Delicious friends, we are wildly excited to announce that the Fallen London website redesign will go live Tuesday the 5th of June!

After eight or more years unchanged, the Fallen London website has received a full visual redesign. We’ve also used this time to make many general improvements to the overall user experience of the site.

Other updates include:
  • Making Fallen London responsive so it can be played in mobile browsers
  • Tech updates (it’ll now be in HTTPS, huzzah!)
  • Reorganisation of the Myself, Possessions, and Bazaar areas to make finding info and items more efficient

It’s important to bear in mind that after the redesign goes live, we’ll still be working on making some final tweaks as well as bug fixes. A huge thanks to all the beta testers who’ve helped us along the way! Once live, any feedback or bug reporting will continue to be tremendously useful - these can be sent directly to fallenlondonredesign@failbettergames.com.

A wonderfully new Fallen London is coming your way very soon, delicious friends! If you're interested, there's a little video demo of the new site on our blog.
--------------------------------------------------------------
25 MAY 2018 UPDATE:

Anyone wishing to try out the new site early can do so at beta.fallenlondon.com, which is now open to all.

We're intending to keep the beta site open right up to its full launch in order to test it on our servers. If for any reason you run into any issues, please send them directly to: fallenlondonredesign@failbettergames.com

Interesting. I am still not entirely happy with the website having a redesign in the first place, but I would not be upset with this design. In my personal opinion, it is an improvement over the last redesign. I like it. And I am sure most of the fanbase will like it as well.

I see that the candle, quote on quote 'delicious friend', and somewhat 'parchmenty' feeling have returned. I am not entirely sure how I feel about the map, which appears to be from the mobile app. The separation of the Myself and Items tabs is delightful. It is nice to know that you took our feedback into consideration. I thank the designers and the beta testers for their hard work. We appreciate your efforts to make this game a better one.

I still don't see why the site needed a redesign in the first place, but I don't mind the new design either. Thank you for all that you have done for us.

My major complaint is that this is yet another website going the route of "Hey, let's take our mobile website and stretch it out for desktop!" Everything is more stretched out, there's useless whitespace everywhere, clickable elements are bigger and farther apart and simpler (for instance, shop icons are gone from the Bazaar tab unless you hover over them). Why? To make tapping them on a touch screen easier, of course. Which has no use on a PC and makes thing take up a lot more space for no reason.

Besides my personal pet pieve, I will also echo what others have said about the fact that new sterile-looking blue colour scheme really doesn't fit Fallen London, and neither do the "modern" rounded corners. Other than these design choices, I'm looking forward to a more responsive site.

I guess according to the video the next exceptional story is going to be "Caught Red Handed"

The Site looks awesome though. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the roundness f the qualities though... it felt like I was looking at a portrait before. Now it's like I'm in the app store.

Rounded corners are the bane of my existence and my most hated part of modern UI design, but otherwise it looks okay. From the screenshot, the main window and several buttons appear to have sharp corners; only the stat icons have those most loathed of rounded corners.

The header on the new profile page takes up a frankly excessive amount of space. The equipment display seems off too. It's out of order (glove/hat/clothing/companion/destiny/weapon/boots, club/transport/affiliation/home comfort) compared to the more logical order of the possessions page. It's also missing ship and spouse.

Speaking of equipment, having the outfit selector directly under the lodgings on the possessions page is rather strange. The mouseover for the lodgings often blocks the menu momentarily. The menu's placement there also makes it unintuitive for users not already familiar with its function--on the current site it's right above outfits, and thus clearly related, but now it's sandwiched between the unrelated lodgings image and expanded inventory button.

Also just noticed that item and quality description text is justified in mouseovers, which looks terrible in some cases. That spacing for Infernal Contracts is, well, infernal.

Also also, the way it's currently formatted, the item quantity number for mouseovers in the inventory isn't immediately recognizable as giving the quantity. I would suggest adding the 'x' back, i.e. "Infernal Contract x 9" rather than "Infernal Contract 9".

