17 July 6.2.26

- (Belated: this actually occurred last week but was not properly reported) – changed the mechanic of the Bone Market to apply an Exhaustion counter when the player has constructed a highly valuable skeleton. This locks them out of repeating a high-value sale for a duration that corresponds to the value of the skeleton sold.

- Bone Market buyers who formerly capped out at 14 Bizarre, Dangerous, or Respectable now remain available at any BDR greater than 3.

- Added an option to visit the Viric Jungle for those who missed it at the Feast of the Rose; also added easier routes to the Viric Jungle for Silverers.

- Added an option to spend Surveys of the Neath’s Bones at Bullbone Island in order to guarantee receiving a Horned Skull.

- Changed the equation for ambushing an animal during the Parabolan hunt so that the difficulty of ambushing high-ferocity animals does not scale up as fast.

- Added viric-coloured icons for the viric suit and viric frock in place of the letter V.

- Fixed a bug on mobile where red-bordered cards persisted in the opportunity hand after being played.

- Fixed a bug trapping mobile players in an empty “Sometimes” tab after playing an opportunity card moving them to an area without an opportunity deck.

- Made use of Annings' Reliable Kit visible even when the player does not have a complete skeleton.

10 July 6.2.21

- Fixed a bug where Bazaar shops sometimes appeared at the Upper River Exchange, and vice versa

- Added an option at Moloch Street for people very early in their Railway development to allow them to do two Board Meetings in a single week rather than one.

- Converted two branches in Ealing Gardens, “Upper River Artistry” and “Rubbery Observances,” to grant Rumours of the Upper River rather than hints or implications. Added a reward in Whispered Hints to another option on this “Rubbery Observances.”

3 July

- Revised some prices to Upper River shops

- Updated the art for several currency items

- Added information to the Assemble a Skeleton storylet so it is easier for players to see the relative values of various branches

- Revised the process for attracting buyers at the Bone Market to make the gameplay clearer, made the Bone Market available for Social Actions, and removed the cost of 1 action point to enter and leave the market. Players already there may need to leave and re-enter to see the changes

- Added consistent sources of a few types of bones at the Bone Market. It is cheaper to obtain these elsewhere, but those frustrated by the hunt can spend for them here

- Removed text on the Itinerant Physician branch that suggested women are not typically physicians, to bring it in line with other recent updates related to gender

- Revised the option to use a Vial of Cantigaster Venom in your laboratory. Formerly, it was possible to consume a valuable, fate-locked item for a very large amount of research. Now the option produces a much smaller amount of research (though still above average for a single move at the laboratory) and inflicts Wounds, but does not remove the Vial of Cantigaster Venom

- Revised a branch that allows you to build a statue of yourself so that it now confers the quality “Honoured with a Statue”

- Added hints about where to obtain Railway Steel, and made the Laboratory branch that leads to its development visible when the player has not yet obtained Prestige 40, in order to make it clearer how to advance here

26 June 6.2.20

It's clammy hot as the Dickens here and no sign of rain. Still, we've got patch notes for you, weather be d___ed!

- We've made a change to the Myself tab that cuts loading times by 40%. Until today, it showed tooltips for your qualities when you hovered/tapped on their icons; we've removed these, as they duplicated information available elsewhere on the page

- Fixed a bug preventing you from changing your face from the Myself tab

- Fixed a bug to the Tomb Sciences card in the laboratory whereby the player could play a research branch even when there was no active experiment; also increased the amount of research given by this branch

- Reduced the amount paid for Jurassic Thigh Bones by certain individuals, as this amount was out of line with the intended economy

- Equipment items that are normally also usable but currently unusable because you’re in a storylet now have a red border to indicate this

- Fixed a bug preventing screen-reader users from changing outfits

19 June 6.2.10

I was going to write something gnomic here about the state of the weather where I live but I didn't want to kick off unfounded speculation about anything, so instead, I bring some short patch notes with no preamble of interest:

- Added branches that allow persons with the Silverer profession to move quickly between places

- Changed wording on the Change your Profession branch in the Writer Letters section of your Lodgings, to make clear that it only removes your old profession, it doesn’t grant immediate access to a new one.

- Fixed a bug displaying successful name changes as failures

5 June Version 6.0.9

- Updated the copyright notice

- Fixed an unclickable dead zone around map labels

- Fixed a bug that allowed the purchase of deck refreshes in areas with infinite decks

29 May Version 6.0.5

- Updated the screen-reader-accessible map to exclude completely non-interactive locations (e.g., Hater’s Bridge) while adding locations that are accessed through playing a storylet (e.g., The Empress' Court)

- Fixed an issue with Mr Pages' Lost & Found that prevented the cost of items there from displaying properly

- Introduced some backward-incompatible server changes (laying the groundwork for future new things, but containing nothing exciting themselves), which triggered a change in the version number from 5 to 6

- Replaced the art for the Numismatrix with a new portrait.

- The ‘Use’ button on Usable equipment (e.g. the Starveling Cat) is now easier to access

- The app will now prompt you to refresh the page if it needs to update

15 May Version 4.1.22

- Fixed a bug in which opportunity cards could become out of date if your actions refreshed while you were composing a social act invitation.
- Fixed several bugs causing crashes when playing Fallen London using the Google Translate browser extension.
- Added a Books category, and sorted some items out of Curiosities, in the Possessions Section.
- You can now equip your Starveling Cat, but why would you? It does nothing but destroy all things you love and hold dear.
- Opportunity cards briefly disappeared from the Tomb-Colonies.
- Two new weapons experiments were introduced in the Lab in order to provide more opportunities for players with low prestige and to provide a souvenir for those who missed their Jaguar Blade.

1 May Version 4.1.12

- Fixed a bug that allowed you to pay Fate to refresh your deck in areas with infinite decks.

- Added a Currency category to the Possessions page, and moved a few items out of Curiosities, to help make the Possessions page clearer.

- In the Exceptional Story “Written in the Glim,” added an award of one point of Shapeling Arts at a relevant point.

- Introduced an alternate Airs of Parabola branch when searching the Storm-bird’s nest, allowing the player on rare occasions to discover a different item.

- Fixed a bug where it was possible to use Nightmares in the University Lab to gain research even when the player did not have an active experiment.

27 April Version 4.1.4

- Some players who attempted a Mirthless Compendium experiment while not yet having any Teaching Reputation for their Lab found themselves stuck without a way to progress and were forced to abandon the experiment. Teaching Reputation 1 has been added as a requirement to start this experiment.
- The Making Waves applied when sending or receiving Calling Cards has been reduced to prevent an exploit that violated our terms of service.

- A new category – ‘Osteology’ – has been added, to help tidy up the possessions page.

- A branch to access the Parabolan Base Camp from Your Lodgings had erroneously remained locked when the Base Camp content became available. This was unlocked to allow players to reach their Base Camp with fewer clicks.

- Fixed a bug where failing a second chance when playing a storylet on the map would prevent the storylet from proceeding.

- Failed EF subscription purchases now display a popup.

- Fixed a crash when returning to the Story tab after changing outfit.

17th April Version 4.1.1, still

We've announced changes to Paramount Presence and StoryNexus; check the individual threads to read more.

- A bug occurred because of a specific intersection between Bag a Legend and the Laboratory. A further one was created when fixing it with excessive vigour. Both the original and the follow-up bugs have now been fixed, meaning that those people who could not get the 'Accept a Palaeontological Task from the Dean' in the Laboratory, now can.
- A bug prevented some of the intended text from appearing on one of the monthly storylets following success in the Bag a Legend ambition. This has been fixed.
- In the University Lab, Disgruntlement of the Students has become more menacing. The Student Complaints card begins appearing earlier, and an additional card triggers if Disgruntlement is allowed to rise as high as 6.
- There are now additional options for gaining Parabolan Scouting during hunting in Parabola, offering some advantages to those with high Glasswork or the Favours of Fingerkings.
- The Cartographer’s Hoard now appears under Cartography rather than Goods.

15th April Version 4.1.1

A bug which locked players out of certain Storylets in the Bone Market has now been fixed. For those interested: the bug meant even when a Storylet had a maximum requirement for a quality, but no minimum requirement, the game treated it as if the Storylet had a minimum requirement of -1. This meant that player equipment which set a stat to lower than -1 locked them out.

Some players with high, unremovable Bizarre, Dreaded, or Respectable were locked out of access to certain buyers in the Bone Market. To account for this, several changes were made to companions:
- The Weasel of Social Discomfiture is now really unRespectable.
- Two new companions were introduced with -12 Bizarre and -12 Dreaded respectively.

A small number of people were locked out of getting new students in the laboratory by progressing through Bag a Legend before graduating the Shifty Student. This is now fixed.

