I've invited a correspondant to my Orphanage but no response for some time. What happens if i cancel request, will i get orphanage points back?

No, I am afraid. It's better to look for people to invite in the forum threads or even ask beforehand with a cheaper social action.

There's a thread or two around of people who are willing to visit orphanages; these are helpful, though if the post is particularly old you may want to message beforehand and confirm the character is still available for such things.
N.B. I am a Correspondent and more than happy to speak to young ones.
