Look out your rod and reel: the Fruits of the Zee Festival is upon us! The festival begins today, 20th August, and will end on the 3rd of September. As summer winds down, enjoy calming fishing trips and indulge in a cornucopian repast of delights plucked fresh from the bounteous Zee.

Hire a fishing boat, land a Strange Catch and trade it at the festival for special rewards! Things you may also experience include: the famous wishing well, maypole dancing, Drownie serenades, and beer.

Secure an invitation to a secret feast and catch a glimpse of your Destiny. Will it be a vision of victory or a dream of darkness?

You may even see a few familiar faces from the recent election...

Catch a ferry from Wolfstack Docks to Mutton Island to join the festivities!

The Fruits of the Zee Festival is open to all players, no matter your level. You don’t need a boat, and if you don't know the way to Wolfstack Docks, there's a helpful urchin at your lodgings who will be happy to ferry you for a reasonable price.

Ah, the Fruits of the Zee! I have a love-hate relationship with you. Okay, really a love-blah relationship. I enjoy your mechanics, I enjoy your writing, but there's not really any reason for me to spend any time with you. Everything I wanted from you I received on the first day of my first festival. Your cousins Hallowmas and the Rose fascinate and titillate and, well, frustrate me all the way to the finish line, and even He Who Must Dress in Red demands my continued attention to his terrible sack. You? Well, we get together, we share a few lumps for old time's sake, and then it's back to London a half-hour later. I continue my life as if nothing has happened.

I like you. I do. I want to love you. But in a world of talkative cats, homicidal knives, and ridiculous headdresses, there's only so much time one can give to fishing for the same old catch.

Maybe next year, love.

I want to say a big thank you to FBG for a great event. This is my first time experiencing FotZ, and I thoroughly enjoyed tinkering around with the fishing mechanics, and the storylets and how they meshed with the regular Mutton Island activities. (In a way I'm kinda glad there are no new seasonal items this year - fewer things for a latecomer/old-player-back-from-hiatus to collect. :] ) It's also my first experience with Destinies, and indeed, they are FL's writing and lore at its absolute finest. I don't regret playing them without looking at spoilers/guides, you can only experience Destiny for the first time once. (Though I did look at the Destiny guide afterwards!)

Thanks FBG for a wonderful Festival!

Debating an empty chair is a long-standing political tradition. There was a much-publicised case a few years ago, at one or another party convention, that I won't dwell on, but there are examples dating back the better part of a century, at least.

You know, this festival makes me very glad that mayoral candidates have been getting thumbnail makeovers. Do you know how confusing this would be if the Jovial Contrarian and the Melancholy Curate still looked like one another?

Welp, if the biyearly schedule was to be believed this was the year to add new items, but looking at the fate section in the cove nothing new is available. Might as well head back to London now that I've experienced literally all the new content that was added (though I do have to say I love the chair).

No new items? Not a single one? That's... a bit of a downer.

We got all that Zubmariner-related stuff before that game was released, so I was expecting something similar for Sunless Skies...

There is literally nothing for me to do here after seeing the two Contrarian storylets.

If you're absurdly lucky and willing to spend 27 Partial Maps, my numbers suggest you can manage level 15 maximum. If you don't spend a penny but spend/trade some Quirks at the end, you'll squeeze out 6 levels on the first go, then plateau at 7 on the second (after throwing your catch back the first time). If you refuse to spend Quirks or money, 5 on the first go, 6 on the second, and never any more. Importantly, you'll need to spend money/items at least twice to reach level 8+, which increasingly brings random chance into the equation even with exceptional Quirkiness (since you won't always have the chance to spend those items).

Oh, yeah, this is Contrarian all over. It's taking something that's, in itself, incredibly simple (an empty chair; a discussion of politics; a law-and-order mayoral campaign) and, with a little nudging, turning it into grand political theatre (a series of emotional displays worthy of the opera; a lifetime's work; a scheme that's part revolutionary plot, part satirical farce, part intelligence-gathering on a massive scale).

Correct to a word. Even without all the ulterior motives, it's plenty sufficient as a way to let the masses placate themselves--it comes best straight from the horse's mouth.

"The beauty of it, if I may say so myself, is that it can represent whoever or whatever you want it to. My policies, Feducci's, Feducci himself. Really: we should abolish the Mayorality and replace it with that chair."

