Okay, not nicer exactly. More likeable? More sympathetic? Something like that.
I think the word is "adorkable".
(And Pages would probably approve of this word, as well.)

It's been a long time since I played that story, so I don't remember any mention of famous poets being devoured (I certainly remember that he was killed), but I kind of do hope it happened because that's hilariously hardcore for Mr. Pages.

It is what the Dandy claims. We cannot know if he was literally eaten, I am afraid. Oh, and the dandy is definitely nicer than Bosie, which is why at first I thought it is some other lover of Wilde. Then I realized that with the Neath's more queer friendly morality, perhaps Bosie had less reason to be awful.

The Vake presumably eats people. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Eaten's dubious regards were at work as well, for that matter.

If you have a Giggling Mandrake, you can play with it for some Wounds and other gains.

You can acquire wounds at the University, by trying to raise your Scholar of the Correspondence. You can also fail to hunt the Impossible Theorem, but this is a) expensive b) you will get more wounds than just the 1.
Several interactions with a Starveling Cat will grant a wound, including interacting directly from your inventory as well as pawning one off as "Tribute" in the fifth coil.
Train in your Gymnasium. Fight before the Mayor. Assist in a Stakeout. Save some Rubberies or Tomb-Colonists from a fire at the Carnival.

You can gawk at the hyena with a suitably low nightmare count.
