For those with Shadowy over 80, you know what I'm talking about. Anyone have any idea roughly what level of casing I need to get to have better than a purple chance?

You need casing 10 to unlock it and it tests shadowy, according to a wiki the difficulty is as follows:
117 - High-risk
119 - chancy
121 - modest
123 - low-risk
125+ - straightforward
Also note that a succes does not reset your casing, but merely reduces it (I think someone said they had verified that it drops 32 CP, can't remember which thread though).
It also seems that you will still get the item if even if you fail and without even raising your suspicion, however, it leaves you with a significantly bigger drop in casing. So even if it's almost impossible it may still be an easy way of acquiring small amounts of the sought item, though bigger grinds should propably be left for later (grinding for top-tire lodgings and similar big grinds are best left to when you're almost out of content anyway).
