I was going to ask this here, and then I wasn't, and now I am. A few months ago, I doodled out a knitting pattern with Scarlet Stockings of Dubious Origins in mind. They'll sort of be keeping with my EBZ mitts, upon which I have knit the Echo sign on the palms because I'm easily amused that way.* I think I've found the perfect yarn, which is absolutely scandalous in its scarletness, but it has a slight tonal quality which plays with the depth of the red. If there are any knitters here, or if you simply have an opinion on the wearing of stockings, here's my quandary: I'm torn between knitting a vividly violet froth of ruffle at the top that will drape over garters (or if I slouch them a bit, over the tops of my boots) or keeping the ruffle separate and confined to the garters themselves. They're equal in their respective pros and cons as far as I'm concerned and there's no real deal-breaker for me. As such, I'm curious about what people who know what the SSoDO are think, re: this ever-so-important matter of ruffles on stockings vs. garters.
Oh, and I know the Stockings aren't actually characters and thus possibly this is not the right sub-forum, but it seemed an equal stretch to take this to the fanfic sub-forum. Feel free to kill this if I've chosen incorrectly.
*Also, knitting a Correspondence symbol on them seemed likely to invite my hands to burst into flames.Edited to mention these aren't fancy dress. I'll be wearing them for whatever: work, errands, instigating outbreaks of pearl-clutching. The usual. edited by Miss Strangeweather on 9/5/2013

Personally, I'd love to see a pair, and possibly buy them if they are reasonable and I can afford it.

Oh, hilarious thing I just noticed in the description of the yarn: 'This tonal spectrum shows of seven shades of any of your favorite colors.' Serendipity? No: FATE.

Well, I don't mind posting a picture when they're done or even far enough along to be identifiable as a stocking-based knitted object. I don't consider myself anywhere near sales-quality with these since I don't even have the wicked red yarn to swatch yet, to make sure what I have in mind will actually happen when I knit with it. The one detail that I will save for another project if it doesn't work with this yarn is, in lieu of a backseam, to have a strip of fine fishnet or other lace running alone the back of the sock. I think that would be cute and it's not something I've seen done in other patterns.
But. Back to the ruffle: stocking top or confined to the garter? I've squinted at that image we have of the original Scarlet Stockings about all I can squint, I'm afraid.

Looking at the image, the tops are perfect, in a way that they would not be with a separate garter, considering the individual legs and stockings in question. This to me says stocking top. Besides, these are fakes, cheap knockoffs (the subject material, not your project!), and not the real scarlet stockings, where a garter would be more appropriate.

Thanks for the input. Probably the most delightful revision I've come up with for these is, in lieu of a bow over the little lacy strip of backseam, using this a version of this little guy: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-bat
I sense many a prolonged stay in the Tomb Colonies in my future.

I'm glad you folks like the little bat, too. I have to finish the peacock shawl I'm working on before I tackle my stockings, but those will likely be the next project. I am so cursedly knock-kneed that if I don't wear thigh-high or over-the-knee socks, the socks just underscore the fact that if I stand with my legs together, from the waist down, I look like an inverted letter Y. That's the other reason I wanted to get the tops/garters thing sorted: the whole point is to draw the eyes up and away from my knees. (I've surely picked up at least +2 Scandal for admitting this.)