Laboratory Equipment upgrades could require a large number of First City Coins, which were difficult for some players to acquire quickly. We have added an alternate branch to perform this equipment upgrade.

6th March Version 4.0.6

Here are your Fallen London patch notes for the week!

- We have removed the "Establish a Parabolan Base Camp" option from the Honey Dens of Veilgarden. This branch was meant to tease future content, and has always been locked. Since it was written, however, our intentions for it have changed. The ability to establish a Parabolan Base Camp will finally unlock soon, but in a different form. It will not be exclusive to those with the Glassman profession (though they will have an easier time achieving it).

- Players with access to the Science Lab may now move their entire Voluminous Library to the Lab for research purposes. Doing so will remove the related card from their opportunity deck.

Map updates:

- Visiting http://www.fallenlondon.com/?compatibility=true will set your browser to use the compatibility map without requiring you to visit Account settings
- If you've been automatically given compatibility map because your browser/device combination looks like it won't run the full map, there's an indicator in the top left that explains this. You can override this in Account settings at your own risk (if your browser/device really can't run the map, it'll crash when you try to open it).
- Fate-locked branches should be yellow once again
- Art for the map isn't loaded until the first time you open the map. You'll see a darkened version of the map while art is downloading (and an indicator in the top-left corner beside the zoom controls). The map is usable while the art is loading.

24th Feb Beta Version Version 4.0.0-beta-216-g91b542c6

Beta patch notes! Hooray! The beta is now closed, and we'll be unleashing the new map on everyone next Wednesday, the 4th of March. Thank you, everyone!

- Compatibility map introduced! Anyone having trouble using the new map with all of its bells and whistles can elect to use the compatibility map, on any device. You will need to set your preference to this map on each device that you use to play Fallen London via Account Settings.
- The Journal and Plan buttons work on map gate events.
- You no longer need to refresh the page in order for newly unlocked areas to glow pleasantly.
- The travel button is disabled when you move to Flute Street
- An Art Update happened!
- iPhone X and other very tall and skinny phones should now have their labels in the right place.

14th Feb Beta Version Version 4.0.0-beta-160-gacde9dd9

It’s another beta special, because we love you.

- A new feature, in which if you move the mouse over (or tap, on mobile) a discovered area, you will see a glowing highlight of the associated building, and can interact with it in the same way as the label.
- A fix for the display of your cameo; this will have the correct image when you are at your lodgings.
- Expired login access tokens no longer crash the app on startup.
- The player marker now crossfades when moving between locations, instead of flinging itself merrily across the map.
- Undiscovered districts are now lit and interactable (produce a highlight on mouseover, can zoom in and see a label for the location) if the player has discovered any destinations within them. For example, if you have received an invitation to the Temple Club before discovering the Forgotten Quarter, you can attempt to get into the Forgotten Quarter - if you have a street sign.
- If there's a content issue where you’re ineligible for an area gate event, the app shows an error message but does not crash.
- The "Perhaps Not" button in gate events is now left-aligned with branches.
- Undiscovered districts are lit if you’ve discovered any destinations within them.
- Storylets which appear over the map are now larger on mobile
- Story fix for the Department of Menace Eradication; players will be returned to the correct storylet when leaving activities.

10th February Version 4.0.0-beta-74-g83906964

Special Beta Edition

- The zoomed-out map will automatically zoom in when you select a district (Veilgarden, Spite etcetera).
- Your position and zoom level will be retained when opening and closing the map (only within the same visit).
- Performance has been improved, particularly on mobile devices.
- The player token now matches your cameo.
- Several small story and player guidance improvements.
- Improved appearance of the zoom in/out buttons. Zoom buttons work correctly on smaller screens.
- Stories played from the map to enter an area now trigger correctly on mobile.

24th January Version Version 3.19.26

The Outlandish Artefact item has been updated, and is now the Unprovenanced Artefact.

The old version approached imperialism in a tongue-in-cheek way that was nonetheless exoticising. This is no longer our preferred approach to depictions of colonialism, and in addition this quality is about to serve a bigger and more involved role in content, so it felt appropriate to amend its description to fit that new role.

We have updated the description on the Bag of Lethean Tea-Leaves item, to make it clear that they can only be used to reset an Ambition before it’s been completed.

With the conclusion to Nemesis approaching, we have had to make some decisions about how Lethean Tea-Leaves will work once you have completed your Ambition.

Lethean Tea-Leaves are purchased with Fate and allow you to reset your Ambition and choose a new one. However, they will only work before you have completed your ambition. Once you have finished your Ambition, the tea-leaves cannot be used to reset it.

We will reveal more about ways you can experience another Ambition in the future, but those plans are under wraps for now. We are also exploring the possibility of adding alternate uses for Lethean Tea-Leaves in some other upcoming content.

If you bought Lethean Tea-Leaves with Fate, and this development will mean they are no longer of use, please get in contact via a support email and we will look at reimbursing your Fate.

17th January Version 3.19.24

We've begun removing support for IE11. That's yer lot, if you don't count the cool stories we've already told you about.

10th January Version v3.12.10-103-g1e7d0928

Little morsels for you this week:
  • Season of Propinquity: the end-of-season trade-in story for this season is now available to everyone who has played The Heretic of Hollow Street, Say it with Flowers and The Committee.
  • At an Elegant Party, it’s now possible to partake of a non-gender-specific option to mingle freely, as is your wont.
  • Issues with living stories and notifications being processed multiple times were fixed.

3rd January Version 3.12.9-113-g6100920e

Just one update for you today, gang:

We had a few requests to remove Deactivated Characters from the Influence count, so that players could replace them with actively playing acquaintances. While doing this, we forgot to include the influence granted by patronage - we've re-included this.

20th December Version 3.12.9-113-g6100920e

Croutons for you on top of the delightful salad that is Fallen London this week:
  • We added an option to Working with the Honey-Addled Detective called Discuss a minor case, which gives you an option to play should you have already completed all available cases.
  • Autofire cards not being removed from hand was still present in mobile responsive view; this is now fixed.
  • Branch currency cost not being immediately updated is also fixed
  • We are planning to phase out support for Internet Explorer 11 in the new year. Currently, traffic via this browser is about 20 people per day. We apologise to those people, but promise the site updates coming in the new year will make up for requiring them to change browser allegiance.

6th December Version v3.12.10-97-ga9c7ab0d

  • Find a new companion available for purchase (and sale) from Redemptions at the Bazaar.
  • Sky-Stories can now be converted into tantalising goods from your Possessions - if you have the right combination of qualities.
  • We fixed a bug related to autofire cards not being removed from your hand after they were played.
  • We also made a performance update related to card drawing.
  • It's possible to bookmark your favourite login portrait using the following pattern:
    https://www.fallenlondon.com/login?hero=name
Replacing "name" in the above with "aunt", "boatman", "ambassador", or "edward"

29th November v3.12.10-96-g209849f8
  • A new look landing page in honour of Fallen London's upcoming 10th birthday on 11th January 2020. This is just the beginning of the celebrations!
  • Removal of SuperRewards as a payment option. SuperRewards is mostly used by players who need to pay in less common currencies. (97% of you use our other payment system, Braintree, which will be unaffected, and this won't affect subscriptions at all.) We’re sorry we couldn't provide more notice: we were only informed a few days ago. Given the short notice, we can't say yet when and if we'll add support for another payment provider or other payment methods: we expect to investigate in the next few weeks. If there were any payment methods that were particularly useful to you, though, please let us know in #fallen-london so we have a clearer sense of which ones it would be most helpful for us to support.
  • An updated Help page, including links to this very Discord. Please watch out for lost new players, and give them any advice you can in #beginner-advice. We were all fresh from New Newgate once!
  • A fix for a rare Bazaar interface bug.
  • Also, we’d like to confirm that the card frequency bug which bothered your decks has been fixed.

Thank you Shaerys!

And hey Failbetter, could you please put the patch notes here too. Discord wants an account and to install some junk on my phone, and I’m just not interested in more of that crap. This is as close to social media as I’m willing to get.

  • Players who almost but not quite meet the Bizarre/Dreaded/Respectable requirements at the Bone Market for buyers who require 0 or 15 can now hire a busker to help them access that particular buyer.
  • Wagering on Urchins' games as either Mr Cards or the owner of the Marvellous gives a slightly more generous reward (an extra snippet).
  • Instead of automatically deducting Credit with the Headmistress on each vote, Sinning Jenny as a Board Member now allows the player to spend Credit to achieve her vote.
  • Additional QLD texts have been added to “Familiarity with the Carpenter’s Granddaughter”.
  • Additional text is provided for the specific case of re-appointing Furnace as TLU leader after choosing another TLU leader and prior to reaching Burrow-infra-Mump.
  • Looking out from the Top of the Dome provides a small additional reward that scales with Glasswork.
  • Edicts of the First City and Apostate’s Psalms are now listed in the appropriate place in inventory given their value.
  • A new activity is possible through Search Parabola for a place in the Neath.
  • A new heist has been unlocked at the Flit.

