade secrets, and I should have waited another to improve my chances of getting a classic short story. I had a 60% chance, and clicked...
And since I'm on the good fortune thread, I can't really build suspense. I obviously succeeded. Now all I have to do it chuck it down a well in a few weeks.

You've gained 1 x Notability (new total 12 - A full half-page of Slowcake's Exceptionals is devoted to you. The illustration errs on the side of flattery. Two Parliamentarians and an Admiral mention in their own entries that they are 'aficionados' of your work. Which work exactly is not clear.).

I could have purchased two 400 echo items, or been 1/12 of the way to an Overgoat.

But instead, I got 77 sorrow-spiders. 896 echoes, all on a bunch of pets that for RP purposes are a newly-born spider council.

Some day, perhaps in a few years, I will make it 777 sorrow-spiders.

    ONE THOUSAND SPIDERS

Only 6777 more (what's that, a year and a half of dedicated grinding? Who needs some fruit drink anyways?)and then my beautiful baby tree can become a Spider-Senate!

Well, this has been a most productive week for me. I acquired a Majestic Pleasure Yacht, gathered both halves of the Screaming Map (or at least, I will have when that Astronomer shows up!), moved into rather excellent premises at the Bazaar, reclaimed my lost soul, reached Shadowy 100 as my final triple-digit attribute, bred a Corresponding Ocelot, founded a Newspaper entirely staffed by my own contacts, and finally resold my soul for an extremely shiny diamond. Oh, and hit 7 Notability, which brings my Prize Tokens up to 31 so that I am now only two N7s off getting a Waxwail Knife. And I think either this or next week is my quarter-year-versary for playing Fallen London, hurrah!

Don't think I'll quite be able to hold a candle to that list in future. Still, plenty of goals left to reach!

The last of the bits of unidentifiable metal clinked into a box of battered cardboard, one of sixty-four standing at the kerb outside the front door of the Royal Bethlehem Hotel. The manager, shaking his head over stack beyond the lobby, asked how long they would be there. "Only long enough," came the reply from the figure in the unspeakable hat.

Two libertines had to be dissuaded from proclaiming the pile of scrap to be an art installation. A constable was provided with a healthy bribe to ensure bug-hunters and burkes be kept away until the tired gray cart of the Shivering Relicker did appear. Pinnock, the towering rat, guided the ponies pulling the cart next to the pile of boxes. "She sends her regrets," said the rat, "and her thanks." The tall figure bowed and loaded the boxes, carrying one over each shoulder like a stevedore at the Docks.

At last, the cart groaned beneath the weight of the scraps, the wheels shifting slightly as the ponies shivered in their traces. Pinnock nodded and picked up a folded letter, handing it to the figure along with an earthenware jar sealed with melted copper. With a wicker, Pinnock urged the ponies forward, down the street.

As the figure headed back into the hotel, the manager looked curiously at the jar. "Sun and eye?" he asked.

"And here it is," smiled Crater, patting the jar. "I look forward to studying its echoes."

A gasp. "You're not going to actually open that, are you?"

"Of course not. But sound does carry and I shall apply a range to determine the structure of what lies within."

The manager chuckled as the jar was carried to the stairs with purpose. "Correspondents," he remarked. "Always looking for words to explain it all."

Despite having only a modified Watchful of 168 and a modified Shadowy of 123, I just finished Old Downey without failing a single challenge (damned glad, I suspect that place would eject you on a single failure, but not certain). Mind you I did use 4 volumes of research to skip one Shadowy challenge.

Still. Feels good. Between that and FINALLY getting the hang of that accursed Polythreme last week things are looking pretty nice.

Another personal one: my small Chrome extension is developing very well! Basically, that part that I wanted to add is done. Who knows, if I add more functionalities to it, I'll throw it around! Big Grin

As the Penstock's Wicket open yesterday I got my Bazaar lodgings, 2 remote, finished the promise to the Duchess and got a Soothe & Cooper Long-Box and free buckets to do as I please. I didn't know I'll be kick out of the market every time, BUT I got the Aunt card 3 times yesterday and all were success!
Today I decided to play with the "snow" and my first attempt to feed it to a monkey was success! Need to find a name for my little Dark-Carapaced Crustacean.

