It makes about as much sense as me already being a level 13 Agitator without a candidate to agitate for.
Right now it seems like London is full of people throwing their weight around making sure others will back their candidate - whenever they bother to get around to choosing a candidate that is!

I wouldn't put it past Shoshana and Plenty to be working together in some sort of elaborate confidence scam. Heads or tails, the Carnival wins.
It is a little strange to see two Carnival themed candidates at the same time, but then the Carnival is a big part of London and it hasn't featured in the elections, like, at all. So, making up for lost time I suppose.

I kind of hope you're right. My character doesn't, but that's another matter.
Of course, there's a sense in which you could describe the last two mayors as confidence men, so I suppose it's not inappropriate to have it, as it were, out in the open.
Early prediction is that the Plenty v. Shoshana axis works in Virginia's favor. Split the opposition between two reasonably similar candidates, so both come out weaker. Beyond that, I'm with Anne: it seems very strange to see two candidates so closely connected, especially ones that were not (to my knowledge) really on anyone's radar. (I apologize if I've forgotten some impassioned campaign for Mrs. Plenty. I'm fairly certain I've not heard anyone mention Madame Shoshana.) Past years have had candidates from distinct positions with clear backing, which made for an interesting race. Right now, all I can call is that the devils will support their own. I hope that the actual election launch will bring us more information and differentiate the candidates more successfully.

The Contrarian himself is publishing lengthy diatribes both for and against each candidate, in contravention of electoral custom. It's important, he protests, that the electorate sees a range of views. Good old Contrarian.

Hurrah! I am pleased that Mrs. Plenty will be a candidate. She will be most excellent.
Today, a second candidate has announced; Virginia! As a devil and archaeologist both, she makes an excellent contrast with Miriam Plenty.
The third candidate is to be announced on Monday. I wonder if we will have three female candidates this year?

Madame Shoshana vs Mrs Plenty, ha! Let's see how that affects the atmosphere at the Carnival :P
I like her Election portrait a lot more than the old in-game pic!
I think she's the dark horse in this election. We have some knowledge about the other two candidates' pasts and affiliations. Shoshana has remained a mystery so far. I'm quite curious what her 'vision for London' will look like exactly! edited by phryne on 7/8/2019

Interesting choices. I'm not particularly excited by or opposed to any of these options. Leaning towards Virginia for now (in keeping with my support for last year's infernal candidate), though that may change once the campaigns get properly underway. In principle I like Shoshana fine, but I'm not sure she'd be a good fit for mayor. Same with Miriam, she's great and all but with her no-nonsense manner the prospect of her in government seems a bit tiresome. Virginia seems the most compelling prospect overall.
Incidentally, I must say the all-female lineup is rather a surprise.

I have to admit I'm not wild about the two Madams both running for mayor at the same time. I guess we'll see how similar they appear once the campaigning starts, but as people have stated they could easily split the vote and leave a devilish victory all but certain.

Oooh, that makes it more interesting! The Duchess then? And... Parabolan interference? Hell and Parabola featured pretty heavily in so many Exceptional Stories after all. Which leads me to the second question.
I am pretty sure Failbetter chose two people from the Carnival exactly because they have something in mind. The elections seldom reveal large chunks of lore, but then again last year's Neathmass had a whole beautiful storylet in the end (mechanic problems aside). So they might be trying something similar here?

Items will be available beginning next week. You can still buy them for Fate right now, but the free gift comes when you choose your candidate.

Well, first of all you get a free (and sometimes great) item once you choose your candidate. Then Flash Lays and Heists give you items at the end. And you can exchange extra Reputation for items, once you have reached peak career.

Eh, I understand that it seems funny building up reputation without a candidate, but it does make more sense to only choose a candidate the second week. You need to find out about them first and make an informed decision. As for Heists, I am looking for them too, but I remember them from last year. I can't imagine they deactivated them now, but I can't find them either.

I'm afraid that this will be my first Neathy Election, too. However, of the three candidates, I've had the most contact with Virginia, and have quite come to admire her. She is tenacious in pursuit of her goals, but honest (and honourable) enough to back off when beaten. Having defeated her at chess for very high stakes, I am delighted to say that she is keeping her bargain faithfully! For me, she has gone from adversary to opponent to respected acquaintance, which places her higher in my esteem than either the charlatan Madame Shoshana (whose predictions are literally no more accurate than a coin toss) or Mrs. Plenty (whose sale of "edible" rubbery lumps unsettles me more than anything in Hell)!
I'll hold off on a final decision until after I've seen what the campaigns hold, but I'm inclined at the moment to stick with the Devil(ess) I literally know.

Madame Soshana is the new candidate then! Lore-wise, this could open up all kinds of options. I admit I am kind of glad I don't have to think of real-world politics this time. Of these candidates, only Virginia is remotely popular in the way Jenny or Feducci was, which makes for a more interesting race. And given that Soshana works with Ms Plenty there are probably more shenanigans ahead. Onwards to the polls.