I just noticed that when Attending Parties, we finally do not have to choose anymore between spending time with Ladies or Gentlemen at the very end! Finally, we can just "Mingle Freely"! smile

Why constrain yourself to the hidebound conventions of a faded age? This is London. You will do as you please. - Indeed! Thank you for this! In Love

I thought I might as well post the old Outlandish Artefact description (taken from sunless seas) and the new Unprovenanced Arefact description (taken from the wiki, updated surprisingly quickly) so people can make the comparison themselves.

Outlandish Artefact: "This belongs in a museum! Assuming that colonial-imperial appropriation for the purpose of hegemonic taxonomisation is a suitable response to the problem of intercultural contact. Which it probably is, because museums are magnificent institutions."

Unprovenanced Artefact: Meticulously crafted by skilled, far-away hands for a deliberate but unknown purpose, and then appropriated, boxed up, and brought to London because "it will look so handsome over the fireplace."

I like the change. The original joke made me laugh, but you're right about it not really fitting the tone of Fallen London. I'm glad the new description keeps the same joke, but tones it down and includes a descriptor that isn't just about how English Academia thinks about it. The new name is especially nice, since it keeps the whole "Victorians not understanding artifacts and exoticizing them" but makes it a trait of how it's seen (unprovenanced, meaning no research has actually been done into its past) instead of just "hey this thing is weird." Of course, what makes me most excited is the hint that they'll be relevant in future content, which means more stories that deal with either the previous fallen cities or other locations across the zee.

13 November

- Modelling in Helicon House now requires a max of 2 Time Remaining.
- A Bag a Legend!-related option in Helicon House has similarly been decreased, though not as much as accepting a commission.
- Several branches that generate Inspired in Helicon House now generate more Inspired.
- Accepting a commission in Helicon House now costs more Inspired, but will no longer reset Inspired if you have more than the required amount.
- Changed how requirements are displayed on the card ‘A Public Lecture’
- Several London opportunity cards have been adjusted to grant greater rewards or rewards that scale with an attribute: ‘Mr Wines is Holding a Sale’; ‘A Day at the Races’; ‘All Fear the Overgoat!’; ‘A Sporting Sort’.
- Several London opportunity cards should no longer appear for high-level players: ‘Investigating Doctor Schlomo’; ‘Reeducating Lyme’; ‘Revisit the Theosophisticals’; ‘The Phantom of the Antimacassar.’
- The card ‘Swap Incendiary Gossip’ has been retired.
- Various Upper River cards that increase Banditry now have that increase correctly capped.

Thank you, Theonie. I'd like to second BillyCosmos and others on here in expressing disappointment that, increasingly, folks that use this forum are becoming second-class Netheans who are not receiving the news first hand but are reliant on the kindness of others.

12 March
  • The branch “A little personal instruction” was withdrawn from the Cheesemonger storylet.
  • Playing cards with urchins in the Upper River now recognises players with The Marvellous.
  • Adding a withered tentacle to a skeleton now gives -1 Antiquity regardless of whether the attempt succeeds or fails.
  • More conversation has been added for the Lackey of Mr Fires (or your own Lackey) if you have one of these installed as leader of the Tracklayers.
  • It is now possible to reappoint a Lackey of Mr Fires / your own Lackey as head of the Tracklayers' union after having switched to someone else.
  • It is now possible to get January elected as a head of the Tracklayers' union if you have already made her a member of your Board at the GHR, and as with the Lackey, she has her own conversation available.
  • A small amount of additional conversation has been given to Furnace Ancona when you speak to her as leader of the Tracklayers.
  • Previously, depending on the order in which the player tried things, it was possible to miss getting a proper introduction to Cornelius before appointing him leader of the TLU. This has been remedied, and the new story beats in question are available from The Next Stretch of Track at Moloch Street.
  • Going through the Great Mirror at Moulin no longer grants “Glowing Viric” or sets the living story “Viric Fades”. This prevents players from unwittingly resetting the living story by repeatedly going through the mirror. It will still reduce Glowing Viric to 1 if you had it at 2.
    • Players who got into a state where they had Glowing Viric but not the living story, as a result of past bugs, should have seen the living story trigger now.
  • A new social act, Tea at Beatrice’s, is now available at Attend to Matters of Society.
  • “A Record of Successful Forgery” and “Dream-Trophies of Parabola” now have quality level descriptions.

I just wanted to say that I really like the new infinite draw decks for parties and the Nadir. I think it really makes sense that they don't interfere with the main opportunity deck, and I even like the fixed hand size of the party deck. I mean, why should a character with a spacious lodgings have more chances to meet a certain someone than a character with small lodgings? Expeditions in the Nadir, on the other hand, might profit from better preparations in a bigger house, so this makes sense, as well.

And also besides it making sense logically to me, I like how much quicker and more spontaneous both actions can be played now, without having to wait until one's deck has enough cards to enter, or to get more cards when inside the action (while one cannot be reached for social actions). I even like that parties have become more unpredictable and exciting due to the hand restriction of three. I mean, before, especially when having a five-cards-lodging, one could meet every individual one wants/needs during a party with just sufficient waiting time - which is absolutely not how parties work in real life. Big Grin

TL;DR: Thank you so much for tweaking parties and Nadir expeditions so nicely, dear people of Failbetter!

1st April (No fools here, just early because we have a bank holiday in the UK)
  • In order to make it easier for players to progress, and to tie progression less tightly to specific story choices in the war, two places that used to use Parabolan Parable now just require Parabolan Commander at 1:
    • to upgrade Oneiromantic Revelations to create more Parabolan Parables, a step in building the staves
    • to unlock the first stage of Shadowy Gains
  • The option to train Shadowy with cats in the Dome of Scales now pays out more points of Shadowy for a lower investment of Sightings of the Parabolan Landscape
  • Several changes have been made to the Dreams story in the Viric Jungle, as follow
    • The option to gain Inspired… from the Bohemian Sculptress now pays out twice as much as it did, correcting for a bug and bringing it into line with the intended design
    • Sightings… can be traded in to further increase a dream’s intensity
    • Metatext is now clearer about exactly what each branch will pay out, and varies with the intensity of the dream
    • There is a guidance branch to help orient new players to this content
  • Cover Identities can now be converted into Memories of a Much Lesser Self at the Cabinet Noir
  • The Marvellous can now be used for the “aleatory methods” upgrade of a Laboratory
  • The effectiveness of Generals in skill-tests in the Parabolan War has been boosted
  • Several costs in the War have been increased to balance the General boost.
  • A new option is available for Tatterskin Shawl-owners in the Occupied Dome of Scales
  • People who missed getting the Wretched Mog at Hallowmas may now find it in the Waswood if the Cats have Parabolan Dominance
  • A new storylet has been added to the Temple Club.

7 August 6.3.3

- Corrected an error in the Bone Market that would sometimes redirect users to a retired storylet, causing them to encounter some non-standard values for skeleton assembly.

- Changed the payout of the Enthusiast in Skulls so that he no longer takes rostygold away from players whose skeleton value is too low.

- Removed an erroneous requirement on the opportunity card to dredge the river at Jericho Locks, which was excluding most players from discovering it.

- Added opportunities for Doctore of the Guild of Gondoliers to get a discount on traversing the canals as well as the ability to choose their destination in advance. Made some adjustments to payouts received from canal destinations.

- Added a price of 1 Magisterial Lager for talking to the Archaeologist at The Arborist’s Hands.

- Revised the option to throw Slowcake out on his ear, to require the player to have an Entry in Slowcake’s Exceptionals before doing it. Otherwise, it was possible to grind an overpowered option.

- Made Call in Favours in the Flit into an always slet, but revised the payout for Revolutionary favours. This actually went through two changes, but has now been modified so that it scales with the player’s Renown: Revolutionaries, and awards some Suspicion, to balance the greater ease of doing this transaction.

- Renown for all factions is now capped at 55.

- Added an option to send the Freeloading Artist from your lab to fetch back some honey for your workers.

- Corrected error where it was possible to vote the Gondolier off the Board while having only 4 Board Members.

OUTFITS (added some missing points on 12 August)

- Hinterland Scrip is now visible on the sidebar to players who meet certain story progression quality requirements

- Contacts are once again visible in Account setting

- It's now possible to change outfits in the sidebar, without visiting the Possessions tab

- It's now possible to filter items by the qualities they enhance
outfits can be renamed

- Exceptional Friends get two extra outfits

- Additional outfits are available for purchase with Fate changes to outfits now need to be saved in order to persist

- There is a little copy of the player cameo on the Possessions page

reposting from the Discord since FBG hasn't done so:

8 October

• Meta text on July’s tooltip now states that she can serve on the board of the GHR.
• Help from the Board Secretary now allows gaining a second weekly GHR meeting until the player has built a station at Balmoral.

