I thought it might be nice for us newer people to have a general thread. (Railways? Parabola? Polythreme? What even ARE those?) Any more advanced persons wishing to chime in with advice are welcome of course.

Anyway, I have just become a POSI and SO MANY choices have opened up. And they are all expensive, especially since I cashed in my things and spent all my echoes on fancy clothes. What to do first? A lab? A club? A ship? A spouse? Adventures in newly unlocked places? What is even the point of a club?

My ambition needs me to go to Zee, but I need to get the documents together for a ship. I can see a lot of cash grinding in my future. Archaeology seems the best way for me, as the watchful type.

Is there anything I need to get sorted before going to Zee? I have hints at a screaming map, I do not yet have access to the Labyrinth of Tigers, and I have not yet been expelled from the university (which I will be soon, because Alethea will not frame an innocent to spare the guilty, and yes I do dabble in the wiki for a few specific spoilers).

I would hold off on the ship until the Zailing rework that's on the horizon. No telling how things will shake out, what the advantages and disadvantages of the current ships will be.

Well, it's still good to make first steps, before choosing the ship itself since they're still expensive.

As to the answer itself: you'll get a bunch of gold cards, and each will have an option to start something. It'll pin down item-making storylines for later continuation.
After that - visit the wiki and see the costs. Then you can plan the grinds.
Also, unlock all new places and maybe the lab.

Ha, kind of reiterates my question! SO MANY CHOICES! But I don't even have the resources to start several of them, though I did get a brief intro to Sophia's.

That probably means I'm not ready, so I've decided to just keep going with my regular activities (Mr Inch, the University, Empress' symphonies, the Big Rat), but look for chances to get the things for the ship. Parties for personal recommendations, legal documents. It could take me a while, and I'm not planning to go anywhere major until I get kicked out of the university, so that zailing rework might come in first anyway.
So far I've found Wilmot's End and Concord Square, and I'm close to getting Labyrinth access.

Well, things I have learned:
You do not need to have another player for a spouse; the game will provide. I'm not sure which is the better option; this might be a thing to check wiki for spoilers.

Wilmot's End, despite the Great Game theme, still has decent opportunities for the not-very-shadowy.

I have NO IDEA what to do with a mood now that I'm not trying to become a POSI.

I've always found them useful in the Forgotten Quarter to boost Watchful and ensure smooth expeditions. Accumulate plenty of supplies and maybe have access to extra moves as well, since you can dip in and out of expeditions, unlike, say, heists. Then harvest the goodies.

I got into the Labyrinth of Tigers and I have a ship!

I decided on the cheapest option, the Rusty Tramp, and I will save up for a Zubmarine. And I went on a trip to the nearest place just to check it out, and my, Hunter's Keep turns out to be quite interesting. It's going to take me at least a day to get back to London to continue my university & court & spouse plans.

I don't know if anyone else is interested in my thoughts, but here are some developments.

I have achieved Monster Hunter through assiduous pursuit of Notability (5 required). FEAR ME!

I have the option to be kicked out of the university any time I choose, but I'm not sure because I assume I'll lose my lab. I'm close to being kicked out of court, which I definitely do want.

I've bred my first beast in the labyrinth, which seemed disappointing. I was expecting I might get a new pet, not just a reward. Still, something checked off the list. And not a bad reward.

My next step is the cave of the Nadir, since I found the right skull. It is a pain building up the supplies: SO MANY ACTIONS. Strong backed labour seems the best value, but it's so annoying you can only buy and spend one at a time.

I am starting to wonder what fate-locked options are worth investing in. I'm not a big spender, but the 45 fate choice once every few months could happen.

FYI - to make sure you have enough supplies, you probably want to build up to the cap (99) before doing the nadir trip. Supplies are carried over so anything you don't use you can use on the next trip, and it would suck to run out midway through with a few bad rolls.

Social invitations of all kinds welcome! Deadly sparring, plant battles, etc. I can also send sips of cider, or help with suspicion/nightmares for people working on fueling/digging right now.

