A difficult tabby cat has made his home in your lodgings. He insists that only you can help him get what he wants – a return to his former glory. He has a long journey in mind, one that will take him across the kingdoms of cats in search of their mythical King.

Go Tell the King of Cats is the second story in the Season of Endeavours and was written by James Chew. In this season you will experience three stories of high adventure, derring-do and mystery across London and beyond!

Begin with the Season of Endeavours card available throughout London.

Editing and QA: Olivia Wood
Art: Tobias Cook

Exceptional Friendship

In addition to a new, substantial, stand-alone story every month, Exceptional Friends enjoy:

Access to the House of Chimes: an exclusive private members’ club on the Stolen River, packed with content
An expanded opportunity deck: of ten cards instead of six!
A second candle: Twice the actions! 40 at once!

Finishing all three stories in the Season of Animals will make you eligible for an additional opportunity, to follow.

If you want to keep an Exceptional Story beyond its release month, you must complete the related storylet in the current Season’s card. This will save it for you to return to another time.

I'm about to depart for the Court of the Wakeful Eye. And I just wanted to say: I'm a little drunk and I've been listening to the Cats (2019) soundtrack as I play, and I think it going to Memory combined with telling the tabby the truth about his second and third references fully convinced me to do a complete 180 from scolding him to appreciation.

EDIT: The Turbulent Tabby chose to spend his last days in comfort, surrounded by kittens and imparting what wisdom he could. This is both the saddest Fallen London story I've completed in a while, and also the one in which I'm incredibly happy and relieved I managed to be a good friend to all the cats in the story.

Mainly just by the intuition that nothing good could come from a King of Cats whose court was all husks.

I loved this story, though there was one thing I wish I'd handled differently.

It was very bittersweet for me, since I have a nineteen-year-old cat. (He is much less reprehensible than the Tabby, though he has his moments, mainly where the dog is concerned.) In the end, even though the Tabby had what I felt was the best possible ending for him, I burst into tears -- and then went and picked up my cat and held him until he told me this was nice and all but that he required a lift to the kitchen table to lie in the sun.

It must be hard for Neath cats, not being able to sleep in a puddle of sunshine.

"Literally" isn't a thing in parabola, no.
And being full of Orts doesn't mean she's actually a simulacrum. She could just be a tiger who has been possessed and the "empty skin full of snakes" is how it expresses itself in Parabola. If she's anything like other possessed people we'e seen, like Silas, they can be at times themselves and at times snake-brain.

After reading through various journal entries, I think I know what happened between the King of Cats, the Burnished Champion, and the Banded Prince. The Burnished Prince originally went to the King of Cats to obtain enough power to usurp the Banded Prince, but the process wasn't what she expected. The King of Cats is ultimately a result of Fingerking shenanigans, so certain requests with ill intentions causes a lot of unintended consequences. In this case, the Burnished Champion was either partially possessed by Fingerkings or given a bit of their power.

The Banded Prince senses that the Champion is affected by Fingerking magic, so he comes to the incorrect conclusion that the real Champion was kidnapped by the Orts and replaced with a doppelganger. However, the Champion is not a fake, and seems to regret her "gift" and initial wish to supplant her consort, but the Prince does not know this.

If you choose to deliver the Champion's petition to the King of Cats, it takes back the initial gift and the Champion returns to how she used to be, making the Prince happy and helping the tigers. If you kill the Champion, the Prince thanks you because it at least meets his expectations about how traitors should be dealt with. At the same time, the Banded Prince is upset with the results of his petition because King of Cats fulfilled his requests in a pretty terrible way: making the Champion harmless, but at the cost of all her good qualities. It's a sad story, all things considered.

I am a sucker for a good redemption arc, and this ES was fully satisfying, in a sad bittersweet way. Also I am fond of animals and animal-related stories, so I'll love whatever has cats, rats, etc in it - had the story been exactly the same but with humans, I don't think I would have cared half as much (and no, I don't love animals more than humans IRL, in case you're wondering; I just think they make for wonderful characters.)