• Fixed some text when building track towards Balmoral that mistakenly described building towards the Evenlode.

• The end of a lab experiment no longer deletes your accumulated expertise of the First, Second, or Fourth Cities. Expertise of the Third City works as before.

Apologies - I should have posted these on Friday! 14 August 6.3.6
  • Fixed the Watchmaker’s Daughter story to use alternative tech for restricting outfit access, and reopened this content.
  • The Burial of the Dead and Fire Sermon dreams now have continuations. Once you have reached the end of their sequence, a new option allows you to relive them from a different perspective and explore previously-concealed options.

I'm a non-white person from a post-British-colonial country and while I'm of the opinion that in real life, colonialism was horrible and that a lot of stolen stuff sitting in European museums should be returned to their countries of origin, and that a lot of fantasy fiction and historical fiction by Western authors treats this issue far too lightly and disrespectfully, and I get that the Failbetter people are trying to do the right thing......... I also think changing the name of this item was kind of a waste of time.

I think the ideal change would have been to change the casually dismissive hovertext to the new version, which i agree is better, but not the name of the item.

For me, the original name of "outlandish" allowed it to exist in the fantasy bubble of FL because nobody actually uses that word any more; changing it to "unprovenanced" actually dragged in the real life issue of GIVE US OUR STUFF BACK DAMNIT in a disturbing way. The colonialists brainwashed us into thinking that Britain and especially England was some super cool awesome place. As a full grown adult I know that's not the case. But let me have my fantasy version of England, please.

Now if only we could have a new category called "Faction" for items used for Favours --> Renown/Connected conversion, put equippable items on a separate page from the rest of the inventory, get rid of the dropdown for changing outfits and just have a list of outfits to click on, add 1 more outfit called "Impressive" or something (meant for maxing BDR), and make it so the clickable list of item categories and the search box are available before I scroll down past my clothes and make it redundant to have a no-scroll option, anyway?

(Regarding the May 15th update, and many previous)

Thank you for keeping up the great work. At least in the Neath, 1898 has been nothing but a swell year so far, and all the great new stuff has provided much welcome joy and respite.

And I can't stress enough how much I appreciate the minute but wonderful quality of life improvements. The newly introduced inventory categories make a lot of sense and give me as a collector a lot of pleasure; with the subtle rebranding of some items into obviously matching categories, the whole Possessions tab now makes a lot of sense and is eye-pleasingly tidy and elegant.

And I'm incredibly pleased that you can now both equip and use the Starveling Cat (and the Ridiculous Hat, did this also happen just now or have I missed it in an earlier update?)

While the Cat may be a terrifying menace few people might want to equip for a prolonged period, the functionality is very cool and might allow for some great opportunities down the line.

So anyway (and tl;dr): thank you very, very much for all your delightful work. Stay safe and healthy, and continue helping us share the Neathy refuge!

15 January

- Completing a heist on the Circumspect Envoy’s townhouse now grants some Shadowy change points.
- Doubt Street changes:
-The various Doubt Street opportunity cards have been retired.
- Players with certain endgame traits will now find new branches in various Doubt Street storylets which allow them to gain more of a specific type of copy.
- Rewards for the standard newspaper editions (and the Seditious Edition) have been drastically reduced but now scale with the amount of copy you have accumulated.
- Rewards for the ‘masterwork’ newspaper editions have been slightly reduced.
- A new type of edition is available, which requires investigating rumours about the Bone Market; this can be done in Veilgarden or through the opportunity card ‘A Public Lecture’.
- Whirring Contraptions at the Bazaar Side-Streets now cost 120 Phosphorecent Scarabs, 24 Memories of Light. (Was 300 and 60)
- Cover Identity: Ties is now a Circumstance.
- A new proposal before the board is available if Sinning Jenny is part of the GHR board.
- The Cabinet Noir options to build Backstory have been slightly buffed in order to better reflect the action costs involved, and an extra branch has been added to cash in an especially large number of Pawns at once.
Casing in Parabola has been adjusted; now gives 28 change points (was 50).
- The Clay Highwayman’s story can now make an appearance in the Hinterlands.
- Post-release adjustments to the Clay Highwayman:
- Larceny cards had their value adjusted
- Fixed a bug causing errors when trying to draw the same card across both facets of the Clay Highwayman’s camp
- Added a card that triggers on Banditry 8 in the Upper River, for players who cannot get captured by the Clay Highwayman
- Added a post-story version of the Clay Highwayman’s opportunity card
- New options have been added to the cards ‘Respectable Passengers’ and ‘A Disillusioned Fungiculturalist.’
- A new proposal before the board is available if the Widow is part of the GHR board.
- The Pink-Painted Cat has been given a Dangerous stat, to reflect the fact that it is probably somewhat peeved about its ongoing state.

Will the success outcome for "Sponsor a trading voyage to the farthest reaches of the zee" (from the storylet 'Aspiring Zee-Captains' in The Blind Helmsman) be adjusted to give two Whirring Contraptions instead of one? Since Contraptions were patched to be cheaper to buy in the Bazaar Sidestreets (and since Wilmot's End now gives two per carousel instead of one), a change to this outcome reward would make sense.

I sometimes invest my excess Prisoner's Honey with this storylet, but if it's going to still give just one Contraption, it's no longer cost-effective compared to Wilmot's End or the Sidestreets.

23 October 6.4.3

  • Increased Moonlight requirement for Luminous Painting in Balmoral for better economic balance.
  • Added a new opportunity card to the Upper River deck, which adds more uses for Sworn Statements and Cover Identities.
  • Fixed a bug with renaming Newspapers and other qualities that was rejecting acceptable names rather than accepting them.
  • Using Special Dispensations to avoid going to jail while in the Upper River will no longer clear your deck.
  • A certain councillor’s vote is now correctly cleared after a successful vote in the GHR board.
  • Renamed the quality for a note you pick up at a certain laboratory to start with ‘Collection Note’ to make it easier to search for on the Myself tab.

January patch notes, taken from Reddit:

January 7
- Added a branch to the Calendrical Confusion of 1899, allowing players who missed the Empress' Pronouncement to read the speech and obtain the commemorative wine.
- Added a unique header image to Station VIII on the railway
- Restricted the storylet “Pass the Cat: An Unwrapping” to Your Social Engagements (previously universal)
- Naga Advertising Agency: Added a secondary payout in Glim to the Sterling’s Solar Hearth campaign

January 14
- Removed the Fate ‘CENSORED’ option from Day ‘CENSORED’ in the Iron Republic - having more than had its day.
- Changed the cards granting the rare pets (Haunted-Looking Dog, Rubbery Euphonium and Salt Weasel) to have purple borders.
- Added meta text clarifying that the Trifling Diplomat doesn’t benefit from Zoological Manias.
- Added special storylets to open the Bazaar in the Upper River, Khan’s Heart, and Rat Market. Those storylets are meant to more directly tutorialize that those areas have unique exchanges.
- The Calendrical Confusion of 1899:
- Adjusted the amount of wines gained when purchasing wine. Now gives significantly more Greyfields 1879 (scaling with base Persuasive) and Strangling Willow Absinthe, but only has a 50% chance of generating a Bottle of Greyfields 1868 First Sporing.
- Checking in with Revolutionaries now produces less Incendiary Gossip.

January 21
- Watchful checks on the Shifty Student’s card are now correctly affected by Research Preparations.
- Fixed an issue where some variant ways to start building the Jaguar Blade did not correctly set Total Lab Research Required or enable Parabolan Methods.
- The tutorializing storylet Explore the Upper River Exchange now only appears in Ealing.
- Added metatext to the Urchin War clarifying which end of the Balance of the Urchin War each faction favoured.

9th July
  • Fixed a condition where some players weren’t able to visit Corpsecage Island during the appropriate step in Heart’s Desire.
  • Helicon House: Added alternate exit option that favours Hand-Picked Peppercaps rather than Solacefruit.
  • Fixed and issue allowing players to reclaim The Inescapable Ubiquity of your Countenance without rebuilding all your statues.
  • Khanate:
    • Buying lightbulbs in the Graphite Quarter is now 250 bulbs for 45 Khaganian Coinage (was 50 and 5).
    • Sped up the Taimen’s Attention decay rate.
    • Removed an erroneous Shadowy check from the Trifling Diplomat’s skeleton sale branches.
      • The Diplomat never had a failure condition for those checks, he just always buys the skeleton. But the checks were left in by mistake.
  • Laboratory:
    • Starting a new research project or experimental stage should now always correctly set Total Lab Research Required and Total Parabolan Research Required.
    • Gaining Lab Research or Parabolan Research will now display a progress bar towards the target value.
      • The target is set based on the minimum required to complete the current experiment, so in some cases you may want to go over ‘100%’.
      • If you started your current experiment before this feature was fully implemented you may not see a progress bar until you start a new experiment.
    • The Numismatrix now has something to say about Khaganian Coinage and Fourth-City Echoes.