I think if done "right", this is actually profitable. A few remarks:

1. There are actually two options for the 1-33 range: "Listen to the Drownie's Songs" (which raises Nightmares) and "Dance with a Drownie" which raises Wounds. Both give 1-2 CP menaces, that means you can - on average - choose each option 26 times without hitting 8 in the respective menace.

2. Given (1) means that I can play an option in the 1-33 range 52 times. Assuming that *Sights at the Festival* has a uniform distribution, I can play a total of 156 options before I hit either Nightmares or Wounds 8.

3. Based on your table of profits, the average EPA for those 156 actions is (0.33 * 1.7) + (0.66 * 2.5) = 2.211 EPA.

4. It requires 5 actions to go to Mutton Island and 5 actions to return, so the total trip takes 10 actions.

5. Assuming we get social actions to reduce Wounds and Nightmares from an acquaintance (this would probably need to be an alt so the action investment isn't an issue) we need 6 offers of healing and 6 offers to reduce Nightmares to get back to 0 for both, for a total of 12 actions.

6. The total number of actions required is 156 + 10 + 12 = 178 actions

7. The average profit is (2.211 * 156) / 178 = 1.938 EPA

(As always, let me know if I made a mistake ... they love sneaking in wink)

This looks pretty profitable. Not "Trading-urchins-at-the-Court"-kind of profitable but still pretty good. Plus, you are reasonably often in London (every other day) to do other things there. Obviously, the whole thing hinges on having either a good friend or an alt to provide the necessary menace-reduction offers exactly when you need them. If you need to reduce menaces at Mutton Island or do it in London using other means, I agree that the whole thing is not profitable.

Perhaps an idea for next year is that we can have a spearfishing option in addition to the standard boat excursion. We have diving suits, we have the Wrecker's Cove. Who wouldn't want to drop down and take their chances to land a special catch in the midst of dangerous zee beasts encircling you, and your oxygen supply in danger of running out?

=)

I took it as a joke referencing how useless Feducci was as a mayor.
On top of that, it was the Contrarian giving the people what they wanted... and making fools of them, as he usually does.

As for Fishing, even with spending all the items, throwing the catch back the first time and sacrificing quirks, I only got to 8+! Since there is no new item available, I will not keep trying but... am I doing something wrong?

The empty chair and related dialogue was priceless. As is much of how the Contrarian frames things.

=)

I will echo the sentiments of others about wishing we had new items available in the Wreckers Cove. Perhaps something for FB to reflect on for next year. Admittedly, they have a lot going on right now; so, understandable. But I enjoy Sackmas and FotZ the most each year, far more than any of the others. I would have preferred to see one of the other events get shortchanged in this regard, if at all. I may be in the minority, however.

That said, I really enjoyed the festival for a number of reasons. I’ll head back over this weekend for a second visit before it ends.

I don't think so; it's the random element introduced at the end of the process. I had two cycles, producing almost the same catch value, but ended up with 4 and 7 respectively. The higher values are hard to get, as is the very low one. Someone did the figures upthread.

With two options offering a 2.5 item with no menaces I decided to give it a go and see if it's profitable to farm E during this festival.
With my 288 Watchful I will pick to Listen to the Drownies' songs and make an average of the success and alt success so I came up with this:
Spy on a delivery for the Custodial Chef 1-51.7250.08625
Listen to the Drownies' songs1-331.70.391
The Empty Chair34-662.50.825
The Mayor is at the Festival! 67-1002.50.85

EPA2.15225

From this you must add the AP required to reduce the menaces so not better than the Court; unless you want EI and Sworn Statement.

I really like this event most out of all of them, in large part because there's minimal random chance and no opportunity cards involved in getting wasted on Mutton Isle. Are there really no new items? Or is this just a bug?

If there are no new items, no new content, and no new mechanics . . . I may as well go back to not playing until the next festival. That's extremely disappointing, as there was nothing new last year either in terms of content. Hmm. Maybe I'm just mistaken, though?

I found two clicks related to the Contrarian.

They were perhaps three paragraphs at the very most.

Unless I'm missing something else, I think "new content" would be generous.

The same goes last year for Feducci.

A bit unfortunate, but I'm more or less fine without new cove items. So long as there's a relief every other year or so, I'm content with having the Festival staying relatively the same.

For more practical application of the Festival, I'd like to know if the event is a good echo grind. After all, I did just get 12.5 echoes in a matter of 5 actions from sitting in a chair. Would it be best to stay on the island for the time being, or would I be better suited sailing back to London?
