The Forgotten Quarter: a vast wilderness of Fourth City ruins... and beneath it, older cities still. Treasures lie buried here, and the answers to questions centuries old.

Stock up on Supplies, complete your research and embark on a new archaeological expedition in the Forgotten Quarter!

Archaeologists at level 2 and above will find three new expeditions to pursue: some more arduous than others, and each with its own rewards.

Look for “Begin an Expedition in the Forgotten Quarter” to get started.

Words cannot express my delight in having an outright HEROIC character attempt to foil my own (distinctly non-heroic and quite megalomaniacal) character's schemes.

So, in lieu of words, I shall resort to a more appropriate vocalization for the occasion: MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Both the Chalcocite Pagoda and the Tomb of the Silken Thread end in Watchful checks that are pretty hard to fail - so of course, I tanked an alt's stats in an attempt to see some failure text.

The Chalcocite Pagoda Failure

The Tomb of the Silken Thread Failure
The reward for the fail-version of the Pagoda is 2x Antique Mysteries and 1x Magnificent Diamond. The reward for the fail-version of the Silken Thread is 1x Parabola Linen.
I think some enterprising folks from the Discord have put my findings on the wiki already, but the extra lore from the failures is interesting!

EDIT: As the expeditions currently stand, if your Watchful is over 100 it's impossible for you to see these alternate (admittedly slightly worse) results.

Anyone have EPA numbers? (Given Buccaneering autosuccess). This looks decidedly more fun than Tiger grinding, plus you get to stay in London.

Yes. The 30 supply one is the one to go for - the reward is 2 items worth 62.5 echoes each. The expedition takes 1 action to start, 1 action to finish, and as long as you can 100% the 3 progress challenge, it takes 10 actions to get to 30 progress.

(The strategy to go for seems to be taking the 3 progress action for the first 8 actions and the final action, and the 2 progress action for the second-to-last action if you never find A Sign , the 1 progress action for that action if you encounter A Sign, and you save an action if you encounter A Sign twice, which should happen about 8% of the time)

The cost of this expedition is 29 crates (as the first progress is free), minus whatever you save from A Sign. There are 9 chances for A Sign to save you 4 crates, and 1 chance for A Sign to save you 3 crates. Each Sign has a 5% chance, for a total average savings of (9*.05*4) + (.05*3) = 1.95 crates. Thus the average cost of the expedition is 27.05 crates and 12 actions.

Now we have to calculate the cost of the crates. Assume no docks favors (because these are not reliable), and instead assume that the crates are gained by getting Strong Backed Labor in the side streets (for 13.5 echoes and 1 action per labor, plus 1 action to convert the labor into 5 crates). This makes each crate cost 2.7 echoes and .4 actions, and so getting the 27.05 crates costs 73.035 echoes and 10.82 actions

The expedition then takes an average 10.82 actions (for the crates) plus 12 actions (for the expedition itself) for a total of 22.82 actions.
The expedition reward is 125 echoes worth of items, minus the average 73.035 cost of the crates needed, for a total of 51.965 echoes profit
51.965 echoes divided by 22.82 actions gives 2.277 EPA, making this one of the most profitable grinds in the game.

As a side note this also makes docks favors considerably more valuable - 1 docks favor 1 action and 1 echo (assuming you buy rostygold wholesale) gives you 4 crates - 4 crates being worth 10.8 echoes and 1.6 actions. Deducting the cost, this makes the favor worth 9.8 echoes and .6 actions, and plugging in a conservative estimate of 2.277 echoes per action gives a value of 11.16 echoes per docks favor.

Edit: These values are not quite exact - they ignore the slight diminishing returns to signs after the second, which would reduce the epa slightly (although the chances of getting more then two signs is very low), but they also ignore the roughly 8% chance of getting 2+ signs and saving an action. If anything the actual EPA is probably close to 2.28

Adding a Dock Favour doesn't raise the actual EPA though, because you're effectively measuring two different grinds at once.

Say that, each expedition, you get 28 of your supplies from labour and one from Docks favours. If you do that 29 times, you'll get that 2.08 EPA on average. However, you've just done the equivalent of 28 expeditions using only labour plus one expedition using only Docks favours. You're better off ignoring the labour-based grinding completely once you can afford enough Orphans, and supplementing it with Docks favours when possible.

