New citizen, a question on Ambitions

Hello, I come by way of Sunless Sea and find Fallen London delightful. I have a probably common question, but I couldn't find the answer searching around.
Can I take an ambition, complete it, then take a new one on the same character? I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but I'm unclear if ambitions actually have an ending or are simply added to as the game goes on. I know there is an item you can buy for fate that lets you abandon one, and I know some people use multiple characters. I'm just curious if it's possible to do it all on a single character.

Well given that most ambitions are unfinished short answer is no. I've been sitting on a doomsday device as part of the "Bag a Legend" ambition for quite a while wondering when I'll get to use the damned thing- and the impression I've got skimming through this forum is: not to hold my breath.

The whole idea of Ambitions is that these are major, character-lifetime-spanning stories. Completing Light Fingers and then starting Nemesis because you suddenly discovered your brother has been killed and that's why you came to the Neath wouldn't make any sense. Also, as Mr. Gates has pointed out, the Ambition storylines are not completed. Word from Failbetter is that there is only one more update to go for each, but there is no word on when those updates might appear. It's been more than a year (I think) since the last updates, and that was after an even longer dry period, so (to borrow from Mr. Gates again) don't hold your breath.
