Hey there! So, this is the thread for us to chat and brainstorm for our heist RP In Red, Underlined.

Just two things before we start --
1. Can we keep both this and the actual RP Teen-rated, please? No explicit gore or smut, and try to stay away from potentially triggering stuff? I just want this to be a safe space for everyone, of all ethnicities and orientations and genders, to have fun! I feel like the FL writers do that really well -- their descriptions can convey something truly deep and visceral in so few words, and with such subtlety, giving your mind just enough fuel for your imagination to take over.
2. Be nice! I've seen some unpleasant stuff on the RPF in other places. Here it's not so bad, even if it occasionally gets strange. One acquaintance told me that they were at a Hallowmas table and got randomly attacked by an ape, which basically turned them off the forums. I'm not trying to call anyone out here, I just want all of us to have fun.

Anyway, I'm bad at long speeches, so just... introduce yourself and your character, post your character sheet, and let's get to know each other! Here's to a long and good game ahead!

Suppose now is as good a time as any to pop up and say how much I'm enjoying reading through this! Latest exchange was especially cute, quite a pick-me-up after a long staff meeting.

Next time on In Red, Underlined (in my head):

I just imagine Nikki riding a rhino screaming like a power drunk maniac, Anactoria sweeping Lee off her feet and onto the zebra she's riding like a dashing fairytale safari knight and Caroline watching approvingly while using an elephant like a chaise lounge.

Tim and I chatted and we do not think there is going to be any major issue between Viric and Caroline. We should be careful about hitting the interests of either side in the Wars of Illusion, but we both want fun RP and have discussed our characters a bit so it should work out. They won't necessarily be on a collision course either way, and we had some ideas on building their mutual respect.

IMO a little contrast in interests and maybe even some confrontation is a good thing! Look at all of us; Master's assistants and revolutionaries, Shroud and Glass, scholars and assassins, admirers of the Duchess and followers of the Widow... putting (or trying to put) our differences aside for a noble cause; Robbing them all blind!

Someone asked me about writing the intro, and I realized I haven't been very clear about explaining it, so I'm reposting my reply here to share it with you guys!

The purpose of the intro is to showcase your character's skills and personality. Think of it as a narrative version of the skills list you wrote in your character bio. Tell us about them. What is their personality? Who do they normally hang around? What's their job? What talents do they have? Establish a normal day for them before their world is changed by the adventure they embark on.

More specifically for this story, I'd appreciate it if you ended the scene with them being approached by Jen. She'll simply say that she has a business proposition for them. That way, once all the introductions are done, I'll cut to a scene showing the PCs gathered at her townhouse, listening to her job offer.

If you're looking for further guidance, try TvTropes' Establishing Character Moment , or this writing website that explains how to introduce your character.

Hope that helps!

[I know from previous RPs how cool it is to hear that people are actually reading, so I'm here to echo Phryne's thoughts - I just got caught up and now I'm very excited to see what will happen next! This is great stuff. Best of luck in your (mis)adventures and I shall be following along ~with interest~. Pretend I'm not here...]

I...um. Well. A thing happened. A very proper and entirely relevant thing! I blame Sly. And if Canvas objects (the player, not the character. Character doesn't get all that much of a vote, I'm afraid~) then it won't be canon but...*clears throat* Uh, if not, then someone says something where Nikki can hear them and she totally makes up the first one just to give Mike a hard time. And then probably has to flee to avoid injury. ^.^;;

Unfortunately the second is far better a poem than her meagre skills could produce, but if the whim seized her she might enlist help from Bohemians with more talent than she. The first is my work -- I couldn't resist some of the word choices here for Nikki's voice. Erem crafted the second. And then I decided why not and recorded both.

So...uh...enjoy? n_n;;

Storm does not like a whistle out of tune,
And spies dislike what they just cannot ken.
Two rivals meeting at sweet Lady Jen's --
One still a lad, the other's past in gloom.
A weasel shows, stiff back-ed to the room,
The spy assumes, though he is mistak-en.
He squares himself not to appear limpen
As over his young rival he swift looms.
Though one a past he has that he denies,
And then the other soon to take a wife,
We hear the rattle of near-flipping lids.
Well-hid the longing in those flashing eyes,
And a heart cold and empty finds new life --
Both yearn to grasp a love that pride forbids.

The rumpled man, in his trenchcoat of brown,
Sought out all manner of things that were hid.
But as he spied everywhere o’er the town,
O'er him there spied -- so sly -- a mustelid.
“Leave off, you weasel!” fiercely snarled the man,
Spying nearby this surveyor befurred,
“Ne'er shall you unravel my cunning plan,
Not bat nor human, weasel, snake nor bird.”
He chased the beast; he tracked its master down:
A youth, Fair-faced, and with bright Titian hair,
He thundered, bluffed he'd rain disaster down;
But sullen lad still matched him glare for glare.

Their words, impassioned, were snarled face to face.
What secret passion did that rage displace?

-Nikki, the Playful Daredevil, leading the constables on merry chases across London at every available opportunity. It's not a good robbery if you didn't get chased~
-Shylarah, waifish, wide-eyed, painfully foreign, entirely untamed. Her search for a way home now leads her to Parabola. There's something about her...

Yeah, if Canvas's player doesn't like this direction, we can drop it. Otherwise ... Well, Lee is perfectly capable of writing sonnets, but she wouldn't admit it.

Oh my god...
I love this beyond words. The fact you took time out of your day to write AND record it... Incredible. The whole thing is beautifully written in itself. You both did a wonderful job, although you might not want to let Canvas hear it! Or you do, I can't blame you. How could I possibly object?

So, we discussed dividing up some of the GMing on the Discord (delicious watchers, this is why you'll see less on the OOC thread now). Here's the list of places! Also, genre descriptions.

Meet at Jen's townhouse in the West End the night before.
I'll GM this. It'll be a standard scene that involves Jen dividing up the roles and teams, perhaps with some suggestions IC, and mention some of the tricks and traps they have to be wary of. The actual plans will be discussed on Discord so that we keep the story exciting for our watchers.

In the morning, head to the Labyrinth of Tigers to rob the Bazaar's Emporium. Release the people in the Third Coil while we're at it. We're not stealing the animals, since Anactoria objects to that.
While I have some ideas here, I'd be happy to give this up. I haven't gotten very deep into the Labyrinth, and I haven't done Theological Husbandry either.

Go to the Shuttered Palace together. Pop by the Cellars to persuade Alfred to help us if we anger his sister. Rob the VPC and the couple while the wedding is going on.
I definitely want to GM this. The encounter with Alfred will be Lovecraftian but also oddly fluffy. VPC will be straightforward. Like effortless, because he's such a useless man. The couple on the other hand... that will have some big reveals about the Royal Family, the Presbyterate, and Red Honey.

Split into two groups. This seems like the best way to get around everyone's personal issues with robbing them. One, with Jen, stays in the Palace to rob the Duchess.
Since I'm staying in the palace, I should probably GM this, and I really want to. There are two options:
1. A Mission Impossible, stealthy heist that's mostly action and fun.
2. We go with the twist we discussed on Discord. It'll be high-pressure, forcing the characters to bond if they want to survive.

The other group heads to Ladybones Road to rob the Brass Embassy.
Someone else will have to GM this!

Meet at the Ministry of Public Decency to rob that. I headcanon that it's at Ladybones Road.
Also willing to give this up.

Head to Concord Square to steal from the police.
Again, I'm not too fussed about this, so someone else can take over!

Go to Wilmot's End to steal from the Foreign Office. Be careful of Snuffers.
I want to GM this. I've played the Mysteries of the Foreign Office, and I plan to make this creepy and unsettling, of the psychological horror genre.

Head to Veilgarden. IRL this is a fashionable neighborhood. I headcanon that it would be a popular residence. Slowcake's Amanuensis will be robbed here.
This is up for grabs -- sounds fun, but if anyone wants to GM, feel free!

Go to the Flit. Distribute some of our loot among the Urchins and the Topsy Man in exchange for their assistance and not selling us out, and also because it's a nice thing to do.
Not really a scene, more a chance for tooth-achingly sweet fluff.

Steal Mrs Plenty's mirrors.
This I want to do. It will, again, be horror of the Japanese creepy mindscrew variety, if that's okay. And it will involve a big reveal about Jen.

Meet at Watchmaker's Hill to steal from the Cheery Man and bring down his criminal empire.
I'd like to GM this too. Mainly because Jen has a very personal reason for wanting to bring him down.

Head to the Docks to rob the Gracious Widow and sabotage her criminal empire too, as well as stealing her peach brandy.
Someone else can GM this if they want!

Back to Veilgarden! This time, we rob February. Distribute some of our ill-gotten gains around the Bohemians to help them with their career.
I'd rather someone else do this. I don't have much experience with the Calendar Council, and I won't do it justice.

Head to the University to rob Sommerset.
Again, I have no particular attachment to this, so someone more enthusiastic can take over!

Return to Jen's townhouse to count the loot and celebrate.
Bear in mind that the orgies were just a joke!

I'm cutting Mahogany Hall and Doubt Street, but if anyone's keen on them, they can do the GMing for those!

I'm liking how everyone is facing the worst-case scenario in this first heist and it makes everything very interesting and fun to read, but it makes me wonder, how are people going to talk themselves into continuing the heist when things have already gotten so off-course just in the Labyrinth of Tigers? Do they really want to risk having the same thing happen somewhere like the Brass Embassy? Devils are two times as dangerous as tigers, and they have... "Interrogation Chambers" they'd gleefully subject burglars to for a few weeks at minimum.

The esteemed anthropologist observes with interest the collar-grabbing and pottery-throwing customs of the London Longshanks. Perhaps with more observation, patterns of regional and gang-specific variations will become apparent.

( Hello, just popping in here to let you know that at least a few of us from the #Argo IRC roleplay channel are following this story. Now I've just read all the intros posted so far and must say, what a delightful gathering of well-developed and well-written characters we have here! I especially liked Telemachia and Nikki, also that very efficient butler - great idea for a character! Can't wait to see the capers you folks will get up to! smile )

Player Name: Erem
Character: Telemachia Lee
Gender/Pronouns: Feminine (for character); masculine or neutral (for player)

Skills/Abilities:
  • The Martial Sciences: From childhood, Telemachia Lee has been training enthusiastically in all the arts of war: tactics, strategy, logistics; horsemanship, artillery, navigation, scouting; the command of troops; marksmanship. But her true love is hand-to-hand combat, in which she trains endlessly and engages regularly. This can bias her thinking: if there are multiple solutions to a problem, she will generally opt for the one that involves fisticuffs and explosions.
  • Audacity: Lee often acts before she thinks, but this generally works out well for her. She has a keen intuition that analyzes a situation quicker - and usually better - than her conscious mind. She’s splendid at reacting to the unexpected, and at remaining alert even when drunk, distracted, or asleep. But she easily becomes bored or impatient with tasks that require long concentration. She’d rather just jump in and figure things out as she goes. She’s also fearless - a trait which can be a problem as well as an asset.
  • Aristocrat: Lee is of Revolutionary sentiment and will allow no one to call her by her title. She lives among Dockers and acts and speaks like they do. But she carries herself with the unconscious self-assurance of one who was born and bred to rule. There clings to her some hint of the rake slumming. She has good taste and can't help it. Servants can't bully her. When the Constables arrive to arrest a group of workers on strike, she sometimes has to demand to be arrested with them. And when she barks an order, people trained to obedience will obey without thinking.
  • Black Wings Drunk: During her hunt for the Vake, Lee drank enough Black Wings Absinthe to kill a regiment. Her body adapted, and now it can use the stuff. It heightens her senses, pain tolerance, healing factor, and ability to “prowl.” It still, however, gets her drunk. When in need of special fortification, she takes a sip of “the good stuff,” which is freezing cold to the touch and makes an ominous ringing sound when she pulls the flask out of its protective container.
Appearance: Tall and athletic, with muscles that pop out when she moves. Black hair cut very short. Cool grey-blue eyes. A confident bearing that verges on outright arrogance. A face of striking beauty that she makes no effort to accentuate. She wears masculine clothing, but expertly tailored or made bespoke to fit her figure; it's of very good quality but the keen observer will note that it has been frequently (albeit skillfully) mended. Unless the occasion absolutely forbids it, she wears a revolver on her hip, uses a length of anchor-chain as a belt, and has a pair of brass knuckles ready to hand. She has a number of scars and tattoos. Her most recent tattoo is of a double-bladed axe on her left forearm. Her most recent scar is in a place that she’ll only show you if you ask right. She smokes skinny black cigars, drinks like a fish, and ogles attractive women. Despite her habits, she remains surprisingly clean. In particular, her fingernails are always trimmed, and she frequently cleans them with a knife.

