And it has a side effect I rather don't like. Is there a way to get, for example, phosphorescent scarabs, without upconverting, and assisting in the "liberation" of night? I would rather not, and purchasing them, flat out, from the bazaar is extraordinarily expensive

Oh man. Oh man. You are going to get a lot of dissing from the pro-Liberation of Night folks. Heck, one of the writers of this game is pro-this.

There are going to be people going all role-playing on you, saying "why don't you want to be rid of the tyranny of Light" and such other in-universe nuttiness.

But seriously, you might want to just check the wiki for this, specifically this page. Just so you know, there is a relatively rare opportunity card that appears if your character is sitting in the Lodgings that lets you get some beetles, or you can spend a lot of honey to sponsor a trading voyage and get buckets of beetles.

No dissing allowed, please. This is a civil board.

Anyway, there are a few options depending on what you want the scarabs for:

Whirring Contraptions? This Wolfstack Docks storylet has got you covered.

Just to have? Plated Seals are the way to go here.

If you have the Light Fingers ambition there's a pretty decent source along that storyline too, but the above two methods are available for all players.

Ah, thank you both. I needed them to create a whirring contraption for the next step in getting a ship. Fortunately, I only had to buy a few more.

It looks like I really need to focus on getting my renown at the docks up! I was planning on it, but now I have a very good reason to do so. I'm currently at 10, so that might be a while.

In the meantime, I'll likely hold off on anything requiring either scarabs specifically, or whirring contraptions. Until I'm well loved at the docks, or I win at a most singular spot of gambling..

If you happen to have wilmont's street unlocked then the rotation there can generate whirring contraption or strong backed labor.

Consider changing a faction pet to a Taciturn Mynah which grants you Favours: Docks, and Visiting a Regretful Soldier what is somewhat approved by dockers too.

And don't forget to prepare a lot of money and/or honey!

There is also a card in the Nadir that supplements the Wilmots End carousel nicely to help towards whirring contraptions. Also look at second tier professions, one there supplies a steady number of scarabs.

Here's a thought though: why doesn't actions like betraying the anarchist cell (in the commission for working against the masters) reduce the "minutely helping the liberation of night" quality? I mean, I've gotten literally hundreds of anarchists permanently killed. That has to be a little bit more than minutely harming the liberation of night.

The Liberation of Night is not like those petty goals of murdering the imperial family and stealing all the things in the name of fair distribution. One gets the idea that there is no retrograde option, that whatever they're doing with all those candles and memories and beetles is irreversible. It might not be, of course, but no mechanism has ever been given to reverse the process, and that is in itself telling.

There are two stories that have ended up going deep in revolutionary territory, deep enough to let you damage the liberation's progress. But yes, overall it is nearly irreversible.

Oooh, which stories are those?

(Admittedly, I might be more interested in helping the liberation even more).

The only one I know of is Lost in Reflections, but the other one is probably the Calendar Code. Both are Exceptional Stories that cost 45 Fate.

Lost in Reflections and the Empress' Shadow are the two, I believe.

What did Empress' Shadow have to do with the Liberation? I don't know how to do spoiler tags on the forum, so I'll be vague, but from what I can remember, the final choices just had to do with how you would influence the Shadow in regards to her surface home. Am I misremembering or was there some subtext that I missed?

And very far beyond. At least that's the ultimate hope of the Revolutionaries.