- Taking a crate of Incorruptible Biscuits in ‘Intervene in a Dockers’ Brawl' no longer requires having started a railway.
- Cave-Aged Codes of Honour can now be sold at the Bazaar.
- M. Demeaux' Advice for Captains, Second Edition and Commemorative Edition, now grant +4 Watchful/Dangerous (was 2)
- A Return to Terra Firma:
-- The storylet no longer requires a maximum level of zeefaring, as it was possible to inadvertently lock it by equipping +Zeefaring items.
-- The branch to create Cartographer’s Hoards from Cartography items is now also accessible from it in addition to the use storylet for Salt Steppe Atlases.
-- Having the quality An Experienced Zailor now hides the option to raise Zeefaring, and An Experienced Zailor is no longer show in the requirements for this option. This is intended to prevent new player confusion about a retired quality that is no longer obtainable.
- Updated text associated with the Russian Controller to clarify their identity.
- Added distinguishing art to some of the travel branches at the early Railway stations.
- Added ‘available at’ text to Mortifications of a Great Power.

- Further adjusted “Directing your Team” to make it easier to maximise. Now considers just your number of assistants and the highest-quality assistant among them; also, having only 3 assistants is now 85% as good as having 4 (was 75%). The ceiling for resource-spend options has been raised. Non-resource-spending options have been tuned down, but many players should still see increases depending on their lab setup, if they didn’t have an ideal lab assistant setup.
Some interesting highlights:

Circulate a draft of your findings : WORSE. Unexpected Result are worth less the more you cash in, and depreciate quicker on shorter projects (they quickly drop to about +7 per Result, and lower if you cash in more than 50, but with an Impossible Theorem even 100 Results at once still pays out about +8.5 per Result). It's still a good one-time boost if your lab keeps spitting out Unexpected Results, but not as powerful as it was before (down 8-40%, perhaps).

Directing your team : BETTER. Using an Unexpected Result on the top option now pays out quite well: 38 Research with 4 assistants/9 equipment, or 29 Research with 3 assistants/7 equipment. This buff curiously also applies to the Visionary Student's Leave your students to their own devices option, so that's a definite winner.

- Rat Market:
-- Selling a tier 6 item now grants 900 rat-shillings. (was 870)
-- Selling a Fourth-City Echo now grants 200 rat-shillings. (was 250)
-- Leaving with rat-shillings in hand is no longer forbidden. Instead, entering the rat-market for the first time each week will start a living story that turns all your rat-shillings to the equivalent amount of rostygold after 72 hours.
- Dealing with your Screaming Map should no longer hang around your lodgings indefinitely once you have in fact dealt with your Screaming Map.
- Tweaked a branch on Confessions in the Stone to avoid duplication with a branch elsewhere.

  • University Laboratory:
    • A new experiment has been added for players who have high Monstrous Anatomy and have completed the fish, amphibian, and bird books.
  • Bone Market:
    • Palaeontological Fads is now a hidden quality.
      • Most uses of this quality are being retired, but it still randomizes some text in a few slets.
    • The three buyers that depended on Palaeontological Fads (Constable, Enthusiast in Skulls, Enterprising Boot Salesman) are no longer accessible.
      • This is not the last you have seen of them; but they will be reworked before they come back.
    • Buyers who appreciate Menacing skeletons now require that the skeleton have at least one point of Menace. This also applies to Amalgamy and Antiquity.
  • An Exceptional Library
    • Where the first “proper” card of an EF could previously be played anywhere in London, and it is practical to do so, these have been moved to An Exceptional Library, to avoid clutter for players who have previously played the “unlock” card.
  • Tech:
    • If you have only linked one authentication method (that is, one of Facebook, Google, Twitter, or email/password) to your Fallen London account, you’ll now be reminded of this every few weeks by a pop-up inviting you to link a second method in order to avoid losing access when certain large technology companies experience prolonged, unexplained service outages. (The pop-up contains an option to banish it forever, albeit on a per-device basis.)
    • The front-end will now warn you if you’re trying to give an outfit the same name as one of your other outfits. (It’s never been possible to have duplicate outfit names, but the app failed silently until now.)

  • Using Mithridacy to examine a Disquieting Missive now correctly increases Mired in Mail.

30 October 6.4.4

- The Hallowmas cards tied to each mask – The Crown’s Splendour, The Devil’s Gambit and The Flight of Moths – are now roughly twice as likely to appear.
- The Buccaneering Palaeontologist should now unlock the option on the card ‘A Public Lecture’, like their un-upgraded counterpart.
- Trading in Criminal favours at the Flit is now more rewarding.
- The options to obtain a Human Ribcage or several Human Arms by calling in favours now have meta text warning that this is not useful if you don’t have a use for them in mind.
- Spending a Church favour on the Alluring Accomplice’s companion card is now more efficient.
- The options on the card An Implausible Penance have been made substantially more powerful.
- Slightly increased the value of the Dean’s statue at Jericho Locks.
- Increased the value of the Widow and Clay Highwayman statues at the Magistracy of the Evenlode.
- A new story has been added to the University, which adds more uses for very elaborate cover identities and Halcyonic Tonic.
- Several new options have been added to Helicon House, including a new branch in the basement and a new area to explore.
- Attempts to buy a Final Breath from an old man at the bone market now return to the originating storylet so that it’s possible to buy from him repeatedly.
- Qualities in the sidebar are now correctly organised by category.
- It is no longer possible to select an Exceptional outfit (thereby causing the game to hang indefinitely) when your Exceptional Friendship has lapsed.

- Brightening the Station VIII lighthouse now correctly lowers Advancing the Liberation of Night.
- Greatly increased the rewards from the statue of Sinning Jenny at Ealing Gardens, and slightly increased the rewards from the statues of Virginia, Feducci, and the Jovial Contrarian.
- Various options on the card ‘A Gift from the Capering Relicker’ have been slightly increased.
- Various lines of text about the Rubbery Yes-Man have been changed.

In last week’s patch notes, we mentioned that we had increased the value of the statue of The Last Constable at the Magistracy of the Evenlode. As players are aware, there is no statue of The Last Constable. This was content we considered and began building, but decided against making live for myriad reasons. In preparation for the balance changes later this month, we’ve begun buffing elements of the game, and due to a miscommunication, this was included, and then reported as a change. We apologise for any confusion caused.

again, reposting from Discord:

16 October 6.4.0

• It is now possible to sell a cover identity you’re not keen on in your Cabinet Noir and start a new one, if it has at least 5 points of Elaboration.

• Relying on Sinning Jenny at a board meeting now reduces Credit with the Headmistress, so that those who had a great deal of Credit will not always receive her acquiescence to everything.

• On rare visits to Helicon House, it is now possible to meet and converse with the Salesperson in Viric.

• Obtaining skeleton parts at the woods in Balmoral is now less efficient.

• We have restructured the Fate page to make it easier to use. There are now categories for gameplay, stories and story resets. We've added search functionality and further details about the stories such as featured people and places.

• Trailers for selected premium stories can be seen in some areas.

• You can now remove the Hell-Scarred Gondolier from the Board, which will restore his card to the Upper River.

• If you have no Criminal Record when arrested in the Upper River, you are given the same punishment you would in the same situation in London.

• Using Special Dispensations to avoid jail in the Upper River is slightly more beneficial: you can avoid increasing your Criminal Record, but it will get expensive to keep doing so.

I can take it once just to read what she has to say, but I won't repeat it... because I can reliably get Rumours from the Upper River just by going by train back and forth between Ealing and Jericho at 1 Rumour / Action and without extra cost.

My Shadowy is 128 with Equipment but that only amounted to an 8% success chance, as a result my Suspicion hit 8 and then going to prison (again) kicked it all the way up to 10.

Your skeleton's self-evident implausibility was too high. That shadowy challenge is based on it.

28 August 6.3.9
  • Added a lab experiment to research sharks and other fish.
  • Bazaar items now have more detailed alt text.
  • The Fire Sermon has been adjusted so that players should not get locked out of getting a sufficiently high level of Seeing in Apocyan for the related dream content.
  • A dream about a dreadful bargain will now zero out the correct dream quality, and not that of Burial of the Dead.
  • An opportunity card to reduce your In Corporate Debt when it’s too high now appears more reliably.

A bumper edition this week!

4 September 6.3.10

  • We have made visible some options on the Jurisdictional Dispute card that were otherwise invisible unless the player had the Very Teeth of St George

  • Players can now keep Palaeontological Discoveries after their first dig to spend them on a later occasion.

