What the HECK was the "Great Rat Flood" mentioned in the text for getting paid for being a rat catcher? Is there any other information on it anywhere or is it sort of a "Spatula Incident" thing that doesn't get talked about?

Not sure about the dating, but "Great Rat Flood" certainly could describe the mythical "Ratmas". This is not the original, but it may provide some context.
