So I recently got my billion rat and I am curious as to what happens when I ascend to Godhood. It says my game ends, so are there things I should do before I ascend?

Follow the Tally of Rats storyline. You will enter an area where death is illegal, and everything is pain, but it will be worth it. You'll also lose ALL of your rats. Great way to raise the stakes. I followed it. Took me two months to get out(it practically requires one to rescue you), but I enjoyed getting out. I especially like the ending.