  • Peppercaps are now a Sustenance item.

7 September

  • After the player’s first encounter with the inhabitant of the bottom of the Magistracy, repeated encounters no longer act as a shortcut to get out of diving.
  • A branch to plan building across a ravine was erroneously shown as becoming available when the railway next goes forward. This branch has been hidden.
  • Reduced prices for digging in the Magistracy of the Evenlode on two branches in order to make costs more consistent.
  • Added an option at Magistracy of the Evenlode to prove your allegiance to the Prehistoricists before speaking to the Tracklayers' secretary, if you have supported them exactly 50% of the time.

11 September

  • Reduced somewhat the amount of Casing… provided by your Morally and Physically Flexible Rubbery Cat at Helicon House, and increased the number of treats it must be given.
  • Removed the cap on receiving Estimable Trophies when going on hunts with Sophia’s club.
  • Made the return of the Honey-Mazed Bear always available in Ealing Gardens when you possess the bear, rather than requiring a wait to draw the card.
  • Corrected an error whereby the Dean of Xenotheology cost 0 Actions to speak to at Helicon House, in contrast with all the other characters who can appear in that location.
  • Revised dividend payouts at the Great Hellbound Railway to be somewhat more generous. Further edited the board process so that Railway owners with a worker-ownership charter will encounter no objections from Labour supporters when voting for dividends, but the amount of the dividend will be slightly higher if you have a non-worker-ownership charter.

- Additional quality level texts are now applied to following qualities:
- Meals Served at Station VIII
- Connected: Fingerkings
- Small feedback responses focused on the Bone Market:
- Failing to sell to a particular buyer now links back to the same storylet to try again
- Trying and failing to duplicate the Vake’s head now produces a spare Vake-tooth
- The Femur of a Surface Deer can be sold to the Bazaar

Is there any way that our maximum number of contacts can be increased in the next patch? With all of these gift exchanges, I'm frequently hitting the 200-contact limit, and it's tedious to repeatedly prune my contact list.

This is especially problematic when someone adds you as a contact, which automatically adds them to your contact list as well, taking up space there.

I also thought the old description was fine, we knew it was an obvious joke and not to be taken seriously, and I like some ironic joke. But I more or less agree with PJ, no longer calling them "outlandish" goes a long way. Also I love that the new description can also work as a funny callout for the playerbase and their hoard.

Whoops.

I'm a white American (albeit Jewish), so I probably shouldn't really be saying anything here, but I feel like if you want a game that escapes the crimes of the British Empire, Fallen London isn't one of those. While there isn't homophobia, sexism, and a different kind of racism*, Fallen London still feels like Victorian England. The Port Carnelian is specifically modeled on colonial Singapore, and if you side with the Tigers in Sunless Seas, you're said to be supporting the "aboriginal's peoples claim." The Neddy Men and the Battle of Wolfstack Docks is basically how many early labor strikes went down. I could go on, but basically almost every inequality from our world is depicted in some way. No one is really the good guy, per se. In my mind, they're just being consistent by more directly acknowledging the Victorian era "archaeology" that has always been implied to exist.

*We see many dark skinned people in positions of power, like the Dark Speckled Admiral, and no one comments on that. But London doesn't like Khangians or Presbyteratians, so I guess it's more like xenophobia.

I agree to some degree, but on the other hand we live in an era where irony is commonly used for plausible deniability and dogwhistling. As such, I don't mind them replacing the sarcastic praise of putting pillaged artifacts in museums with something a bit more blunt.

I felt the change in the text was misplaced for an entirely different reason: it is out of step with every other description in the game.
The other ironic descrptions are an insight into the head of a Londoner encountering the items. This is why they are delicious; you get the implication a second too late.
This description is heavy-handed, too modern and instead of subtly horrifying you, tells you how you should feel. Plus it seems to come from a different narrator than every other item.
I appreciate the sentiment and the changes, but shouldn't they stay in the FL style?

The Heist seems to be a regular Triple-Bolted one. I haven't come across any special cards. The player will be using the coins to gain access to the University Laboratory; Correspondents won't need the coins.

By the way, you can check the wiki for the results of the Heist. I have made the pages for it.

  • Several sources of Estimable Trophies now pay out more than they used to, and in particular the Pinewood Shark offers six Trophies rather than one.
  • A new activity can now be unlocked at the Blind Helmsman after reaching A Name Scrawled in Blood 7, which also allows for changing Identified with a Tradition:
  • Researching a Pinewood Shark skeleton at the Laboratory now yields 38 Fin Bones and 500 Bone Fragments (was 3 and 0)
  • An additional Deciphering option is available to Cabinet Noir owners in Balmoral
  • A new quality, Fabricator of Past Lives, tracks the Cover Identities you’ve made and sold
  • Several changes make the Station VIII kitchen more flexible about ingredients:
    • The Deep-zee Catch is not required for simple soups, but can be added to soups to make them more valuable
    • Serving your concoction at the Station VIII kitchen now pays out entirely in Hinterland Scrip
    • Possessors of the Canny Costermonger can trade their culinary concoctions for more fresh fruit
    • Possessors of Dr Schlomo can trade their culinary concoctions for Identity Uncovered!
  • Fixed issue where An Exemplary Work of Lapsarian Theological Art couldn’t be used in the Upper River.
  • A new quality, A Historian of the Neath, tracks the Monographs you have published at the Moulin institute.
  • Two new items, the Misplaced Ring and Anning’s Patent Ribcage Breastplate, have been added to the Upper River market.

11 December 6.4.12

- It should no longer be possible to get to 0 Time Remaining at Helicon House without actually leaving.
- Grabbing biscuits on the way out of Helicon has been adjusted slightly down; now gives 5 crates of biscuits (previously 6) and 4 venison marrow (previously 2).
- The statue of Sinning Jenny now gives an additional 3 thirsty bombazine scraps and a lower-value bundle of oddities which will no longer generate nothing but Blemmigan Secretaries. The statues of the Clay Highwayman and the Gracious Widow have been similarly adjusted.
- Fixed an issue causing the option to build the Statue of Southwark to take away the old, exponentially-scaling amount of Hinterland Scrip even though it only required the new, linear-scaling amount.
- You can now send a Christmas Card from your Social Engagements, rather than your Lodgings.
- Whisper-Satin scraps now no longer take a Favour to upconvert, and Thirsty Bombazine now takes a Favour to upconvert.
- Map gate storylets with many branches (e.g., SNOWBOUND!) no longer overflow on wide screens.
- Beginning a dive in the Magistracy basement now requires Nightmares < 6 and Wounds < 6 (was 1 and 1).

Very delayed batch of patch notes, apologies! Neathmas ate them and I found these as I was putting away the tree cadaver.

18 December 6.4.14

- The meta text for attaching albatross wings to a skeleton now reflects that it’s harder to do so convincingly if it already has tentacles.
- Meta text for attaching a Holy Relic of St Fiacre is more precise.
- The Licence to Amend Your Face is usable again (and changing your cameo multiple times no longer requires refreshing the page).
- Changing your name now updates your name and Fate totals correctly.
- Social act quality requirements are now listed more clearly.
- The value of some options on the cards ‘Intervene in an Attack’ and Engage in some Minor Smuggling’ has been adjusted upwards.
- Resolved a missing cost of Cryptic Clues on the failure result for Pursuing a Case of Books in the Bazaar Side-streets

