I rather like it, actually--even if the cycle did get stuck between Poor Edward and my aunt after a while. (Did I refresh a lot? Possibly.) I don't know that I like the new title as much, but I also realize that arguing against a candle down here is a losing proposition.
I will rather miss the deviless with the soulful eyes, though. (Yes, I said it.)

theirs the boat man in the cycle so I'm kind of sold though I hope she's in their as well because their all the new kind of graphic art style and itd be nice to see a more traditional one in their also she really fitted the theme of fallen London the new text is debatable but I kind of like it its more flare than gothic I concede but if that's the way they want to go edited by the old man on 11/29/2019

The characters are Your Aunt, the Boatman, Poor Edward (from Light Fingers), and the Decorated Ambassador (from The Garden Embassy, June 2019 ES).
I thought the Ambassador was an odd choice, since she only appears in that ES and nowhere else. The same perhaps can be said about Ed, but at least he's a memorable character with staying power in the community's consciousness.
I think I'd like to see more familiar characters instead, like the Jovial Contrarian, Mrs Plenty, or Virginia (who would be a nice replacement for the Deviless, and she's our current Lord Mayor).
That nitpicking aside, this is a welcome change.

Poor Edward gave me a start but I found it amusing.
I definitely feel like a number of other characters would be more recognizable than most of the ones there, and I personally would like to see Doña Villar, but that's just me~

I like the cycling characters. I never really got why the Deviless was the poster girl for the game since she's a pretty minor character. It fits better to give us a broad range of faces we'll see in London.

I was unpleasantly surprised because a) I got Edward who isn't a sight for sore eyes(and I haven't played Light Fingers) and b) I am not big on changes. But now that the shock has died down, it is nice to have rotating characters. I understand the ambassador got included to signal that there exists in London a diverse cast of characters in terms of skin colour, and maybe she was the only non-white character that had recent art? But I would much prefer the Detective or the widow, because they are recognizable, and Victorian. The Ambassador's flowery headdress is completely out of tune.
The red candle is an eyesore for me - I really, really hope it goes away after Christmass, since red candles are directly related to this period. Green or red gold would not ruin the colour scheme as this one does. edited by Jolanda Swan on 12/1/2019

I like the rotating portraits in general, I think the Ambassador was an odd choice. I think it would be cool to switch it out every month for the most up-to-date Exceptional Story.
I think it's a problem for the candle that it's on a transparent background. My browser puts it on a black or almost-white background depending on context. It looks moody and atmospheric on a black background, and inappropriately cartoonish on a white background. I'm not a designer, but most other favicons I see with transparent backgrounds have very sharp edges, while the candle has fading edges.

I'd love it if they used more characters from Exceptional Stories for the landing page. After all, every single ES has a gorgeous portrait made for it, which is then - in most cases - never used again. That's kind of a shame. I don't need to see common FL NPCs (like the Aunt, though her new portrait is cool) on the log in page, I see them in-game often enough.
A rotating display of the greatest ES portraits would be awesome! edited by phryne on 12/2/2019

Think we could convince them to add the professor from Tauroktonos? How much more London can you get than an intrepid explorer with vile insects preparing to hatch out of her eyes?
Or perhaps everyone's favorite Valkyrie? Or the Ebullient Undertaker, maybe? I loved her. edited by Siankan on 12/2/2019

I'm gonna be a dissenting voice and say that maybe you don't want Poor Edward to be the first thing a new player sees.

You think the front of him's bad, you should see the back of his head.
(Generally, I would not be the least surprised to see more of the wonderful ES artwork entering circulation, but I'm happy to see the Ambassador be the first, for some representation for Aboriginal women!)

I am guessing the deviless was more welcoming. Edward and the new aunt... Might really drive people away.

The change is in aid of the 10th birthday of Fallen London, which is coming up on 11th January!
The rotating faces will stay (and indeed be added to), but the golden logo and red candle are just for the birthday celebration period. We changed the text on the login page to refer to the birthday, too.
Maybe Ed is too jarring for a new player? We have some other faces that we'd like to add soon, including some mentioned here, but we thought this was a good start.

Depends. What I loved about FL is that it's beautiful and weird and the horror comes out of the blue. Ed telegraphs that horror. A newcomer might draw the wrong conclusions about the experience awaiting inside the game.
