Clay men got a big upgrade:

New art on the generous widow card "for the sake of appearances" option:

From "The Life of Crime" card:

From "An Afternoon of Good Deeds"

From the "ConnectedBig Grinocks" card we get some very impressive new wave art:

(new art of waves, that is, not guys with skinny ties and too much hairspray)

This might be new as well, though it's less detail rich. At any rate, it's new to the Docks card.

New Question for the Overgoat:

New Aeolian Scream when I fail:

New map art used for the Conscience of Empire quality:

Mrs. Plenty's anatomy demonstration just got more educational:

Beneath the Neath just got scarier, too!

Madame Shoshana can help with your art as long as its MUA:

New art for Mr. Inch (who was badly out of date)

Not sure how I feel about hunting dangerous game now, though...

New correspondence art is pretty nice. And more varied!

As is the art used for Scholar of Correspondence:

Baseborn and Fowlingpiece and the Great Downward Engineering Company both got upgrades:

New art for Favors in High Places:

Can't recall for sure if the Master Jewel Thief is new art or been around for a while; the Celebrated Artist's Model, sadly, does not have new art.

Souls definitely look more impressive and unnerving now!

My colleague at the university may have a problem, but it's not with the art for her books:

My Louche Devil definitely has learned how to throw the right kind of Society Dinner (bow-chicka-wow-wow)!

This is fun. Kinda like a scavenger hunt. I gotta poke around and see what other new ones have showed up!

Art changes are always going to be very controversial. I personally adore all of them I have seen so far. I think they look gorgeous and really fit with the feel I get for the writing of Fallen London. And I have always been a far more the more real pieces compared to the old cartoony and undetailed ones.
So I would like show my appreciation to the art team for these. I love them.

The art is lovely but it is also humorless. Not sure it fits with the writing, to be honest. While I can see many clear improvements (i.e. the stack of books) there is nothing "delicious" in the new faces. I always found FL narratives hitting harder when they lulled you into delightful romps and then smashed you into horrible revelations. Now the horror is upfront. The old art was not perfect some many changes are welcome; for example the new art makes it much clearer we are into perpetual night. Still, the complete lack of any playfulness is daunting.

To be fair to FBG, which is clearly trying to continue to improve the game in all respects, here are examples of new art I like and new art I have no problem with.

New art I really like:
  • The stack of books icon (shows up on a number of cards as well as being the "Collated research" icon);
  • The new "paperwork" icon (e.g., used for Sworn Statements);
  • The new "Favours in High Places" artwork (easier to spot than the old one, and now clearly distinguishable from the art on the "Slowcake's Exceptionals" card.
  • The new "Expedition Supplies" art (the dark background with highlights style really works here).
New art I'm fine with:
  • All of the Amber icons;
  • All of the Souls icons (though I'll note that my husband finds them harder to tell apart in his inventory);
  • The bag icon for Certifiable Scraps (it's a bit dark in icon form and oddly spiky for a bag, but whatever);
  • The new Question Mark for "Senses of Deja Vu" (A question mark is a question mark is a question mark, but at least this one looks Victorian!);
  • The Constables' helmet image (odd colors, but clearly visible in small and big sizes);
  • The flame image.

These newly updated pictures are more like the works appearing in "sunless sky", they are real, but they do not match the style of most of the works that are still used in London at present. The details in these paintings cannot be discerned at all, because they have been reduced to less than one centimeter in size)
Maybe one day I will get used to these pictures.
But now the exquisite details on these new pictures can't make it more advantageous than the original icons (because on a mobile phone with a screen size less than 5 inches, you can't see what is drawn in the small icons at all. )

I like this art for itself, but it just does not blend well with the earlier cartoony style. They're going to have to change every single existing image to make this work, I fear.

Here's my thought:
The new art is so alive and it moves me to see how FL's art direction advances!
But, the Gang of Hoodlums' new icon is too much. A greenish version and nothing more makes me think, specially in this social context, at an infected criminal. :| Too pale and too stale, sorry! upset

I also preferred the rubbery man in a top hat, and I liked the revolutionary chap better when he looked more like a Guy Fawkes mask come to life, but Stolen Kisses is the only one that I genuinely think is just a worse version of what it was before. Everything else is just a preference or a negative reaction to newness on my part.

Most items look better. It's the faces that, despite being good or even great as standalone art, lack the fun element that makes FL a delicious gotic underworld instead of a more generic horror game. The quality is there in the writing; the realistic art style removes it from the illustrations though.