Good point on the conflated grinds but it doesn't change my main point, viz., pursing the Tomb of the Silken Thread with labour supplemented by favours (in whatever combination), is better than labour alone.

The Orphan grind does yield a better EPA ... but for those of us who are willing to sacrifice some EPA efficiency in exchange for not having to leave the pleasures of London, then this kind of archaeology is an excellent avocation.

It sounds like the Sanctuary of Crimson Petals expedition simply has two different results, one of which may be more common than the other. If the game was presenting different results based on whether you've done the expedition or not, we would expect to see it assign some quality to the player, since that's usually how the game tracks things like this. Plus, the fact that both outcomes have been reported by people apparently doing the expedition for the first time suggests it's a matter of random chance rather than a deliberate skew. Whether the odds of the different outcomes are roughly even (like the Thieves' Cache expedition having 60/40 odds of giving Glim/Souls) or one outcome is much rarer than the other will take more investigation.

Interestingly, I haven't heard any reports of alternate rewards for The Chocolate Pagoda or the Tomb of the Silken Thread, so those may be more consisent.

I will add that it feels sorta... fundamentally off to me that these expeditions don't give Unpredictable Treasures like the other two do. I miss those overpriced bags of oddites, dangit...
It's interesting that the results seem to change after the first time; it remains to be seen whether the other expeditions also give such useful items.

Here's a recalculation of EPA:

9.75 actions to acquire 9.75 favours. (I'm ignoring the cost for the moment. Because you only spend 39 supplies, you don't need the full 40!)
9.75 actions and 487.5 rostygold to turn those into 39 supplies.
1 action to start the expedition.
13 actions of buccaneering to get to the end of the expedition, ignoring "A sign?" and rivals.
1 action to complete the expedition.

Total: 34.5 actions

Reward: Either 3 night-whispers (187.5E) or two bright brass skulls and a portfolio of skulls (132.5E). It's not clear what the ratio is, but let's say 50-50 for now, for an average of 160E. Subtract 4.875 for the rostygold spent on supplies and that's 155.125E.

155.125/34.5=4.50 EPA. "A sign?" improves this slightly. The cost of favours makes it slightly lower. Notably, this is not a grind in the classic sense because you're limited by favours.

What about the risk of getting caught by your rival? Using the binomial probability formula with a 50% chance of Rival's Progress increasing, it's 13.3%. That's definitely not negligible. 3 echoes of romantic goods and 1 supply are required. There's still a 1.1% chance of having the Heroic Archaeologist catch up again, but that's rare enough that I'll leave it out.

This also costs only 39 supplies, barring rivals and signs, and you get 40 to prepare. Between the two you'll come out very slightly ahead on supplies, but again, not so much that I think it's important to calculate exactly. Overall you'll get well over 4 EPA.

What about making this a grind? The obvious way is by using money to fund expeditions. At 10 echoes for 4 supplies, though, your profit is 160-100, or 60 echoes for the expedition. That's actually not terrible, but 60/35 will give you about 1.71 EPA, which is reasonable but not exciting.

A little back of the envelope scribbling:

So far, posted rewards from the 40-supply Sanctuary have values of 12.50, 140.5, 187.5, and 187.5 Echoes. So mean return (I know, small sample size!!) = 132E.

    Actions needed are:
10 to get 10 Docker Favours (cost for this is variable)
10 to trade 10 Docker Favours for 40 Supplies (cost for this is 5E)
    1 to begin the Expedition
13 to do the Expedition (assuming automatic success and you don't need to foil your rival)
    1 to finish the Expedition

    Total = 35 Actions

EPA = (132-5)/35 = ~3.63!! ... or a little less, depending on what Dock Favours cost.

    Is this right?!?!

Isn't the EPA for grinding the items for the cheap option abysmal enough that it's less efficient? Say if you want a self-sufficient grind and don't want to invest any of your current items directly; using, let's say, Urchins you can get echoes at, say, just over 2.1EPA, which means 6.4 actions per Labour (not counting the action to actually buy it). For the Clay Quarter option, just getting the rostygold and moonpearls alone (4E of the price) using Unfinished Business will take 3.6 actions on average, so unless there are grinds that give you 6E in Idenitites and Documents within 2.8 actions, it's already less efficient.

