Need a hand adding a new friend...

Hi everyone. I'm trying to add a new friend on Echo Bazaar but I'm having some trouble. I'm connected through Twitter and Facebook - when I joined, you had to use a social network to connect. Now that appears to have changed. My new friend says she signed up just using her email address, and she gave me her username. I tried to add her username as a contact, and she appears in my contacts list - except when I want to do social actions. Her name is not there. She says she hasn't received any kind of notification that someone wants to add her as a friend.
What are we missing here? It can't be complicated to add friends, as it's a critical part of the game... Yet we can't seem to figure it out.

Firstly, she shouldn't get a notification. In Fallen London, you can become friends by anyone without their consent. She will automatically add you if you send a social action, however.
If she's not in London, she might not be able to attend the invitation.
An alternate path would be her sending you a social action, in case something has gone wrong and you've added a double of hers or such.

So it could be simply that she's still in prison as a newcomer, and when she finishes, I'll be able to interact with her?

I think so. I haven't actually tried sending friend invites to people in the newcomer-prison. But since most locations outside London are blocked, I assume so.