Agreeing with the sentiment that there's a lot of white space on desktop; everything feels very big. I'll probably get used to it. The map icons look blurry for some reason, which is pretty unpleasant. The map itself and the new header art is lovely, though.

Bug of some kind: The beta site seems to be correctly synced, except for the amount of Fate I have. It's correct on the old site, but too low on the new site. What gives?

Possessions should definitely be reordered in conversion order, and alphabetically in Curiosities (though I do like useable items in front in that one). Social qualities no longer expand to show names, as SingingFlame said. I love that qualities are now sorted alphabetically, but there seem to be a couple sorting mistakes:
  • Acquainted With shows up in between some of the Acquaintances, should be below them.
  • Favours for Society, Great Game, and Urchins are sorting below their respective Renown qualities, when they should be sorted above. Edit: Actually, this might be because I have more favours than renown with these factions. That's still weird, though; shouldn't they sort consistently either way?
  • A Fine Piece in the Game sorts at the top of Accomplishments, which would be correct if it wasn't prefixed with "The Great Game". Maybe snip that prefix off since it doesn't really add any information that isn't already apparent?
  • Social qualities sort all over the place, ignoring their prefixes (Chess, Dinner, etc), but they really should all be together. The list isn't improved by having several different Chess qualities sprinkled throughout. (Request: could we maybe have a separate category for social qualities?)

Some nitpicky thoughts about how qualities are sorted:
  • I kind of wish Profession and Addressed As were in the same category, either Circumstance or Major Lateral, as they seem like the same theme.
  • Favouring The Cheery Man/Last Constable shows up in Circumstance, while Favouring the Blind Pianist/Sallow Spirifer shows up in Stories. They should probably be in the same category.
  • Why isn't Route: The Cave of the Nadir under Routes? I guess because it's not a proper location on the map, but it seems strange to have something called Route in a different category.
  • Why is the Starving Poet an acquaintance at all? That should really get re-titled and moved to Stories.

Having used the beta site only briefly, it seems like maybe 10% of all transitions end up with a blank story page as reported by lukeskylicker and silurica. It seems like manually refreshing the page is the only way to get the content to reappear. The frequency with which this occurs makes it disruptive enough that I think for now I'd prefer to use the original site.

The new aesthetics are quite nice though, overall I like the redesign from a visual perspective.

As far as I can tell, the items are currently sorted first by whether or not they can be used, then by their internal ID number. This usually works fine but I'm guessing for the categories you mentioned items were added in a different order. Having usable items first also causes issues for some categories like Rubbery (as the base item Deep Amber should be first) and Wines (Greyfields 1879 gets shunted to the end).

Really I hope they just undo the new ordering aside from Curiosity. Having usable items first is really handy for a category that big. The search feature helps, but it's much less convenient--especially on mobile--than just scrolling to the item when you don't have to look for it through the whole category. Curiosity should still go back to alphabetical order though, since now we have silliness like the older and newer Court works being separated.

On a semi-related note, I just noticed that trying to inspect page elements in-browser shrinks the page width and suddenly the mobile site appears instead. What a pain.

I've been using the beta website on my smartphone, love how responsive it is, but I'm also getting the story tab going blank problem at times. I noticed this seems to occur whenever the connection is having a hiccup (either on my side or on the server's side), which makes me wonder... I see the game can automatically sync itself now, but is there something akin to a manual soft refresh built into it? Like, in the old site, if I encounter any tab blanking I can click on the tab again until it loads. It doesn't seem I can do the same with the beta site - or at least not with the story tab in mobile. A complete refresh can fix the blank tab of course, but I like "click until it works" better.

And this is more nitpicking than anything, but I also have problem with how bad and inconsistent the cropping of some icons are - not something I like to see carried over from the app. An example. It bugs me how the two Shadowy masks aren't aligned on the same level and the Exceptional Hat and Judgmental Hat are cropped differently.

Yes! Search functionality! Inventory is separate from Qualities! And I am a sucker for a properly labeled map!