Lee has a celebrity look-alike.

Personality: Lee has excellent manners, but she can rarely be bothered to use them. When drinking, brawling and womanizing (often unsuccessfully, in the last case) in low-class establishments, she is in her element, proud, fearless, and brash. When she stops to think, she is cool, reserved, and courteous. On these latter occasions, her aristocratic (if old-fashioned) accent and manners are likely to reassert themselves. Her confidence is real, and rock-solid - except in matters of romance. There, she’s faking confidence, and she often overcompensates.

Backstory:
Lee comes from a long line of Marcher Lords who held a barony on the Welsh border and frequently battled Welsh bandits, from whom they were barely distinguishable. Over centuries of this, the members of this family were bred for war. Her father, Baron Ulysses Lee, was a retired colonel and a widower. He taught his daughter everything he knew - a great wealth of soldiering skill, and precious little else. The villagers muttered that he had gone cracked and thought her a boy, but she adored him and soaked up every bit of knowledge he had to teach her. Unfortunately, he knew almost nothing about women. Her adolescent approaches to village girls were failures and caused significant scandal. Her father always supported her, but after his death, Lee’s aunts became determined to marry her off to some eligible young man. She ran away to join the Army, only to find that they would not accept women. At last she fled to the Neath, to live as a self-proclaimed Soldier of Fortune. (It sounds better than her official title of “Rat-Catcher.”) She’s enjoying the life she’s chosen, but it’s been a lonely one - only recently has she made some real friends.

12/22/2017
Player Name: Spooky
Character: Lady Caroline Karnstein of Styria
Gender/Pronouns: My PC and I are both women, she/her

Skills/Abilities:
Caroline is a talented artist, writer, and poet. Moreover, she is known for being charming, ingratiating, and intriguing. They say few are quite the same after meeting her. She is more known for her raw abilities than great skill. She is strong, for anyone much less a woman and quick. An agile climber with very sharp senses. She is less a talented fighter than someone stronger, faster and heartier than most of her competition (outside the tomb-colonies, anyway), as a detective she is as march sharp senses as a trained eye, she is less an expert at stealth than someone utterly soundless the shadows tend to cling to like cobwebs. This puts her on par with people with similar skill, but not above. A true master thief knows tricks she does not, for example. She is too much of a dilettante to apply herself to actually mastering much besides art, literature, conversation, and seduction.

Appearance: Caroline has pale, almost consumptive looking skin, and long, thick midnight black hair. Her eyes are sunken in her face and a piercing green that often catches the light like a cat’s. Her nose and the shape of her eyes almost a little hawkish, high cheekbones. She is average height for a Victoria n lady, and almost always wears black or dark purple dresses and silver jewelry. She is neither particularly thick or thin. Her breathy, contralto voice has a chef’s salad of an accent with strongly detectable French, German, and Slavic elements, a keen ear might even detect Italian. To the more discerning ear the Slavic accents are more central European; Czech, Slovene, Croat. All this is mixed and seasoned with a Dietrich purr.

Caroline is not beautiful per se. She is however alluring and memorable. She draws the eye even from across the room, and is hard to look away from. Long after a conversation one might see her face when they close their eyes, or see her in their dreams, perhaps after being lulled to sleep by a half-heard sultry purr.

Personality: Caroline is friendly and ingratiating, helpful and seductive. She is vocal about being homosexual. Down here she is especially well known among Society, the Great Game and especially the Bohemians. However, one finds other groups from Constables to Criminals, Dockworkers to Tomb-Colonists, have a lot good to say. It seems almost any faction in Fallen London has her fingerprints on them, showing her influence; of course, the same almost seems true of corsets. Hell seems the only ones she has not cultivated. Caroline is a member of the Parthenaeum and House of Chimes (the latter of whom let her in for being “privately talented”), runs the Salon The London Labrys for women, has a newspaper of the same name, and is known in Veilgarden as one of the most notorious Nocturnals the Neath has ever seen. Her output is prodigious, and she spends a lot of time musing others, especially other Nocturnals.

Backstory: To hear her tell it, Caroline was chased down into the depths of the Neath by “An angry mob of husbands, fathers and brothers” but she is elusive about the facts. She was born to a noble family in Austria and claims to be a Countess. Her hometown in Styria does not exist anymore, she says. After a stint in jail early on for trying to steal Hesperidean Cider, she has become a fixture in the Palace and Veilgarden, and commonly seen in the Flit and Mahogany Hall.

Other: Persistent rumors suggest Caroline is more than human. Particularly those who claim to have seen her scale a building without help or lift a small hansom over her head. The jury is out on the truth, but a number of rumors claim Caroline’s actual backstory can be found in the fiction section of your local booksellers.

Player Name: Slyblue (Or just Sly!)
Character: Michael Barrows
Gender/Pronouns: Male/He/Him (Character), He/Him or She/Her (Player)

Skills/Abilities:
- Light Fingers: A lifetime on the rooftops inevitably cultivates a bright curiosity for objects that aren't necessarily your own. Objects that you might borrow, now and then, and conveniently forget to return, unless they fetch a lower price than you originally thought. Now, years after graduating from the Flit's school of petty robbers, pick-pocketing is no longer a necessity, but a hobby. One he happens to be particularly good at, if his hoard of stolen, tear-stained letters, encrypted messages and low quality jewels is to be believed.

- ”Oi, long'uns!”: In the far corners of Wick Street and Hobbe Lane, there once was a red haired youth with a funny accent. He would sit in the shadow of the rookeries, hiding behind a long, funny gun, with a tooth-gaped smile and a keen eye for vital spots. The urchin gangs seldom forget their own. The Naughts, in particular, remember their most skilled sniper fondly. Even if he's gone and made himself “respectable” now, they know – His skills have only gotten better since he left. (Tch. The youth of today. Yesterday. Whenever.)

- Clear Eyes, Clear Mind: Sometimes the Wind talks to people. Sometimes it tells them to drop rocks, shoot, or poison other people. It's okay if the Wind tells you to do it. Michael believes the Wind will talk to him, one day, when he's ready to receive its message. In the meantime, his sense of “right” and “wrong” are usually dictated by the circumstances, which doesn't leave much time to overthink most situations. It is what it is, and it will be done. Why worry about it?

- Weasel Whistler: Some people believe weasels are clever enough to speak, and wise enough to know not to. Through a rather obscure system of whistles, murmurs and strategic feeding, Michael has almost managed to understand their curious, silent language, and get a selected few to perform small tasks for him. Do they see him as a leader? A father figure? A human slave? You might just have to ask them yourself.

(Short version: Master Pickpocket but slightly distracted by shiny stuff, basic urchin skill-set (and connections) + good sniper, doesn't dream/can't remember his dreams, morally ambiguous, has a small spy network made out of weasels.)

Appearance: (Face reference) Above average height (Around 175 cm), compact build (Toned, not particularly big), pale and lightly freckled skin. A jagged scar splits his forehead in two, running down the right side of his nose, but is partly hidden by his curly mop of reddish brown hair.
Can be usually found wearing workmen clothes that never fit him quite right, unless the occasion demands for a nicer outfit. -Then- he can be found tugging nervously at his collar and eyeing people's clothes with open dismay.
His fingers are stained with black, both underneath and around his bitten nails, and seem unlikely to get cleaner. A tell-tale sign of his daytime job as a printer.

Personality:
Michael wears his heart on his sleeve, and is completely unrepentant about it. Irrespective of the mood of the conversation, he will usually voice his opinion without considering how this might affect the ones around him, as most social cues fly right over his head. While this hasn't earned him many friends on the card tables, his friends know he is sincere and means well – even when he's being a bit too blunt about certain...delicate matters.
He is also rather vocal when it comes to defending the urchins' (and his own) junk-shop religion. They venerate the wind: they have a prayer for every breeze. Questioning Storm's motives, whatever they might be, is a painfully easy way to ruin his opinion of you.

Backstory:
He was plucked from an orphanage at a young age, and spent most of his early years living with a Scotswoman and her family. That much, he can remember. He also remembers a few Gaelic words and uses them sparingly, as his mother would, but otherwise has no connection or interest when it comes to the Surface. There is a small but noticeable gap between his early years and the day he joined the Naughts, which he refuses to elaborate on – choosing instead to focus on the gangs' eternal rivalry and the finer details of pushing large rocks from tall buildings.

Other: Apologies in advance to anyone who knows how actually write phonetic Scottish accents ;; I'm trying my best, I swear!

It's awesome to see what you guys have come up with! I think we'll have quite the caper crew here smile

I know everyone is going to be really busy over the holidays, so I'll just post a couple of stuff I hope you guys can think about before we start the actual RP?

Who are the targets of the heist?
I figure everyone will have different opinions on this. Here's a tentative list I drew up, and spoilers for Neathy lore ahead:

Definite targets
  • London's newlyweds. I don't think anyone actually likes Feducci or the Princess, and even if you did, they're so full of secrets that are just begging to be uncovered! Think of all the evidence and mysteries in their chambers! Also, they're rich and getting married, and who wants to bet they have wedding presents there? IC reason: Jen holds a grudge against the Princess for trying to feed her to her sister, and even though being held in esteem by the Generous Princess is nice, it doesn't make up for being, you know, eaten alive.
  • The Duchess. Her backstory and her cats are fascinating and I feel like she'd have a lot of secrets (and makeup) in her chambers. Also, it provides a lot of potential for stories involving the Second City, Parabola, and the war between the cats and the Fingerkings. IC reason: Jen knows about the Cantigaster, and she wants to find out more.
  • The Widow (Gracious, not Soft-hearted). Again, she has a fascinating backstory and lots of potential if you want to write about the Fourth City. IC reason: she and Jen are business rivals, and Jen would like nothing better than to have some confirmed information on her.
  • The Veteran Privy Councillor. Because he's a jerk who doesn't pay child maintenance, gets up-and-coming artists kicked out of court, and nobody likes him.

