Having visited Penstock's Wicket for the first time now, and having read a fragment of the Tragedy Procedures, a thought hit me: shouldn't the best and brightest minds in London be working on preventing tragedy in the first place, rather than coping with it?

And when it comes to Lacre overflow, we know the following:
• It is at Christmastime, the loneliest of seasons, that the Lacre overflows.
  • The Lacre is (as far as I can tell) what happens when the Bazaar weeps.
  • There is longing in Lacre
  • In matters of the Bazaar, look to love, always.
Therefore, shouldn't the goal of the best and brightest minds in London, be:

To find the Bazaar a soul mate?

Discuss.

I just want to make one observation here: Yes, this entire project is doomed to abject failure. Yes, it is probably disastrous for all foolish enough to attempt it, in a way that makes NORTH look like a free vacation to Palm Beach. However...

...most PCs in London wouldn't know that.

So there's nothing to stop an interested character in embarking on such a project. Oh, yes, it's desperate, and the whole thing is thickly topped with dramatic irony and hovering somewhere between Antigone and The Importance of Being Earnest. What of it? That's not a bad formula for interesting narrative. Whether you're wanting to comedically watch the unfortunate end of a series of promising candidates, or involve yourself in an epic quest almost cheery and hopeful enough for Lovecraft, the idea has plenty of potential--so long as the author understands going in that this isn't going to end in Bazaarine wedding bells.

Ah. You have succinctly stated the essence of Fallen London.

Wait, it's not Feducci, is it? That rogue.

Success would, in many ways, undermine the premise of the entire game. (If that sentence doesn't make sense right now, don't worry; it will.)

If this succeeds, then we may have a big problem on our hands. Like...a VERY big problem. Talking ‘bout a full on power struggle.

This – this is charming! We will endorse it; we will reproduce it; perhaps we will even see you share in the royalties.

And if we never make it to numbers six or seven, well, not all messages arrive, do they? Ask any postman.

(I would love to see this happen.)

I have no doubt that this project would fail spectacularly. The only question I have is how much damage these poor players would do to London with their good intentions. Or if it would be possible for any of them to not end up either completely insane or thoroughly dead.

I think I'll need to play further into Fallen London's content before I can figure that one out. But yes, I'll keep this as a potential story idea, because this is one hell of a windmill to tilt at.

    Ahaha.

I'd like to point out that the Bazaar does what it does out of love. And that love is often the cause of sadness, in one way or another.

Lady of Cold Steel, Lady of the Flit, Lady Alyssana Grey. A formidable woman, hard to read and slow to trust. Darkness lurks inside her.

Alts: (please direct all inquiries to Alys & say who they're for)
-Nikki, the Playful Daredevil, leading the constables on merry chases across London at every available opportunity. It's not a good robbery if you didn't get chased~
-Shylarah, waifish, wide-eyed, painfully foreign, entirely untamed. Her search for a way home now leads her to Parabola. There's something about her...
-Dr. Maxwell Thomas, a kindhearted physician who can't stand to see suffering. Moral to a fault, even to his own detriment. Unlucky in love.
I would rather be taken for a fool than deny aid where it is needed.
-Angie, the Cheeky Sharpshooter. Got her start with the Regiment and proudly operated their cannon for years. Rowdy, rough, and among the best shots in London.

I am pretty far from that late-game lore, so I have no idea what it is. And thank you for not spoiling it.

But can I assume that said singular and abiding love interest would be hard to replace? Duplicate? Or re-create either mechanically or though eldritch magic?

    D__n.

Well, so much for that idea. Maybe I'll hatch a crazier plan once I've hit the late-game lore.

I don't think the Bazaar will be willing to accept substitutes. Seems to be rather... fixated.

So I inadvertently came across some end-game spoilers, which helped me figure out a few things but honestly raised more questions than answers. So now what I'm wondering is:
So what about the Dawn Machine? Was that an attempt to create some kind of robo-soul-mate? Or is it more of a...physical distraction?
I don't know. And I honesty don't want to follow that trainwreck of a thought any further. All I know is that option is a non-starter too, as immolating all of London isn't any better than the lacre. Choosing between being shot vs. being poisoned isn't really the victory ending I was envisioning for this thing...

Oh well, back to the drawing boards... smile

The revelation of who the Bazaar cares for is a very spoiler-y subject. To provide a few hints, the University storyline reveals the most, in a way.

And thankfully, it is not Feducci. But no, it is nigh impossible to replace/duplicate/re create that lover. But I’m not discouraging you. Feel free to assume. It’s a big-ish world out there.

Actually, a duplicate may be possible, but I suspect she would notice the difference.
