I haven't played for a while and just saw that some of the new options unlock with a certain amount of "pennies"?
Of course, these pennies correspond to the value of items in my inventory. But if I click on an action costing 1000 pennies, how do I know which of the items in my inventory I will lose?
Right now I'm too afraid to click on anything...

You're good! For years, echoes and inventory were entirely separate, and met only at the Bazaar. Now, they're all mixed together like gin and strychnine!