Possible targets

  • Mr Inch. We have animal handlers on the team, breaking into the Labyrinth of Tigers sounds like a possibility.
  • Mahogany Hall. Good for stories about the Wars of Illusion and Parabola.
  • The Masters and/or the Bazaar if you're in a risky mood. I'm not too keen -- it's OOC for Jen to do that -- but if you guys are interested, I'm open.
  • The Royal Bethlehem. I'm including it simply because it seems wrong to leave it out when you're writing about almost all the other monarchs who made deals with the Masters to save their beloved. You could probably create a plot about the Fallen Cities, the Masters, the Bazaar, and the deals made. Truthfully, I have no idea what we'd steal from there, though.
  • The Clathermonts. Possible storyline involving the Great Game.
  • The Brass Embassy. Jen alternates between living there and at her townhouse, it doesn't really make sense for her to rob her home, but if you guys want to, I'm fine with that too. Might be a good storyline for any Shepherds of Souls.
  • The Foreign Office. Not only do you open up stories involving the Great Game, you also get to discuss the Face, the Teeth, and the Vake. Not to mention, Snuffers as enemies would be interesting.
  • The Cheery Man. Mainly for IC reasons for Jen -- despite being a business rival, a part of her hopes that when his criminal empire falls, he can retire and reconcile with the Last Constable and stop his life of crime.
  • The Ministry of Public Decency and/or the Museum of Mistakes -- as suggested by Shy! It seems like a cool idea Big Grin

That's all I have, but feel free to add to the list! And if there's anyone you don't want to steal from, we can probably work something out.

How/When are we going to start the RP?
Is the 27th okay? It'll be after the Christmas season so we'll all have more time.

I propose that I'll open up the thread with a post introducing Jen's character and showcasing her skills, which will end with her going to gather a crew for a job. Then, you guys can post your introductory scenes, which can maybe conclude with being approached by Jen so the story is tied together? Once all the introductions are made, then I'm thinking of a scene at Jen's townhouse where everyone meets each other and she presents her proposition for the heist.

Do you think that works? I'm totally open to brainstorming and suggestions!

Anyway, just let me know what you guys think!

Jimmy's right, Erem. Gotta have that gothic flavor or it isn't FL. ^.^ *waves to the watchers* Actually, I was reminded a bit of the text from the storylet that's a Notability check and then a surprise package on a success. Watching our affairs with great interest, indeed.

Any time you're writing with others, especially a group, there's gonna be some necessary weasels. Some things move before people respond to stuff that came before. Conversations especially have issues -- and the longer the posts, the more evident such things get. I generally favor participation over things like length or worrying too much about just how all the dialogue fits together. ^.^;; So long as we remember it's an rp and not a novel, I think we'll be fine. From what I've seen, everyone involved is more than merely a capable writer.

The odds of people not talking on arrival are slim, but I can forgo the chatter to start. Phryne, collabs are great, but only if it involves everyone in the scene -- and if you have all the players involved in the scene, then it just gets messy with no gain. I personally am a huge fan of being able to weave stuff together, but not everyone is, and far too often collabs look like alternating paragraphs by different players. Sure, it keeps the post looking like it's not super short, but in the end all it does is keep folks not in the doc from seeing stuff as it gets finished.

And don't get me started on the times that people collabed on a post without including everyone there, took over, raced past the other players -- and took forever doing it. *shudder*

In short, I'm a huge fan of gdocs and other collaborative writing software, although my kindle won't do gdocs and I actually prefer stuff with authorship colors personally (which can be done, in a pinch, with formatting for gdocs). I've just had bad experiences.

There was a huge rp that reached a finish line?! Color me impressed, Phryne! That's a rare thing indeed.

Lia, Nikki would never break the glass.
...she says, after the woman just shattered a cathedral window.

Timing, Shy. >.<;

But no, she'd pick the lock and open the window like a proper thief. And it's not to surprise Lady Jen, it's just a matter of it being closer than the door, that's all!

--
Lady of Cold Steel, Lady of the Flit, Lady Alyssana Grey. A formidable woman, hard to read and slow to trust. Darkness lurks inside her.

Alts: (please direct all inquiries to Alys & say who they're for)
-Nikki, the Playful Daredevil, leading the constables on merry chases across London at every available opportunity. It's not a good robbery if you didn't get chased~
-Shylarah, waifish, wide-eyed, painfully foreign, entirely untamed. Her search for a way home now leads her to Parabola. There's something about her...
-Dr. Maxwell Thomas, a kindhearted physician who can't stand to see suffering. Moral to a fault, even to his own detriment. Unlucky in love.
I would rather be taken for a fool than deny aid where it is needed.
-Angie, the Cheeky Sharpshooter. Got her start with the Regiment and proudly operated their cannon for years. Rowdy, rough, and among the best shots in London.

Actually, there's at least two now that the Shade-Hunt's officially concluded! smile

Regarding collabs via google docs or whatever: I'm personally a huge fan of it, but I agree it's not always the best option. Obviously, you need to be very open about it and make sure that all the players involved know it's happening and have enough time to write their bit. I don't know where all of you're from, but on the IRC we have RPers from all over the world, so doing conversations with small individual posts would basically always leave at least a few people behind - that's why collab docs are often the best solution for us to make sure no one gets left too far behind. If all players in a group are from more or less the same time zone, that's less of an issue, of course.

Opening windows is good, Shy! Stops them from breaking (sorry, can't resist).

Anactoria -- Tanner's a bit of a flirt, but give him a chance! And I look forward to learning more about this brother -- he's becoming quite the mystery.

Sly, I loved that peek into Michael's head! He's a lot wiser and a better judge of character than I gave him credit for. Only time will reveal if his assessment of Jen is right, but it is poetic, I can tell you that! Your writing voice is so unique and enjoyable.

Caroline, I enjoyed your perspective too! There's something stately and dignified about your narrative that I adore. And the relationship between her, Lee, and possibly Anactoria... This has the potential to be very interesting!

Poor, poor Canvas! I felt sorry for him and how flustered and out of place he felt. His evaluation of everyone is fascinating, and I look forward to seeing what happens between him and Mike. As expected from a detective, he knows everyone in the room!

Hubris has remarkable hidden depths, as always. I didn't quite realise he's tied to the Game until now. Can't wait to see more of this excellent and discreet butler!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this! And the various reactions to Jen's dress made me laugh. "Damn near unsheathed" and Canvas' incoherent spluttering are both so funny!

Cosmo, Tanner, take your time. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Hey, Michael is up! I love his perspective - he sees things in a way that's different from anyone else.

Oh, and that reminds me: I libeled him. Michael is actually very handsome! It's just that Lee doesn't care.

Erem, I loved your scene! Lee's perspective is so interesting. The way the Black Wings work with her body is fascinating, and opens up so much story potential. Her analysis -- both when it comes to the others in the room, as well as her remarks about looking for a trap -- are really interesting peeks into how her mind works. And I like her butler! He sounds like Hubris, but older.

The character relationships are beginning to take shape, and in ways I never imagined. I'm fairly new to the forums, so I didn't quite realise how many players and characters have known each other before the heist. And is that a hint of romance and rivalry I see? This is going to be fascinating!

Nice to meet you, everyone! I look forward to roleplaying with you. Please feel free to send me a calling card in-game so we can get acquainted. This is my character sheet.

Player Name: Tanner Price, but just Tanner will do.
Character: Tanner Price (Originally created before I started roleplaying, but I’m embracing it.)
Gender/Pronouns: Traditional male (He/Him/His), but never “Sir”. He hates being addressed with formal titles he has not earned. Call him “Citizen” or “Captain” if you must, but “Tanner” will always be preferable.

Skills/Abilities:

The People’s Man: Tanner is most sympathetic to the concerns of the oppressed and deeply downtrodden. Although he’s most intimately connected with high society and blends in well, he is closely-knit amidst the poor, the artist, and the revolutionary, and even regards his Rubbery neighbors with egalitarian sentiments.
Affable Leader: He is well-respected and occasionally loved by his subordinates and peers. Being a captain among pirates does not go unchallenged, so if his headstrong nature, willpower, and skill won’t preserve his place at the top, his eminence and likability will. He can charm people easily and has no trouble getting others on his side, even influencing some to let certain unscrupulous deeds of his slide under the rug.
Survivalist: Knows a great deal of essential tricks to self-preservation. When left to his own devices, even in remote and distant wilds away from life’s civilized comforts, he can make do with what he has. He’s intelligent, perceptive, patient, and observant. When sneaking around where he doesn’t belong, he is quiet, careful, and extraordinarily thorough, often discovering secrets other prowlers might miss. If ever detected, he’s quick on his feet and makes a swift getaway, relying on his speed as well as smoke pellets and blinding agents to escape and lay low until attention dies down.
Skilled Combatant: He’s most adept at fighting with his black steel cutlass, but also proficient with a pepperbox pistol and improvised weapons. His creativity in combat has made enemies wary around writing supplies and even table scraps while in his presence.

Appearance: While it is atypical of most seafarers to spend much thought on their appearance, Tanner takes pride in his and enjoys looking both fashionable and physically alluring. His deep cerulean eyes, clean-shaven face, and long, dark, and wavy brown hair worn just below his shoulders paint him in the light of a debonair gentleman. Occasionally he has been known to tie his hair back in a man bun, especially when working late at night on projects with his kiln. Tanner appears youthful and in his mid-20s with average height and weight. Despite his slenderness compared to other sailors, he is firmly muscled and relies on quick action and skill over brute strength to outperform opponents. He is built for endurance — something those who know him intimately know very well.

Personality: Tanner was raised by women whose entire livelihood depends on people liking them. He is very charming, flirtatious, intelligent, perceptive, and usually friendly. These traits make him quite popular among London’s social climbers and aristocracy. However, his father brought him up as a sailor in a business where only the tough survive. Tanner is bold, passionate, direct, and headstrong. Pick a fight with him by pen, sword, or spoken word, and he will disarm you all the same. Although he can be ferocious and ruthless when pursuing his own interests, he is genuinely gracious to most and enjoys making people feel comfortable. This is why he prefers to keep his professional career and social life apart from one another.

Backstory: Born in the Neath from the union of a high-class prostitute and an American sailor, Tanner was raised primarily by his mother and his menagerie of aunts — other working girls who entertained clients for Mr. Wines. Eventually after repeated visits with Sylvia over the years, his father Mason decided to marry her and help raise their son. However, money was tight in the family and neither could afford to retire — Sylvia’s money mostly going to room and board in the lavish brothel, and Mason making too little as an able-bodied seaman to afford a proper home — so the other ladies of the Moonstone Masque did their best to help give Tanner a decent upbringing. They taught him survival skills — most notably, people skills. Tanner can fit in with just about any crowd, and always seems to know just what to say. He favors high society, but has always had an artistic and creative streak.

His father picked up work as a deckhand at Wolfstack Docks, forever leaving the Surface and teaching Tanner the ins and outs of maritime labor. Tanner became skilled, tough, and dangerous, eventually getting chartered out on a major contract to transport diamonds from Polythreme. There, his growing greed, hedonism, and hunger for notoriety took over, and he overthrew his own crew to take control of the vessel. When the captain tried to stop him, Tanner cut him down, sinking his body overboard and stealing the black steel cutlass he still carries to this day. He bribed the crew by splitting their cargo amongst them, depriving it all from Mr. Stones, and beginning a life of piracy.

His exploits at sea have made him rich, and he uses that money to afford the finest pleasures high society can offer. He takes care of his family, still loving them dearly while keeping his professional life and social life separate. Still, despite his success at villainy, he occasionally feels moral conflict — even guilt — and wishes to use his skills in the interest of a greater good. For now, he is belaying his career as a captain in pursuit of other exploits, both selfish and altruistic. Perhaps in the process he may even find something — or someone — worth living for.

Other: He aspires to one day leave the Neath and retire on the Surface, a place that he has never been. If he should die and be condemned to a possible eternity beneath the Earth, perhaps a firkin of Hesperidean Cider would be the ultimate going away gift — whether from loved ones near and dear or rivals eager to see him gone.