22 January 6.4.18

- Oneironaut, Unbishop, and other “Tier 4” professions are no longer listed as possible values in the Professions quality information text, as these are not possible to achieve and are not scheduled for future implementation.
- Bone Market buyer cards no longer list a card frequency; that they did so was a holdover from a time when they were opportunity cards.
- In some circumstances, a player could have appointed a lackey of Mr Fires to head the Tracklayers' Union, but not to be able to use his services at a later occasion when it should have been possible. This bug has been fixed.
- The Cabinet Noir now accepts Moves in the Great Game as a way to build backstory.
- A new branch has been added to the Museum of Souls allowing players to trade for a certain rare item.
- More detailed hints are now provided for players who are stuck on searching for Furnace at Station VIII.
- Sinning Jenny and the Bishop of Southwark received additional comments to make about different station plan votes.
- Light and darkness cards at Moulin, Burrow-infra-Mump and Balmoral are now discardable.
- The opportunity to accept a board proposal at Moulin from the Wandering Gondolier is now not only locked but invisible for players who do not possess the Wandering Gondolier; this is to prevent confusion for players who instead have the Hell-Scarred Gondolier.
- Fixed a missing luck roll at the Museum of Souls.
- Changed the icon on Palimpsest Scraps.
- Clay Highwayman Larcenies:
- Stealing tier 7 items now requires Darkness on each respective card’s station.
- Stealing other items no longer requires Darkness.
- Trading Collated Research for Time Remaining in the Woods in Balmoral now gives 5 time remaining for 4 research (was 4 and 3).
- This change is specifically aimed at making the option to generate On the Scent by spending Thirsty Bombazine a little less efficient and generally keeping mammoth ribcage generation in Balmoral within band.
- Strong-Backed Labour is now much cheaper in the Clay Quarters and Bazaar Side-Streets.
- Emancipating Strong-Backed Labour gives similarly lowered rewards.
- Buying Crates of Expedition Supplies with Strong-Backed Labour now yields 3 crates (was 5).
- The valuation of strong-backed labour between London and the Hinterlands was very inconsistent, creating a big gradient that made the effective value of Church favours too high. This change is aimed at realigning them. It’s still dramatically more efficient to get SBL from the statue, but they are no longer exchangeable for Expedition Supplies at a rate that’s detached from their planned underlying value.
- Parties are now infinite draw with hand size = 3. Cards in parties are now sticky.
- The Nadir is now infinite draw with hand size equal to lodgings size.
- Two new cards allow for manipulating darkness in Burrow-infra-Mump and Balmoral.
- Once you have joined the Clay Highwayman’s gang, the option to join them to steal steel in London is now different (and marginally more efficient).
- Some variant text now appears when deciphering different documents in the Cabinet Noir; in addition, it is no longer implied that every dog in London is called Sugarplum.
- The Efficient Commissioner, in nightmares, now has a little extra optional dialogue about a recent item. (This is not required to unlock anything new.)
- Players with Red Colour at the Chessboard now have more options to change light and darkness in the upper river in either direction.
- Fate purchase payment now handles currency selection correctly.

18 September 6.3.12

- Adjusted the modeling option at Helicon House to require maximum 3 Time Remaining.
- Added option for people with a Pendant to enter Helicon House slightly later in the evening than everyone else, if they wish.
- Corrected an issue that made it impossible to see custom text for modeling with a companion at Helicon House (though the text did exist).
- Added a bonus for entering Helicon House with the Cultured Attaché/e, in line with the other Fate-locked companions.
- Adjusted accepting a commission at Helicon House so that it is no longer repeatable in the same evening, and so that it collects all of the player’s Inspired.
- Adjusted some post-Ambition options at Helicon House to give less Fascinating at a time, though a rare success is still better than one of the ordinary sort.
- Capped handout of second chance items at 12 on rare successes at Helicon House.
- Launched the new Unterzee map
- Fixed a bug with unresponsive deck refresh buttons at certain device widths

Thinner deck is nice. Thank you. Can I get a little greedy and request a way to stop seeing the Affluent Photographer? EDIT: Like maybe a "locked with: one of the mid tiered garments you get from that grind"

Could you, please, pin Pinnock's storylet somewhere? It's really annoying to see it everywhere when you don't need it.

This was meant to be posted Friday, apologies for the delay.

20 November

- The card ‘The Mechanics of Progress’ will no longer appear for players who have begun the University storyline.
- The card ‘The Soft-Hearted Widow’ now gives a slightly scaling amount of Making Waves.
- The harder choice on the card ‘One’s Public' has been made slightly harder, and slightly buffed.
- The card ‘A Past Benefactor’ now gives 1 CP of Someone is Coming.
- Modeling at Helicon House now pays out absinthe equal to 1/2 of Fitting In (Down from 2/3)
- Spending time with the Boneless Consort in Helicon House now correctly factors in Bizarre, as stated.
- Interactions in the Upper River that increase On the Trail of the Clay Highwayman now correctly cap the quality at 5.
- A new branch in the Balmoral kitchen now provides another way to get deer femurs.
- It is no longer possible to repeatedly inspire painters with Emancipationist dreams; this branch can only be played successfully once.
- Beatrice’s Tea Room may be revisited by players who have played relevant related content; they will find the route at their base-camp.
- Failing at painting a Moonlit painting in Balmoral now removes 2 points of Moonlit.
- Various issues with the scrip costs on buildings at Burrow-Infra-Mump have been corrected.
- Feeding the Sausage About Which No One Complains to the Tracklayers now correctly requires at least one Tracklayers' Displeasure, across all stations.
- Changed the meta text the branches to construct two of the Burrow statues.
- The card for the Memento Mori statue at Burrow-Infra-Mump now has its intended chance of a rare result (Was erroneously 3%).

Thank you for the update, and for cleaning up with the old cards.

Is there a way to get Doc Schlomo back? After all, he was quite useful at reducing nightmares, even for high-level-players.

And, just in case anyone wants one of her or his or its transports back, there´s a way through the parabolan lab to retrieve all of them.

I see that old seasoned stories (which required a step to unlock it) aren't in that said library. Technically, they are just unlocked. smile

I am ashamed to count them, but I can give you the qualities for the last 12 seasons! Big Grin

Further notice: season conclusions are found in the library too!

But insects have exoskeletons. They don't have bones, nor do they have thighs, so they certainly don't have thighbones.

So if St Fiacre's thigh is attached to a weevil, well clearly that's just a divine miracle. A miracle which can be in your own living room for a very reasonable price.

- Your Cabinet Noir now has improved explanatory text to clarify whether you are about to start an identity without any Ties, or about to start one with specific ties established.

- Mementos of Silence and Mementos of Violence can now be earned at the Chessboard and in Parabolan hunts, in addition to other sources through social actions.

- Renamed the old ‘Write Letters' storylet in Your Social Engagements to ‘Send a Message to a Contact’

- Merely adding someone as an acquaintance no longer grants Making Waves.

- Snubbing an acquaintance no longer affects Making Waves or Confident Smiles for either player.

- Reduced the Court of the Wakeful Eye tribute value for Strong-Backed Labour from 5 to 2.

- Installing Cornelius in place of Mr Fires' Lackey was not an available option in all the circumstances when it should have been available. This has now been adjusted.

- Parties:
- Tentacled Entrepreneur now grants 1-2 Rubbery Men favours (was 0-1)
- A branch on the Whiskered Admiral card now grants 1 Society favour
- These changes should make it much more consistent getting 1-2+ favours from the activity.

- Jericho:
- Adjusted the value of some Tributaries of Hell to make EV consistent across all of them; EV has been lowered across the board.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with Unprovenanced Artefacts is now less efficient.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with favours is now less efficient.
- The overall gain from spending Docks favours in Jericho should now be slightly worse than spending favours at a statue, though of course Jericho requires drawing fewer cards.
- Buying Esteem of the Guild with Incendiary Gossip or Collated Research is now more efficient, and doesn’t lose resources upon failing a check.

- The Pair of Balmoral Boots are now priced at 250 Hinterland Scrip to buy in the Upper River, and 125 to sell. This makes their value as a reward more in line with the value of other rewards given by Castellans at Balmoral.

- Historical items (Silvered Cat’s Claw, Rusted Stirrup, Trace of Viric, Unlawful Device, and Chimerical Archive) are now also their own category, Historical.

- Counter-Church items (Palimpsest Scrap, Apostate’s Psalm, Verse of Counter-Creed, False Hagiotoponym, and Legenda Cosmogone) have been placed in their own category, Theological.

- Adjusted the functionality and payouts of the Moulin Archaeological Institute:
- Buyers no longer pay out tier 1 items.
- Instead, they now pay out the full value of a monograph, split between different reward items according to the ratio between their ironic/cautionary/tragic values.
- All items now increase monograph value more.
- Monographs now have a greater starting value.
- Monographs that cost resources to start now have a starting value that reflects that cost.
- The ‘Expulsion of Roses’ monograph subject no longer requires ‘Closest to: Hell’
- Exceptional Monographs are now harder to achieve, requiring 7 Depth of Historical Study, no Incoherence, and some amount of all three tonal qualities (ironic, cautionary, tragic).
- The value for extra Exceptional Monograph rewards is no longer deducted from overall monograph value by buyers.
- Some buyers had their payouts changed, usually to give out more new-economy or upper river items.
- These changes are aimed at three things:
- Increasing the payout for the action cost of building a monograph to track the overall action EV of upper river activities.
- Increasing overall control over monograph payouts and the relevance of the reward mix to endgame players.
- Making it so exceptional monographs now require a mix of different inputs to generate.
- Making non-exceptional long monographs a reasonable way to convert large amounts of resources into other resources.

- Moulin Expeditions:
- Dying in the Moulin Waste no longer incorrectly zeroes the ‘A Route through the Moulin Waste’ quality.
- The storylet ‘Sort through the Loot’ now allows progress even with route = 0, so players who were affected by this can cash out Wages of a Dig and enter a new expedition.
- The Silk-Clad Expert’s card no longer incorrectly discards the player’s hand.
- Historical items rewarded by expeditions can now be sold for Echoes at the Bazaar; Nicatorean Relics, Traces of Viric, and Unlawful Devices can now be sold for scrip in the Hinterlands.
- Fixed the Proscribed Material reward from ‘Upper Layer’ expeditions being incorrectly calculated.
- Slightly tweaked the Nicatorean Relic payout from the ‘Across the Zee’ expedition; now gives a minimum of one relic instead of giving an extra one on top of the calculated value.

