"Meet Sophia and Soap. She's an academic with a dark secret. He's an Unfinished Clay Man. Together, they hunt monsters."

I am terribly proud to announce the first two pages of the first ever Fallen London comic. Words Chris Gardiner, pictures Paul Arendt.

(if that doesn't work, try http://comic.failbettergames.com)

Many of you will have answered an in-game audience research question last week about whether you'd want to back a Kickstarter for an FL comic. To be clear: A Pinch of Snuff was already finished when we asked that. We're not that fast-working! We had already planned to put it up as a taster and gauge reaction, to see if it was worth taking further.

So, if you like it, tell the world. Share it, link it, pimp it. The further it gets, the more chance there'll be more of it.

["but wait I want more FL game content instead!" Relax. There's a reason my name isn't on the credits for this comic: I'm currently the FL writing resource, and that's my focus at the moment. If the comic gets attention, that means more focus on Fallen London and less on client projects.... and ultimately more FL content.]

I just want that pie. If that won't raise my Hedonist score past 15, nothing will.

That's very cute, trying to play the old drive me mad and make me doubt my own sanity game, Mr. Kennedy. Or Mr. Gardener. Whichever one of you is responsible for this perfidy.

But as this copy of the earlier version of the first page hosted courtesy of a games news article, published circa 2013, demonstrates, you changed it retroactively.

    Your move, sir.

Sorry to dig up this thread like a resurrectionist, but I want to point a minor detail out.
    It takes place in 1899.
That's half a decade in the future of our current place in the timeline.

??? It says "New Newgate Prison, Fallen London, 1891" quite clearly on the first page.

By the way, here's a working link to the comic, since most of those up-thread aren't anymore.

I accidentally reported someone while trying to scroll with my iPhone. ( I hate touch screens...)

Since I am posting here, I might as well ask... What happened to this project? It seems very interesting, and I would love to read more.

For no apparent reason I am suddenly in the mood to quote some Cooleridge...those unfamiliar with it may enjoy the references.

Here's the first verse of Kubla Khan purportedly written while the good poet was in a haze of opiates

    In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
    A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
    Through caverns measureless to man
    Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
    With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
    Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
    Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

My ISP is finally producing proper pages for me to view instead of error warnings, hooray!

I'm delighted by the new comic! Its narrative moves at a thrilling pace; there are no wasted words or images. Both story and art are engaging. I also like the sepia tones Mr. Arendt applied for the antique feel.

"High Adventure!" is what the comic shrieks, and it's a fantastic introductory pull for people who have never played the game. When I recommend FL to others, I'll be sure to link them to the comic.

Page 4, upper right corner, Soap holds his tea cup like a proper gent with the pinky finger pointing straight out, heh.

Oh this is lovely. Fallen London is great, but sometimes the format can make me lose focus and get confused as to what the plot is supposed to be. A more traditional and focused narrative will be excellent, I'm sure.

Seriously adoring your work, guys. Panel three, page three, is a gorgeous composition, and the dialogue - Bagstock's "ow ow ow"; the Bishop's Easter sermon - makes me giggle like a Rattus Faber riding a puppy.

This looks good, and the Clay Man threw me as well, lowest common denominator being the usual way of things. It reminds me of this Penny Arcade strip. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/10/24

"['but wait I want more FL game content instead!' Relax...]"

It makes me sad that this has to be said, but I know people appreciate the explanation. I can also imagine the internal rage that never makes it out in public when someone responds to something like the above caveat with an even more entitled and clueless brain dropping. Hopefully, you don't get any of those this time.

P.S. Vote (and back!) Graphic Novel. I definitely want more.

If people are curious what that middle poster on page 6 says, here's the full text:

"The Department does not pay for the Eradication of DEVILS

Devils are to be treated as TOURISTS not as RAVENOUS MONSTROSITIES

    Remember:

    BE KIND TO OUR NEIGHBOURS"

"Powdered jade"? Isn't that made of souls, or am I listening to the wrong rumors? Either way, it hardly sounds fit for human consumption!

You would be most encouraged to try such an exotic thing, and you shall find that it is more to your taste than you might think.

Well, there's too much it could be. Tried hidden links in the graphic, and that could still be the thing IF there's code in there to take away the hand when it hovers over the link.

I see a lot of things in the background which could be something significant. Not sure about if they are relevant.

And then there's what look like letters and numbers in various points and if they are, they don't spell anything, but it could be like the River in a Box and be an extension for the URL, but WHICH main site could it be? Storynexus? EchoBazzar? FallenLondon? The comic site?

    Needless to say, I'm lost.

The bad news is, "You guys no longer have to pony up cash up front and then still agonize about the production because we're getting someone with deeper pockets to do it for you. Just pick it up at retail."

I'll take bad news like that any day.