Aaand my alt, Clark, after never loosing his soul, on the first Visitors card he got a value of 200 (eclectic bundle)! I remember that Skinny got it back after hundreds of One's Public, many Zee voyages, hundreds Noman and Visitors cards before setting the course for N!

So I decided to get Notability 1, just for the kicks. I got the Amanuensis card in hand, but only 7 Making Waves (and I needed 15). I decided to write a gothic romance in Court to pass the time (since I would scream if I did ONE MORE CAROUSEL OF AFFAIR OF THE BOX), wrote one in two days, got an awful lot of scandal. Then came A Polite Invitation, and my scandal reached 8 short afterwards (but not before I could get my MW to 11). I went to the tomb-colonies, got another tomb-lion, reached MW 12 when I got back and, before I even considered spamming people with social actions to the remaining 3 MW, I flipped my deck and the card of God Editors was the first to fall on my hands.

Gothic Romance to pass the card's challenge for free? Checked. One action spent.
Tons of Collated Research that I collected just because what is a Professor without Collated Research? Check. Another action spent in the Bazaar Sidestreets.

I got the membership, and then I only needed MW 11 to Notability 1. A third action spent and boom! I have Notability without even trying, in a chain of random actions that all came together to make me notable in 3 actions. I love those small convergences when they happen.

Not recent, but the time where I ground up to gamble Mr Apples for his Majestic Pleasure-Yacht was my first major grind. When I finally had all the required items stockpiled, I went and clicked the button, fully expecting to have to grind my way back up again a handful of times in the future... and got the Yacht on my first try. Terribly sorry, Mr Apples, but while you can probably fight Fate, you can't fight the RNG.

I received my first Coruscating Soul through the Fidgeting Writer! Amusingly, I got it from my last 'last hope' and subsequent 'lens'. smile I waited until I had 7 Room Numbers because 7 is The Number. I probably should've waited until I had 7 Lens too, but I was feeling whimsical today.

Same here, yesterday. I didn't upgrade multiple items, however: each time I failed, I started again from the beginning. Curiously, I kept failing at the Royal Beth. In a day and a half of soul-crushing grinding, only three times did I actually succeed there; once I exchanged the Room Number for a Night-Whisper (something for the Urchins...), once I failed and once I succeeded. Then came my very first attempt with the Black Lens, which was successful, as I really hoped it would (50/50 chances), so I guess you could call that good fortune. As dispiriting as failure after failure was, it made success all the sweeter when it finally came. It was an incredible feeling.

Nice, I kept reading advice that it helps one mentally to gather a stash before attempting the next tier for Fidgeting. I wanted the Soul soon for certain exceptional story purposes, so after gathering 7 Room Numbers, I thought that was enough stashing and I just went all the way on a whim, win or lose. Turned out to be a win at the very end, like yourself! Despite the many failures you had, good job at the end! smile

That was smart of you to get the Night-Whisper, the day of the pail gathering shall commence in due time. It'll be Fallen London's equivalent of Black Friday for urchins, since Londoners can be at the ready with the Urchin card in hand the moment snow hits! Assuming it is the same last year as is reported, we'll see...

As for fortune for me today, I failed a 98% challenge. How is that good fortune one may wonder? Well, I was investigating A Philosophical Commission, side content for the Wars of Illusion, and I wanted to draw a satirical cartoon. I remembered the failure text and result is not recorded in the wiki. It was quite a long shot, but with capped Persuasive, I lowered my Persuasive with all the equipment I had (including my talkative rat), which left it at 98% success. I went for it and I failed, so now the wiki can be updated in time with that result! I don't know change point details, but the rest can be filled in. I would have been fine either way, pass or fail, but failure has that added bonus of adding new content to the wiki entry, so that was crazy to see I pulled it off. smile

Edit: Added my journal entry link to the result for the curious! Link: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Ridagoth?fromEchoId=7259327

Err... So today I got 2 Eyeless skulls and a Brass Ring by way of 20 actions spent searching for curios in the Forgotten Quarter, and I also got one more eyeless skull and brass ring using 30 actions yesterday. I also just drew the Skin of the Bazaar opportunity card in Bazaar Sidestreet, it being probably the 40th card or so I've ever drawn in that location. Heh

