I've had one on my alt for a while now, and nothing of note has actually happened yet so I'm starting to wonder. I know at a certain point it literally eats, digests & excretes your soul multiple times- but apart from that does it actually do anything?
(Worth noting that I do pass it back and forth with my main periodically to raise UP and my alt's opportunity deck is prettymuch permanently locked up by black bordered cards I can't get rid of because some genius decided MMIDOS should take a full week to wear off.)

Nothing about Seeking will actively impact Fallen London unless you explicitly consent to it, and the Starveling Cat is no different. You will need Starveling Cats along the way, as you're already aware. It unlocks the cheapest and easiest way to raise Unaccountably Peckish in "Bats and Cats" in the Flit, which is not available your alt at the moment.
(Marsh-Mired takes time to wear off to balance the long beginning of the story and keep people from rushing through it. Seeking is a long fall into oblivion. Your character doesn't choose to Seek; it chooses the character. For the black-bordered cards, early on, it's best to just play the options, eat the penalty, and reduce your Unaccountably Peckish.)
Early on (through SMEN 9), you don't need to be raising your UP past 3. With a 3-card lodging, which can be obtained decently quickly with regular gameplay, you have three cards that can be taken up by black cards. If you have no Connected: Masters, then TWO OF BATS cannot show up, meaning you'll always have at least one opportunity card slot free. Even then, both ACE OF HUNGERS and TWO OF BATS have very cheap costs for reducing UP (10 Rostygold and nothing, respectively).
Through SMEN 16, you only need to raise UP to 5, and even then, all you need is to draw one of those two cards to avoid paying larger penalties. Assuming that all 3 card slots will eventually be filled by black cards, then there's only a 10% chance that you won't have one of those two in your hand, and from there, UP can be reduced down to 0 at minimal cost.

Woof, good thing that persuasive penalty doesn't stack.
Incidentally, it bugs me that the cat isn't a companion. If I'm gonna seek the name I wanna do it to the umpteenth degree (Starveling Cat assigned to all 4 companion slots, Torment Destiny even though I've already got the requisite candle, etc.). edited by Isaac Gates on 11/9/2018

The Starveling Cat can interact with your Grubby Kitten and certain Tigers to your detriment. It may be of some utility if your home is plagued by rats. edited by Lady Sapho Byron on 11/8/2018

IIRC, they were originally equippable, but then they became a usable item and had to be moved out of the equipment menu. Now that equipment items can be used, it should really be returned to Companions to keep the Parabolan Kitten company.

I've never been clear about why it matters that a Starveling Cat is Persuasive -3, since you can't equip it. Does anyone from FBG want to enlighten me on that point?
