Cynically, arrogantly and hypocritically: 1. Join the community. You will benefit both from making acquaintances and by reading through the treasure trove of lore, plot speculations and other less describable topics. Also make use of
spoiler tags
. 2. Do not read wiki (purposefully with a link). It contains spoilers. 3. Do not get jailed again. Unless you really want to. But why would you? 4. Don't be greedy, whether about hoarding stuff, raising stats or progressing through the story. It will bring you no end of good. And please do not make topics "How do I get rich ASAP". It's unbecoming. 5. Lead your journal from day one. It'll become quite an amusing reading in half a year or so. 6. Consider becoming exceptional friend. Though you will most likely enjoy it more once you've become PoSI, as you will generally have a bit less things to do. 7. Don't do RP and try not to care about any advice you may get (yes, I know it looks like an utterly idiotic thing to advice). Try to immerse yourself as you are, make your choices and enjoy (or not) the consequences.

So can the two people living above a bookshop expect an answer? Or was posting in an old thread a fatal error?

The room above a bookshop's card isn't as good as some of the other lodgings as it just gives one scrap and doesn't have another option (unless you take a certain path in a Fate-locked story and you can get the items that option gives in greater quantities elsewhere) so some people belive that as it adds a "worthless" card to your deck you are better off not buying it in the first place.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.
No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Thank you. That is rather more helpful than at least one reply upthread.I'm not sure anyone wants to hear "delete your account, you did it all wrong".

And the usability of such cards is, as always, subjective. I, for one, am playing all the lodgings cards for scraps (even the ones which give only 1 scrap per action).

Want a sip of Hesperidean Cider? Send me a request in-game. Here's an_ocelot's guide how. (Most social actions are welcome. Please no requests to Loiter Suspiciously and no investigations of the Affluent Photographer)

@Jermaine: The poster who advised deleting your account was being facetious. But you might interpret that advice as "don't take things too seriously." FL is a treasure-trove for min/maxers and numbers crunchers, if that amuses one; however for those who just want to have fun, sweating the details can undermine the enjoyment. There is a good deal of more recent advice in the Young Turks thread, you may want to check that out.

1. Join the community. The forums are the best place to start. 2. Ask questions freely in whichever community venue out at which you choose to chill. 3. Consider spending money on the game; even at low levels, the Blemmigan Affair, the Trade in Souls, and Exceptional Friendship are all wonderful uses of your dosh which will remain beneficial far into the game. And you get warm fuzzies from keeping an independent game studio in business. 4. Use your journal. You won't get to experience a lot of those early-game stories again, and the echoes will make for a wonderful trot down memory lane. 5. Don't mind your menaces. All of them are worth succumbing to at least once. Except Unaccountably Peckish. 6. When the game tells you that something is a Bad Idea in large, bolded, italicized, friendly letters, you should believe it. 7. Read widely and carefully.

I'm going to suggest that we unpin it and let it slide away into oblivion, and instead have a Small Questions thread that is replaced frequently. Something like this is doing well on the r/fallenlondon subreddit. Isn't the Young Turks Club kind of serving as a pretty successful version of that?

The Young Turks Club are delightful. But their thread is already 36 pages long and dates from October. Also, small questions aren't necessarily from new players.
