I won against katarina, unfortunately. I'd lost all previous duels so this was unexpected. I guess I have no idea how wins are determined these days.
Edit: then I won against Tyler. It keeps happening. I keep accidentally winning. This is. The worst. I am a terrible queue helper ._.
Edit 2: and then I won against sarah sahara and won the tournament a second time. I was really trying to be helpful, but luck is weird. Would it be best if I removed myself from the tournament? I feel bad winning a second time even though I tried my hardest to lose. I worry my 'good luck' will continue and just end up being a nuisance to progress like it was today. This was a complete disaster. edited by NiteBrite on 7/30/2013
I think the problem is that if it's based on plant quality right down to the change points, then losing is a chain reaction since it lowers your plant quality. I started losing as soon as they fixed the thing and just keep getting beaten back down repeatedly since. And every time I lose a round it makes my chances all the worse. I may give up and try again when I've got my plant quality re-maxxed, I haven't decided yet.

That's probably the safest. Meanwhile I've been refraining from healing my plant. Its down to level 17 now.

Well don't worry about me. I'm going to take a break and work on leveling my plant to higher level. My plant has been repeatedly stomped and am now at a contest of cunning. Thank you for the help and I hope you will accept my challenges when my plant is at a good fighting strength.

I was lucky enough to get my Cryptobotanical Rosette.
I am back at a Contest of Strength - will happily accept challenges but must warn you that my plant is somewhere between 18 and 19. When I get stomped I will hold off on regrowing my plant for a while.
Don't want to let it get too low though as I want to see what I can get investigating my little friend rather than just growing it!

Circe, congrats. Investigating the plant is actually an excellent way to use up some of your plant quality, so it would actually help your challengers if you didn't hold off on it.
Having dropped from the Contest of Mysteries all the way down to the Contest of Strength, I'm back at Mysteries again, but right now there's no one to challenge.
My plant is actually kind of feeble. I don't think plant quality is a massive factor -- it may be like Knife-and-Candle, where even a large disparity in stats only gives a somewhat modest advantage. Also, the average number of actions for someone to win the Tournament is 40 or so. edited by Flyte on 7/31/2013

Really - 40 actions. I only lost two or three times, so think I must have been incredibly lucky.
I got the Sleep is becoming a problem card and have lowered my plant quality slightly, still above 18 though.

I've now won the Tournament. Tyler and Katarana: if you find yourself in need of more opponents when you return to the Tournament, I'd be happy to enter the fray again. I'll keep my plant quality at around 16; feeding it on vicars is quite profitable.

NononononoNONONO!!! One wrong click! I tried to build mine back up and was maybe two cards away from getting it back to 19 and with one wrong click it's gone for good! No "are you sure you want to dispose of several years worth of growth including two fate expenditures?" Just gone! Gone for good and a pittance worth of jewels to show for it, and no rosette for me Ever! I am almost in tears with frustration right now, officially my worst mistake in this game.
Especially bad as the plant was one of the only things left keeping me even remotely entertained with this game right now, as grinding Making Waves/notability is just ridiculously sysiphean if you don't play 24/7 (and with bad luck drawing cards still sysiphean if you do I imagine). Well over a week of constant drawing of cards and dozens of dinner invites and I got one notability point which vanished the next day, and the 25 MW I had is now totally gone as well. But I digress.
Well, only a little, because between those two events I am damnably close to quitting playing entirely. I may take a break until some major (and worthwhile) new content drops because I am unbelievably frustrated with this game right now.

You have much of my sympathy, Katarina! I winced at your every sentence.
I've experienced similar situations with other games. Instead of continuing to play the game while you're feeling miserable, please enjoy yourself with a different diversion till the frustration fades. Your character is already quite advanced, so if any major content gets released, you'll probably be prepared. Besides, Fallen London is designed to be played in bite sizes. It'll be easy to jump back in after a refreshing break!
As for Notability, try earning the first level immediately after "Time the Healer", the weekly Notability snatcher, passes. (Ideally, you'd already have the Slowcake Amanuensis card in your hand and a decent Making Waves score.)
Flip cards in the Forgotten Quarter or the Labyrinth of Tigers to increase the draw rate of the Unsigned Message card. Raise Making Waves to 15 in the meantime.
If you're nearing the end of the week and you still don't have an Unsigned Message or the Amanuensis card, wear your best Bizarre/Dreaded/Respectable gear and cash in the 15 MW at your lodgings to draw the Amanuensis for your second Notability level. Since "Time the Healer" is nearing, you'll probably lose the second Notability level before you can draw an Unsigned Message, but at least you'll have the card's minimum unlock requirement ready for the next week.
Storing up fuel for Making Waves is also recommended (mostly for Tier 4 professions which require Notability 5 later). Build up your Scheme points with either an orphanage or a salon.
-- Please do not send me monstrous invitations tinged with the inks of the undernight or Boxed Cats. (I rotate my Starveling list, so it might take me a while to reach your name. I haven't forgotten anyone!)

Man, you guys are sweet. Returned today after my temporary ragequit to find a pile of condolence gifts from people in this thread. That's online games for you. Even if the game itself can be frustrating as hell at times, the community will keep you coming back. And in this case, story, since I stopped back in in the first place to check out the new sunless sea tie in content. Thanks, guys. edited by KatarinaNavane on 9/10/2013