Send me an in-game connection request if you need a discordant missive or a point of notability.

You don't lose the lab. Many, many of us had long since been chucked out before the lab feature even came along and were able to set one up nevertheless. What you do lose is the profitable carousels. And readmission to the university is required for at least one other feature to work further down the line (for which research at zee is needed).

Breeding in the labyrinth does produce a range of pets (though all but one require Empyrean Redolence), including one that used to be very valuable. Various beasts to breed from are required which are found away from London, One is only accessible with a fate purchase which opens up a rubbery area. So both those are options to bear in mind for your possible fate investments. (Someone once courageously bred all the different options in the Labyrinth and posted the results, It was a significant undertaking, as I recall.)

True! I am archaeologist level 5 and I've done all the non-fate ones, so I know how it usually goes. I've been saving up again, but only had about 30 when I got my skull. I have a mood sitting in my cards, so I will wait until the candle's full and use it for watchful. This will not fail!

Aha! Thank you! That is VERY useful information.

I have to go to Zee for my ambition, so basically I'm saving up for a Zub before I denounce the villain. LOTS of grinding for that. I'll do close to shore trips in the Rusty Tramp, but I think the Clearing Out festival is going to delay everything big. Which will be fun, not a complaint. I joined at Whitsun and hatched ALL THE EGGS! (well, quite a few).

I'm trying to get a Personal Recommendation to get a Ship, but I'm too stingy to use the Bazaar. So I'm waiting for the Veilgarden Party to show up, raise 'Talk of the Town' to 12. Currently at 10.

Also mucking around a bit in Wilmots.

For now, all that has been put aside for digging. Gotta dig and dig...

Digging is great! New hat! Diamonds for the lenses! New weapons for my alt! Bombazine for my wedding! MORE DIGGING! Now to decide where to spend my 30 scrip, and whether to buy some fate. (Who am I kidding, the question is how much fate? I totally need that peacoat and that horseless carriage.)

Nice to meet you everyone! I returned to London recently after quite a long time. Right now I am setting my first goal as raising POSI to the second level. For this reason I need some advise on training my shadowy. From my old knowledge the social options can be very helpful so if someone is willing to befriend me and do some loitering I would be very grateful!

It seems that being down a hole digging puts you [somewhere else] and prevents social action invitations...

The relatively new Heist "The mansion of an Unsympathetic Landlord" might be the best current Shadowy grind.

In case you are worried, leaving the dig does not reset your progress. You can pop in and out. I'm trying to remember to leave when I'm not actively digging.

I decided to take a short break from digging and go breed a beast. I bought the empyrean redolence (20 fate). I'll head back to the dig soon, that sweet cash from all the 2.50 items is helpful, and the map scraps even more so! I've made 3 salt steppe atlases and sold two.

For anybody following this, after the digging I have returned to court and lab and labyrinth.

A couple of notes: you must do the affairs of the heart to conclude court enough to get kicked out. I had neglected that in favour of endless symphonies, and a novel of the future, got to 5 points, then I was surprised that the functionary bumped me back down instead of offering me the scandalous option. Oh well, more monies I suppose.

I am glad of spending fate on the empyrean redolence (I love my new ocelot!)

I am considering spending fate on expanding my lab, but I am quite cautious and I just spent a lot by my standards on the dig to get the horseless carriage. I believe Flute Street is also considered worth it.

Any other suggestions for good value uses of fate for stingy low to mid-game people? Should I try the fate locked archaeological expeditions?

I don't remember the fate-locked archeological expeditions... They're one-time things, so you do one expedition and that's it, you don't get to keep doing them.

I don't think they're that great value for money. Maybe they're neat to play through once, but I don't remember, so they probably weren't that memorable, and I don't think they give any persistent unique items...

They've been around for a while. One of them gave a Judgment's Egg. I don't remember if it gave anything else. Maybe it did if you betrayed the guy.

The other one could give you two Elemental Secrets, but I think there was a random element to it.

This, by the way, was the first hint I saw that a Judgment's Egg is
a soul