Hello! I've updated the RP thread with the next scene. Just a reminder of the plan:

Lady Jen Black wrote:

1. I post a scene where Jen is getting ready, preparing the room for the party, and then goes to the door. The bell rings, and she gives a generic greeting.
2. Yall post yourselves responding to Jen and entering the house. React to Jen and each other if you want, but don't converse. That will take too long, as Caroline said.
3. Jen walks into the room once everyone gets there. She presents her plan.
4. Reactions from you folks. Conversation, questions about the plan, impressions of the others in the room, social interaction, basically what Erem described.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! I am so excited about this story -- especially the readership it's attracted. We're not even at the heist yet and I am already so in awe of all the creativity and undeniable skill with the quill that's been showcased!

EDIT: Oh, and if you're wondering what Jen is wearing...

Hi! I'm Lia, and I RP as Lady Jen Black. Hope to get to know you guys better!

Player Name: Lia
Character: Lady Jen Black
Gender/Pronouns: Female; she/her (for both player and character)

Skills/Abilities:
Knife in the Dark: Jen has a gift for knife fighting, honed by training from childhood. She prefers throwing knives to take her enemies out from a distance, but if the situation calls for it, she’ll get down and dirty in a close fight.
Awesomeness by Analysis: The moment Jen enters a room, her mind starts searching for the exits and how best to get to them if she needs to escape. She can’t talk to someone without sizing them up, determining their threat level, and figuring out how to take them down if necessary. This is excellent when she’s in danger, but not so much when she’s safe at home talking to her friends.
Little Black Book: More like little black room, a place where she keeps her files on everyone important in London and anyone who looks like they have potential to be important.
Cat-Like Tread: Light on her feet and Jen knows it. It’s useful when stealing documents, when assassinating her targets in their own homes, and when she wants to sneak up on people.
Femme Fatale: Beauty, pain, charm, poison, lust and desire are all powerful weapons, and Jen has learned to wield them with the same skill she does her knives.

Appearance:
Tall and athletic, with the slender build of a gymnast. Has thick black hair which she ties up in a ponytail and cold green eyes. An air of danger surrounds her. She stalks around with hunter in every line of her posture. Her bronze complexion and large, upturned eyes suggest ancestry from the Far East -- more accurately, India. Pretty in a cold way (marred by a scar across the bridge of her nose and the arrogant smirk she wears) and she knows it, dressing in fitted clothes to show off her figure. She has the audacity to wear trousers everywhere she goes, even to court, and the style to pull it off. Never seen without her dark green coat, which conceals the knives strapped to her forearms and thighs. (If you want a look at her, see here -- it’s updated from the original portraits in my bio. This is her celebrity lookalike.)

Personality:
While Jen enjoys planning and putting her dreams into action, she sometimes dreams too big and fails to consider the consequences of her plans due to sheer arrogance. She is equally willing to use brutality and threats or charm and guile to get her way. A classic Slytherin -- ambitious, ruthless and cunning. Her cold and distant demeanour protects her from suffering the pain of betrayal. To those who have won her trust, she will be loyal to the bitter end.

Backstory:
Jen doesn’t talk much about her past. What is known is that when Lord Black was declared innocent after having been imprisoned for years for the murder of his cousin's family, he left London for a time. When he returned, it was with Jen, widely assumed to be his daughter after he declared her the Black heiress. However, just like him, Jen would much rather be up to no good than conform to society’s expectations. She runs a criminal gang known as the Dregs, an offshoot of a Dutch syndicate. Its legendary leaders, Dirtyhands and the Wraith, have indicated that she is their official successor in the Neath. Rumour has it that she fights just like the twin Assassins who came to London some years ago, although nobody knows for sure.

Hubris Glamore

Player Name: Hubris is fine, although I more commonly go by Wilco in my wider social circles so that would also do if it saves on confusion.
Character: Mr. Hubris Glamore
Gender/Pronouns: He/Him

Skills/Abilities:

Short version

Good at navigating social situations and discreetly fading into the background when he doesn't require the attention.
Better at causing harm in varying degrees.

To be more specific
Well versed in social etiquette and foreign culture,
Has cultivated good relationships with the staff of noble houses and has an arm's length connection to the Great Game.
Quite adept at being beneath notice until called upon, as a good butler does.
Attentive to the needs of his employer and potential threats.
Trained in the use of rifles.
Fond of improvising weapons with what's close at hand.
Extremely dangerous in close quarters combat.

Can also do an excellent job of managing your affairs, ensuring you look your best, the house is tidy and providing a good cup of tea. Sometimes you just need a butler, not a henchman.

Appearance:
A tall man in his late thirties with lithe frame that suggests a more athletic build in the past.
Caucasian and slightly pale with greenish-grey eyes.
Neatly combed black hair with a bit of salt and pepper flecks of grey starting to appear throughout and a short, neatly trimmed mustache and beard.
Usually dresses in tidy suits in unobtrusive and forgettable colours, generally these include gloves, necktie and top hat.

Personality:
Polite and discreet most of the time. May deviate to viciously polite towards individuals showing unnecessary contempt or open aggression. In private conversation with a trusted confidante or a current client he'll often speak more frankly.
Puts a lot of stock in keeping ones word and is loathe to do so himself for anything other than an extremely good reason. By the same token he views those that do break their word quite poorly and will often refuse to do repeat business with them.
Speaks with a calm, measured cadence. Notable Swiss accent although you can tell he's picked up something of the London accent occasionally, usually when he's speaking phrases or slang he's picked up in the Neath.

Backstory:
Originally an unremarkable junior butler to a noble house, he became a Swiss diplomat's aide and came to London as a pawn in the Great Game. After a move in the game by another power wiped out the rest of his circle, he went to ground, finding employment with his skillset intermittantly belowstairs in Society or as an enforcer for less savoury types.
Once this had been going on long enough for him to amass a solid amount of funds, he expended them on an office in the Bazaar Sidestreets and some altogether nicer unobtrusive and tidy suits and opened Silk Solutions, promoting himself as a discreet and respectable Solutions Consultant, something like a sort of mercenary butler. Trading on his resume as a butler and diplomat, he promises confidentiality and discretion.
Organising a complex society dinner party? Call Mr. Glamore.
Need someone to assist a visitor from the surface with London's culture shock? Call Mr. Glamore.
Really, really want a business rival grievously harmed in a very particular way to send a message? Call Mr. Glamore.
He'll speak not a word about what he did for you so long as you hold up your end of the arrangement. Professional and discreet.

Other: Between contracts, now that he's no longer beholden to a particular household or a foreign power, he's developed something of an interest in esoterica and artefacts, but would much rather consult someone better versed in that branch of the Neath's mysteries than consider himself more than a hobbyist. A group of his friends once sought the Name. Their fates were enough to convince him its best to get expert opinions on things like that.

Hubris Glamore is an ambitious gentleman with entirely more schemes than is healthy.

Happy to entertain all manner of interactions and has a fondness for roleplaying.

12/22/2017
Player Name: Anna
Character: The Cosmopolitan/ Cosmo/ Dr Evelyn Beck
Gender/Pronouns: They/ them for character, feminine for player

Skills/Abilities:
-The Doctor: trained in surgery and has served as an army medic, and is, therefore, very calm under pressure. Military training (and private-school cricket training) means that they are handy in a fight if needs be, but has always been more of a scholar than a fighter.
-The Detective: Has played for the other side and knows the mistakes to avoid. Observant and very good at noticing small details which could trip up the most carefully formulated of plans.
-The Linguist: Apart from their native English, which they speak with soft received pronunciation, they are fluent in Greek, French, and Persian, as well as proficient in German, Arabic, Mandarin, Sanskrit, and Dutch. Learning the language of the Correspondence. However, quite lacking in the Latin department, much to the amusement of their old Cambridge colleagues. Could be useful if anything needs translating.
-Devil may care: 'By God, what are they doing. They'll get themselves killed!'. Usually manages to come out of it with only a few wounds and a little trauma.

Appearance: Here

Personality: Polite and serious. Will be snide when irritated and their veneer of deference starts to crack; their quiet confidence will transform into outright arrogance. Considers themselves to be an upstanding, law-abiding member of society, but is easily swayed by the promise of money, wine, and secrets. Usually quite fatigued, but is cheerful and hospitable with friends.
Backstory:
A doctor on the surface, transferring focus to the history of medicine after leaving the army. Continued to travel in order to research old texts, and consequently met their future wife, an interpreter, in Persia. Had been cooking up a plan to travel to Neath with her after hearing rumours of the Correspondence down below, but didn't have much choice after being (mistakenly) arrested for her murder. Is now rebuilding academic career at Benthic.

LOL. Yeah well. Some conflict is good for a RPing group, long as it is not too much.

Player Name: shylarah, Shy
Character: the Playful Daredevil, Nikkolaira "Nikki" Wyatt
Gender/Pronouns: she and I are both female, and use feminine pronouns

Age: mid/late 20s
Appearance: Nikki is of average height, an athletic woman with generous curves who loves showing them off. Her hair is blonde, though on occasion she has been known to splotch-dye it so it looks calico. Her eyes are closer to amber-gold than proper brown, and they gleam brightly. She has a a wide smile, an expressive face, rosy cheeks, and an upturned nose. She prefers the colors black (or dark gray) and amber, with cosmogone being a particularly Neathly fondness. For her clothing, she makes sure it won't get in the way of her many activities -- absolutely nothing fluttery or easily torn. Beyond that, she likes to look good, and she tends towards common skirts and blouses, and has a shocking fondness for slacks, which make her long legs look particularly fine. She has a variety of pouches and pockets in all her outfits, many holding useful items: a striker, a ball of sturdy twine, her second-best lockpicks, a couple knives, treats for various animals, a fountain pen with permanent ink, stinkbombs, smoke bombs, flashbangs, a few clockwork gadgets....

Personality: Nikki is first and foremost a free spirit. She is wild, always looking for adventure. She's an adrenaline junkie, actively courting danger and considered by many to be a bit mad. Her luck is excellent, and she is as good at getting out of trouble as she is at finding it. Her smile is ever-present, her laughter bright, and her intense love of life readily apparent in everything she does. She is a playful woman, often expressing childlike glee. She flirts, she taunts, she teases, she plays pranks, she rides her stolen velocipede through the Flit like a bat out of Hell. She's never run anyone over -- barring a few instances of outside interference -- but there's any number of adults that swear she scared them half to death. She does not think matters through and is easily distracted. She'll do all sorts of things on a lark, and rarely takes matters seriously. Her antics are good-natured and generally harmless. She's not malicious, and while some people are infuriated by her, many find her eccentricities endearing. She's highly excitable, a vivid social butterfly who wants nothing more than to have a good time. Misfortune and trauma roll off her; it takes quite a lot to bring her down, and she rarely stays there for long. It makes her appear flighty and fickle, and while she can be shallow and oblivious to finer details, Nikki is actually a devoted friend and would never break a confidence. She's excellent at keeping secrets, and there's indications that if she bothered to devote herself she'd have a decent amount of skill as a trader or businesswoman.

Skills/Abilities:

+Feline Features
Nikki's balance is unparalleled, her agility superb, her footsteps feather-light. She's an excellent leaper, and she always lands on her feet. Her vision in dim light is every bit as good as in bright light -- perhaps better. She seems to have the sort of luck that comes with a cat's nine lives, and she's impossible to keep down for long.

+Sneaky Cat-Burglar
While she is a bit of a loose cannon, Nikki is able to pass undetected when she wants to. As an upstairs-man, she's a great climber, and she's able to slip through any hole wide enough to accomodate her bust. She's an excellent pickpocket and she specializes in picking locks. There's actually a couple rats that use her to test new designs. If she can't get it open in five minutes, it's good.

+Velocipedal
Master of the Flit-bound Velocipede, which has not touched the street since the day of its theft. She can take that thing places it has no right to be.