Resizing the window works a lot better now and that mobile screen... yum! It's not going to feel so painful to navigate around the site now.

Thank you for all the back-end fixes!

I must say I'm impressed with the amount of changes implemented since the last beta closed in such a short amount of time. It's really good to see all that feedback was taken seriously. With the final changes once the site goes live I'm sure it will be great.
The new looks are a matter of taste (I personally like it now that the icons have changed to rounded corners), but funtionally I don't think anyone can say the new site will be worse.

The only issue I still have right now is the story tab occasionally going blank again, but the live site is also throwing 504 errors.

As for the item order, it's better now, but as someone already mentioned a few categories are still a bit weird.

It's not displaying my spouse, ship, or club on the beta site profile view. This bothers me. The profile view overall is somewhat frustrating.

In the possessions, it feels like item icons are smaller, which is a pity because they were already fairly small. Also, **they are no longer in order**. It's a lot less intuitive when they are not in conversion order. This is true for Wines, Infernal, and Wild Words. Also, having unrelated items (like the University Fellowship Endowment) sandwiched between items breaks the flow.

The pages are in general just very tall. The fate page, for instance, is so friggin long for little actual change.

I appreciate improved responsiveness but there are so many things that are visual downgrades. I understand the desire to switch to a more modern site aesthetic but the old style was quite charming. The new one has nice elements (the banner image, for example), but there's a lot that just feels wrong.

After playing the beta for a while now (Opera on a Windows 10 notebook) I can say that I'm not experiencing any of the issues some people have reported - no pages blanking out, no flickering. Everything works fine. It doesn't display my Fate, though, like another user said, but I'm not sure whether it's supposed to at this time.

I still like the style a lot, except that I'd wish for another font (and bigger font size). Making the top storylet a little bit more distinct from the options below it surely wouldn't hurt. Same goes for options that cost more than one action, they should maybe stand out a bit more.

Splitting the old Myself tab into one for qualities and one for items is a very good idea. I'm not sure I like the new Profile pages though. They'll take some getting used to.

Something no one has apparently noticed so far: the new "account settings" page is missing a "Return to the Game" button, which is rather impractical. The only way to leave that page currently is logging out.

Something I'd like to suggest is reorganizing the Fate tab as it's a bit of a mess currently. I'm afraid it's rather daunting for a new player trying to figure out what's what. I'd suggest that after the Candle- and Deck-refreshers and other mechanical stuff, there should be a header "Fate-locked Stories" for all the non-Exceptional ones, maybe with the most recent one on top. After those, another header like "Explore our former Exceptional Stories!" and then all the ES sorted, again with the most recent one on top.

It would also be great if they were given some kind of markers displaying which ES make up a Season, or maybe even each Season's name as a small header, with the three stories grouped together and a mention of the bonus story. Since the number of ES is constantly increasing (and hopefully will keep doing so for a long time!), I think it's really important to keep them in some kind of order.
(Of course, you could just put in a link here instead... :P)

I slightly dislike how there's not much clear distinction or separation between storylet text and the options below it, as though the content were merely the first option in the list.

Opened up the beta and poked around: Seems alright.

Most noticeable and bothersome thing to me would be that, in general, things take up far too much vertical space. I thought I had to scroll a lot with the OLD myself tab! Now my equipment takes up nearly two full vertical screens!

I've had the opportunity to try the site out on a couple of different devices. Here's some general impressions of the three different designs:
  • I have nothing bad to say about the smallest of the three designs. It was functional, and made good use of the limited screen space on my phone.
  • Having the sidebar hidden behind a burger menu on the middle one will take some getting used to, but otherwise I don't have much to say about that one, either.
  • I agree with some of the people farther up in the thread that there's too much white space on the Desktop size. You need that space on a touch screen, but on a Desktop, it just looks empty. Plus, it makes for a whole lot more scrolling in areas with a lot of storylets.

