So I'm still on my first shifty student, who is at 2 disgruntlement, and have run out of new things to research. Unless I'm missing something, I have to graduate 4 shifty students before I can hire a meticulous student, let alone gifted etc. It would seem that the mechanics are a bit out of whack, forcing one to research for no other purpose than to grind students in order to progress.
It looks to me like the imbalance could be fixed by either increasing the research required to complete projects, or by accelerating the throughput of students.

Er, if you have disgruntlement, why didn't you just graduate your student and get another one? If they are disgruntled, you are not graduating them when you can.
Also, upgrading your lab gets you more possible research. Significantly more.

Actually, you need to have graduated 5 students before you can bring in a Meticulous Student. But since the only type of student you can hire at that stage are Shifty Students, those first 5 will necessarily be Shifty Students.
But Midnight Voyager is right. I don't think it pays to keep the poorer students past the disgruntlement point--particularly when the Meticulous Student is so much better than the Shifty Student. Moreover, subject to the number of seats available in your Lab, once you are able to hire a Meticulous Student, you can hire a Shifty as well, and have them around working at the same time. That way, you can do the "work together" storylet option, which gets better the more students you have in the lab at one time.

I think its best to train 5 Shifty with research, ignore Meticulous and train 10 more Shifty. After that train every Gifted two times with your research and two times with rare successes. 15 Gifted students, but at that stage you are making some progress in projects. With access to Profound and maxed out equipment real research starts. Its not that long, generally you train 10+ students per day, so after 3 days your work is efficient. edited by Waterpls on 5/8/2020

I'm nearly to Visionary students and I have run out of things to make, but that's not including the Bessemer Steel stuff that we can't start on yet. It seems like there will be plenty enough to get to Visionary students by the end.

If you work on some of the really long researches you'll go through the selection quick enough. I am wondering if some of them might be profitable grinds, particularly the impossible theorem.

Actually you only need to graduate 4, since you get your first point of Teaching Reputation when you take on your first student, and another when you graduate him.

Sigh. If I could only count, I'd be dangerous. I stand corrected.
