I see I wasn't the only one googling "Goethe goat" today!

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, novelist, playwright, statesman and scientist. Ever hear of Faust and Mephistopheles from German folk legends? Faust, the man who sold his soul to a devil for power and knowledge? Mephistopheles, the demon? He wrote fanfiction about them. :P This guy:
http://www.answers.com/topic/johann-wolfgang-von-goethe

"Über" is German for "over" or "beyond", but it's commonly used in English to mean "super, ultimate, really/very, best" yada yada. This is surely the pinnacle of the goat breeder's art! ...Or Alexis simply saying he likes Goethe's written work and stuff like "Overgoat MK II" or "Supergoat" would have been silly.

Let's get to Goethe's goats (basically the same stuff as Spacemarine9 because obsessive minds link alike):

A) This is the goat which Mephistopheles desired to bestride.
http://www.classicreader.com/book/1772/9/
More demon goats are mentioned as you read down. (Fallen London Trivia: The Ignis Fatuus/Will-O-Wisp portions inspired parts of The Fire Sermon dreams. It's not all references to T.S. Eliot and The Waste Land, guys! But that is 90% of your recurring dreams, yes.)

B) This is the goat which was not very good at guarding a fig tree from a beetle. Seriously!
http://www.everypoet.com/archive/poetry/goethe/goethe_explanation_of_an_antique_gem.htm
Please note that this is a parable and Goethe wasn't just fooling around with his publishing company. ...Then again, who's to know?

Actually, maybe they're referring to the same goat. Goethe and his love of goats! There we have it. Goats.

If we go strongly with the Goethe thing, we should take our Overgoats to a Prince of Hell and have it upgraded to an Übergoat by selling our souls. More likely than not, we just need 2 Overgoats and a romantic, candlelit roll in the hay. Not us -- the goats!

Alexis Kennedy wrote:
"oh Lor', I don't want to spark another bout of desperate theorising. I've changed my descrip, and I can assure you there are no access codes, underhand methods, social actions, briberies or anything else. Goethe's goat is available through extant content, although the branch admittedly has pretty exacting requirements."

"Ladies, gentlemen, others, you're a clever bunch and this one's probably the first answer that comes to mind. If you wanted to manufacture an improved goat, where would you start?

...there you go."

"Clap your hands three times and believe in hidden branches."

W-ell I can't exactly discount the possibility, but the wording of the post (which is... literally all we have to go on, really) said manufacture. You don't really manufacture things in the Nadir so much as refine them.

Besides, if it was related to the Nadir I think it'd be called Irrigoat. There's no way you could avoid an obvious pun like that, it'd be one hell of a missed opportunity.

My, that's some memory! On a related but different matter, why have the descriptions of cards on the wiki been cut short? I understand the need to avoid spoilers and to not provide a substitute for direct gaming, but there's a whole score of storylets that I played that I don't remember at all, and I have no way to retrieve - I made screens of some, but I can't keep backup of every storyline, it would become a chore more than a game T.T

Y'all are driving me loco. XD You're actually making me doubt that 1 + 1 = 2. Other than the fact that Alexis has stated that the solution was posted in the first 2 pages, by the above quotes alone, I'm already convinced that we need a couple of Overgoats. A pair. Romance. Mint-scented hay. Rolls in said hay. At this point, I would honestly be aghast if it wasn't a pair of goats getting shaggy. I fully understand that this notion can be a terrible thing to believe (I cherish my mountain of Echoes, too!) but it has gotten difficult to believe any other suggestions.

In case anyone's wondering, the wikia admins sent Alexis emails and we've received his response. No limbs were lost during the conversation, and none of you should fret. Please remember at all times that we're vested in mutual interest to let the player base enjoy the game and the surrounding community as much as possible. I would really like to answer specific questions in depth, but I am extremely tired now and ready to keel over from a lack of sleep at any moment. Unlike Alexis, I shall not be overdosing on Redbull today just to stay with you madmen. wink

U-Umlauts are the most metal letter (as proved in literary masterwork/video game Brütal Legend). The usage of the mechanical-sounding word "Manufacture" when describing how to make an Übergoat as opposed to something more organic like "breed" or "raise" is significant taken in this context, as it implies that the Übergoat has metallic or possibly even robotic origins.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go put on my tinfoil top hat

Really though, the answer is apparently somewhere in the first two pages of this thread before it went off the rails and turned into a discussion about the wiki and creative rights and such. Which makes it seem really likely that it's just a matter of two goats.
I wanted an epic goat adventure across the entire Neath, just a man/woman/other and their goat on the journey of a lifetime! upset

Either that or Alexis is going to give goats to anyone who pledges more than £50 in a desperate ploy to raise the total end funding from one hundred thousand to seven million pounds.