I also drew a mood card the other day. Time to get my SoC up to 10 and then pop a mood card and head into the Nadir

(mood card + skin of the bazaar + two skull-cards are taking up all my opportunity card slots, but who cares. I don't really have many rare cards I absolutely would wish to go for at the moment anyways)

I have been grinding the finishing school for favors and deck refreshes an absurd amount. I decided to try and get an absurd amount of credit with the headmistress and now after way to many trips through the school, I now have over 1000 Credit with the headmistress. They've advanced to the point where they have everything they need to begin searching for the Nadir except for an Eyeless Skull, and everyone knows those take forever to find. Nevertheless, I began searching for it...and ten tries later, guess what turns up?

So at one point a few months ago, I drew a mood card. Not a day later, I had accidentally discarded it.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I drew one again.

    ...And then another.

EDIT: And would you look at that, I discarded another one of them!

Well, today RNG really blessed me. I converted two Glimpses in one Corruscating Soul, my first one after more than a year of playing! Bear in mind that I dared to go in FW with only two Senses of Dejavu.

By dint of careful card juggling, some good fortune, and a measure of manoeuvring, I successfully went from my training profession last week to a Tier 2 profession (Author) this week for my professional reward.

Which is good, because I need the Stolen Kisses.

I ground out so, so many symphonies for the Correspondent profession.

But it's mine now. And not even Seeking will take that away.

(the other good thing is that the endless quantity of Moon Pearls did allow me to buy a Scuttering Squad to replace my Appreciation Society with, so that's nice too.)

That's just awesome! Until Jason murders you for it, but for now, awesome!

This is a bit late (school is hard) but I am now happily married. I also slipped enough lacre to kill an army into mr. wines' cup at the party. He survived, but I think the hangover was a little worse than usual. Still, a petty victory of my own is neat to have.

On a note that is totally not related and definitely not an extension of the previous announcement, or the fact that you can get 1 urchin favor per 5 cp organizing a wedding, I am now the proud owner of renown urchins 22, and increasing rapidly.

There is a woman on the other side of a mirror. She begged me to stop a quest, to not waste any more on the mad journey. She never realized that I had reached the end already. I knocked on the gate. I entered each key, and- one by one- I snapped each one off in a different lock. the door did not open. I did not expect it to, not in this dark fairy-land. There are truths that cannot be reached on the wrong side of a mirror.

It was the fate of the keys that mattered.

I have no more homes, now. No more orphanages, either. Well, that is... not the complete truth. I own premises at the bazaar- a new key, bought with new money. I have even upgraded them.

Someday, I will add more to the collection- abet not many more. Today is not that day. I am free of a greivous weight. Not the name, even in the pits of hunger that is as light as a feather. No, the torment of being an owner of property I do not use. I am free. No more shall the library darken my doors. No more shall I have to smile and nod in the gambling dens. I have done it, I have won!

The RNG has blessed me of late. In addition to running into “A Sign?” quite frequently on expeditions I finally finished The Last Constable storyline. Didn’t tamper with the tankards and a The Cheery Man drank the poison in the first round. Then, in the same day, made my first attempt at getting A Dark Carapaced Crustacean by feeding a Malevolent Monkey a pail of so-called-snow and succeeded at that on the first try as well.

The RNG has been kind with my card flipping. I have a very full deck with all lodgings acquired, and two slots taken up my mood cards. Yet, I managed to draw the salt weasel card within hours of camping in Ladybones. Just a week or so later, I drew the Below the Neath card and got a portfolio of souls from a rare success. (Yes I know I can make one in the Side Streets, but I don't really see the point of doing so for my collection.) This is somehow making me ridiculously happy because there are next to no other regular sources of portfolios of souls.

You go a mile from shore, well beyond the range of the Department of Menace Eradication's bounties. This is sacrament, not to be sullied. You cast the bait over the side - bait that costs significant influence to procure in such quantities - and watch the zee turn burgundy. You wait. A light blooms in the depths. It grows like a climbing sun. The waters bulge, raising you aloft. Steam rises from the waves.

