The Wikipedia entry makes the point that Whitsun is the seventh Sunday after Easter. Draw your own conclusions.

It doesn't have to be spiders. Maybe it’s an insect or a crustacean of some sort.

Maybe it's a new seasonal event? It's kind of quiet on those between The Feast of the Rose and The Election, so having something for the end of Pentecost could be away to keep interest and new stuff going on even when there aren't huge updates happening.

And I just realized something. Easter was April 12. May 11 is a MONDAY, not Sunday, and Sunday, May 10 is the FOURTH Sunday after Easter in 2020 (though perhaps things are, as they often are, different in the Neath). Whitsunday this year is May 31. edited by cathyr19355 on 4/24/2020

Or bats. It could be bats. That protuberance *could* be the claw at the tip of a bat's wing. Or a Master's wing, perhaps?

The spiders and Pentecost angle makes me think of a church of spiders in their Sunday best, listening politely to a sermon. Given all of Fallen London's strangeness, it's not impossible.

I've been here like 5 years & I know it's a day. Like, a single day. But I'm not sure everyone can participate, it used to be a select few (I think). It's card you draw on that day, it's a gold one, that offers you money for rare items you might still have on you for whatever reason. You can turn in violet amber, master's blood, a St. Cerise's candle.... then they pay you. It can be a great way to make echo's depending on what you have. Bear in mind, I have never gotten this card EVER. So, that's all I got.
Imagine being here five years & you've only pieced that much together & you still have no idea why we have that day or where it came from or what the point is. It's the 'Neath. I gave up figuring things out a long time ago. Just before Sunless Sea's came out... the minute I heard we could properly explore the Zee, I was like "Welp, I'm NEVER gonna catch up on the lore now unless I am a lorn fluke,"

Or were you asking what Whitsun is? Because that is new & "no one" knows, right now it's just a scary poster. With an egg. That has something hatching. An egg that looks cosmogone. But I mean, that probably means nothing. Say, have you climbed the Dome of Scales yet? Amazing view up there of the Parabola Sun.... just amazing. To clarify, De Gustibus was an event that occurred twice in the game's history, in 2014 and 2015. Failbetter unlocked a storylet for one day where, as you say, people could trade in rare items for money. The only reason it's more memorable than other retired snippets is that players could excange Master's Blood for a Sealed Copy of the Crimson Book, an exclusive item equivalent in value. People expected it to return in 2016, so its retirement was more memorable than that of other events with unique items.

It's merely a different view, but with both viewpoints, it offers quite a lot of.... foresight. Maybe a bit of hindsight as well.... cracks don't always let the light in. Sometimes they let it out.

Whitsun is coming: a new festival in Fallen London!
Eggs have abruptly appeared all over London – in bath tubs, balanced on chimneys, nestled in sofas, tucked in the holds of docked ships. And they're vast ones, the size of a beer barrel, an over-rounded dog, a prize-winning marrow.
Acquire an egg. Apply augmentations to it, if you like, then attempt to hatch it. Why not? The d___ed things are everywhere. What will happen when they hatch? Who knows!
We know many of you will want to prepare for the festival. There is nothing in particular that you need to do in advance. However, note that the Apicius Club, connoisseurs of novel flavours, will be reconvening for the festivities, and willing to take all manner of delicacies off your hands.
Whitsun will begin on 11th May 2020, and conclude on the 22nd.
-- Wields the news canon, aboard the hype train.
