The Feast of the Exceptional Rose is upon us! Visit the Shopkeeper in Viric for a trancelike taste of forbidden romance! Show your affection or scorn through unexpected and creative gifts! What will the season have in store for you?

Rewards from the Feast can be won by increasing Masquing. Raise your Masquing through participating in the revels and the exchange of gifts. Later in the festival, use Masquing to unlock unique companions.

Discover all the festival has to offer on Celebrate the Feast of the Exceptional Rose, available throughout London.

Visit the Shopkeeper in Viric

“All our Phantasies are made to measure.”

Longing for a taste of what might have been? Yearning for someone you could never possess?

Recently licensed for the public, the Shopkeeper in Viric peddles trance-dreams which offer a vision – less than sleep, more than a daydream – of a false-wedding to a major London figure.

Begin in Veilgarden, where you’ll find the Shopkeeper. For 20 Masquing, you’ll receive a dream of a love impossible, presented across three opportunity cards.

There are some additional options within the dreams for those of you with the following professions: Midnighter, Licentiate, Crooked-Cross or Monster-Hunter.

There is no limit on how many dreams you can purchase. You may be tempted to dream away the whole Feast…

New Companions

Companions in Fallen London – be they romantic, platonic, animal or mineral – offer boosts to your stats, and little stories. The Feast of the Exceptional Rose is an ideal opportunity to meet new ones.

This year there are a handful of new companions to choose from, available in exchange for Masquing:
  • Develop a more personal rapport with Dr Schlomo
  • Discuss improbable anatomy with A Debonair Paleontologist

And for higher levels of Masquing, which require you to receive a gift that was bought with Fate:

  • Help a Countess of Thorns acclimatise to the rude environs of London
  • Listen to the war songs of A Crimson Captain
  • Go drink for drink with Captain Amelia Whitlock

Tokens of love! Tokens of scorn!

Exchange gifts with other players to show them the truth of your heart! Or something more enigmatic. A glass of teeth by any other name would rattle as sweetly.

Your accrued gifts can be kept for sentimental reasons, or exchanged for different amounts of Masquing.

Make friends for the exchange of gifts on the Failbetter forum and our Discord.

The Lady in Lilac

“You are desired,” she says. “Give me the proof of it, and I’ll make arrangements.”

The enigmatic Lady in Lilac visits London during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose.

From the 13th of February, you will be able to draw the Lady in Lilac from your opportunity deck, allowing you to trade in your feast-gifts for Masquing. You’ll also be able to turn in your Masquing for special companions on the Encounters at the Feast card.

The Lady in Lilac and Encounters at the Feast will remain available until the 24th of February, after which your remaining Masquing will be converted to Making Waves when Time, the Healer visits.

You will still be able to visit Clathermont’s, exchange gifts for Masquing and collect companions until the end of the Feast, on the 24th of February.

Skin-bound memories!

How better to prove your devotion than through permanent ink? High time for a visit to Clathermont’s Tattoo Parlour!

A unique story involving the Neath’s famed tattooists is available for the duration of the Feast.

Find the Clathermonts in Ladybones Road when you have A Name in Seven Secret Alphabets at 4 or higher.

Continue this story from the same area by playing News at Clathermont’s from 13th February.

Premium Story: The Brass Grail

Scandal in London as the Bishop of Southwark is summoned to court. Old sins weigh heavily upon the mitred head. Can one ever truly escape the shadow of Hell?

This winter’s premium story by Nigel Evans is now available on the Fate page, for 35 Fate.

Your key dates for the festival are:

6th February – Festival Opens
13th February – Masquing can be exchanged for companions
20th February – Gift-giving and feast activities close
24th February – Exchanging gifts for Masquing, the Clathermont story and meeting companions close

Gracious Widow -- Midnighter gets Perfumed Gunpowder.

Cheery Man -- Licentiate gets a Devilbone Die, which are rare but not exclusive to this event.

Bishop -- Crooked Crosses get a Justificande Coin.

Sinning Jenny -- Monster Hunters get a Knob of Scintillack, which are not exclusive to this event.

At the end of the third dream, you get a Magnificent Diamond regardless of dream-spouse or Profession.

For those of us who already have a lot of the non-Fate Feast companions, the ability to spend masquing before Lilac showed up in the second week was great, because it meant you didn't have to sit on your hands and waste that Feast card every time it popped up, or use it to add echoes to the pile. Plus, I always enjoy new delicious words, and getting to see 'behind the scenes' of some of London's luminaries was well worth the time to me.

Sigh. I was hoping for an unusual reward, but my character is a Correspondent, so there was none to be had. :-(

A little odd that there is nothing for Glassmen, considering the shopkeeper in Viric is definitely dealing with the Fingerkings.