Minor quibbles:
  • Right now, when you're involved in a social action such as chess or helping someone with their nightmares, hovering over that quality on the story tab tells you who you're interacting with. It also shows your proteges/patrons, acquaintances, etc. However, that information isn't showing up on the new version. It's a small thing, but it's handy to be able to, say, see if your protege is waiting on a lesson or not without having to head back to your lodgings.
  • The "story tab randomly goes blank" problem has mysteriously appeared again, but only on the beta site.

Some miscellaneous comments:
  • I like having the menaces color coded in red.
  • I also like having the location banners stretch across the top of the screen. It gives the redesign some much-needed atmosphere.
  • Will search functionality eventually be extended to journals? Don't get me wrong, being able to search the Bazaar shops and stories is really useful, but it where it's needed most is the journals.

I admit that the redesign grew on me over the course of watching the video. Honestly, the only issue I really have with it is the color scheme. I liked the red progress bars more than the blue because they're bolder and more distinctive, and I liked the darker background of the current website more because of personal preference, but I can live with that. I think it'd actually be really fun to have minor customization options like that (switching colors of sidebar text, different shades of brown for the background, etc.), but I'd be reasonably apprehensive of offering too much choice in that regard as a content designer.

I'm excited to try it out on mobile. I actually really liked playing it in the browser on mobile (I tried the app once, but uninstalled it), sliding the screen and zooming in and out because the website wasn't designed for this.

Anyway, I really like some of the changes since the first preview: the return of the candle and "Delicious friend" are nice and stylistic, as well as the compromise of the rounded box, which I really like. Looking forward to seeing this.

I imagine one of the main points of the redesign is to have to maintain only one (and it being one that works on all platforms), so it's doubtful they'll have a legacy version.

Not really--this is outright wrong given there's a completely distinct mobile version of the site. While I agree with you that some of these changes are counterproductive (especially the lack of space efficiency) the site layout retains the same fundamental structure of the current site. The mobile site is structured much more like the app.

Granted, I only know this because I was part of the beta. The blog post's mention of the mobile site is rather unclear and there's no images at all.

Overall, the redesign is pretty nice. The only problem that I can think of right now is that I can't save any of the snippets (the sidebar ones), and the snippets are one of my favorite things about Fallen London (the Starveling Ket! The Starveling Ket! What did it find in the oubliette?)

Now that the beta site is open and have been able to navigate at my own leisure I think I can give my two cents on the changes with more confidence now.

First off, my major issue with the picture for qualities becoming rounded has been somewhat abated by the fact that items have remained sharp. It's actually mildly usefully to be able to more easily differentiate the two at a glance. If they were both sharp I think it would actually have looked even weirder than having the two be different and substantially better than if they were both rounded. The main qualities becoming rounded has, actually, kinda grown on me with surprising speed. The framing works especially well with the BDR qualities.

I was not able to spot that detail in the video unfortunately. Would have been nice to have a voice over talking about the major changes but its a bit late for that now.

Second of all I love the new headers. That new and now very prominent art looks gorgeous. Special mention should go to Spite, Veilgarden, Ladybones road, the now splendid looking Shuttered Palace, and - to a lesser extent - the university and watchmakers hill. The former four which have new, more flavorful looking art, and the later two which, while retaining the same art, were smothered in the previous designs by things like the candle, the site title, and delicious friend being added on top of them and forcing their art to become much smaller relative to everything else. Just look at the difference between university of the current site and the beta one. I had not visited the university in a while so I actually had to go back and check the current site to make sure that it wasn't actually a new image.

Lastly, all the main tabs are much easier to navigate now. The search bar is going to make my tier three side-conversions simpler and selling things is less of a hassle now. The stories, possessions, and myself pages are more functional than before. People might argue the original design was more flavorful but I disagree. The previous design made it really hard to use anything at bottom of the page and there was nothing about the design that made it innately more flavorful. Wild Words, Rumor, and Wines which I found myself converting/selling quite often were unusually annoying. I don't think I like how it's a list now (that is, it orders everything from top to bottom) on the possessions and myself tab but it works. I suppose. I do miss having just the icons though, it took way less space compared to the new design and was still very understandable and navigable.

