How do I find what story or stories are current?
I feel bored to tears from lack of any stories going on, and the game seemed to suggest I can access some by using Tale of Terror in my posessions, but this has a red border and says I can't click it because I am currently in a story.
So, what story? Where? How do I find it?

By "currently in a story", the game just means that you're currently inside a storylet event so can't access the storylets tied to inventory items. Just hit "perhaps not" to back out and you'll be able to use it.

Yes, being in a storylet (i.e. having clicked on a card and then getting to possessions without resolving your card first) makes it impossible to use items - you can just swap your attire around. Playing the card or clicking perhaps not should be enough.
The story in Tales of Terror is the Fidgeting Writer, a great story that might just drive you mad - as a player, not as a character.
If you are out of stories at the moment try the grinds which open up more stories, like the Dilmun club.
