St Frankenstein's Day is nearly here, so here's this week's thread for questions about the creation of life from lifeless material!

...I have been informed that I am slightly confused about the nature of the upcoming holiday, but this is this week's questions thread nonetheless.

I'd take that to mean that the Ministry knew about the book's publication in advance, and prevented its release almost at the last minute.

So I saw this new sidebar snippet:

The most quickly-censored book in Fallen London was a children's book entitled 'Loste in the Myste: St Destin's Children'. Launched at nine o'clock on a Thursday, the Ministry had already banned and removed it from shelves by eight forty-five.

Am I correct in interpreting it as the book being removed 15 minutes before launch, perhaps through timey-wimey shenanigans?

I wasn't sure if it was 11 hours 45 minutes or -15 minutes.

Hello, Neathly Folks! Happy Festive to everyone!

Two extremely important questions, as I have reached the limit of my Ambition and considering if I shall pursue another (yeah, let's spend some Fate and support Failbetter so they release Sunless Skies in perfect shape smile )

1) Are there any Ambitions that have been completely written? And are they meant to be? I was really bummed, when I suddenly hit the edge of content in my run for Nemesis - I was sooooo angry and bloodlusty, and now I can't even make those behind the whole story suffer! (characters, not FBG smile )
2) How often do Ambitions get new chapters? Is it feasible waiting for it?

None of the Ambitions are done. They are all one update away from being finished.

The Ambitions hadn't been updated since June 2015, and then Light Fingers received an update late last year as part of the Fallen London Reworks project (bringing it to parity with the other Ambitions). The FLR project brought progress to quite a few narrative loose ends in Fallen London, but it officially concluded in December, and FBG has not yet stated what their goals or timelines are for 2018. Given their recent cutbacks, I'm not entirely sanguine about them putting out new content like they did in the latter half of 2017, at least until Sunless Skies is launched.

Not really. Get up to five Renown at the carnival, after that you simply have to collect favours and then convert them into Renown using the faction's Renown item (which you generally have to buy, though some of them do crop up in play.) It's a Brass Skull for the Devils and a Reliquary for the Church. It's a very slow, grindy process because Failbetter likes that sort of thing.

There are a few one-time direct Renown increases in the game, but they are few and far between, and I couldn't even start telling you where to find them.

The Private Auction is one of the best ways in the game to get lots of MW in one go.

When grinding NW for Notability you don't just look at how many action it takes overall. An option which gives 100 CP of MW but requires 49 prior actions to setup is often better than an action which gives 2 CP of MW which you can repeat at will.

So that's... not entirely direct, but it's still a pretty good answer for the first part of your questions.

As for the second part... Not having done SMEN myself, I gather the Neath, and especially the Nadir, have something to do with Treacheries. I'm not entirely clear on what Treacheries are or how they came to pass. I have a general policy that if the answer involves SMEN, I reconsider the question. But it's a direction your inquiries can take, if you are so inclined.

Unless they've changed it, it is not worth it.

Edit: apparently it was improved with the favours update (plus it only costs favours now). So my answer is now maybe :P

I have a question. Several, in fact.

First, if, for some reason, one fails to draw the Lady in Lilac card by the end of the Feast, will it become a pinned storylet, like Mr Sacks' cards?

Second, how long do we have before our Masquing disappears and the Feast ends?

If you're talking about The Seventh Letter, a Kickstarter backer for Cultist Simulator got to ask Alexis Kennedy a lore question, and they asked for details on the characters. They shared the reply, so I'm pretty sure it's ok to post it here:

[spoiler]"The Messenger is of course the Bazaar. The Phoenix is an untroubled star, busy at the melodramas of the High Wilderness.. The Owls are the Masters; the Dragons, the enforcement-emanations of Law; the Ravens, the lesser incarnates of the Liberation in the days before there was war in Heaven. Time is (as Aulus Gellius knew) the father of Truth, but is also of course in turn the child of Law. I've probably missed a couple, but I don't have the text to hand, and it was a very broad question."[/spoiler]

Can anyone confirm that A Trade in Faces has a case to solve? I see this wiki page (retired), but my guess is that there WILL be a case. That story wasn't just an alternative to start the Trade.