My fave ES is still the Valkyrie one, and by this point I doubt it will ever be topped, but this one's up there with my other favourites. Some stories are funnier when you fail (like Fine Dining, that everybody hated but I enjoyed immensely), but with this one I'd have been heartbroken, had I not managed to make all the cats happy. Can you tell I really loved it?

Please, I just want to know if trusting him would end badly. Do I at least get to step in before something goes wrong?

This is not a kitten-murdering kind of story. They will be fine.

I requested that the Ship's Cat and her kittens be given a home. So far, it seems to have panned out well.

I picked the same as you, and after reading these echoes, am now slightly confused as to whether my good end is in fact good or not.

The prince certainly seems happy with the result, but is that because
the fake companion is just pretending better, or did undoing her wish return her to normal? I thought the latter, but if so, then why did the fake make the request of me in the first place? Is the real companion somehow able to briefly surface? Sounds hard, what with being a skin bag full of snakes, but maybe that's less literal and more parabolan metaphor logic.
Suscribed again this week and this story really made me thankful for it. The story of the Turbulent Tabby, more than the pursuit of redemption that I had thought it was, happened, from my perspective, to be more of a dissection between unending willingness to pursue one's wishes in life, until its very end, or reflection on time as possible catalyst for the embetterment of oneself and coming generations. The final decision was difficult for me thanks to the development of the feline, specially in London (had to admit that the fragments of the Carnival's cat made me quite melancholic). Here I will leave the excerpt of my chosen ending, which was the fulfillment of the cat's wishes. I pondered the decision for a long time, since the King of Cats did not appear as truly trustworthy to me, but in the end I chose this one for roleplaying reasons, and I have to say I do not regret a thing. The minor critique I would like to express is that I would like the possibility of exploring both variables of the Parabolan ways, since while short, they were really vivid and beautiful. That said, great job!

I loved this story. I just finished it and I can’t help but cry at the end. I helped the Tabby know what it’s like to be a cat again. I’m still kinda crying as I write this. I wish there was a way to keep the Tabby with me. There’s so so much more I wanna show him of the Neath.

I have a few questions about the cat factions and the Fingerkings after playing this story:
1. Who gave the cats the responsibility to protect the borders of Parabola from the Fingerkings? I would assume that it would be the Judgements since they regularly enforce the laws that prevent the Is-Not from spilling over the reality, but it could from a specific one or a different party altogether. The cats are incredibly prideful and are not immune to Fingerking temptations as seen with the Rapacious Prince from "Borrowed Glory" and the King of Cats of this story, so they must respect this entity a great deal. It also must be powerful enough to grant them an alternate form in Parabola to fight against the Fingerkings in the first place.

2. Where did the Fingerkings come from? I know the story about how Fingerkings bargained with Devils and want to be real, but if there is an origin to the cats, there is definitely one for the Fingerkings. Were they born from the egg that gave birth to Parabola? The culmination of treacherous dreams that eventually manifested themselves as snakes? Regardless, something this powerful does not come out of nothing, and I would like to learn more about Fingerking history in the future.
1. It's not entirely clear, but there are hints it is Stone, the half-Sun half-Bazaar mountain of light who rules at the far south and that is probably the nicest god in the Neath. Mainly from the Court of the Wakeful Eye content: If you sail to the Court proper and take tea with the Minister of Enigmas, he alludes to everything ending and the tigers having had a purpose they're supposed to fulfil, while the Minister of Culture alludes to the tigers knowing why they're more intelligent than their surface cousins and the Minister of State Affairs to how the tigers share a common enemy with Londoners. And the fall mentioned in some of the tiger lore introduced in this ES seems to suggest cats and tigers shared a common cause before the schism. Most tellingly of all, if you should offer a Mountain-Shard (a piece of Stone) to the Tiger-Keeper (a tiger charged with keeping Fingerking-posessed people caged, among other things), he has the following reaction:

(When you present it, the Tiger Keeper scarce allows himself to breathe. A tear in his eye, bright as the jewel, forms and falls. "You do not know," he says. And then, something of a prayer: "So we were raised; so we shall serve our purpose.")