+Prankster
There's nothing quite like a good practical joke. It's surprising how much they have in common with traps. Ink mustaches and monocles, in particular, tend to appear on those found sleeping in her vicinity.

+Distraction
She loves attention, and she's good at getting it. She's also pretty good at escaping the pursuit that invariably follows.

+Mostly Harmless
Playful and affable, most people that she doesn't infuriate can't stay upset with her for long. And she's great at bluffing. It helps that she always has three different wild stories of varying plausibility for any situation.

-Did Not Think It Through
Exactly what it says on the tin, and her greatest source of difficulties. This also extends to a general lack of filter on what she says.

-I'm a Thief, Not a Killer
Nikki dislikes hurting people without reason. She's not particularly good at hurting them even with reason, being better suited to running away than standing and fighting. The availability of explosives can change this dramatically. There is always room for more explosions.

-Ooh, Shiny!
Nikki's focus is not the greatest. She's generally reliable, but anything shiny or intriguing will attract her attention, and the results can be unpredictable.

-Forbidden Fruit
When handling Nikki, the best way to keep her from doing something is to make in uninteresting, instead of telling her no.

Backstory:
Nikki's father runs a small store in the Neath. She was born in Fallen London, and it will always be home no matter how far she travels. She's not as close to her mother, who separated from her father years ago to focus on her professional life in law, but the two do see each other regularly -- and if Nikki gets in serious trouble she knows she can count on a good, if plausibly deniable, word from her mom.

As a child, Nikki ran with the Urchins. She is at least partially responsible for the Regiment's ownership of a cannon, one of her earliest real heists. She never did pick one gang to settle with, and has run in turns with all of them. She may have been involved in the start of the Nought-Cross war, and it's entirely possible that she fought on both sides as a kid, at one point or another. It's also possible that she managed to annoy BOTH sides simultaneously, and lead the entire hoard on a furious chase halfway across London, only to give them the slip in St. Fiacre's. As a Longshanks she enjoys privileged status with them, and still partakes in a number of games. The Urchins are as loyal to her as they are to each other...which is to say that they'll accept other folks' offers, but it does need to be a /good offer/. And they're sorry about that, but hey, that's how it goes, yanno?

She became a thief for the challenge of it and the thrill, rather than any need. She's shown significant skill in various Shadowy areas, and there are a couple novellas based on her better heists. She doesn't quite fit among the Criminals, being by turns admired and a joke. She's on good terms with the Cheery Man, and a tolerated pest amongst the Constables. They know her as annoying but overall harmless -- not that they don't want to catch her, but she's slippery. Also she tends to enjoy getting caught, and has been known to fake stealing something just for the thrill of getting chased. So it's a toss up if they put serious effort into trying. But she's also /great/ training for catching other ne'er-do-wells, and is always willing to help them test out their velocipedes.

She's been seen in Veilgarden, but her preferred vices are not found there exclusively. She enjoys the lively atmosphere, the vivacious temperament of the creative -- not to mention listening to the drama. Mahogany Hall is great, though she's as likely to cause trouble as help out. She has tried to unmask Feducci repeatedly, never with much success. She's also tried to sleep with him, with similar results. He seems to enjoy her uninhibited daring, but shows her no particular favoritism, beyond a certain fondness. The Topsy King treats her like a court jester, and she mimics his mode of speech when in his presence. If either one of them has trouble understanding the other, it's never evident to those watching.

Nikki has cultivated relationships with a number of the more unusual populations in Fallen London. She's endlessly curious about Rubberies, though she doesn't really understand them. She gets on famously with the rattus faber, and adores both them and their work. She has as many ratty friends as she does human ones, in all likelihood. Oddly enough she also has an affinity for the local felines. She understands how they think. Her habits of prying and eavesdropping result in a lovely assortment of choice tidbits with no direct obligations to the original party, and she doesn't mind sharing these, if properly approached. She is graceful (for a human), clever, and daring, and so the cats tolerate her company. Never say they are fond! They are not fond, they merely deign to indulge her. The bats know she is kind to their messengers, and often has a treat to give in exchange. This makes sending letters a simple matter, when she doesn't feel like paying (or trusting) an urchin.

And of course most of London know the tale of the the Flit-bound Velocipede, even if they don't know her.

Other:
Nothing at the moment.

Anactoria St James
Anactoria St James

12/22/2017
Player Name: Sophie

Character: Anactoria St James

Gender/Pronouns: Feminine (for both)

Skills/Abilities:

Indomitable Will: Although Anactoria can be insecure or shy, she possess an iron core of determination that she uses to plow through adversity, fear, and pain. When she truly desires a thing, circumstances may stop her, but she will not stop herself. Someday she will read Henley’s ‘Invictus’ and will memorize it immediately. A sub-skill in this category is Exceptionally Intimidating Steely-Eyed Stare.

Gentle Kindness: Anactoria has a very soft spot in her heart for animals and children (especially Urchins, now that she is in London); sensing this, they are dawn to her, they are easy and happy in her company. This makes her happy; as does the fact that most animals in the Neath speak! Having grown up on an English farm, she knows a good deal about animal care, training, and handling.

Athleticism: Anactoria is blessed with natural agility, strength, and endurance; she enjoys and cultivates these natural aptitudes through running, climbing, swimming, and riding. Soon she’ll discover Shroom Hopping and will rival the Turkish Girl’s ability. While not a hardened combatant, she’s learned enough about fencing and fisticuffs to be formidable in a scrap.

Appearance:

Age: ~18

Height: 5’6”

Build: Mesomorph

Skin color: Pale but with a hint of olive.

Eye color: Ebony

Hair: Dark chocolate; thick, full, slightly wavy; often somewhat disheveled; most often worn in a casual ponytail.

Face: Anactoria is possessed of an extraordinarily cute visage (especially her button nose).

Voice: Bright and clear with a accent from northern England. She enjoys singing.

Usual clothing style: Simple and functional, her clothing is a bit worn but it is well cared for. Commonly, Anactoria wears something akin to a riding habit of dark grey. Currently, the number of items in her wardrobe is limited.

Other:. She moves with an easy kinesthetic grace.

Personality: In public, Anactoria is often serious, terse, and hard-edged (but see Gentle Kindness above). New to London and intimidated by the place and its denizens, she weaves this protective façade to cover her insecurity and inexperience. Privately, although shy, she laughs and giggles easily and talks rather faster than her mind can frame her thoughts. Below it all, however, an iron core of determination and fierceness lies within.

She is naïve to the ways of London specifically and, to a lesser extent, the world in general.

While not necessarily strictly law abiding, goodness is important to Anactoria. Robin Hood is her favorite hero. In AD&D-speak she is Neutral/Chaotic Good.

Backstory: (an epistle to give some flavor while I continue developing her past)

Dear Sister,

So, you actually made it to London! I’m impressed. I am also delighted to know you are out of New Newgate. I was working discreetly with my lawyer to have you released—I could not be too directly involved, you understand—but you managed to get out yourself. Bravo! You’ve always been such a resourceful girl.

Now then, how are you finding London? It’s a bit different from Cumberland isn’t it? Are you hot on the trail of whomever it was that killed our dear cousin … well, your dear cousin … you know what she was to me.

In all events, I’ll send a landau around to pick you up this evening. You and I can have dinner, just like old times, and you can catch me up on everything.

With all my affection,

Donatien

I'm loving all the intros so far!

The peek at Anactoria is fascinating, and I am so curious what the urchin was going to say about her brother. I can't wait to get to know her better.

Viric gathering information on Jen and being the one to approach her -- now that's something I never expected to see! And I mean that in a good way -- it adds a fun twist to the intro.

Lady Karnstein gives me absolute chills -- never mind the mesmerising whatever she does, that throwing a guy into the wall was terrifying, although he totally deserved it -- and that's awesome.

Lee is reckless and adorable and I loved the way the whole thing with the Snuffer played out. On a side note, can I say I adore the diversity in this group? Jen's somewhere between bi and heteroflexible, and I am so here for more LGBTQ+ rep!

Nikki's shenanigans are cute! And I love her casual attitude to meeting the Boatman. To have her attempt go so completely off the rails is utterly unexpected, but the twist and the failure works.

Hubris is awesome, and he totally reminds me of the Black Butler manga. Unflappable, polite, magnanimous enough to cook for a widow who can't pay him but also apparently a hired killer? No wonder Jen would hire him again.

Canvas is so different from the film noir detective I initially imagined when I read his bio. That stunt with the irrigo was sheer awesomeness, and I can't wait to see what other tricks he has up his sleeve!

If it's okay with you guys, once all the intros are up, I'll post a scene at Jen's house where she presents her plan? I am so hyped for the rest of the RP!

Incidentally -- any Harry Potter fans here? I'm surprised nobody seems to have noticed my references!

Update:

The first half of the first heist - the third coil of the Labyrinth of Tigers - is complete except for editing. We'll be putting it up, split into several pieces, over the weekend. Then we'll start writing the second half, the theft at the Emporium.

We'll also be starting preliminary work on a couple of later heists, and writing some smaller RP scenes as well.

Readers, remember that the character descriptions are still in this thread, in case you need help remembering the dramatis personae.

Oh yeah, that was definitely noted. The term detective was being used in the more general sense rather than that of a police rank.

On a similar note, some of the dialogue seems to imply the drug added to the wine was lethal and it definitely was not that.

Doylist reason: someone may have made a remark about the dress in Jen's celebrity lookalike being dreamy, and what a shame it wasn't practical for heists, so I figured this was the best time for Jen to wear it.

Watsonian reason: it's stated to be the latest in infernal fashion, and we know the devils have an anachronistic sense of style and clothes that belong in the future. Also, Jen is deliberately going for revealing and scandalous attire. She's a femme fatale in many ways, and she knows a number of her guests are attracted to ladies. This is an excellent way to manipulate them.

Hello! I just wanted to stop by to express my enjoyment of you all's RP so far! I agree that there's lots of talent in the writing so far, I haven't missed a post. I look forward to how you all develop the story! You have a fan~

Also, if I might interject a small point in Lady Jen Black's favor, since I noticed the current discussion, temporary death in the Neath is not always without consequence. For example, in "The Persona Engine"
A head injury to a minor character mentioned in someone's backstory resulted in their death. Though they came back, the brain damage remained. They'll be like that forever. That could be considered a fate worse than death. That could easily breed strong and long-term hatred.
But it's just a small bit of Canon I thought might be useful to bring up. I hope it's not too big of a reveal.

Haha, he actually likes Tanner just fine! Had they met anywhere else, they would've got along right away, but...Well, he's based on the Urchin SS Background (With the Find Your Father's Bones ambition). Just to keep it spoilers free, there's a reason people like Tanner and Caroline make him act a bit aloof. Nothing personal!

And his accent is as Scottish as I can make it ;; English isn't my first language, but I'm trying to make it sound IC without being -too- annoying.

I won't kick you out! I'll just tell you to stop being juvenile!

Also, there have been and there will be at least one pop culture reference per post of mine in the RP thread. The toast from Story of Tonight just seemed so appropriate for this scene. And as to the guess that the first scene is Harry Potter -- that's true, actually! Don't worry, none of you are thick, the references have been pretty subtle. Keep your eyes open for more to come!

Jen's proposition is up! Sorry for the delay. It feels a bit clunky. What do you think?

Once more, a reminder just in case, this is the plan:

I take full responsibility for the outburst of romantic sonnets. Canvas, if you want to stab someone with a spork, I'm here! Just don't harm my fellow cultists--er, friends!

(Loving what you guys wrote, btw! Mike might have a different opinion, but characters, as you've said, don't get to voice their thoughts.)

Alright, let's see what Jen is up to...