Time is, after all, strange in the Neath.
Having said that, I still haven't chanced upon the Encounter card for 24 hours now. Anyone else have that problem? Should I contact services? It seems like an RNG issue, but you never know.

It's the RNG being petulant, I think. I remember someone last year who didn't see the card at all until the last day of the Feast. Here's hoping that you won't have that difficulty, but I think it's fair to say that that nothing but ill luck is involved.

So uh... we gonna sticky this thread or what?

Also happy Pancake Day everyone! Or whatever your local variation of Shrove Tuesday may be, up to and including Mardi Gras and/or Carnival, but they are but mere reflections of the clearly superior holiday celebrating the Cake of Pan.

You mean the Private Auction? It's expensive, but I like it. You trade 7 Society Favours and a personal Recommendation (both of which you can get fairly readily through the party invitation) and a Collection of Curiosities (which you can grind via War of Assassins) for cash (3643–10697 x Penny) and MW (+95-140 CP), according to the Wiki entry.

Edit: I haven't done the math, and if Suinicide says it's not worth it, then that means it's probably not efficient in terms of action use.

Hieronymus Drake: Gentleman scholar, big-game hunter, scar-faced aristocrat. Remarkably sane, all things considered.
Tanith Wyrmwood: Longshanks cat-burglar; Bohemian author; now, perhaps, something more. Bubbly, expressive, and affectionate. It’s not only still waters that run deep.
Telemachia Lee: Gentle lady by birth, brawling Docker by choice. Good company in the drunk tank.

Better yet, you can do one more loop of the Republic after reaching whatever level of Austere. There's various options that set menaces directly to specific levels, which is far faster than slowly decreasing them at the end (and frees up your Changed by the Iron Republic for getting journals).

Here are the options to set all Menaces to safe levels:

Day 1: random -> 8 (pick facelessness to go to 12) or 12
12: [needs steadfast] -> 17, nightmares=3
17: run for it -> 19, nightmares=2
19: [hoodlums] random -> 32, suspicion=6, or 27, suspicion=2
a) 32: stuck in -> 34, wounds+1
b) 27: ->34, random suspicion+1 or scandal-2, nightmares+4
34: a firm hand -> 38, nightmares=6
38: ->40, wounds=6
40: debate law [shadowy 217] -> 51, wounds 2
51: [heartless] -> 71, nightmares 1 OR 64, scandal=3
a) 71: going elsewhere -> 78, suspicion+1
b) 64: [have 5 (6?) brass rings] -> 78, suspicion+2, 75 proscribed materials
78: packed in: -> 99, scandal=3

You end up with:
Scandal: 3
Wounds: 2
Suspicion: at worst 6 and 3 cp
Nightmares: 6 and 1 cp

This info is from the Scarlet Saint Post a few years back. It should still be the same.

Want to add some things:
1) You can get a box via Nadir either with End of Battles card or by pilling Dramatic Tension.
2) When grinding MW for Notability, it's kind of great to have Talk of Town pilled up (Polite invitation card) and, when need arises, do a party and pick the Personal Recommendation option which grants 40 MW!

Putting things together, you waste ~80 E via the box and Society favours cash in (but takes 7 more AP), plus AP from parties, but those can offer low of extra favours or can be simply used to pump MW back from TtH visit.

AP from parties can vary a lot depending on your needs. I do parties in 6-7 AP depending on rare success from arriving late (followed by Devil/Contrarian) so let's add 7 more AP (just for example porpoise because you need more parties before cash in).

The private auction gives ~71 E so you end loosing 20 E (difference from Box of curios and soc favours). Add 7 Society favours, 7 more AP to finish a party for the recommendation. If you go for it means that you need MW so 54 AP (total) for 40 + 118 MW.

TLDR: Way worth it! If you are prepared with Polite and Bazaar cards plus 7 Soc favours you can get an average of 158 MW from 8 AP plus nice E out of it!

Oh, parties refresh you deck which is a big deal when hunting for Notability!