The battle is brutal and quick, thank heaven. If you hadn't killed it in the first moment, it would have devoured you in the second. The midnight feast back at your lodgings is a sounder test of your resilience; like eating rubber flavoured with ink. The thing's flesh is peligin, the colour of the deep Zee, and when you are finished, so are your eyes. Your Perspicacious Lurcher looks into them, whines, and flees. You never see it again.

So be it. You have a new companion now. You slide your hand along its white haft, feeling the grain of the bone. It shivers for you, eager.

I hit 200 Persuasive (due to a prolonged affair at the House of Chimes with an alt. Implications: unpleasant; I shall rationalise it RP-wise by saying that we merely spoke to each other in quite a cordial, business-like fashion for a very long time. Which did wonders for my confidence. Yes.)!

And then I stupidly clicked on the Nadir while I had 0 undrawn cards in my deck, and while I was in the midst of an RP. Am now waiting. Painfully. Sorry Andrew. =/

My character got from Scholar of the Correspondence 16 to 18 in one fell swoop on Monday, and without dying. I'm very pleased! Even if now the overgoat grind continues, in advance of whenever it's time to try for SotC 19.

(I haven't done anything else of note lately, precisely because I've been saving for that goshdarn goat.)

I finished the Heart's Desire Ambition storylet on Sestina! Oddly enough, I am pleased not so much because I have completed the story (or the parts that have been written so far), but rather because I got rid of the Heart's Desire option that was hanging around everywhere...

I have, after many years of pursuit, reached the current end of the Ambition: Nemesis storyline, and I must say, one of the bits of writing toward the end was so elegant that it gave me chills.

    "It began with a murder..."

A wonderful and precise evocation of the anger that has driven the character this far.

On my very first trip to the Nadir, I have gotten myself a Frost-Moth, both the Strange-Shore Suit and Frock, an Uncanny Incunabulum and a Nodule of Pulsating Amber.
Not bad, I believe - yet definitely evened out by my second trip a day afterwards, when I got a bit of Watchful, Walking the Fallen Cities, Magnanimous and NOTHING else. Of course, this comes from deciding not to use the Wiki and try and find out all card results by myself ...

What a great 24 hours - I managed to both get my Bifurcated Owl, and win my first Cryptobotanical Rosette (rather unexpectedly, since I was mostly challenged by others, apart from this last victory). Now, to take a deep breath and continue towards the Ubergoat.
I have to say that Rosette is rather ugly, though - I suspect it will only last a couple of days on my mantelpiece, then to be clawed down again by the Owl.

I recently decided that Kasha Cairn would be better off with a nicer ship, so - against my better judgement - I decided to give up the old Tramp Steamer and go for the Majestic Pleasure Yacht. I used my pull with the Masters to get a seat at the game table, stocked up a bit on a few of the items I didn't quite have enough of, and went to play.

And won, on the first game. What.

Hah! Soran finally has an Impossible Theorem!

I mean, sure, they might have gotten slightly blown up a couple of times in the process, and had to chug a few gallons of drugs while being pieced back together by Zero and Cairn so they could stumble home (at the top of a Bazaar Spire-Emporium) to sleep it off, but that's just the price of SCIENCE.

Plus now this means I can stop grinding up those Uncanny Incunabula and start using them the way they were meant to; as lovely gifts for Mr. Pages. smile

Oh, and I guess Zero has a Zubmarine now. I think he mostly built it because he thought it would be funny.

Once, I had capped stats, and I was quite proud of the slow, wandering path I'd taken to them. The next day, before posting of my small but joyous achievement, I took the candle of St. Arthur for my own. Goodbye capped stats, see you in twenty levels or so...
I have finally clawed my way back to capped stats after two of them were Eaten in service to a Candle... I write this as soon as I have done so, to ensure that my victory is not snatched from me again.

Finally, after far too long grinding, I have finally managed to trade in 3200 scraps to the Shivering Relicker to get my hands upon a Breath of the Void. It doesn't actually do anything right now, but I feel accomplished to get one after eyeing up the 3200 scrap options for years now. Next up, either a second master's blood to replace my old one, or to finally get myself an overgoat.

