I am getting the notion that the dev team posts in Discord more, which coupled with the trend towards quicker communication might have shifted the balance.
I can follow neither though; the forums seem much better suited to the atmosphere and the in-depth discussion of the game's lore and peculiarities.

The biggest issue I have is that the forum can be easily (or not) used as an archive of events, ES and other major events.

Yes. Whenever I need help with a story, or an action, the forums are what comes up on Google Search. Plus they have other benefits: you can find someone if they put their profile in their signature, the people make an effort to be witty, conversations are easier to follow... I am guessing it's the easiest for newcomers, too. I hope the devs find the time to make some appearances here too.