One thing I found really interesting was the Justificande Coin, as I only know of one reference to it from a Ambition teaser.
edited by The Curious Watcher on 2/9/2020

I feel like the Justificande Coin might be an item that a Heart's Desire player will have to get to progress, so someone who got if from the trance dream can jump past that step. It shares an icon with First City coins, the poker chips used in the Marvelous. A further connection is that First City coins are gifted in sets of 30, a reference to Judas trading Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The source and the stamped message "ONE DAY YOU WILL FORGIVE" makes me imagine that it's some kind of religious relic related to Judas' betrayal. If someone has an echo of that option, I'd love to see exactly how the conversation went down. I have no idea how this would work in the Marvellous, but that seems the most likely ambition its related to.

The conclusion of the dream-trance: https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/PSGarak/17692170
You were probably expecting something more decisive. I expect the Bishop was as well. Which is why that was not the approach that was taken.

They're all on the wiki now, none best in slot but the three fate-locked companions each give a point in a different new quality, one of which is also boosted by the equipment reward for Ambition: Nemesis. The instructional note accompanying the qualities indicates that they will be useful in upcoming content. Presumably, this means endgame, post ambition content, if the ambition rewards are boosting them as well. Specifically, the Countess helps you with your mad science, the Captain helps you with political scheming, and Captain Whitlock helps you hunt monsters.

Viric dreams are independent of the Lilac and "Encounter" cards.

After I used the last of my Masquing on a Viric dream, I noticed that my "Encounter" pinned card seemed to have disappeared. However, I discovered that I still had a couple of 1 Masquing gifts left. After I converted them (giving myself 2 Masquing) via the Lilac pinned card, "Encounter at the Feast" reappeared. I deduce from this that you cannot see the pinned "Encounter" card if you have no Masquing.

How many profession-specific dreams are there for each of the (four specific) professions? I.e. for the midnighter, is there only one branch in the Gracious Widow's dream that yields something different? I'm currently doing the completionist thing and trying to get all four professions plus potentially all possible storylets for each of the four potential partners. (That makes 12 or even 15-18 different tries, depending on the possibilities. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Each current dream-partner has one (and only one) specific profession-related option on a Profession path, second card.

So Midnighter has the Widow, Crooked Cross - the Bishop, Licentiate equals Cheery Man, and Monster Hunter goes to Jenny.

Look, I'm not saying let me marry the Crimson Captain, but let me marry the Crimson Captain. I'll give you my Firebrand, Sister Lydia, Green Eyed Devil (since I never got the option to marry him), Impenitent Devil (or him.... this is a running theme here.... only option is the annoying Firebrand & I will give you regardless), & my aunt.

So, I used every trick in the book and, in the span of three days, I managed to get the two Fate-free companions and do six viric dreams - three of Jenny, and one of every other participant.
Beautiful writing, barring the references to intimate relationships, which were extremeley dry. Honestly, I would have preferred it if they were omitted alltogether - they conveyed a lack of emotion that was a bit disturbing, with the possible exception of Jenny. Unless, of course, the point was that these characters had no real intention of allowing you any closer - just a perfunctory glimpse, to serve their own ends. Which works, storywise.

I was also a bit startled that both versions of Jenny's home life were so similar. I am not sure if there was any difference between them, at all.
Other than that, I was expecting Dr Schlomo to open up a new option on his card, but that's a minor thing.
All in all, it was something new, and it was fun.

The text indicates there's a number of other names in their catalogue that aren't up for sale, so presumably they'll update the roster with new names every year or so, like the Incarnadine Robe.

Also, perhaps the equivocation of the coin and the gunpowder with the devilbone die and the scintillack indicates that they're going to be added to the game elsewhere in the future? I know something like this was already done with Flint, where a bunch of little items like stygian ivory and royal blue feathers were added as minor rewards in that story first, then distributed throughout new content over the next few years.

For completionists, I recommend only going for the Bishop of Southwark -Crooked Cross pathway and the Gracious WIdow - Midnighter pathway, as those have event-specific items. Unless you REALLY want scintillack and a devilbone die, don't switch Professions to Monster-Hunter or Licentiate if you are not one already.

Thank you! I’m off to change professions now!

There is no new gift this year.

But there does seem to be a new joke. At least His Amused Lordship asked if I’d heard the one about the Drownie and the Starveling Cat. I have not. Have any of you? And is it repeatable in arguably respectable (yes, I use the term VERY loosely) company?

The text indicates there's a number of other names in their catalogue that aren't up for sale, so presumably they'll update the roster with new names every year or so, like the Incarnadine Robe.

Also, perhaps the equivocation of the coin and the gunpowder with the devilbone die and the scintillack indicates that they're going to be added to the game elsewhere in the future? I know something like this was already done with Flint, where a bunch of little items like stygian ivory and royal blue feathers were added as minor rewards in that story first, then distributed throughout new content over the next few years.

One thing I found really interesting was the Justificande Coin, as I only know of one reference to it from a Ambition teaser.

But what if it's about Nemesis?