I am one more point of Notability away from being a Paramount Presence, and two points away from being a/the Poet Laureate. I suppose I must someday get my Scholar of the Correspondence rating up to snuff, but otherwise I think the next thing to do is finally cash in my candles for cider. I've been holding off because my character has tried to keep dying to a bare minimum and has never once lost his soul, and cider just hasn't seemed like his bag.

You didn't sell your Cider for it, correct?

That's correct. The cider is very much still in my collection.

I've managed to obtain the heptagoat now, which I think makes me the first person to have both heptagoat and cider at the same time.

Wow, That’s really impressive Individual! I’m pretty jazzed myself- Friday night I FINALLY got my mood card. Which meant that, this morning, after gathering the materials, raiding the couch cushions and my laundry pockets to fund fate purchases, and petting my Ubergoat, I finally did it- I reached Scholar of the Correspondence 21- Courier’s Footprint!

What really makes me happy about this is I managed it without being an Extraordinary Mind- I’m actually a shadowy specialization primarily. The mood added a particular level of drama, as last minute internet issues and miscalculating the amount of Aeolean Screams almost put the kibosh on the whole project. This is really the last BIG grind I was waiting to finish. The connections are fine, but AFAIK Criminals because its broad cap is 7*renown the highest possible grindable level is currently 44 (200+54 from items + 15 from Invisible Eminence 269, 270 is 45 renown). I imagine I will hit a similar barrier with Renown- The Docks, Rubberies, and Tomb-Colonies eventually. I could theoretically get beyond this with a mood card. But given there's absolutely no way to grind favors reliably within the timeframe of an hour, I'd be limited to one per mood card, which is a pretty long, painful process.

Which is a shame, because I had once been at the title cap for connections before the rework, and I hope to someday to be able reach that level again. For now, that just leaves hopping on the Cider train and waiting for more scraps. I still need 3/4 3200 scrap items. I should also probably go to jail to meet a certain someone. But I’ve slain my most coveted end-game grind dragon. The RNG has finally granted me victory.

At long last! The Bazaar and others have finally acknowledged Helen as what she is: A Person of Legendary Charisma.

It took spending over 400 Echoes, 50 Actions, a lot of coffee, and then some but she is now noted for her charm, her wit, her skills in the bedroom.

After winning my Majestic Pleasure Yacht a little over a week ago, I now have finally earned enough to add another "optional" luxury transportation: I have finally purchased a Respectable Landau!
Edit: And the next day, I got another (as in 2) Ratwork Watch from robbing the Drunken Rat, so that's an additional 230 echoes also! (And considering the costs to get those bribes and hidden bodies books to offset the grind time for the transportation items above, it's nice to be so quickly reimbursed and be back in profit!)

My main character is on the Seeking Road. After two weeks of grinding, I finally accumulated 924 Mourning Candles, about 2000 Appalling Secrets, and a Rare Mood card. The Rare Mood, and timing my actions around Time the Healer's arrival, allowed me to gain 5 levels of SMEN in one fell swoop -- the Candles sent up a victorious blaze (see that charred block of buildings near Spite?), half the Secrets went down deliciously (unfortunately the other half were just a sodden waste of wine), I used Marsh-Mired right before and right after Time the Healer reset, and Grieved. To top it off, I rode out the Rare Mood at the University and acquired some Searing Enigmas -- seven of them, in fact.

All in all, it paid off. I'm beyond thankful that all those Candles succeeded -- that was my last chance to see the storylet text for myself before the challenge exceeded my Watchful ability. Although it would've been a magnificent sacrifice worthy of the Seeking Road if they hadn't. I'm now at SMEN level 17; all challenges are past my Watchful ability, so I'll have to just bide my time to raise SMEN with Marsh-Mired now.

Despite a few mistakes with Pails of Snow early on, I still gained enough Taste of Lacre to upgrade two 5-card lodgings and get a Remote Address. Hooray!

Unfortunately I was too late to get a Fur Robe (having exclusively gotten Pails of Snow) but it's still a satisfying Neathmas.