I usually trade Urchins favors to Hell or the Widow. The Hell conflict card has that nice scandal reduction (which I'm always in need of), and the Widow one scales well with total favors and is reasonably profitable at 7 urchins favors.

25 Certifiable Scraps, which is important if you're trying to get top tier items from the Relickers. Also, this keeps my HOJOTOJO! option free on the Urchins faction card which is a great source of nightmare reduction along with the Urchin favor.

What about the 30 supply expedition?

7.25 actions to acquire 7.25 favours. (You only need 29 supplies, actually, because the first progress is free when starting the expedition.)
7.25 actions and 362.5 rostygold to turn those into 30 supplies.
1 action to start the expedition.
10 actions of buccaneering (or rather, 9 buccaneering and 1 bold) to get to the end of the expedition, ignoring "A sign?" and rivals.
1 action to complete the expedition.

    Total: 26.5 actions

Reward: 125 echoes (-3.625 for supplies)

    121.375/26.5=4.58

And while your rival, the Lugubrious Seamstress, can catch up, it's very unlikely at 1.1%.

Conclusion: you're better off pursuing the shorter expedition, both for safety and for profitability.

If you buy your supplies with echoes, you spend an extra 7.50E on the way and your eventual profit is 1.887 EPA. That's quite respectable still, but still outdone by selling winsome orphans by a full third of an echo per action.

What about the 20 supply expedition?

4.75 actions to acquire favours for 19 supplies
4.75 actions and 237.5 rostygold to turn those into 19 supplies.
1 action to start the expedition.
7 actions of buccaneering to get to the end of the expedition, ignoring "A sign?" (your rival can't catch up.)
1 action to complete the expedition.

    Total: 18.5 actions

Reward: 62.5 echoes (-2.375 for supplies)

    60.125/18.5=3.25

Still good, but outdone by the others.

Pardon my ignorance, but what use is a Judgement's Egg beyond its monetary value? The wiki says it has no use, but a couple of people on this thread have made cryptic references to cats. What's that all about?

How about buying strong-backed labour? Isn't that a lot more efficient than raw echoes?

5.8 actions to acquire 5.8 strong-backed labour at a cost of 78.3 echoes
5.8 actions turn those into 29 supplies.
1 action to start the expedition.
10 actions of buccaneering (or rather, 9 buccaneering and 1 bold) to get to the end of the expedition, ignoring "A sign?" and rivals.
1 action to complete the expedition.

    Total: 23.6 actions

Reward: 125 echoes (-78.3 for supplies)

    46.7/23.6=1.98 EPA

Yes, it is better, and grindable, and only slightly inferior to visiting the Court of the Wakeful Eye while not requiring travel by zee or leaving London.

  • It gets a little better if you can sometimes throw a Dock Favour into to the mix, for example:

5.6 actions to acquire 5.6 strong-backed labour at a cost of 75.6 echoes
0.25 actions to acquire 0.25 dock favours at no cost (or perhaps a negligible cost, depending on method of acquisition)
5.6 actions turn labour into 28 supplies
0.25 actions to turn favour in 1 supply at a cost of 0.125 echoes
1 action to start the expedition.
10 actions of to get to the end of the expedition, ignoring "A sign?" and rivals.
1 action to complete the expedition.

    Total = 23.7 actions

    Reward = 125 – 75.725 for supplies = 49.275 echoes

    49.275/23.7 = ~2.08 EPA

Thank goodness I'm not stocked up on Orphans!

Since the new expeditions have an option which requires the use of an Outlandish Artifact, can anyone please help me to confirm if there are any non-Fate sources for that Artifact?

If it can only be acquired via the use of Fate, then this option to lower the rival's progress is effectively Fate-locked (by relying on a Fate-locked requirement).

You're absolutely right that labour plus favours is always better than just using labour. My point is just that the difference between labour/favours and another grind/favours is the same as the difference between labour and the other grind independently. Therefore, labour is only worthwhile if 1.98 EPA is the best grind open to you—whether because of mechanics or preference—even if you use favours on top of that.