That's really cool! I don't know how I didn't guess he was Scottish. I've always loved their accents. For a non-native English speaker, you pull it off really well! I would never have guessed it wasn't your first language. I didn't even know that was an Ambition (I chose Heart's Desire for Tanner), but nice little tidbit. No offense taken, don't worry. ^_^

Yeah, it seemed like everyone got the idea to write responses all at once. No worries, though. These things happen. And it's alright, Michael. I'm sure we'll get to know what he's really all about soon enough. He's clearly not a big fan of speeches, but in Tanner's defense, he's been a captain in charge of leading and inspiring criminals for many years. Being stone silent and stoic doesn't rouse the rabble as well. What's that accent Michael has? It doesn't sound Cockney like most of the Urchins.

Shy and Erem, what wonderful poems! I adore rhyming hid and mustelid!!

Also ... the recordings ... those were fantastic and your voice was jam-packed full of fun playfulness!

Erem used excellent words. I just tweaked the meter a wee bit, is all. I will freely admit that the use of mustelid wouldn't even occur to me. And it certainly wouldn't cross Nikki's mind -- I'm not sure she knows the word. I've played with sonnets before, and always had fun with syllable/meter games -- though haiku tends to turn up more often than sonnets. It's a fun diversion for which I happen to have something of a knack. And it was great fun using whatever trashy lines came to mind instead of worrying about word choice for once. Nikki is so /liberating/!

I've been told I have a great voice for her. I think I agree. I can't do calm and collected well, nor haughty. Sarcasm comes easily, but my forte is hyper and playful. ^.^;; Still, I'm blushing from all this praise! *flails*

It's not a hill to die on for Caroline. She will avoid killing anyone unless they **** her off. If others don't, she will be pleased, if they do she will make certain notes in her head and go on. Unless they kill Bohemians or Cats she is unlikely to be set off. I know it can have long term effects, dying helps make you truly part of the Neath. Whether that is a bad thing can be a subject of debate.

OOC, no problem! If Lee is being a little bit stubborn and difficult, that's just IC. Her relevant training is for military commando raids. She considers Jen Black's scruples impractical and likely to get members of the group killed. But my idea was for pretty much exactly what has already happened: Lee complains about it, her objections are overridden, she accepts it and moves on. I don't personally have a problem, and I don't want the debate to drag on either. I just wanted to RP a difference in Lee's perspective, but I don't want to slow the action down! She might be grumpy but she'll get over it.

OOC, I don't mind either way! Michael is just stubborn too, and he really thinks Surface-born people are too finicky about death and harm. As Addis commented, he knows organs don't grow back, but that's just the way it is. He challenged Lee to speak up because he's a bit of a firebrand when it comes to speaking up, and my plan was to have him back her up directly, but posts happened x.x

Happy birthday! I'm in Florida. Southern coastal Florida: it's one part Caribbean, one part Redneck, one part nursing home.

I'm fine with GDocs; I use them a lot. I think that we could address most of Sly's concerns by leaving space for later contributions, so that certain players who write too much don't dominate things (tries to look innocent), and by having smaller scenes written by smaller groups in separate documents.

I personally like a good Conan-style bloodbath, but OOC I'm not insisting at all, and IC Lee isn't really either ... I'm already thinking about how she might try to explain herself better to certain characters in private.

If people are okay with it, I'd like to take the Flit scene and twist it so we can do some murder investigation, among some other things. It'll optional, as far as the heists are concerned, and might raise the stakes for those who crave something a little more intense. Of course, this depends on whether people would be up for it. There would be many trigger warnings, but we can discuss that.

Consider it the metaphorical SMEN of IRU.

    MICHAEL BARROWS

    Roles
    :
    - Quiet Infiltrator: Michael and the weasels can sneak in and out of most places without being noticed. They can also steal small objects, like keys or folded maps, if they're given enough intel on where they might be.

    - Sniper: Give him a target, a window or a reasonably large distance, and consider your back covered.

    Liabilities:
    - Neath-Born: London, along with her complexities, don't faze him nearly as much as they should. Most likely to shoot himself and keep his body in a ditch to escape danger.

    - Clear-minded: What you see is what you get. And what you get is someone who will take your words and actions at face value.

    Perceptions:
    - "A year that will never come": If you need special ammunition, Hell's got you covered*. Each bullet has a different letter of its alphabet to symbolize its purpose: Smoke-bombs, sleeping powder, poison, you name it, it's probably there. Of course, they aren't infinite...And they happen to be quite expensive...(I'll probably limit it to one or two special effects per heists, and only use them once or twice. Don't bleed my boy dry.)

    - “As ye ken”: He's heard it all. The stories, the rumours, the vile gossip. Not all of it is true, of course, but cross-refering information is the best way to find the closest thing to the truth. (Being an OOC lorehound, I'll provide all the info I can! IC, we can discuss what's more likely to be true or not.)

    Agenda:
    - And nothing but the truth: Michael intends to publish all the notorious information we find, omitting only the heist participants' names. Of course, not everyone might agree with this...

    Spotlight:
Not particularly! Unless you count him internally groaning because there's no bloody wind down here.

    Any other requests?
Make me rant about what's going on through the entire thing, and I'll be a happy Sly.

    Nikki

Roles: What role do you expect to play in this heist? What abilities do you expect to use for the group’s benefits, and how? Lockpicking, as needed. Bait, as needed. Distraction, as needed. And she's great at bluffing -- and known to have wild stories.

Liabilities: Are there ways in which your character’s liabilities might make things harder for the characters? (In a way that can still be fun for the players, of course!) Animals are cute. And distracting. She may try to pet them. Or take one home. Or just let them all out of their cages. But nothing too different from the usual.

Perceptions: Does your character have unusual senses, knowledge or contacts which might give them an unusual and valuable perspective on this heist? Nikki is popular with the tigers, which might be useful. She's not afraid of large/dangerous creatures -- though this can cause brashness as much as bravery. She sees well in the dark, which might or might not be useful.

Agenda: Does your character have any special agenda on this heist? (could be any number of things regarding Factions, NPCs, fellow PCs, or loot) Nikki wants to steal the Tiger Keeper's hat. She will probably also be the one to suggest putting honey in the hearts because of course she is.

Spotlight: Is there any particular aspect of your character’s personality or background that you would like to highlight on this heist? Uh...letting loose creatures to cause mayhem seems very Nikki, but other than that, I can't think of anything? Her devil-may-care attitude shows up /everywhere/.

Any other requests? (Things you’d like to see/do, things about the tone of the adventure, suggestions, miscellaneous) If possible, Nikki riding on SOMETHING should happen. Preferably some large quadruped used to plow through a bunch of barriers/cell doors. But it's negotiable.

    Mr. Hubris Glamore

    Roles:
-Consummate Professional: Absolutely loyal to his employer and their agenda. Will do his utmost to fulfill Jen's aims and protect the team.
-The Help: Fades nicely into the background of a scene like any other beneath notice servant when he wants to.
-Master at Harms: When violence is required he is extremely dangerous at close range with bare hands or a makeshift weapon.

    Liabilities:
-Confidentiality Guaranteed: Will not divulge anything a client, past or present has told to him in confidence. Which is a great aspect for trusting him with your secrets, but not so great if he's been previously hired by a rival and has information you could use.
-Keeping up the Masquerade: Prefers to operate through subtlety and opportunism where possible and will be loathe to blow his cover unless the situation absolutely demands it.

    Perceptions:
-Known Chaperone: Has served the tigers before, largely in the capacity of attending to the arrangements of visiting society figures. His presence here at face value will not be suspect.

    Agenda:
-Smoothing Things Over: After the wine incident, he's keen to demonstrate effective teamwork in order to dispell any remaining mistrust within the group.
-Pay Attention: He is not at all fond of the fingerkings. He's loyal to the job and will serve Jen's agenda to free the 3rd coil prisoners. He will however, take pains to remember their faces for later.

    Spotlight:
-Nothing particular here. He's got no real attachment to the events within the Labyrinth outside of getting a good look at the fingerking possessed humans.

    Lady Caroline Karnstein

Roles: Grave-Borne Vigor: This seems a good time for Caroline’s prodigious strength to come to play. This is a zoo, with heavy cages and doors, and Caroline might well be able to tear out bars or pull sealed doors off their hinges. Not something I am invested in having happen, but she could slip ahead and do that, or perhaps not even use it in an emergency but, say, tear a door off it’s hinges to affect escape.

Dangerous Allure: Caroline’s sparkling eyes, pale skin, and low purr are almost hypnotic. While she cannot actually control minds, she is very good at making people suggestible and inclined to carry out her wishes. Often people unconsciously do what she asks without realizing it, and can easily slip into a very shallow trance just looking at and listening to her.

·Liabilities: Habituated Hunter Caroline is used to hunting things with heartbeats. Its easier for something without to get a jump on her.

Not Hungry Yet Caroline is currently well fed, has not been injured, did not have sex food or drink, and rested. She may be distracted by lots of blood but won’t lose control. This could change.

·Perceptions: Predator Caroline’s senses could help here too. She can detect a variety of scents and hear heartbeats. It will help gauge what they are dealing with, sizes, and if they are afraid. She can see well in the dark.

One of Us: Cats, including big ones, tend to be positively disposed to Caroline. If nothing else inclined to not harm her and at least talk. Her allure is lost on them, though.

·Agenda: Trust in THIS Maybe murder a freed Fingerking if she could get away with it. She enjoys doing it, but won’t take any particular risk to do so.

Protect the Protector: Caroline will do nearly anything to ensure both she and Lee survive.

Spotlight: No. Caroline is here in duty to others. She does not care, one way or the other, about it. In terms of the narrative, this is a better story for her to take a back seat on. She can have key moments, but there are better places to shine.

If anything here contradicts something I said in my first post about Cosmo on this thread, this overrides it. Doing this RP has taught me things about Cosmo I wasn’t necessarily expecting.

    Roles
Upstanding member of society: even if Cosmo isn’t really a bumbling academic, they certainly do a good impression of one. Thus, their appearance makes it difficult for any observer to suspect them of anything larcenous, making up for their lack of shadowiness.

Cool in a crisis: the army, surgery, and working with some outrageously arrogant academics taught Cosmo to keep a level head in high pressure situations. While some of the things they do may seem stupid or foolhardy, you can be sure that the risk has been meticulously calculated and nobody will come off too worse for wear.

Medical precision: picking locks is nothing compared to keyhole surgery. Even under the influence, Cosmo will be steady, fastidious, and retain an excellent memory.

    Liabilities
Priorities: Cosmo knows the price of brass, but is more interested in the value of secrets. This could turn their eyes from the prize if an opportunity arises to ditch jewels in favour of some old letters.

Independent spirit: not necessarily a team player, and unimpressed by any tricks that might get them to play ball. They’ll still remain loyal if they benefit from doing so, but in one off situations, they could cause tension or damage the cover for the team.

    Perceptions
Neathy lore: what Cosmo lacks in experience, they make up for in reading, so their knowledge of the geography and politics of the Neath at least matches that of a Neath-born Londoner.

Antiquities: not necessarily materialistic (see ‘Priorities’) but they know junk when they see it, and, perhaps more importantly, can easily spot an unexpected gem.

    Agenda
‘Academic’ interest: if what’s garnered from the heist can’t be used for blackmail, at least it will make for some damn good reading material.

    Spotlight/ Requests
Nah, not really, but I do have a line in case there’s ever a cause for Cosmo to throw something blunt and heavy...

A fair question! Telemachia Lee rather likes it when things get dangerous, but not everyone feels that way. It might be a good idea to have a scene where the characters talk about their doubts. But when would be the best time for it? Immediately? Between this heist and the next? Or when we hole up for the evening? (Asking everyone, but especially the players.)