Pledge £3000 to Sunless Sea, get a free goat! A real one! In real life! It comes with a QR code on the side that lets you get a Goat in FL.

...It turns out googling illuminati goat payed off...
Edit: Hepta means seven, the heptagoat is a demon goat, the baphomet has 8 letters, baphomet is also a demon goat, heptagoat has 9 letters. There are 3 demon goats in London, the triangles have 3 sides the difference of letters between heptagoat and baphomet is 1, the illuminati has 3 sides and 1 eye, Heptagoat is Illminatii!

The only issue is that the goat, being a goat (and an Overgoat at that), will probably eat just about anything if you leave it unattended. Including the fox, your boat and you.

    O drama!

Tommy, no sin here beyond tactlessness. SFB, they worked fine for players, but they represented an ongoing serious risk for us that we were going to have to tackle eventually.

I don't want to close the wiki(s) down. My ideal state for the wikis is a reference guide that uses illustrative quotes and summaries in all cases, not substantial copy/paste. However there is a huge quantity of text in there already and all the wiki editors are volunteers, so getting there from here is not straightforward and will involve some compromise.

I'm sure if we can talk to some active wiki community types, we can sort something out, but we do now need to sort something out. It will have to wait until after tomorrow, though. smile

And yeah, please don't remove that text. Without the wiki I would forget most of the storylines. I would forget all the beautiful words. T_T
I mean surely there must be some way active and paying customers can be granted the right to reread the text of your work, without that hurting your company. The journal system simply does not work. And improving it would be a waste of precious time, when a legion of volunteers does the job better than any log system ever could.

I agree on anything. Also, I think wikis improve the spirit of collaboration between players, working together to make a whole of the puzzle of information Fallen London provides.

This is the last post I'll make on the topic until I've talked to the editors at the Fallen London wikia community (and I won't have time to pursue that until the KS is well and truly launched).

    --

    >Can't you grant the right for that particular wiki

We probably can't, even if we wanted to, which we definitely don't. 'The wiki' isn't a legal entity: we'd be granting rights to individuals who we don't know personally or professionally and who as volunteers aren't accountable. And in any case companies that make their living writing content don't hand the rights to their content to their customers, for obvious reasons.

I want to make one thing clear: we're bending over backwards to be good to our community by even having this conversation. I am a Breaking Bad and Mass Effect fan, and both of those are big complex franchises with elaborate back-stories. It would be very convenient for me and for other fans if the BB and ME wikis included line-by-line copy and paste of the scripts. They don't, they never will, and I would be laughed off their parent company forums, if not banned, for proposing it.

I understand that there are benefits to reference wikis, and that your play experience would suffer without them. We have always worked hard to be good to our players, and this is why the wikis exist at all (since all wiki hosting companies have takedown policies). But it's important for you to understand that this is our livelihood and the future of our company - not to mention four years of my own personal creative effort - that we're talking about here, and that trumps everything.

The trouble with this suggestion is that, as has been said elsewhere, Failbetter don't have spare resources just now.

Another vote for leaving things to Alexis and the Wiki editors; they're all reasonable, smart people, and I'm sure they'll find the best practicable solution, without input from us. I suggest we go tell our friends about Sunless Sea instead.

The suggestions seem to be: Fourth Coil of the Labyrinth; something on the opportunity card; something in Wild Words? I can't for the life of me remember how you use the Formula for whatsit, though--possibly it's not usable anymore, after concluding that storyline?

