I want to find this particular skull, but I do not know the best method for doing so. What would be faster, going on an expedition to the temple, or seeking it in the "Seeking Curious and Secrets in the Forgotten Quarter" Storylet? Or maybe another method entirely?

  • It's hard to say for sure, since we don't know the exact odds of any of the results that give you the skulls.

My intuition is that Expeditions probably have a higher total return in terms of Echoes/action, since they have a higher setup cost and stat requirements. But since so much of that return comes from things other than skulls, Seeking Curios may get you a skull faster.

Fairly unlucky, yes. I would focus more on the curios if I were you as twenty times doing that expedition must have taken a huge amount of actions and supplies.

It is definitely a matter of luck

I was very lucky - I got a skull on my first expedition after getting the Missionary/Firebrand story.

My alt on the other hand did days of grinding both Seeking Curios and expeditions before getting one.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

It's a bit kind of sort of late, but I did that thing what I do and wrote up a fairly comprehensive guide to stuff in the Nadir, how to get there, what to bring etc.

The cave is tricky as you only see a certain number of cards before having to leave. So you are probably just unlucky but the card is The Catafalque. One of the choices gives a pet, the other Tears of the Bazaar.

You know what, for the sake of expedience, I think I'll just look for one skull and fork over for the cinder. While I wouldn't mind giving out gifts, I don't want to be sending out packages for the next month or so. As for what I'd pay, six surprise packages or some combination with other stuff seems reasonable.

What a frightful thing, this skull - it has no eyes, but its look will burn holes into your soul and haunt you in your dreams! A gentleman of my acquaintance, August Von Behringer, was unfortunate enough to find one of these skulls on one of his strolls through the Forgotten Quarter, and seeks to rid himself of it. Please drop him your Calling Card if you are interested, he will be forevermore grateful.

    Edit: It has been taken.

So, that Starstone Demark is really shiny and I want it. Still, my character has a very nice profession as a Mystic and is aligned closely with the church, with good connections to the bohemians and the revolutionaries and Benthic. Nothing against the urchins, but I'm not exactly looking to be most closely aligned with them.

There was some chat about this earlier in the thread. Has anyone sold the location and subsequently managed to re-establish Closest To: with their faction of choice?

I am in the process of doing that now. I was Closest To: The Great Game before selling the location of the Nadir to the Revolutionaries. (What? I wanted a vial of Master's Blood!) You can drop "closest to" on the associated faction card (and the text for breaking up with the Revolutionaries is fascinating) and then get your "Closest to:" with the new faction on their associated card. If you don't want to wait for the card you can arrange for Favorable Circumstances to draw the appropriate card at your lodgings.

You need Do you recall how they came to that place
When you get it Trade 5 Diaries of the Dead to get a Fecund Amber, when you have 5 trade them for a Fluke Core.

It can take weeks of Nadir visits as you just might not see that card on a visit and you need to see it 6 times in total.

I just reached the gate of the nadir... is the cave not much worth doing anymore? Failbetter seems set on punishing people who are new to the game. I always feel like I'm running to catch up only when I get there it's all "LOKI THORVALDSON WUZ HEER AND TOOK ALL THE GUD LOOT!" scratched all over the walls in runes. Still, it'll be good to get some more awesome story.

I think it depends on what stage of the game you're at. I'm currently trying to get stats to 200 and get echoes, but stats come first so for me it's really not worth the grief.

I share your despair about being a Johnny-come-lately, seeing the nerf hammer come down on the cave and Hunter's Keep and fidgeting writer and so on before I get there, but what can you do?

FBG are constantly fine tuning the game, so things change all the time.
Sure, the Nadir used to be incredibly profitable when first introduced. But while some things there were nerfed, you can still find in there some profitable items, and lots of more interesting lore and atmosphere.

But remember that some things are made easier, too. Gaining notability used to be *incredibly* difficult and frustrating (notability used to drop by 1 point every week, there were far fewer options for getting MW and you couldn't summon the Amanuensis card when ready). Those of us who tried to get the tier 4 professions as soon as those were introduced had to work at it much harder than is needed now.

The Seeking Curious Rare Successes should be about equally rare, really. Which is *really* rare.

I do not know if you're POSI - if so, the *easiest* way to get supplies is by cashing in Strong-backed Labour which you can buy at 1350 pence and gives 5 supplies - that's more cost-effective than trading Whispered Secrets, last but not least in terms of action cost.

THat's actually the least cost effective way in terms of echoes. It's the fastest though (2.5 supplies average per action, at 2.70 echoes per supply, which is less than just buying them with money (2.50).)

The tankard is the cheapest, but is also the slowest. (0.85 supplies per action, 57 pence per supply)

Two last questions on the subject, or so I hope - There are four factions that would buy the location of the Cave of the Nadir from me.

    A) Can I sell it to more than one faction? (I assume the answer is no)
    B) If not, which factions would give me the most expensive item in exchange? I know the Revolutionaries can give you Masters Blood that is worth over 1500 echos (!!!), but what are the other options?

I doubt we'll be able to sell the location to any other factions. First, because it would generate aggrieved emails from people who've already sold it but prefer the new option to their original choice. Second, because most of the other factions have little reason to bid. The Masters probably already know (or at least, Mr Wines does); and it would be of little or no use to, say, Society, Bohemians, or the Docks.

Well, it's absolutely up to the devs, of course, but I can think of justifications for many of the factions. For instance...

Society: His Amused Lordship purchases the location on behalf of the Dilmun Club, believing that its secrets are safest in the capable hands of experienced scholars.

Bohemians: Mrs Plenty offers a modest reward for the location, having some use for the Nadir in the treatment of the Northbound.

The Constables: The Special Constables will compensate us for assisting them in containing the dangers of this threat to Fallen London.

Criminals: Dr Orthos is always interested in a tomb to rob, though this one might prove too much for him.

And so on. Some are more likely than others, but, then again, as it stands, some factions are better developed than others. Right now, the likes of the Revolutionaries and the Urchins are getting a lot of attention - no doubt others will too in due time.

The question is: What name did Mr Iron trade under in the Fourth City? (all one word, no spaces {but the answer isn't one word})
It removes all your irrigo: If you use it with no Irrigo, it'll get burned up anyway and do nothing at all.

That's what I'm doing, at least partially because I don't want to have to keep grinding for both Expedition Supplies *AND* Eyeless Skulls (I have 100 Expedition Supplies already, and I want that many when I try the Cave of the Nadir for the first time).