2. Now, THAT is definitely still unclear I think. Back when Knife-and-Candle was still a thing, there was an allusion to Fingerkings striking a bargain with devils to create prisoner's honey. From Sunless Skies, the Prophet Exile's own account highly it implies it was a Fingerking or something similar before it was turned into a story, if you ponder the entity's past. So at least one may have given the Judgements considerable trouble in the form of the basis for the Liberation of Night. But then, Skies also indicates the Curators (the space bat species the Masters belong to) remember a time before the Judgements' reign. In conclusion, all we really know about the origin of Fingerkings is that they've been around for a while.

I really enjoyed this one. I've been feeling low since all the IRL nastiness kicked off but this gave a moment of happiness, so thank you.
I chose to accept the King's gift but also managed to make everyone else happy - the kittens ended up at the court and I chose to grant the champion's wish, having (somewhat naively) taken her word at what the Prince's request was. Turns out they both wanted the same thing anyway.
The ending I got for this was the second time FL has made me actually cry, the first being HOJOTOHO!, so I think I have to give it a 10/10 based on that.

Thank you again.

I'm glad that I was able to help the Ship's Cat
be taken on at the Banded Prince's Court
especially since the result is so adorable, but annoyed with myself for delivering the Banded Prince's petition to the King, against my better judgement and he wasn't very happy about the result either. I'm very glad that I managed to give the Tabby the Closing of a Life ending -- I confess to checking the echoes here first so thank you to all who posted ahead of me! this story made me tear up a bit so very glad for that. I liked this story -- short but bittersweet. (but also, I like cats! the Duchess is my idol.)

Do we know why Stone is against the Fingerkings yet?

Don't think there's a coherent reason given, although her being half-Judgement and the whole threat of the Solonacean Conjunction i.e. the precursor to the Liberation of Night created by another Fingerking is probably part of it. I seem to remember there's some earlier lore about how the Fingerkings want to reach Stone but never can and in Seas one says it will willingly die and "meet the Skin of the Sun" in exchange for drinking some of your captain's future so you can keep the space it leaves behind in a box (which protects against sunlight when colonising Aestival.

But as far as I know, we don't really know Stone's full motivations for fighting the Fingerkings.

I must've picked the absolute worst options for this one, because my version of the story... basically had nothing happen.

Happy ending for the Tabby, alright ending for the kittens, the champion and prince disappeared from the story. I thought ignoring their requests would do something, at least. upset

I feel for you. I had a wonderful old tabby who lived to be 21; it's been 6 years now, since she passed, but I still remember how her last days wrung my heart, and I still miss her despite having opened my home to a wonderful Maine Coon tom.

I suspect that the desire for sleeping in sunshine is one reason the cats of the Neath have chosen to prowl Parabola--it is an approximation of where most cats would probably like to live. It is probably why the Tabby wanted his Parabolan form back.

To my knowledge, it was only obtainable as one possible outcome of Hallowmas 2018.

The character of the Envoy of Arbor was introduced at that festival, as a teaser for the Arbor-related content that was released throughout 2019 or so (the Heist, the Arbor card & associated location, and maybe related to the 3 Expeditions). The finale of that festival was choosing who would become the Ambassador to Arbor. Choosing yourself was only one possible outcome. The choice, or lack of choice, results in minor textual variations to the conclusion of the Heist.

I think this is amongst one of the shortest Exceptional Stories but it has been one of the most enjoyable.

Amy story that can make me detest and feel sympathy for a companion has done a good job in my eyes. It's like dealing with your least favourite sibling who is trying to make amends in their own broken way.

I won't miss the Tabby but I hope he's happier in his new form.

I was a bit confused too, but inferring from the Tiger Keeper's portrait in hindsight I assumed Fallen London tigers are less...biologically true to life and more Hobbes/Tawky Tawny at edging around being able to do human things

+I loved the writing and the weirdness of the King of Cats. Parabola is almost always written superbly, and this was no exception. It was a sad story of course, and I am sad I didn't get the chance to satisfy everyone since you can only deliver one request.

Perhaps, given the times, I would have preferred a story like the previous month's ES, but this does not take away from the beauty of this one.
