So, I got 3 clues (one each from the Princess, the Widow and the Duchess), but I do not see the option to gather more.

Are you unable to collect more than 3 clues?

I see I can advance their progress (currently up to 5-2-1)... does it benefit me in any way? Should I advance my chosen candidate?

What are the effects of betrayal? Do I just transfer progress from one candidate to another?

(And lastly, I would like to know the opinion of those who just chose to sell it all to the Mayor Contrarian, lol)

There are three clues, not more.

Maybe, for now there is no use for progress, other than betrayel and once for the ending(you need at least 3 Progrees from one fraction or no at all, you can betray you fraction later)

Betrayel: Loose all your progress of one faction, gain 1 progress from the one, you are sharing with, get a random confession.

I am a llucky one, who got 6 confession in the first two days. I upgraded the Judge and the Squad, got all clues, betrayed the widow for another confession and with that I should have enough Confession for the Majors Weapon(which requires 60 Favours-giving him one random confession=6 Favour)

Actually, betrayal only loses you 3 Progress. The Duchess had 4 Progress when I betrayed her, and her progress went to 1 as a result.

Also, betraying to the Contrarian is a terrible deal. It only gives two favour, where betraying to another faction gives one progress and one confession that can be turned in for six favour.