Hi! Me again, I just wanted to say I'm happy with how things are going now, proper setup between characters can make the heist itself have much more potential with that kind of context for the readers to go on. I was a bit confused with the poisoned wine derailment as a plot point, but overall I'm enjoying it greatly still!

Yeah, the poisoned wine thing elicited unexpectedly strong in-character reactions. We decided to run with it as a plot point, showing Jen making a mistake and dealing with the consequences, and deepening character interactions. We're writing the actual heist part now. We're geared up and ready to steal all the things.

Telemachia Lee: Gentle lady by birth, brawling Docker by choice. Good company in the drunk tank.

More good stuff! Nikki is a blast as always, with lots of great Urchins details. Hubris is delightful! And Lee appreciates a good butler. And Canvas seems to have hard luck too. I'm not so sure that he doesn't fit the noir detective trope. We'll see!

Lady Jen- She can't really, like, mind control; more facination and charm. I figure that is superhuman Persuade. It is really really fun to write though. Thanks for the praise for the writing. Next scene sounds good. Will keep an eye out.

AE: There is a little flavortext implying it is dreamlike. I run with it because it is something I enjoy envisioning and describing. And suits Caroline well. And it suits FL tone for it to try to stop her from leaving sometimes.

Thanks for the feedback on my writing. fun and valuble for improving my craft.

((I waffle between preferring past and present, but I've no serious issues with either. Currently I tend to write past, since that's what most of my rps are in. I apologize in advance for mistakes while trying to shift modes.

I'm pretty good with the plan, only Nikki wants to hit Plenty AND Mahogany...she'll probably end up with Mahogany. She has a feeling stealing mirrors won't end well.

Nikki would like to team with a few different people...but she's flexible. Mike's the only one she has strong ties to so far, and she hopes he's not still mortified over that one incident...then again, it looks like he and his girlfriend are doing well, so he's probably fine.

Personally I want to write with ALL OF YOU but we'll see how it goes. In terms of targets, Nikki prefers the Embassy to the Duchess -- not that the Duchess doesn't have nice things to steal, but she really does like the cats. And the Duchess. Well, the Duchess is okay? She'll go for Mahogany Hall, not the Carnival -- but she's robbing BOTH sides of the War of Illusion, and probably framing the other side for both of them. She thinks that will be amusing. She may have a spare Phantom outfit for the occasion. Just in case, y'know?

    I figured that Pages is associated with the Ministry, but y'know, whatever works. I have a few ideas for there that I'm letting stew. And a few for the Flit -- I do a lot with my FL chars and the Flit, at least in my head. I've played with ideas for the university, but Alys has her office at Benthic, because Summerset is a bunch of stuffed shirts. Or it will be, when she gets that far. Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey~ ^.^;;

By the way, I know Alys isn't around to disapprove, but not all of those humans in the Labyrinth are still human.

And what is the stance on Companions and various pets?))

Ah, no hard feelings, Nikki! In fact, Mike really likes your idea of robbing both sides and framing the other. Any worthwhile secrets will be published in the next edition of his newspaper, if he can get away with it. I get the feeling some characters won't necessarily want the truh behind their faction(s) coming out. And that's awesome! I love to rp rivalries Big Grin

That being said, he doesn't mind joining any team with spare places. He only cares about learning the truth behind each target's circumstances, whether directly or by piecing things together.

Aaah! Compliments from Phryne? I'm bright red.

I liked that butler too, actually. *waves to the folk from #Argo*

I read HP, and I had a good chuckle over Sirius, the Potters, and various details. I also noticed a hint of Sherlock in there, too, which I thought particularly clever.

Lia, I actually intended to have her succeed...but it felt a little lame, so then I went "Now what would make this more Nikki?" and she promptly suggested that shattering a gorgeous window would fit the bill perfectly. And so it did! ^.^

It seems like the party is getting rather cramped! If there's room I'd love to join, but if not I'm just as willing to play an antagonist for the group to overcome. I feel like my character could work well in either role. ^_^

    Player: Gul
Character: Gul al-Ahlaam, the Uncanny Hierophant
    Called: They/Them for both

Appearance: Gul is long and narrow, with olive skin and tangled black hair. Their deep-set eyes used to be hazel, but after a long dance through dreams, they’ve softened to a pale cosmogone. Under their high collars and narrow frocks, their body is a tapestry of scars. Their left arm was lost from the elbow down after a failed experiment, and replaced with the still-living claw of an enormous crab (or a wooden prosthetic, in polite company). Their face, normally hidden under a mask or veil, was torn apart by a riposte from Feducci’s saber; the wound was deep, and healed slowly and incompletely. During their pilgrimage to the Mountain of Light, they plunged their face into her lesser wound and drank of her blood, restoring their youth and strength, but also reconstructing their face around the scar, creating a cleft in their lip all the way up to their forehead, studded with dozens of tiny interlocking teeth.

Personality: In their public life, Gul is elegant, dreamy, and fey. Their insatiable curiosity leads them to take interest in just about anything, and their conversations tend to drift between confusing poetic metaphor, needling questions, and praise of their conversational partner. They have a habit of inventing sweet if embarrassing pet names for their friends, and disparaging ones for their enemies. In private they are more earnest than elegant, and are quick to lavish care and affection on their family and close friends, or on anything else that seems to desire it. But their compassion is a perilous gift. What Gul thinks of as a grand and beautiful expression of love might not be recognizable as such to anyone outside of their imagination.

Backstory: Dr. F____ D__________ was a natural philosopher on the surface, with a special interest in the Exile’s Rose, the study of which eventually brought them to the Neath. After a brief scuffle involving a stylish but illegal monkey, and an awkward visit with an estranged uncle, they managed to make themself at home. For a while they plied the trade of an investigator, but their lack of interest in actually resolving any of the cases was a quick route to professional infamy, and they soon directed their attentions toward the University. Their academic career has been… well, let’s say exciting! They fit in very well at Benthic, to be sure, and between their enthusiasm and adventurous lifestyle they’ve become quite popular among students, even if their reputation in the academic community is less than stellar.

    Qualities:
Pythian— The Hierophant’s mind is a labyrinth of honey dreams and moonlit visions, blood pacts and prophecies, soaked through with the colors of night. They frequently lose track of chronology and confuse their own memories with dreams or glimpses of the future or memories belonging to someone else entirely. It takes a complex system of colored inks, reminders, and incense to keep track of what’s going on around them, but if this is the burden of prophecy, it is one they are more than willing to bear. While the uncertain and often incomprehensible nature of their visions makes them too unreliable to plan around, they still provide the Hierophant valuable insight and secrets.

Bromeliad— As in the mind, so too in the flesh. Through years of accidental miscalculations, purposeful self-experimentation, and secret ritual mutilation, the Hierophant has become an ecosystem in microcosm, their patchwork body run through with all manner of guest and infiltrator. Each of their disparate elements comes with some benefit to the gestalt (their crab claw is unexpectedly sharp, the mushrooms rooting in their hair give them confusing but valuable advice) but also bring some detriment (they have little in the way of manual dexterity, their face must be kept covered in polite company, etc).

Echidna— The Uncanny Hierophant is a divisive figure in Revolutionary circles. Their studies of those arts which subvert the Law are valuable, and for those students who take on their lessons, a boon to the cause. But their alliances are inconvenient, and their notably aristocratic politics somewhat problematic. Even among those groups with whom their relationship is strong and enduring, like the Cousins or the Rubbery Men, they cannot be fully trusted, simply because their aims and priorities are idiosyncratic. While they have friends in many places, their capricious nature means they’re always at risk of betrayal.

As far as targets go, for the most part Gul could go either way, with perfectly logical reasons to work with or against the team on each one. The only exception is the Gracious Widow, who they regard with a combination of awe and terror. They've never even considered looking her in the eye, let alone robbing her.

I think the GM should have only as many people as she can handle. That is on you. If you can handle that many, I have no issue if they can get along with us. If you feel unsure I would say to sleep on it and decide. I have GM'd TT and may could swing one of those four. I would want to see how this runs first before committing to it. The 27th should be okay; I am pretty solid player during the week, and I try to post weekends with mixed results. As long as we are starting during the week I am happy.

No objection to Gul, nor to any proposed target, but I think that Lia should probably stick to what she feels comfortable with. These things usually wind up being more work than anticipated. You might want to stick to your core list of targets and players to start with, but leave room for later expansion (or, to be frank, to replace players who drop out - we all have RL complications after all, and sometimes those unexpectedly multiply.)

It's also sensible to shift extra work to other players, and you can do that while remaining in charge overall. I expect that Lady Karnstein would be a good auxiliary GM. I am also willing, but I agree that an auxiliary GM would need to get a feel for the story before jumping in.

This sounds like an overly ambitious plan which will get us in way over our heads. I like it!

If I keep the Black Wings Drunk aspect, that gives Lee an extra motive to rob February: to replenish her supply of Masters' Blood.

Let's get to it then! I'm Demijan (Variation of Damien, pronounced similarly) and my character is a private investigator by the name of Canvas Blank.

    Player Name: Demijan
    Character: Canvas Blank
Gender/Pronouns: Masculine (both player and character.)

    Skills/Abilities:
Seeing Without Being Seen: Everything from a rubbery affair in Veilgarden to shady dealings in Wilmot's End. He knows the rooftops and ropes of London like the palm of his hand; Somewhat of a necessity for a private eye and an Agent of the Great Game, but his natural curiosity allows him the passion for his work. However, since he is not capable of being at multiple places at the same time, he is known to occasionally use the Urchin gangs as his eyes and ears around the city. An expert in gathering information.
Friends in High Places: Valuing the words of the Masters over anyone's and being used as their lackey, he has acquired quite a collection of useful contacts. Anyone could be a letter away from mysteriously disappearing. He considers the Masters to be close friends, rather than just employers. They probably don't feel the same way. In any case, he dislikes being called their "pet".
An Extraordinary Mind: Being a newly-made Extraordinary Mind, he can think his way out of a tight situation. A quick thinker-- deductive, observant, logical; Probably knows more than he lets on. He is fascinated by Mirrors, the Fingerkings and all things Parabolan, but is far from an expert in the field.
Wilmot's Regular: He is a spy. He does have a lovely, luxurious reservation at the Royal Bethlehem, yes, but he attends to the more secretive business in his shack-like residence in Wilmot's End. There, he can feel at home. Of course, having a home in Wimot's End does come with a set of terribly useful neighbors.
Murder Most Subtle: He may not be trained in direct confrontation, but that's only because he prefers the more subtle methods. Whether it's flavoring someone's coffee in Caligula's with a drop of questionable substance from the rooftops, a seemingly regular pencil containing more than just ink, or a swift break of a neck from behind, he does it flawlessly and without a trace.

    Appearance:
Slightly taller than average and broad-shouldered. His messy brown hair compliments his wide, emerald-green eyes, surrounded by circles which may indicate sleeplessness. However, his posture is surprisingly energetic and he rarely appears tired. He is prone to wearing long overcoats and fedoras (As you would imagine a private investigator or a detective wearing) and you will most likely never see him wear the classic Londoner's top hat or an expensive suit. Other than that, he doesn't appear to have any distinctive features or scars. Except, maybe... are those encrypted tattoos, crawling from his back to his shoulder?