Exactly. The old art just oozed charm, fun, and humor, and was a huge part of the reason I held such affection for so many of the characters. They had so much personality and it was apparent even in the tiniest of icons. I miss the old artstyle so much.

This whole game feels like it takes itself way too seriously now.

She's at least two iterations old.

First everything was b/w and very simple illustrations that looked almost scanned in from a sketch pad.

Then came the colored but simple illustrations.

Then the sharper and more angular images we've had recently.

Now we're getting really nice digital paintings.

I like the way everything looks, but I have to say I kind of missed the abundance of silhouette images. They seemed to suit the Neath best in my opinion.

...of course, now London has electric lighting, so maybe that's making a difference. Wonder how much longer beeswax harvesting will be a viable gig economy?

I do not like the new "Stolen Kisses" icon. I can see that it's practically the same image, but before it looked to me like a very nice "kiss" icon, and now it looks like a close-up of someone's mouth.

I'm digging most of these. It's a little jarring right now, mostly because of the "something is different!" factor, but also because it makes the art style of Fallen London more fractured. I know the Church is more conservative than the rest of London, but that vicar really needs a haircut y'all. I would absolutely be on-board with more of these.

I appreciate that some of these are just functional, workaday icons, and they don't "pop" more than they need to. The Expedition Supplies icon has already settled into my lizard brain as just The Way Things Are, and I can barely remember it looking any other way (proximity to the Nadir probably helps). Meanwhile, portraits like the Henchman or the Constable are doing their job of being more noticeable and grabbing your attention.

I feel the higher resolution makes palette swaps more noticeable. Specifically, souls and amber. Having the same picture with different colors works better when everything's cartoon-y, it feels a little out of place with more realistic icons. (Also because I was staring at ambers yesterday I noticed the backgrounds actually had different gradients, which helps break them up visually.)

I noticed that the Hallowmas upgrades of the Henchman have not been updated. I'm not expecting them to be, I just really really liked how the companion art from that year was derived from the originals, and now the connection is broken a bit. Not entirely, because the pose is still similar, but they're not clearly "the same guy with a cross" and "the same guy but infernal" like they used to be.

Overall a welcome update, and keep up the good work!

New pocketwatch, dance, and "express an opinion" art in "A Polite Invitation" storylet.

New art on one of the Clay Sedan Chair choices, too:

New art for the alibi and thieves oath on the connected:Criminals card.

New "Ambush Smugglers" art on the Tower of Knives card:

On the one hand, it's gorgeously illustrated and gets across why Londoners hate them so much. Really sells that slick sea wetness, while the old Rubbery art practically looked like a plushie Rubbery. Personally I definitely prefer the new look, the little unnecessary squid flaps are the cherry on top.

On the other hand, I can also understand how many people could be attached to the cute Rubbery look.

EDIT: On a second look it appears the illustration for Shake 'hands'? option in the Slime and Amber: The Rubbery Men card uses the older, more adorable (in my opinion) Rubbery art. Not sure how intentional that is.

I like most of them a lot. Less behind the new Rubbery and new Kisses artwork...I confess I rather like the cute rubbery. And it fits them wearing clothes trying to fit in. The kisses just don't look...I don't know...either romantic or erotic at all? Like the previous was romantic and that is cool but the new does not look like anything but part of a face.

I bet bowl hat is "Chat with the local gossip" at your lodgings. His icon is literally called "bowler." Maybe the old woman is the Implacable Detective? I don't see a maid? So I'm not sure what you mean for that. I'm guessing the wrench might come up during anything where you have to fix something. Zee travel, expeditions... otherwise, no idea.

For the man with the bowl hat at first I thought the same thing, but as I checked there was the old art. Maybe is just a matter of time.
The Implacable Detective could be except for the fact her skin is darker in her old art (both in her businnes card and elections portrait)
The maid I mean the girl with curly hair and green dress betweeen the statue and the caged window.
For the wrench, we'll see, I suppose...

The new art is mostly very nice and shiny; that's a great upgrade for sure.

It's quite surprising for me, though, that while FB have such kind of resource to invest, they do not use it to create new art for the items that have duplicate pictures. I'm talking about Mystery of the Elder Continent, Primaeval Hint, and Elemental Secret, for example. Puzzling Map is updated but still uses the same art as the Map Scrap. There are also at least 6 items that have the same "Boring Paperwork" image, including Deed for a Steamer and Lease for Bazaar premises. I wonder, why not to prioritize and differentiate those.

I'm fine with the new rubbery icon, except that it took a second glance to tell that the squid is supposed to be on top of the shoulders because there isn't enough contrast between the background and the suit.
