Marriage to players? Messages in this topic - RSS

I'm not sure if this topic has been brought up before, but man, wouldn't it be great if players marrying players was an option? A lot of people do RP as their characters, and I feel like having that as a possible option would be fantastic. How do you suppose the mechanics of that would work if it were ever a thing? Could it ever be a thing? Let's discuss!

Heck of an idea! I'm immediately imagining a social action that gives each player a Spouse item with the cameo of their partner - though that would require creating 48 separate Spouse items. If one's Player-Spouse were to give a stat bonus tailored to the partner's own stats (for instance,) then that's 192 combinations of cameo and stat. If we include Respectable/Dreaded/Bizarre, or for multiple stat boosts... well, perhaps this isn't the most profitable line of hypothesis.

True, that is an option, but unfortunately, it's rather limited in terms of choices of gender. Maybe to circumvent the massive amounts of stat combinations (and to avoid min-maxing), maybe a player spouse would provide unique social actions and/or an opportunity card rather than a stat boost? I can't think of a way to fix the cameo issue, though...

I had mentioned it in a post of mine not too long ago, but it was burried in with complaining about the mechanics of the game, so it may have been missed.

That's likely because there's no particular benefit to having it that high, beyond personal satisfaction smile

I'd love to have a proper option to marry another player's character - the method we've used is a little awkward, and certainly won't work for everyone. But unless it was purely cosmetic, how would you determine what benefits one ought to get?

Well, considering that most players tend to level up all stats sooner or later, a flat +1 to everything (base stats, plus possibly Respectable?) could be in order ^^

This is a good idea, for those of us who want it. Could we marry Clay characters, too?

(...Yes, I am still holding out for a Clay companion. *sigh~*)

I really like this idea! I'd suggest that, like ZachOak said, there wouldn't be a stat boost, but just unique cards with your spouse. As for the cameos, it could just be something to represent their gender, like a top hat or bonnet.

I think clay characters have stopped being a thing, sadly. At the very least, there's no option to create new ones. But a clay spouse would be awesometastic.

Honestly, even just a ring or a rose would be pretty easy to work with, since it avoids assigning any flat gender roles to players.

Odd that we here are concerned about assigning gender roles to characters that exist in electronica when IRL assigning gender roles seems to be the government's sole occupation, with the support of the society around it.

I wouldn't say that was their sole occupation, precisely - they suppress individuality, mismanage culture and quash progress in plenty of other ways!

Hey now, this is a thread primarily concerning this suggestion, and I'd like it to not turn into IRL politics. I'm concerned about gender being a hard-and-fast for characters if this were a thing that happened, because Fallen London is and always has been pretty awesome about supporting non-binary players.

I don't even think the emblem needs to be tied to sexuality at all. You could pick an emblem to represent your character, perhaps?

Alternately, just use the cameo pictures and have a single "Player Spouse" item that uses a different picture at each level? I'm sure they could rig something around that.

It was only an observation, nothing more. Wasn't trying to derail.

  • And I know that Failbetter has done an awesome job. I'm one of those gender non-binarys that is walking around IRL.

I had a sneaking suspicion the top hat idea wasn't my best work. Perhaps it could just be the animal representing the highest of their four qualities? Or they could pick from a list of a few NPC faces?

It could always be the spouse's cameo in the "Spouse" block in the extended inventory.

    Just spitballing....

What if, after marriage, the spouse was given the option of customizing their partner's abstraction? One stat point, one reputation point, and a range of avatars.