    Personality:
When alone, he tends to be quiet, pensive, lost in his thoughts-- some would even say melancholic. In company, however, he is relaxed, cheerful and doesn't take himself too seriously. He has a light sense of morality; A trait many would consider a handicap in the Neath, especially for an agent of the Great Game. He is far from being an unfeeling killer and dislikes needless brutality and direct confrontation, but he himself has taken part in an awful lot of poisonings. The kind of person that will rather make a deal with an enemy which benefits both sides than shed blood, but is still ready to pull his sleeves up when needed.
    Backstory:
He doesn't like to talk about it - However, certain details can slip his tongue after a glass or eight. He claims that he came to the Neath after his divorce on the Surface, looking for "a fresh start", which is why he has been breaking off every contact with the world above ever since his descent (including his real name). It hasn't been easy, though; He misses the Surface greatly and he has developed a Sunlight addiction during his time in London. He didn't come here to seek revenge, authority, power, wealth or love-- He came down here out of sorrow. He certainly does a great job hiding it, though.

    Other:
Weaknesses: (It only seems right to list them if there's a Skills list.)
    Face-to-face confrontation, brawls, duels.
A crippling and self-destructive addiction to Mirrorcatch Boxes.
    Has a moral code.
Too relaxed for his own good, will not constantly be on high alert.
Sensitive to the subject of his past life. Best not mention it.
Heavily set on keeping his Surface-given life intact and not going through temporary Neath-death.

Hello everyone! I'm happy to join you all. I'm not very experienced with RPing on forums, but I'm sure all shall be well. Without further ado,

    Player Name:
    Tim
    Character: Viric/Viric Voice
Gender/Pronouns: He/Him for both player and character

    Skills/Abilities:
    • Illusionist : Viric is tied to the Glass—illusionists of the Mahogany Hall. As long as there are mirrors nearby, he can trick the minds of unaware people with life-like images.
    • Prediction : Venturing into Parabola even just a little allows you to see what Is-Not, and thus try and deduce what Is. This helps Viric to predict behaviours and happenings—not very accurately, but it can help.
    • Cloaked : Viric is not a man for confrontation. He is neither a very skilled fighter nor a brute, and thus prefers to hide when needs be. Under his large cloak, he can sulk for hours in the shadow.

Appearance: A tall (1.90m/6'3"), thin man, cloaked in a large and light cloak. He has two piercing viric-green eyes. He looks young—in his twenties. The finer shape of his body is masked by the cloak. His voice is deep and attractive, and he is prone to bouts of singing. His face seems hardened by life.

Personality: Smooth, he likes to play with words and with people. He seems to sleep very little, plagued with nightmares; sometimes, he wakes and looks North for a minute or two. He lights candles on his windowsill.
He knows London in and out, and thus is not surprised by its oddities. He is very protective of younger people, especially urchins.

Backstory: Mentored by Dr. v. Marsong, his patron turned mad and gone North, Viric was groomed for London. However, when his teacher suddenly disappeared, he found himself alone and wanting in the streets, with the doctor haunting his dreams. To avoid the horror of hunger, he aligned himself with the Urchins, from whom he learned a lot about the secrets of the Neath. He was always passionate about Parabola and mirrors.
When, having joined the Glass, he tried his first illusion, he disappeared for a few days. When he came back, his green eyes shining with viric light, he felt ready to lead his own life and try to rid himself of his former patron.

There was a VERY large flowerden arc, which somewhat imploded, leaving just the argo/shade hunters.
The passionario journey is also worthy of a mention, even if it was only one person.

Can you guys please give your suggestions? I have honestly never done something on this scale and I'm kicking myself over here for not thinking of how the characters would meet for the first time. It's a huge oversight and I honestly don't know how I didn't think of it. So... help? Ideas? Suggestions? Please?
Something we've done a lot in the past for scenes that involve multiple characters talking is collab-posts (what Erem already mentioned somewhere above): draw up a Google doc, share the link, and basically let everyone involved write the scene together. For this introduction scene it would probably work if you wrote a general description of the meeting place, then have Jen ask everyone present to introduce themselves. The Shade-Hunt featured a lot of collab posts written this way (from about here), sometimes just by two players, sometimes by all of us together! Cool

A Tale of Two Suns has only just started, but is already certain to become an unforgettable epic of legendary status *ahem* *coughs* wink
I'm not aware of any other big RPs currently going on. Beside the past ones already mentioned, there was the Neathean Argo - I think that one was the first huge, sprawling collaborative RP effort on these forums that made it to the finish line.

Windows are allowed, but if either of you break the glass, Jen is going to reconsider inviting you, so please try not to shatter it on your way in. And don't think you're going to surprise her -- she has a flock of bats guarding her house and providing aerial reconnaissance, so expect her to be in the room when you open the window!

I do favor a Google doc like phryne suggests, I think it would be easier to keep chronology in order that way. For example, slower posters could slide in some of their initial thoughts/reactions near the start of the document, even if events have progressed along a bit. Also, as each scene wraps up it could be posted on the Forums as a single coherent narrative, possibly making it easier for our audience to follow. If we do go G-docs, I suggest that everyone select a different color to write it, that makes it a tad easier to track the characters.

Thanks for throwing up the opening post Lia!!

I've posted Anactoria's entrance ... it's a little temporally askew in that it shows her reactions to other people. Obviously this part takes place after everyone is assembled. I justify this because I think I might be one of the slower posters and I don't want to get left too far behind. Also, it starts to paint a more detailed picture of Anactoria than I've so far given. It has nothing at all to do with the fact that I've been bouncing on my chair all day waiting for the scene to open. >_>

I've left out Gul cause I don't know if they are in or not, and if anything is horribly wrong with how she sees a character I will happily fix it.

"And she's damn near unsheathed" -- that made me LOL. The comparison to a stiletto is quite accurate, I assure you.

The timey-wimey-wibbley-wobbly about the others being in the room makes sense here. Gul won't be joining us for now, although I might bring them on board in the future. Don't worry about being slow -- life happens. As long as a post can come up every two or three days (not counting weekends), that's good enough!

EDIT: Is it okay if we put it on hold for just a little while? I have a friend in the FL RP community who might be interested. I know I've closed the players list, but I've known him for quite a while and I feel he'd be a good fit.

Thanks, Lia! And thanks for the nice setup!

Lee only really knew Caroline before, and didn't know that she was in on the heist. She knows Mike and Nikki as friends of friends. And she met up with Canvas Blank and Tanner Price (separately) before the meeting.

Lee considers Caroline a good friend! It's just that you don't want your crush to see you hanging around with your much prettier friend, you know?

Ah, so that's the way things are? I see. Hopefully Lee will have more luck with Anactoria than previously. At least she's not a Snuffer or involved with a zailor, right?

I didn't say it earlier, but your line about giving Jen's legs the attention they deserve made me laugh. Hard. Does she live up to Lee's expectation when she asked Butler about being pretty? (And is his name an Artemis Fowl reference? Because that would be so cool).

Shy, you have made me laugh. Very hard. That whole last paragraph about the breakables... just LOL. If you're wondering, it's not *just* because of what happened with the window. Jen wants to avoid her art collection from being used as improvised weaponry in case a fight breaks out. And I really enjoy reading Nikki's POV! She has a very fun, energetic narrative voice, and it brings a smile to my face.

Anactoria, I totally get you. I get the sense Tanner might remind the character of someone she doesn't particularly like? Going to take a guess and say Donatien is her brother. I like the way you give us enough facts to tantalize us with possibilities but not enough to draw an actual conclusion, at least not yet!

Erem, weapons are allowed to be *brought* but Lee will have to leave any particularly noticeable pieces at the coat-rack. Mind you, even though Jen doesn't look like she's armed, she is. A dagger or two won't be an issue, but a cavalry saber might unsettle the other guests.

Can't wait to see what the others come up with!

Very nice! I think that we have a good sense of who Caroline is. Lee would be quite pleased to know that she makes her feel safer.

I think that you got everyone - without Viric we have, by my count, ten total.

I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's first impressions of each other. It seems like Canvas Blank in particular has been busy. And Nikki is well on her way to becoming team mascot.

I love all these posts. I am pleased to have earned a few laughs of my own -- particularly when playing Nikki, I revel in being just a bit silly. Well. Sillier than normal~ ^.^ I was pretty sure the lack of breakables was unrelated, but given that it was specifically mentioned, and given Nikki's initial appearance...well, how could I resist?

Nikki would very much approve of a cavalry saber. It just might be a bit conspicuous on the heist itself if not done properly. Lee's flip from casual charm to gentlewomanly was great. If Nikki ever catches her doing that she will be in for a ribbing. Nikki is very much in favor of Lee's final line: "she will, of course, make fun of them." And /I/ approve of the idea that something's gonna go wrong, but that Lee (and the others) can handle it. A+ attitude there!

I find myself wanting (as usual) to know what's going on behind the scenes. Speaking of, if anyone wants to reach me, message Alys and not Nikki. I can reply as I would for Nikki, if you like, but I don't get alerts for stuff that goes to Nikki, and I tend to misplace it much more easily than the stuff Alys gets.
Ana is adorbs. Just totally adorbs. The idea of Jen being a fortress (as Mike noted) is an intriguing one. Alys supports that entirely. Caroline is once again gorgeous and intimidating. And it's so cute that Lee makes her feel safe! Then again, having a friend to watch your back always does.

Canvas is a hoot. If Nikki saw, she'd laugh. And then attempt to make him stumble over his words every time she found a good chance. She loves doing that. And this will totally make up for his rumpled academic appearance in her mind. His assessment of Nikki is great -- everyone's assessment of her is great, actually. THough she's dying to tell all of you to stop calling her Wyatt, miss, Miss Wyatt, or anything other than Nikki. She doesn't hold with all that nonsense. She has a name -- well, alright, she has a giant mouthful of a name, but she also has a perfectly serviceable nickname and she would like people to use it. In fact, she's very likely to shorten the name (first or last) of everyone else in the room, given half the chance. Or tack Ys onto the ends. Or come up with related nicknames. Stuff like that.

I am amused by the idea of Amber Correspondince, and a bit concerned. Is this an actual thing in FL, an rp canon, or just a random incident. I am mildly worried about the request for people to drink. Nikki won't think twice, of course, but I've been playing a paranoid char somewhere else, and particularly with how it was presented...*fidget*

Although Nikki did no research whatsoever. The fact that she recognizes him is entirely circumstantial. I mean, how many mercenary butlers are there in London? He was an oddity. Something shiny and novel. She likes that sort of thing.

Docteur, it is a shame to see you go. Hope RL sorts itself out right quick!

I WOULD try to put this in the wrong tab when I have both open. *sigh* Shy, you need to chill. X.x

Thank you! Caroline was raised nobility, so she tends to, least in pubic, carry herself with some air of dignity, though people never get the idea she thinks herself better than them for it. I also apologize ahead of time for how often you will see the word 'languid" when I write her it is one of the most purely accurate ways to describe her demeanor much of the time, until she shifts like a lazy cat to an active one. Caroline really likes Lee, she holds her in esteem. Anactoria is new, and cute...will be interesting to see where it goes.

What is going on between Canvas and Michael? Place your bets now. Optionally, write scandalous sonnets about it.

Sly, I loved that peek into Michael's head! He's a lot wiser and a better judge of character than I gave him credit for. Only time will reveal if his assessment of Jen is right, but it is poetic, I can tell you that! Your writing voice is so unique and enjoyable.

Aww, thank you so much! I was so worried about this post, even though some wonderful people here insisted it was okay, so I'm really glad you liked it!
I look forward to his interactions with Jen. As long as he can keep his eyes on her, which he utterly failed to do with poor Caroline. She's too alluring for him.

The other appeared to have a strange... wriggling quality about him. Had there been… an attachment?

I loved this first guess! If Michael realized this is what it looked like, he'd make a point of not keeping weasels in this back-pockets. Or maybe not. Depends on the occasion.