My dear companion Inigo Montoya approached me requesting to take on a job that was almost certain to be the end of him. It was a 100% chance of success, but the option came with the warning that even as a success, it was probably a suicide mission. After struggling to make a decision for over 36 hours, I finally let him go because he was the one asking despite knowing well what he was signing up for. He has come back to me, not just alive and well, but in glory! (His name is more apt than I imagined when I first gave it to him.)

After obtaining the Knock, I read this and nearly cried with joy.

Today was a big day for my character. She took a trip to Mutton Island, made two strange catches and learnt of her destiny: that she would successfully save her second husband when the Liberation of Night came upon the Bazaar.

I have finally reached the status of the Extraordinary Mind after selling my Noman's Elemental Secret to get me the equipment I need. Once I'm finished with the majority of seeking, I can start working on capping my stats and getting an Overgoat to max SotC.

I got to the end of Ambition: Enigma and the Eggshell Painted in Black...on my alt at least. I've tried it with my main account and I have evidence that it should have worked, but it doesn't seem to given me the quality and the item. I've messaged Failbetter about it and should be hearing about them soon.

I needed a lot of help in order to get started, but I was able to get the Eggshell and Ambition: Enigma up to 2 mostly by myself.

Just finished my last ride on the "Affair of the Box" carousel! Not only do I now have base 200 shadowy I got enough mourning candles to start my first "Court of the Wakeful Eye" run with 800 tribute!

Faced with a recorded range of 2->821 Cryptic Clues on a Bundle which only has a ~1.5% drop rate, I've beaten the odds and discovered a uniquely poor harvest. In the tradition of Victorian Explorers before me, I'm calling this Discovery "The Elderfleur Clue".

The RNG was very good to me recently: went to the Cave of the Nadir, got the Irrigo Goggles and then *two* End of Battles. That was my entire trip--3 straight successes, and one of the few new items I could get, for 8 Irrigo. I'll take that!

And then, after at least two weeks of drawing cards only in Ladybones Road, I got a salt-weasel!

I may be paying for my run of good luck now with my inability to draw the Bohemians card so I can change my profession to journalist. I've drawn every other Faction card at least once, some 3-4 times. But then all hail the mighty RNG. All hail. All hail.

Your achievement is currently besmirched by photobucket's demands of upgrade. It is a most terrible image host and no one can see the picture.

Congrats to all! I'm a newly minted PoSI! I've been progressing along the Dueling the Black Ribbon and have a three-card lodging.
I also was lucky enough to collect an absolute killer two-card combo: the one you get with Seeking the Meaning of the Flint Idol 4, which reduces all your wounds...and a Mood card.

Hit the Mood card for Dangerous, racked up the necessary Duel with Feducci to 90% chance of success, hit the Flint Idol card, and...BAM.

I got ridiculously lucky but I'm a bit pleased with myself nonetheless.

I decided to pick my alt back up again today as I had not played with it since before the last feast of the roses.

I haven't played in months and literally my first card draw had "A Dusty Bookshop"

Granted I have not junk cards on my main like "The Solitary Glim-Sculptor" but why can't I get this lucky on my main?!

Lukeskylicker will soon embrace the storm!

(I just got 'A dream about the mist' after nearly two months of pulling cards. I love the WtTS dreams and I'm looking forward to... a new perspective.)

After about 4 months and a 79% chance, I've finally finished creating a Classic Short Story! Oh, the things that would have happened if I failed...at least I have something to throw down the well now.

For my first Neathmas, I was just able to get the Dark-Carapaced Crustacean from the two pails of snow that I had saved up. I'm going out to Bulbone Island to grind for more Storm Threnodies so that I can get at least one more pail of snow, but I at least have something for my efforts as of now.

I played The Kinks' Sunny Afternoon and and did my first bet for the Yacht as soon as the word came up in the song. Yours! Poor Mr Apples up and left at this audacious display of luck.

After months of grinding and pleasure, I finally made enough Romantic Notions to purchase a Key to a Handsome Townhouse. Here's to the Feast of the Rose and all the honey-mazed rakes in Veilgarden.

I finally made it to the Cave of the Nadir. Nearly lost to February, but I managed to chase her off and finish the expedition with 12 spare supplies out of the 80 I started with.

Probably a more minor achievement, but after 6-7 months of grinding I finally got that Vial of Master's Blood.
