How many actions does a zailing trip take on average?

That depends heavily on ship and luck, and also on Experienced Zailor level.

What about spending resources beforehand (maps and zee-stories) to save actions?

Have image mouseovers always revealed messages on results pages? I've only just started noticing them...

Think this feature was implemented somewhere between 6 to 9 months ago.
This made it easier to actually see the CP gain of actions. smile

I was thinking more of messages that add to the story rather than the playing mechanics. For example
The unease of displaying stolen treasures
recently in Lamentation Lock. These are not just descriptions of airs but attach to items or qualities. There was recently one with half a dozen bible verses (in the Sinking Synod]. Being mouseovers, they are ephemeral and hard to record.

I think it's just the quality's description.

For example, different Airs of London values have their own text, but the quality itself has the description "Not every day in the Neath is the same", which is what you see if you hover over it at the results page.

If that is the case, then there is one overt and one covert description. We'll have to agree to differ on this.

Jermaine: you are quite right. Qualities gained while playing Exceptional Stories often (not always) have very interesting mouseover text since a few months or something, and display changing results as you progress the story. I think "The Attendants" was the first one where I really noticed it. I don't think it's used much outside ES though.

These things are easy to overlook, it's true.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was starting to wonder whether I'd imagined it. Then I found this example (from All Things Must End):
The Ebullient Undertaker gave you a cocoon. (overt)
Old and dry. Judging by the weight. it could be empty. (mouseover comment)
And what's the description when you find this quality/item in your Myself tab?

I am not entirely sure what you mean by "overt" and not having an example that I can readily check (without paying Fate) it's hard to be certain if we are talking about the same thing but are you possibly referring the difference between level description and level change description? The former is the text that can be see on the myself tab or on your mantelpiece. The latter is shown on in the italics on the actual results page when qualities are updated. (I am not entirely sure which one of them is shown on mouseovers).

One repeatable example is "Archaeologist". The level description for Archaeologist 5 is simply "Scholar" but the level change description is "You're learning hints of the melancholy history of the Fourth City: the Fall, the Final Khan, the war with the Rosers." Another is "Working on...". The level description for it is, for example, "an Opera" but the level change description would be "You are writing an Opera."

Is that maybe what you mean? Or something else again?

It is indeed the description that appears in the mouseover. Well spotted.

The first time I noticed this feature was at the very end of the Sinking Synod, when half a dozen verses from Job appeared in the mouseover box. They repeated the bible quotes others had noticed or identified throughout the story, so I deleted the comment I'd made to that effect, since it was very late to the party. But in that case, it was not associated with an item of any kind.

Another example, where the mouseover recaps a plot element, was this one (I've been playing a bunch of seasons I'd not got around to, if you're wondering). It's also from All Things Must End:
You've given the diagram of the moth to the Ebullient Undertaker.
m/o The Avid Lepidopterist has been selling portraits of his pet to fund her candle habit.
Maybe I've just been paying insufficient attention all this time; it just seemed to me that a new, less than obvious layer of meaning had opened up that added to my understanding of the stories.

@genesis

I'm sorry, I've only noticed this feature in Exceptional Stories. I don't think it's the same, but I may be wrong.

Maybe not the best thread for the topic but...

I did quit playing FL for a year or so and now try to get back on track.

(Which leads to amazing discoveries like "Nobody knows me anymore!" (favor/renown has been implemented for most factions) and "Why do i have 30.000+ moon-pearls?"
Also awkward things like figuring out where i stopped in some quest lines and ambitions and noticing 170+ day old invites to duels and tournament of lilies. Oh dear...)

I already checked with the useful guides thread, but is there something else that is worth pointing out to a returning player?

First, welcome back!

Second, you may be interested to know that the Last Constable story has been completed, the Dilmun Club extended, and you can now get back to Court if you've been exiled and become Poet Laureate. They've also reopened the Mysteries tab; if you care to join the community speculation, there's a current-running topic on the subject.

Second-point-one, you can change specializations and, if you make the full rounds, can become a Paramount Presence. (Forgot this one.)

Third, the Feast of the Exceptional Rose begins tomorrow. Pickled tongues and glasses of teeth all around!

Fourth, Feducci is Mayor of London. I didn't do it.

Zee-ztories get you +6 CP for E2.5 in resources. This would save you at most one action.

A puzzling map will jump you a massive +25 CP, saving you roughly 7 actions for E12.5 (costing about E1.78 per action saved); it increases Troubled Waters by +20 as well. If you really don't like zailing, I suppose you could pay two puzzling maps and 5 zee-ztories to complete your trip in three actions, but you're paying E27.5 for the privilege. (Overall cost about E1.6 for each action saved this way.)

In terms of money and story both, shortening the route like this is a losing proposition. It is viable if you dislike zailing so much you'd pay to skip it (yet somehow have unlimited numbers of puzzling maps). It may still be of practical value if you've got limited actions and a strong wish to use them where you're going, or if you're really needing to get a trip done and back to London before, say, the Feast of the Exceptional Rose begins. Otherwise, I wouldn't suggest it.

Is it by any chance possible to miss out on all the Theosophistical cards at Mahogany Hall?

It is quite possible if you advance too fast in the Embroiled in the wars of Illusion story. All the cards (Fling and Mahogany) lock after the grand illusion.

EDIT: Got lucky as I never rushed stories, checked wiki, advanced it and confirmed that this option is impossible. The success (old) suggested it advances Seeking to 12, but didn't find anything else. Maybe there will be an extra story or maybe not, but that's the only reason I haven't advanced in the Wars of Illusions. Did increase my Seeking above, drew cards in the hall for few days, but nothing.

Honestly, this is one of the things I find kind of frustrating about Fallen London. Several opportunity card-based stories are very easy to lock yourself out of, and there are no messages warning you about that possibility: the Last Constable and the Theosophisticals are two examples of this problem, as in both cases I had no idea there was a card-based plotline until I'd already locked myself out.

These really need to be better-earmarked in some way: it's frustrating to miss out on content like that. The Theosophisticals in particular are really obtuse: unless I'd checked the wiki, I'd never have known.

I have no idea what the Theosophisticals even are. This is the first I've ever heard of them. Mahogany Hall isn't a place I ever spend time flipping cards in.

I'd even say missing out on these is the rule, not doing so the exception. I would never have known they existed had I not stumbled upon them on the wiki one day. This was one of the occasions where having more than one account proved very useful...