- It is now possible to appoint the Drummer to the Board without dedicating the Burrow Church to him in exchange for a False Hagiotoponym. (The price of appointing him if you have dedicated the Church to him remains the same.)

- The drink coffee card has been removed from the lab, since the 0 action entry and exit means it is no longer needed.

- For the same reason, the Plan Equipment Improvements for your Laboratory has been closed - since you can just dip into your lab to check, now.

- If you let your Irrigo get so high that you’re kicked out of the Nadir, you’ll no longer be able to Perhaps Not out of the exit card, so you should no longer be at risk of getting your stats drained twice.

26 March (belated)
  • Current Culinary Concoction is now a Circumstance, so it is described to players in terms of the name of the item needed rather than number.
  • An option on your Boneless Consort’s spouse card now allows players with Shapeling Arts to upgrade their Boneless Consort to a Companion in Amber. The Companion in Amber has +3 Bizarre, +1 Shapeling Arts, and has an opportunity card with upgraded value. It can still be brought along to Helicon House and other places where a Boneless Consort unlocked options. (Note that this option is available only if the player has at least one point of Shapeling Arts to start with.)
  • The Wry Functionary, Dauntless Temperance Campaigner, and Implacable Detective are now available as additions to your GHR board.
  • The help page has been updated to point to the new wiki.
  • Peculiar Treasure Heist: Going from ‘A Prize Achieved!’ to ‘A Treasure Uncovered’ no longer costs an action.
    • We’re keeping an eye on whether this increase in EpA will need adjustment, but for now rewards are unchanged

2nd July

- Added item use slets to the Salve of Righteousness, Distillation of Retribution, and Emetic Revelation.
- Added ‘Director’ as an Addressed As: title for players who have completed the Railway, and ‘Regent’ for players with a certain Ambition ending.
- Using Bone Market tools to reduce Menace/Antiquity/Amalgamy now raises implausibility more slowly, and will also lower a skeleton’s base value if it’s highly implausible. Implausibility gain from this option is now capped by the skeleton’s total number of parts.
- Parabolan Chessboard:
-- Finishing with even advantages/disadvantages now gives a Threefold Repetition + Well-Placed Pawns for the first two times, then exchanges those two Threefold Repetitions for a Stalemate + a Vital Intelligence
-- Stalemates were without a use for a very long time, so it was missed that the action cost to get one from the chessboard wasn’t balanced against the value they had been assigned. This change makes them reasonable to obtain given their 62.5e value.
-- Queen Mates, Epaulette Mates, and Stalemates can now be sold in the upper river.
- Balmoral:
-- Two new statues can be built in Balmoral. Like the existing one, they have no effect in themselves, but they allow obtaining the Amber Vision of the Sea of Spines without using any statues of yourself, for anti-narcissists.
-- It is now possible to tear down the statue you placed at Balmoral. As the statue itself has a lesser effect than others, this does not cost Fate.
- Khanate:
-- Renamed the ‘Fabricate compromising documents’ branch to reflect that it gives you Blackmail Material and not Compromising Documents.
-- Made the description of Taimen’s Attention more explicit.
-- Taimen’s Attention is now capped at 10, not 8. This makes some aspects of the Intrigue wheel slightly more challenging but is mostly about preventing confusion, as the quality is not a traditional menace.
-- Slightly decreased the amount of Infiltrating… needed to complete medium-difficulty schemes, down to 130 (was 140).
-- Modified some redundant branches in the Khanate to have a different cost, difficulty, and result.
-- The scheme to obtain a Corresponding Sounder now correctly costs 750 Infiltrating.
-- Scheme Complexity is now a visible quality.
-- Added a new storylet that allows spending certain items to make faster progress on long infiltrations, available only at the very start of a day.
-- Added an item use slet for Corresponding Sounders.
-- Fixed an issue where the Trifling Diplomat could give 0 exhaustion while granting large amounts of extra rewards.
- Zailing:
-- Added meta text to the description of Troubled Waters to explain how it is cleared.
-- Existing the unterzee through ‘Becalmed’ now correctly clears Troubled Waters.
-- Changed the tooltip text on Oneiric Pearls to no longer reference nightmares, as that was causing confusion.
-- Grunting Fen now requires the appropriate level of Embarking on a Voyage of Scientific Discovery.
-- Changed the reveal condition for Corpsecage and Bullbone islands to prevent players from being unable to progress through Embarking on a Voyage of Scientific Discovery.
-- Adjusted the tooltip for zailing to Port Carnelian.

  • Parabolan Hunts:
    • Fixed issues with “Parabolan Quarry: Amenable to Capture” not clearing correctly when existing a hunt through “Face the [quarry] in its [lair].
    • Reordered branches to ensure that giving up and returning to the base-camp is always the last option.
  • Added a min wound requirement to ‘Deal with your wounds’ at Wolfstack Docks.
  • Fixed issue in which some branches in ‘Read Incoming Mail’ didn’t link back to the root storylet.
  • Added certain item bonuses to all ships. These will not be relevant until the Zee Voyage update in late June.
  • Added “available at” tooltips for a few items: Legenda Cosmogone, Fragment of the Tragedy Procedures, Parabolan Parable, Magnificent Diamond.

9 April - A Memory of Discordance is now merely a Memory of Discordance - The account settings page rubric no longer refers to StoryNexus. - Category separators in the outfit quality filter dropdown should no longer go missing when the first quality in a given category is selected. - Opening your profile from the Myself tab should keep you logged in. - Links to specific journal echoes in a character’s profile should bring you to the echoes they’re linked to, instead of the most recent echo. - When logging in via Google fails unrecoverably, the login page now displays the information we can glean from Google about how this happened (which may help support tickets get resolved more quickly). - September has been given unique art.

8th October (Delay my fault, apologies)
- Bidding farewell to the Honey-Sipping Heiress should now only display options you qualify for.
- Drinking Lethean tea should now remove the Book of Red Murder, Violant-Winged Bat, Dream-Shadow of a Curator’s Vestige, and Dream-Shard of the Mirror of Knives
- Rat Market:
-- Tier 5 items can now also be sold 5 at a time, valued the same as tier 6 items.
-- Fourth-City echos can also be exchanged 5 at a time, but less efficiently.
- Nemesis: Rewards on the 'Visiting the Person who was your ___' cards now give an additional +1 Someone is Coming.
- Removed extraneous meta text from Treasure descriptions.
-- Most Treasures at this point have multiple uses, and these asides were not consistently included in every item description.
- Fixed an issue where Treasure items were not appearing on profile pages.

22 October
- Rat Market:
-- The text on branches for selling 5x tier 5 items now states the correct amount of rat-shillings (850).
-- Lowered the sale price of 1x tier 5 item to 200 rat-shillings (was 250).
--- The previous value made the premium on those items much better than other items when factored as part of an action loop, as you’d spend many more actions selling at the rat market, thus generating more additional value. This change should put all tiers of items roughly in line with each other, everything else being equal.
-- Lowered the sale price of 1x Fourth-City Echo to 160 rat-shillings (was 200)
-- Lowered the sale price of 5x Fourth-City Echos to 680 rat-shillings (was 700)
-- Selling 5x Fourth-City Echos now costs a single action (was 3)
- University Laboratory:
-- Many, many changes and additions. See https://www.failbettergames.com/perfecting-your-laboratory/
-- Building a rifle at the Laboratory is now an experiment with multiple stages. The first stage can be completed immediately for an Ancient Hunting Rifle, or progressed to the second stage for an Infernal Sharpshooter’s Rifle. The research cost for the second stage has been adjusted down to make up for the extra action.
- Giving the CVR 1000 Souls and 100 Infernal Contracts now grants only 1-2 Favours from a random faction, chosen between the Church, Constables, or Society.
-- Previously, the branch granted 4-5 Favours from all three factions, in addition to zeroing all Menaces. With the increasing value of Favours, it was possible to recoup more than the cost of taking this branch, which meant that this card trivialized Menaces entirely. This went against the original intent for this branch – that it was a costly but very effective way to get rid of all your Menaces.
- Jericho statues that granted Parabolan Research no longer do so. Instead, they now grant more Warm Amber and Whispered Hints.
- Using an Ivory Femur on Assemble a Skeleton now uses the correct icon.

- the Pair of Irrigo Goggles is now +8 Watchful / -1 Persuasive / -1 Bizarre (Was +6/-1/0)