I don't know if this new design is a step up or not. I definitely don't think it's a step down though. Maybe a step to the side or a small step up but it is very definitely not worse. At least in my personal opinion.

The only serious criticisms I have is that it seems some of the beta bugs seems to have managed to persist to the open beta (or rather the "get used to the new design earlier" beta). The story tab seems to end up becoming completely blanking and shrinking all the way up to the top for some reason. I'm not using some super special browser (just google chrome) and I have no idea what's causing it but it's pretty weird. Also this is less of a glitch and more of a visual discrepancy but on the bazaar tab (and presumably any page where the category list can follow you) if go all the way to the bottom and switch which shop you're in the category list will shoot to the top. If you scroll so much as a pixel to make it update again it will shoot back to where you are again. It's nothing major but it's a tad irritating it's managed to avoid being spotted for so long. Failbetter has plenty of time to correct these though.

So, all in all, I think I'm reasonably happy now that I've been able to play with it by myself now.

Just one more thing though. I promise.

Failbetter. Please.

Why did you change the icon for the luminous neathglass goggles?! They had a unique picture! Now they're just a differently tinted pair of the irrigo goggles!

No, like, seriously. I'd love to hear why you'd take away a unique icon for a less unique one to replace it. Was it too vertical or something and couldn't easily be cropped?

TL;DR: Come on! If you want a guys two cents on the biggest change to this site in a long time you should be willing to read it all. Be excited! We haven't had something like this in forever go to the website if you'd like. If only to get used to the new design earlier.

The beta site and the current site both sync live. Switching back and forth shouldn't cause any issues

Not really--this is outright wrong given there's a completely distinct mobile version of the site. While I agree with you that some of these changes are counterproductive (especially the lack of space efficiency) the site layout retains the same fundamental structure of the current site. The mobile site is structured much more like the app.

Really? That's interesting. I was under the impression that they were planning to ensure a single website that would be responsive accross all platforms - the whole "more responsive" improvement has been repeated many times, which wouldn't be nearly as important if the "main" site wasn't meant to be played on mobile (in fact, it would be pretty much moot, because I have never had any problems whatsoever even on pretty small screens less than 1000px in width).

I'll take your word for it, but it does beg the question as to why everything looks and feels like it was designed for a touch screen if they have a dedicated desktop website.

Got it. Thanks Reused NPC. Will get it fixed ASAP.

Some of the rounded icons look a bit fuzzy to me, but I can't tell if that's an actual image with the issue or the contrast with the higher-detail storylet images.

Also, anyone else who took part in the beta may need to clear their cache to see the changes.

I gave the new site a short try and must say I'm delighted with the looks. Those huge new location banners are great! Can't say too much about functionality now, that will have to wait.

Minor nitpick: the font currently used in the beta looks rather unimpressive and generic. Any plans to change it until the site goes live?

There's an "expanded" button underneath your lodgings in the Possessions tab. That's where the affiliation, transportation, spouse, ship, club, and home comfort selections are.

One thing I kind of miss in terms of the redesign is being able to save the little "Tell me another thing!" snippets to your journal - the option is present in the old site, but not in the new.

When drawing/discarding cards (on Desktop version), the rest of the frame "flickers" for a second - the entire story tab below the cards jumps up a few pixels and then down again. It's very disorienting when quickly drawing and discarding a few cards.

Time to give it a go for a bit.

I agree with dov about the card issue. Just add a static height to the .deck-info and it's all right. smile

But those 40x40 pics vs the old 40x52 are going to take some time to get used to. Have a feeling something is left out of the context.

Α question: can you change outfits from the front page? Having to click 4 times to play a specific card gets tiring fast.

So, I don't mean to take away from all the hard work that's obviously gone into this, but is there no chance for something like an old.fallenlondon.com if we have a strong preference for the current site?