I don't think an item will modify your stat unless you have it equipped. I mean, the option might unlock at Caprine Authority 1 and 2 Overgoats, but it's not going to unlock at Caprine Authority 2, because then the only way to unlock it would be to equip two goats. Which is physically impossible, as you can only take one animal or human being with you at all times, spouses being the exception

so you'd have to... marry a goat????

I don't actually remember how long I ground for my first Overgoat, but I am reasonably sure that it was back before the Affair of the Box (which I actually find a very pleasant grind), so it took even longer . . . back in the days where we walked uphill, both ways, and there wasn't even any lacre to make things look nice . . .

My, that's some memory! On a related but different matter, why have the descriptions of cards on the wiki been cut short?

  • Because of our requirement:

http://www.failbettergames.com/?page_id=594 : "We do not give permission to quote our content in large chunks, in a wiki or elsewhere. Reproduction of Failbetter-copyrighted content – in wikis or elsewhere – must be limited to illustrative or particularly important quotes, and summaries or synopses of storylines. Cataloguing outcomes is fine. Copying and pasting most of the game is not."

We know that some players like to be able to refer to all the game text, but aside from any other considerations, we've been advised that allowing our content to be freely reproduced on the web may jeopardise our ability to claim copyright. This would potentially destroy Failbetter, so we can't allow it: end of story.

The snipped content on the wikia wiki is a bit chancy, especially since it's still there in the underlying database, but it's an acceptable compromise for now, and we thank the wiki admins for being proactive about it.

    The Overgoat's bleating opinions:

    bbbbbRRRRRAAARRRRGH!
    You've gained 1 x Aeolian Scream

    Grraaaghhhh?
    You've gained 5 x Maniac's Prayers

When you task it to climb the spires of the Bazaar, it brings back either a Storm-Threnody or an Aeolian Scream.

It's a creature of Wild Words... "You must placate it with straw and minted spore-toffee immediately." ...Who likes minted spore-toffee! Quick, go to Mrs Plenty's Carnival and investigate the spore-toffee stall!

No, but seriously, let's continue with the Wild Words. Would feeding it a diet of incredible Wild Words increase its stamina and mind? Like we fed our Ravens with Mysteries and Rumours? Maybe the Overgoat would appreciate some Night-Whispers, Starstone Demarks, or even a Breath of the Void.

There are rituals of wild words and wind that occur in the high places. The Urchins in the Flit know. The Mind of a Long-Dead God might also reveal something, though that's really out of the way! The Labyrinth of Tigers seems much more likely than the other two to hide the über option.

Don't know how it is hidden but if you highlight Alexis' message there is something else there.
Not sure if it makes anything any clearer though.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

I'll verify as soon as I get an Overgoat card... As it's always the case, as soon as you start waiting for a card, it disappears (Should we call it Kennedy's Law? XD)

The übergoat is a goat which has found its sea legs. It is the Goat of the Seas.

Would it be too simple and obviously obvious if the hidden story branch was located on the Overgoat opportunity card? :X

Alexisthetest is a test account in general. Mostly for k&c stuff.
I know this because I have been stabbed by it a non-trivial amount of times.
It's had that medal for ages. Also you don't... really upgrade things, besides medals. The Overgoat is not a medal.
Well it's a medal of affluence and avarice, maybe, but it's not an actual metal medal.

I checked out the Fourth Coil. An Overgoat, Empyrean Redolence, and one of every other pet obtainable via Theological Husbandry didn't unlock any options I hadn't seen before.

A Prince of Hell and a sold soul you say? Both are things that exist in fallen London. Maybe you need the high scraps Prince of Hell address. Then theres the servant of Hell Prince you meet in spite, it was rolled out around the same time as the Rob a drunk thing. Follow the clues. Find ye a Hell Prince.

I can't do scraps things for a while, bottled oblivioned my stats to 0 and list all my lodgings (and lost my salon). But maybe someone with a goat, the address, and access to the spite story could find out.

Or it could just be an /a/ccess code :v

I can assure you there are no access codes, underhand methods, social actions, briberies or anything else. Goethe's goat is available through extant content, although the branch admittedly has pretty exacting requirements.

That's just what he wants you to think. Clearly it is all of the above and more. Ambition enigma 7 goat sacrifice and all that haha.
