As excellent as a respected family of toads would be, that seems to be a random rumor. Opening the boxes reveals that they are empty, but came from Polythreme for Mr Cups.

Speaking of toads, knot-oracles (ocular toadbeasts) can speak human language once they have consumed a human. They can then share knowledge and secrets. Of course this seems more like a weird monster trait rather than regular neathy sapience.

WHAT OF THE B____Y FOXES?
Have they gone South? Have they gone North? I have scoured most of the Neath in FL and SL, and what is available of the High Wilderness in SS, but I am still to find a d____d fox!

By the word of god (Failbetter games) they have gone south to the elder continent, after a feud with Mr Cups regarding what animal will accompany the relickers.

I don't think it's sapient, but the tell-tale beetle is definitely smarter than a normal insect. Any insect that you can release outside and have it come back to you bearing gifts is definitely smart for a bug.

The Haunted-Looking Dog also speaks. "Cats, cats, everywhere!" I think the "quote" is an interpretation of the dog's body language and haunted appearance, since no other dogs in FL show any sign of uncommon intelligence.
